1 IntroductionThe HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE) is an integrated server offering that provides a flexible computingenvironment to help you maximize the use of your server resources. HP VSE Management Software providesthe visualization, configuration, workload policy, and capacity planning tools to optimize the system resourcesin your VSE. Use HP Integrity Essentials Virtualization Manager to manage a pool of multi-OS, dynamicallysizeable virtual servers. Each virtual server can grow and shrink, based on service-level objectives and

business requirements, using HP Integrity Essentials Global Workload Manager and the various VSEpartitioning and utility pricing technologies. Use HP Integrity Essentials Capacity Advisor to analyze yourcurrent server resource utilization and plan for future workload expansion.

Refer to VSE Concepts and Terminology (page 11) for definitions of the key VSE terms and concepts.

VSE Management SoftwareThe VSE Management Software encompasses a number of complementary components that enhance thefunctionality and flexibility of your Virtual Server Environment, including:

    HP Integrity Essentials Virtualization Manager

Visualization software that allows you to see the systems in your VSE at various levels of detail.Virtualization Manager gives you the ability to inventory the VSE, and provides a central point from

which to configure your server resources for optimum utilization.

HP Integrity Essentials Global Workload Manager (gWLM)

A multi-system, multi-OS workload manager that serves as an intelligent policy engine in the VSE. Itsimplifies the deployment of automated workload management policies across multiple HP-UX 11i andLinux servers and provides centralized monitoring and reporting and improved server utilization toassist in meeting your service-level objectives.

    HP Integrity Essentials Capacity Advisor

Capacity analysis and planning software that allows you to optimize the workloads across your VSEfor the highest utilization of server resources. Capacity Advisor provides scenario analysis to helpoptimize your current server resources and plan for future workload expansion.

    HP Integrity Virtual Machines Manager

The graphical user interface for HP Integrity Virtual Machines. With VM Manager, you can visualizeresources assigned to virtual machines. By providing a graphical view of virtual-to -physical networkand storage, VM Manager lets you view all virtual machines in a VM Host, including resource utilizationinformation.

WBEM providers and other VSE agents

Software that is installed on managed systems. One of these agents is the Utilization Provider thatprovides the real-time utilization metrics displayed by Virtualization Manager.

The VSE Management Software is integrated with HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM), the central point ofadministration for complete resource-lifecycle management for multi-OS environments, and with Partition

Manager for administration and configuration of nPartitions and complexes.

VSE Concepts and TerminologyThe Virtual Server Environment brings together a number of HP virtualization technologies and products. Tomake effective use of the VSE Management Software, you need to become familiar with the following termsand their underlying concepts.

cluster Two or more systems configured together to host workloads, in a way that users areunaware that more than one system is hosting the workload.

CMS Central Management Server. The system in a management domain that executes theHP Systems Insight Manager (SIM) software. All central operations within HP SIM areinitiated from this system.

compartment An nPartition, virtual partition, virtual machine, or resource partition whose resourcescan be managed by gWLM. Multiple compartments are grouped to form a sharedresource domain (SRD). The compartments all share the resources of the SRD. Acompartment can be in only one SRD. Each compartment holds a workload. A gWLMpolicy can be applied to a workload in order to manage its resources by adjusting theresource allocation of its compartment.

complex One or more hardware cabinets that are cabled together and that contain cells (circuitboards containing processors and memory), each of which can be assigned for exclusiveuse by an nPartition.

demand profile A set of resource-demand readings made at regular intervals for some period of time. The demand profile of a workload, system, or complex is used for capacity planning.

managed system A server or other system that can be managed by HP SIM from a CMS.

    managementdomain

A CMS and its managed systems.

nPartition A hardware partition in a complex. Each nPartition operates independently of othernPartitions and either runs a single instance of an operating system or is further dividedinto virtual partitions. An nPartition can be used as a compartment managed by gWLM.

policy A collection of rules and settings that control workload resources. For example, a policycan indicate the minimum and maximum amount of processor resources allowed for a

workload and a target to be achieved. A single policy can be associated with multipleworkloads.

resource partition A subset of the resources available to an operating system instance, isolated for useby specific processes. A resource partition has its own process scheduler. CPU resourcesin the partition may be allocated using Fair-Share Scheduler (FSS) groups or processorsets (psets). Policies for controlling the allocation of resources to the partition may beset using Global Workload Manager (gWLM).

    secure resourcepartition

A resource partition that is integrated with HP-UX Security Containment.

