change is related to decreasing student confusion. Previously, students had to keep track of three separate deadlines—1st 8-week add/drop, 16-week add/drop, and the payment deadline. With the change, students will only need to track two dates. These new dates have been reflected on the Academic Calendar since CSC opened enrollment in February; students will receive a series of notifications online, on-campus and in the mail as reminders of these important deadlines. You can help by mentioning this deadline to students throughout the first week. START advisors will be available for registration assistance, either in person or via email at [email protected], through the end of business on Friday, 24 August 2018 (4:30 p.m. MDT). Students may continue to add/drop courses on their own via MyCSC until midnight MDT. Any ADD requests received at [email protected] between 4:30 p.m. and midnight MDT on Friday will be processed over the weekend to ensure students are able to access the courses in CSC Online by Monday. For 2nd 8-week Fall 2018 courses, the add/drop deadline will be Friday, 26 October 2018. Scholastic Day Scholastic Day is scheduled for Friday, 12 April 2019. The Scholastic Day Committee, a Presidential Committee (http://csc.edu/president/committees/index.csc), worked with area high schools and various CSC constituencies to identify a viable date, as the traditional date is now in annual conflict with high-profile statewide high school academic conferences (FFA, FBLA). Social Hour Hosted for Faculty and Staff During the Fall 2018 semester, the Executive Council is hosting a social hour to meet and/or discuss matters with Executive Council members as well as provide an opportunity to interact with your colleagues across campus. The two dates are Thursday 20 September 2018, 8:15-9:30 am and Monday 5 November 2018, 2:30-3:45 pm in the Library Learning Commons (LLC). Essential Studies Program Leadership Update Dr. Kathleen Kirsch and Dr. Mary Jo Carnot have accepted a joint appointment as co-Faculty Coordinators for the Essential Studies Program beginning with the 2018-2019 academic year. Many thanks to Dr. Matt Evertson for his four years of dedicated service in this role. 2018-19 Department Chairs

New Coordinator and New Name for Disability Services Due to a recent change, Deena Kennell is now coordinating academic accommodations for CSC students from within the Office of Academic Success, with the assistance of Tom Tylee and Janet Hartman (see below). The name for this resource has also changed from “Disability Services” to “Equal Access Services” to reflect current practice. Thank you to Jerry Cassiday for his many years of service in this role and for sharing his expertise during the transition, which became effective on July 1st. Faculty members, please be sure to include the following updated language in your course syllabi beginning with the Fall 2018 semester:

Equal Access

Chadron State College works to ensure that all programs, activities, and services, including electronic and remote services, are accessible to people with disabilities. Upon request, CSC will provide reasonable accommodations to ensure that students have equal access to programs, activities, and services. For assistance, contact the Equal Access Coordinator, Deena Kennell, at 308.432.6467 or by email at [email protected]

The official syllabus template has been updated to reflect this change as of today (1 August). Office of Academic Success The Office of Academic Success (OAS), located on the main floor of the Library Learning Commons (LLC), was created to consolidate a number of student success and retention initiatives under one office. Within the OAS, you will find the Learning Lab (formerly the Learning Center), which provides tutoring, supplemental instruction, and writing assistance. The Learning Lab also hosts study halls for athletic teams and other groups. Career and Academic Planning Services (CAPS) is also now part of the OAS, providing career services, internship services, career and major exploration, and more. The newest addition to the OAS is Equal Access Services (see above), which helps to provide accommodations to students with disabilities.

Some of the most exciting recent additions to the OAS include a quiet test-proctoring room for students with disabilities, an online tutoring station for remote and real-time tutoring, and a group collaborative workstation in the Learning Lab that allows students and tutors to access the latest online resources together. We are also building a Writer’s Corner with dedicated resources for writing assistance, and the Richards’ Media Lab is bringing virtual reality to the Learning Lab so students and tutors can explore music, math, science, and games in fully immersive 3D.

The staff of the OAS encourages anyone interested to visit with us, try out some of the resources yourselves, and help us find innovative ways to work together in supporting the CSC students.

Purpose: The final course culminating/milestone experience may consist of a final exam, project, presentation and/or an activity that advances the knowledge and/or skills of the learner. This experience is to achieve one or more of the following:

• Demonstrate the learner’s understanding and/or performance level of the knowledge and skillsrelated to the course student learning outcomes.

• Advance the learner’s skill and/or knowledge as a component of the curriculum map to bridgeone level of course to another within the program.

• Enhance and develop the integration of skills and/or knowledge to connect major, minor and/orEssential Studies programs.

The latter two bullet points are to foster a coherent degree experience for novice learners. Often professors may have designed courses with at least two of the three bullet points.

Role and Responsibility of Student: By enrolling in the course the student has made a commitment to the following:

• Demonstrate life and work skill behavior to participate and complete course requirements.Employers value this skill. Professors are less likely to provide recommendations unless this behavior is consistently exhibited.

Page 19: VPAA UPDATE 1 August 2018 - Chadron State CollegeWelcome back for another fruitful year. During 2017-2018 the Strategic Enrollment Management Team began planning and implementing efforts

2

• Display support for your classmates via participation and involvement within this experience. Students within a class are impacted by the performance and dedication level of fellow students.

• Exhibit to taxpayers that public support of over 55% of the educational cost (even when the student pays full tuition and fees) is merited. Students have a responsibility to citizens to demonstrate doing their best.

Students must not make travel or similar plans prior to the scheduled final course culminating/milestone experience. To do otherwise indicates the student responsibility has not been met. Role and Responsibility of the Instructor/Professor: By teaching the course the professor has made a commitment to the following:

• Design a final course culminating/milestone experience such as a final exam, project, presentation and/or activity that achieves the purpose delineated in this document.

• Meet on the scheduled date and at the scheduled time, as published in this document. Any changes to this schedule must have Dean approval with documented rationale.

• Ensure course meets the Board Policy 4140 Credit Hour Definition and Assignment to Course Modalities – http://www.nscs.edu/policy-manual.htm. This policy is to fulfill the U. S. Department of Education time on learning requirements, the accepted minimum professional standard.

Summer, 8-week, 4-week, and/or online class sessions must document within the syllabus the equivalency of the final course culminating/milestone experience.
