Henley Hawks have moved one game clear of South Adelaide

on the men’s State League table after a hard fought victory over Norwood at Brighton Secondary School on Friday night.The Hawks were consistent

throughout the gruelling five-set match, which was sparked by the Hawks energetic first set.The setting of Brad Tutton

USC Lion has lost their perfeect record in the women’s

competition, defeated by Austral Phoenix in a five-set contest.Austral desperately needed a

win to keep their finals chances alive, found themselves trailing 2-1 despite taking the first set.Phoenix recovered, claiming

a tight fifth set to record their fourth win of the season.Hannah Berman was prominent

Mt Lofty has continued its charge to the finals,

defeating South Adelaide in their men’s clash at Mt Lofty Sports Centre last Saturday.Lofty had answers for every

South challenge, as they secured a comfortable straight-sets victory against their higher-ranked opponents.Chris Gosling was solid for South,

but they struggled to handle Sam

The race for a finals berth has been thrown wide open in both competitions, with the winner in five of last weekend’s matches ranked lower on the ladder. Both first

place sides lost, with USC’s women losing their perfect record.

Knights close in on top four

NORTHERN Knights heaped pressure on the top four,

defeating South Adelaide 3-1 in their men’s State League reserves clash at Mt Lofty Sports Centre on Saturday.

South entered the contest in third position, but the fifth placed Knights gained the upper hand with victory in a tight opening set.

After South levelled the contest at 1-1, the Knights bounced back with a dominant third set performance as they went on to record a fifth win of the season.

Jack Montgomery was powerful for the Knights, ahead of their clash with second-placed Mt Lofty next weekend.

In other results, the Knights’ women lost to South in straight sets as they fell to an eleventh loss of the season.

HENLEY HAWKSBoth sides pulled off shock results last round, as the race for a finals spot heats up.Phoenix ended the undefeated season of USC Lion, holding on in a gruelling five-set battle.Henley’s win over Norwood was not so much of a surprise, but the manner they did it in was.The Hawks won 3-0 over the in form Bears, with Beccharra Palmer leading the way.It was a result which left the Hawks a win clear, in fourth spot, of Austral.Phoenix play Mt Lofty (2nd), South (6th), and Norwood (3rd) in the final three rounds. Henley have South, USC Lion (1st), and Mt Lofty.With so much at stake, the sides could well endure a third five-set contest against each other in 2013.

MT LOFTYUSC Lion and Mt Lofty battle in a huge Friday night clash, with the winner to end the round in fourth position.With only three rounds remaining when State League returns after the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships, it leaves the winner of this contest in a very strong position to play finals.Lion face Norwood (1st), Henley (2nd), and South (3rd) in a daunting run home.Lofty also face Norwood and Henley, but not before a clash with an Austral outfit also looking to make a finals charge.Mt Lofty were impressive in their straight-sets win over South last weekend, as South struggled to contain Sam Boehm.Lion were on the wrong side of a five-set battle with Austral, despite a strong performance from Adam Diamanti.