SRD Shared resource domain. A collection of compartments that share system resources. The compartments can be nPartitions, virtual partitions, virtual machines, psets, or FSSgroups.

virtual machine A software entity provided by HP Integrity Virtual Machines. This technology allows asingle server or nPartition to act as a VM Host for multiple virtual machines, eachrunning its own instance of an operating system (referred to as a guest OS). Virtualmachines are servers in the VSE.

virtual partition A software partition of a server, or of a single nPartition, provided by HP vPars. Eachvirtual partition can run its own instance of an operating system. A virtual partitioncannot span an nPartition boundary.

workload A collection of processes in a standalone server, nPartition compartment, virtual partitioncompartment, or virtual machine compartment. Global Workload Manager (gWLM)extends this concept to include pset compartments and FSS group compartments.Virtualization Manager enables you to monitor the resource utilization of workloads.

Capacity Advisor collects the historical resource utilization for workloads for use incapacity planning activities. Global Workload Manager (gWLM) enables you to monitorand manage workloads by automatically adjusting the resource allocations of theircompartments based on policies.

Workloads that are managed by gWLM are called managed workloads. Workloadsthat are monitored by Virtualization Manager but are not managed by gWLM arecalled monitored workloads.

Limitations of This ReleaseThis release of the VSE Management Software includes the following limitations:

HP Systems Insight Manager requires each managed system to have a unique name. System informationwill be reported incorrectly if two systems have the same name, even if they represent the same physical

    13/30

machine. For example, you cannot have an nPartition named the same as a vPars host, even if thevPars host is running on that nPartition. If this situation occurs, you can correct it by renaming one ofthe partitions using the appropriate command, such as cplxmodify(1M), parmodify(1M), vparmodify(1M),or hpvmmodify(1M). These commands do not require a reboot to change the name.

There is no support for IPv6 in this release of the Virtual Server Environment.

This release of the Virtual Server Environment does not allow the CMS to be made fully HA (HighAvailability) compliant. To protect against failure of the CMS, HP recommends that the HP SIM databaseand the VSE Management Database be regularly backed up. For information about backing up the

VSE Management Database, see vseinitconfig(1M). Refer to the HP SIM manuals or online help forinformation about backing up the HP SIM database.

Monitored workloads are not able to track CPU utilization for processes that are in existence for lessthan five minutes. This behavior is documented in the online help. If you need to track utilization ofshort-lived processes, use a managed workload. See the Create Monitored Workloadhelp topic formore details.

A system may contain monitored workloads or managed workloads, but may not contain both typesof workloads.

Any user that is able to authenticate on the CMS will have the ability to create and view parkedworkloads, regardless of whether they have authorizations for any VSE related tools or toolboxes. Aworkload is parked if its system is set to none when it is created or later modified.

Selecting and Updating the Authorized Systems SetWhen you create an HP SIM authorization, you can select the individual authorized systems, or you canspecify a named collection of systems. If the authorization is based on a named collection, it will be appliedto the systems that are currently in that collection when the authorization is created. If additional systems arelater added to that collection or removed from it, you should update the authorization to match the changed

collection.Use the following procedure to add systems to a user's authorizations:

    1. Choose Options Security Users and Authorizations from the HP SIM menu bar.

    2. Select the Authorizations tab.

    3. Select an authorization that was based on a named collection and click Update. Confirm that you wantto make the indicated changes by clicking Update Contents.

For detailed information about creating and updating authorizations, refer to the HP SIM online help.

Activating LicensesThe VSE Management Software products are licensed on a per-core basis on managed systems. An initial90-day license per product and per system is automatically included with the software. When a new systemis added to your environment, you will have 90 days to evaluate each product on that system.

IMPORTANT: You must activate the trial license for gWLM using the procedure described below. Noadditional steps are needed to activate the other trial licenses.

Before the end of the 90-day trial period, you must purchase and install a permanent License To Use (LTU)for each product that you want to continue to use on each system. CPU

Percentage of total CPU resources in use; or the average of the CPU utilization in all of this compartment'ssubcompartments.

    Memory

Percentage of total memory resources in use; or the average of the memory utilization in all of thiscompartment's subcompartments.

    Network I/O

Network throughput (transmitted plus received), in Mb/s (defined as 1000*1000 bits per second); orthe sum of the network throughput in all of this compartment's subcompartments.

