Dear Members and Friends,Shana Tova – I want to wish all of our members, participants and supporters a happy and healthy

new year. As we celebrate Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, we look forward to an exciting new year at the Valley of the Sun JCC and the Association. This is an especially exciting new year as we have just begun seeing the impacts of bringing the Federation and JCC together while planning our strategic vision for the JCC. We are also excited to welcome some new key staff to our leadership team. We have recently hired Anthony Slayen as the VP of Operations & Innovation and Jennifer Grossman as our VP of Marketing and Public Relations. Please see the related article in this Centerline on Anthony and Jennifer.During this reflective, introspective time and period of re-committal, I want to share part of our vision for the JCC and our community with you. Over the years, the JCC has offered many great programs and services. This Fall, our focus will start by working with our staff to discover new and improved ways to enrich your connection to the JCC and our connection to the greater community. We know that only through positive experiences and relationships will we be able to expand our impact and help enrich the lives of those we have the opportunity to serve. The JCC will be known as a place that provides exceptional service and enriching experiences. We are focusing on new programs, ventures and collaborations to broaden engagement through the JCC and within the Jewish community. We will be the place that everyone feels welcome while exploring their Judaism, Jewish culture and connection to Israel. We will be looking at new programs and events that will bring together diverse segments of our community in an inclusive Jewish environment. In the coming year, we will be reviewing all of our core services as well as gaps in services to determine how we can better meet your needs and some of the needs in our community. This includes continued improvements in established operations such as Camp, Early Childhood Center and Health & Fitness as well as exploring new or expanded opportunities in areas such as arts & culture, inclusion, senior services, broad-based wellness and others. While we have not determined our priority focuses yet, keep an eye and ear out for exciting new directions and for opportunities to be involved. We will continue to explore how to capitalize on the efficiencies and opportunities that have come from bringing the Jewish Federation and the JCC together. How can these combined resources make the biggest impact on creating a more vibrant, sustainable and enriching Jewish life in Phoenix. Lastly, in the spirit of Yom Kippur, we would like to start the year fresh by atoning for any misses that may have occurred with our service delivery which may have led to a negative experience for you or your family. We truly appreciate having you as part of our JCC family and look forward to serving you in the coming year as well as helping you achieve your goals and aspirations be they spiritual, educational, physical or wellness based. We also ask for you philanthropic support so that we can make our programs and services available to everyone including those in need of financial or other assistance so that we can be a truly inclusive JCC and help support the many programs that cannot be supported by membership dues and program fees alone.Thank you for your membership, participation, support and interest. Here is to a sweet, healthy and enriching new year.

Here are a few places you may find caps & lids:

• Milk jugs• Applesauce pouches• Deodorant sticks• Used markers• Coffee cans

Because the mural will be placed at children’s level, we are asking that no metal/glass caps be donated. Simply rinse the cap before donating, then place in the color-coordinated donation containers located at the Preschool Front Desk.

We thank you in advance for your involvement and help, and stop by often to see the progress!

A Kaleidoscope of ColorWe Need Your Help Collecting Colorful Plastic Bottle Caps! During the summer, the Preschool and Camp students began collecting plastic bottle caps of all shapes, sizes and colors to create a recycled art mural. Keeping Kids Healthy & Active through Tennis

Shabbat!

The Valley of the Sun JCC and the Southwest United States Tennis Association have partnered up to introduce 10 and Under Tennis to our community. So, what exactly is it? 10 and Under Tennis follows the same logic as other youth sports like baseball or soccer, which use kid-sized courts and kid-sized equipment. Kids learn to play baseball by first playing T-ball;

they use shorter, lighter bats and larger, softer balls. With 10 and Under Tennis, balls bounce lower, don’t move as

How much do you know about Shabbat right now?I would like to teach you ~ and this is just how:

Shabbat happens to be the seventh day of the Jewish week.Shabbat is known as Sabbath when it is English that people speak.

Shabbat is known, of course as the blessed day of rest. But do you know why as I am putting you to the test?

It is known as this simply for this fact:When the earth was being created and everything was put on

tact us Jews believe that it took God six days to create the earth and everything on it, as Mother Nature you cannot hate.

After creating this beautiful planet, he took the seventh day to rest. So Shabbat as the day of rest, is how I explain that best.

