(RM Devarumath) Editor I t is last quarterly issue of 2019 comes to the readers as the New Year 2020 has already begun. The Sugar industry is the backbone of the rural economy of the Maharashtra state economy has been trembled due to natural calamities like drought in northern part and unprecedented rainfall for a longer period resulting in heavy floods in southern part of Maharashtra, which is called bowl of sugar. Due to water logging in cane fields for a long duration, some of the cane area has been destroyed completely while some areas have been partially which resulted in lower cane availability in forth coming crusing season. It is estimated that the sugar production of state season 2019-20 will be around 60.00 lakh tonnes against 107.20 lakh tonnes produced in sugar season 2018-19. During 2018-19 season out of 243 sugar mills, only 195 sugar mills started their crushing operations. These sugar mills crushed 95.21 million tonnes of sugarcane. The State’s average sugar recovery remained as 11.27% during both the crushing seasons. Gurudatt Sugars Pvt. Ltd. from Kolhapur district recorded the highest sugar recovery of 13.41% and 13.34% in the state consecutively two seasons. The technical performance of the distilleries affiliated to VSI member sugar mills in the state reported that the capacity utilization of the distilleries has increased substantially in the year 2018-19 (77.31 %) as compared to previous year 2017-18 (53.53 %). The capacity utilization of fuel ethanol plants has also substantially increased in the year 2018-19 (51.99 %) as compared to previous year 2017- 18 (23.66 %). In the year 2018-19, the alcohol production in the country was 3450 million liters. Fifty seven operating distilleries affiliated to VSI member sugar mills in Maharashtra have contributed 628.50 million liters to the country’s alcohol production, which amounts to around 18.21 % of the total alcohol production. The Government of India notified the scheme namely, “Scheme for extending financial assistance to sugar mills for enhancement and augmentation of ethanol production capacity” vide various notifications right from July 19, 2018. Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) has helped all sugar mills to submit the financial proposals for establishing new distillery units, expansion/modernization of existing distilleries and installation of modern effluent plants. VSI has conducted awareness workshops for the sugar mills In Maharashtra to understand the technology and economics of producing ethanol from B-heavy molasses, sugarcane juice and sugar. VSI is also helping the sugar mills in the state in optimizing the process of ethanol production from these feed stocks. VSI is also providing guidance to sugar mills in adopting the rules and regulations prescribed by Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. The 43 rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) and annual awards distribution ceremony for all those concerned with their excellences performance in increasing sugarcane production and sugar industry in the state was held on 25 th December 2019 . On this occasion Hon. Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Uddhav Thackeray and Hon. President of VSI Mr. Sharad Pawar highlighted the present scenario of sugarcane and precautions to be taken for sustainability at this function I have a great pleasure in welcoming you for 2 nd International Conference & Exhibition at Vasantdada Sugar Institute, Pune. The theme of the Conference is “Sustainability- Innovation & Diversification in Sugar and Allied Industry” to be held from 31 st January 2020 to 2 nd February 2020. National Seed Day

EVENTSEVENTS

Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) had organized Fifth‘National Seed Day’ on October 01, 2019 under ICARseed project. On this occasion a one day trainingprogram was conducted on ‘Sugarcane seedmultiplication & production technology’ forAgriculture Assistants of sugar mills & seed nurseryfarmers. Inaugural of the National seed day wasgraced by Principal Scientist & Head, Plant Breedingsection and sectional Heads and Scientists in theAgriculture Science and Technology Division. For thisprogram total 80 trainees of 27 sugar mills wereparticipated.

Mr. SS Katake, Scientist & Farm Manager welcomedthe august gathering and briefed regardingimportance of three tier sugarcane seed system tothe participants. He mentioned that three tier seedmultiplication program is helpful for adoption ofvarietal and seasonal planting in the operational areaof mills. Most of mills are unaware about theimportance of seed. He also stressed that improvedcultivation techniques are needs to be adopted forenhancing per unit cane and sugar productivity. Hestressed upon the role of sugar mills and theircontribution in the seed replacement in the State isvery low (6%). He highlighted that only 15-16 sugarmills have follow the three tier seed productionprogram in the Maharashtra state. It is mostimportant to replace sugarcane seed once in three-four years. In this context Institute is raising breeder’sseed every year on area of 40 ha. for distribution tomills. Very few mills took seed as per their demand.

During technical session subject experts talked ondifferent topics Dr. RS Hapase gave lecture on‘Varietal scenario in the State, its Planning andidentification’; Mr. SS Katake, on ‘Sugarcane caneseed multiplication & seed production

technology’; Dr. AA Nikam, Scientist, Tissue Culture,on ‘Sugarcane seed Production through TissueCulture’; Mr. BH Pawar, Sr. Scientist & Head PlantPathology and Mr. RG Yadav, Scientist &HeadEntomology on ‘Seed born diseases and controlmeasures’.

Mr. RN Gaikwad, Scientific Officer had shown thedemonstration of single eye bud seedlings productionand seedling planting techniques. On this occasionmessage was given to participants to adopt improvedtechnologies for three tier seed production andreplaced old seed materials thrice in year. Theprogram was concluded with vote of thanks byMr. HB Patil, Scientific officer, Farm Management andDevelopment section.

Wildlife WeekOn the occasion of wildlife week, Department ofEnvironmental Sciences had organized two invitedlectures. Of these, the theme of first lecture was useof modern equipment for wildlife monitoring (e.g.animal tracking system, etc). It was held on October01, 2019 and delivered by Mr. Dnyanesh Rathod. Hewas associated with Wildlife Institute of India andworked on project related to monitoring of tigers.Students were amazed while observing the slides andvideos related to use of camera traps, GPS and collarids, etc in monitoring or tracking tiger. He alsoexplained the application of collected data using thesetools in preparation of conservation and managementplan. Towards the end of the presentation a tool called‘range finder’ was demonstrated to students by him.The second invited lecture was uniquely themed onethno-ornithology; i.e. use of birds by different tribes

in traditional way. Dr. Vinayak Chavan, faculty atFergusson College, Pune delivered this lecture onOctober 05, 2019. He is an academic visitor to EdwardGrey Research Institute of Field Ornithology andInstitute of Human Sciences, University of Oxford,United Kingdom for collaborative work on Ethno-Ornithology in Western Ghats. He presented fieldobservations from Tamhini area of Pune district ofWestern Ghat. In the presentation, he explainedvarious services offered by bird species to forestdwellers and thus, students realized the importanceof avian (bird) diversity in day-to-day life. He alsoshared views on research opportunities in wildlife. In the post presentation discussion, few studentsexpressed their willingness to pursue research inwildlife related theme. In response, he happily agreedto guide students based on individual proposal.