    Disk I/O

Disk I/O throughput (stored plus retrieved), in MB/s (defined as 1000*1000 bytes per second); or thesum of the disk I/O throughput in all of this compartment's subcompartments.

Some compartments can include subcompartments. An nPartition server includes a compartment for eachnPartition on the server. A VM Host includes a compartment for each virtual machine that it is hosting. AvPars server includes a compartment for each virtual partition that it is hosting. Click the compartment'sbutton to hide its subcompartments; click the button to show the subcompartments.

To perform an action on a system, select its compartment using the check box in the compartment's upper

left corner, then choose the action from the menu bar directly under the tabs. Click the Deselect All buttonto clear all your selections. Some actions (such as Create Workload Definition...) do not require youto select a compartment.

The System View provides many ways to display detailed information about the VSE resources in yourmanagement domain. Each underlined label is a link to additional information. If you hold the cursor overthese links, or over any other controls, a brief description of the control is displayed.

Workload ViewSelect the Workload tab to display the Workload View. In this view, the workloads in your managementdomain are shown in a tabular form. Utilization metrics are shown for each workload, similar to the systemutilization metrics shown in the System View. Workloads that are managed by gWLM (managed workloads)

have a policy name assigned to them. As in the System View, there are many links in this view that can beclicked to display additional information or to manage the workloads using gWLM. If you hold the cursorover these links, or over any other controls, a brief description of the control is displayed.

Select a workload by clicking the selection check box to the left of the workload name. You can chooseactions to perform on the selected workloads from the menu bar under the tabs.

HP Integrity Essentials Global Workload ManagerSelect the Shared Resource Domain tab to access Global Workload Manager (gWLM). Global WorkloadManager improves both workload performance and resource utilization in a shared compute environment. For servers partitioned with nPartitions, virtual partitions, virtual machines, psets, or FSS groups, gWLM cando the following:

Monitor each application. Determine the processor resources needed by each application.

Automatically migrate processors between compartments to where they are needed most. This migrationimproves application performance by making more resources available to the application at times ofpeak demand. In addition, migrating idle processors to the applications that are busy increases processorutilization.

Additional information about gWLM is provided in the online help and in the following documents:

HP Integrity Essentials Capacity AdvisorSelect the Capacity Advisor tab to access HP Integrity Essentials Capacity Advisor. Capacity Advisor letsyou quickly and safely test potentially costly configuration changes in your data center before you actuallymake them. With Capacity Advisor, you can find answers to questions such as the following:

Is there room on this system for an additional workload?

Will this workload fit on this system?

Can I consolidate these servers as virtual machines on a single server?

What might my CPU demand look like next year?

Will adding another processor bring my CPU utilization down to 70% most of the time?

Capacity Advisor helps you optimize workloads in your VSE to help maximize utilization of server resources. It provides scenario analysis to help you manage your current server resources and plan for changes to yourworkloads and resources. These scenarios allow you to simulate the following actions:

    Resizing systems

    Resizing workloads

    Moving workloads

Capacity Advisor provides the following additional features.

Automatic generation of reportsCapacity Advisor automatically generates reports that would otherwise take many manual steps.

    Trace-based simulator

Providing graphs over specific data intervals, Capacity Advisor gives a more complete and accurateview of resource utilization than focusing on a single peak.

    Ease of data gathering

Data is collected automatically using a secure protocol and stored in a central database for analysis.

    HP Integrity Virtual Machines Manager

From the System View, you can access HP Integrity Virtual Machines Manager (VM Manager) by clickingthe View: VM Host link in a VM Host compartment, or by clicking the View: VM link in an individual virtualmachine compartment.

VM Manager helps you to create and monitor virtual machines using HP Integrity Virtual Machines (IntegrityVM). Integrity VM running on HP Integrity servers creates software-controlled virtual machines that share asingle set of physical hardware resources. Each virtual machine is a complete environment that runs its owninstance of an operating system (called a guest OS). Like a physical machine, the virtual machine containsat least one CPU, memory, disks, network interfaces, a console, and other virtual components. Virtualcomponents are partially emulated in software rather than fully implemented in hardware.

VM Manager provides a graphical view of the virtual machines running under a VM Host, their utilizationmetrics, the virtual resources assigned to them, and the physical resources from which the virtual resourcesare obtained. Actions you can perform from VM Manager include the following:
