BackgroundPart of the picturesque Langdale Estate, the Langdale Hotel & Spa is located in the heart of England’s Lake District National Park. It offers four-star hotel accommodation along with the newly opened Stove Restaurant and Bar, which includes The Wine Room and Mezzanine, and Wainwrights’ Inn traditional Lakeland pub. Leisure and spa facilities include a swimming pool, gym, sauna and hot tub. The 35-acre estate also offers five-star self-catering lodges sleeping up to eight people, and 100 timeshare properties – with all guests, residents and non-residents welcome in the food and beverage outlets and leisure facilities. Many guests are regular and repeat visitors.

‘Spending more time with guests’Open from breakfast until late, the Stove Restaurant and Bar serves traditional and contemporary British food in a relaxed setting, overlooking waterwheels and fells. Many dishes feature produce from the estate’s own Smokehouse, where items from local suppliers are hot or cold smoked. Turner continues, “The menu is a mix across the board, served Bistro-style: from lobster to burger, pizza and pasta. It’s ‘three-generational dining’ – from toddlers to Mums and Dads and Grandparents, while of course we also serve couples and corporate customers. In the previous restaurant, we had a couple of InfoGenesis POS terminals and decided for Stove we’d move onto

a mobile POS solution on iPads, fully integrated with our existing systems. We want staff to spend longer at a table with a guest: allowing for more interaction, and enabling staff to work faster and more efficiently. Opportunities for change“We’ve had InfoGenesis POS software installed for a number of years across all F&B areas, as well as Visual One PMS software,” says Linda Turner, Hotel Manager at the Langdale. “Operationally, we have our main Reception area, three Food & Beverage outlets, a full country club and spa. Visual One runs throughout, from Reception and country club to back of house. InfoGenesis POS is running through all our Food & Beverage outlets. The Verteda team was involved originally, setting up the touchscreen POS and reporting behind the scenes.”

In customer terms, Turner says, “We can have up to 600 guests onsite at any given time. It’s a real

mix, including timeshare ownership: we have 100 timeshare lodges as well as 48 hotel bedrooms and 16 suites. That means different types of guest coming through: families, couples and some corporate customers.” In 2016, the Langdale Hotel updated one of its main Food & Beverage areas: “We relocated our Reception area, closed the previous restaurant and opened our new Stove Restaurant and Bar,” Turner says. “This is much bigger in terms of square footage. So it was a good time to look at the technology too, to find new ways to serve customers better, and get the best out of the space and our staff. We wanted to work the new space as effectively as possible.”

by automatically sending orders, enabling enhanced guest service with improved wait times, as well as increased table turns and less foot traffic. The net result is a more efficient and guest-focused experience. At the Langdale, five staff use Voyager1 on iPad Minis. “Our internal IT team enabled the Wi-Fi coverage, from a technical point of view, working with Verteda as it set up the mobile POS solution,” Turner says. “Each staff member has their own section, and each one has 20-25 covers. When you add the outside seating area, Stove has some 250 covers. But day-to-day, we’re normally working with around 100 covers. We may implement more iPads to cover the outside seating areas too.”