It begins on sunset every Friday night. It ends on Saturday in the dark when the Sun is out of sight. Shabbat is known as a time of peace, love and no war. It is a time for harmony and

relaxation. Only good things Shabbat is for.Shabbat also happens to have some very delicious food.

It gives us challah and other Kosher products, that put us all in a good mood. There are three meals that are eaten

On this holy day. One Friday night, one lunch on Saturday and one before Shabbat goes away.

On Shabbat, no one is working, as every family is together. Families just talk and relax, but still help if you’re under the weather. We

always wash before eating. We bless our family and friends. We pray to God for good things. We hope Shabbat never ends!

We bless over candles, the wine and the challah bread. We only think of goodness as that is all that should be said.

Havdalah is known to mark the very end of the Shabbat day. During this, we still just bless, and give thanks in many a way.

So this has been the story of what Shabbat is all about. I hope you have all enjoyed, as I have without a doubt.

My name is Brett Silberman and I go to ASU.I love playing basketball, but writing poems, too. I was a counselor for the JCC during the summertime, when

the kids were wild and free. I love kids and making them smile. When they have fun, it is worth all the while.

Anyway, with this poem for Shabbat, I hope you have enjoyed it - Quite a lot. Thank you. Brett

fast through the air and are easier to hit. Racquets are sized for small hands and courts are smaller and easier to cover. By using this format, the benefits are immediate and within a short time kids are rallying, playing and excited to keep playing. That means kids will have more fun and less frustration. They’re playing real tennis and having real fun—and that’s what is most important.Starting this Fall, Club J, our after school program, will offer tennis every Wednesday to our kids. Come participate in this complimentary new evolution!

Fit Kids Club

Almost one out of five children in the U.S. is overweight or obese and sadly, this trend is not slowing down. Overweight and obese children face an increased risk of falling into the same category as adults, thus placing them at risk for many medical conditions when they grow older. Two important factors that play a role in a child’s weight are activity level and diet. Packing your children’s lunches with nutritious and healthy foods will not only give them energy to get through the day but also establish good eating habits that can last a lifetime. Here are some ideas for lunches and after school snacks:• Instead of a basic sandwich on white bread mix it up by

making wraps with tortillas made of whole wheat.• Single portions of unsweetened applesauce or fruit

without added sugar.• Baby carrots, celery sticks, or apple slices with dips made

with yogurt, hummus, or salsa.• Pack pretzels or baked chips in their lunches.• Individual low fat yogurt or cottage cheese packages.• Avoid juices. Instead pack drinks made from water with

a splash of a flavor.• Air-popped popcorn. Avoid the heavy butter flavor.• Trail mix.• Seedless grapes along with low-fat cheese cubes.• Cold strips of grilled chicken with honey mustard dip.• Low fat cheese spread on whole wheat crackers.Source: MedicineNet.com, WebMD

Why Buy Local?

Why Buy Local? There are countless reasons why buying local food is both rewarding and delicious, including enjoying the taste of fresh food, improved health and nutrition, environmental stewardship, support for family farms and rural communities, and ensuring animal welfare. There is also significant peace of mind in knowing where our food comes from. One of the biggest benefits to buying food locally is having someone to answer questions about how it was grown and raised. What goes into that loaf of bread? Can we be certain that the cow that is now steak lived a life without suffering? How do we know those jalapeños are salmonella free?Developing a relationship with local farmers gives us an “in” with our local food system. At farmers’ markets we can get answers to questions like: When do tomatoes come into season? How might I use celeriac? Often, we can take a tour of the farm our food comes from. Some farmers are thrilled to share their knowledge and ex-perience with their customers. Ask about the challenges your local farmers face and what they are doing to address them. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Ask about the weather! Any farmer will be pleased to talk about how the growing season is going and how that affects the food they grow. Knowing local farmers can go a long way to simplifying buying local.Another significant reason to buy local is to keep food miles to a minimum. “Food miles” refer to the distance a food item travels from the farm to your home. The food miles for items in the grocery

store are, on average, 27 times higher than the food miles for goods bought from local sources.(1)

In the U.S., the average grocery store’s produce travels nearly 1,500 miles between the farm where it was grown and your refrigerator.(2) About 40% of our fruit is produced overseas and, even though broccoli is grown all over the country, the broccoli we buy at the supermarket travels an average of 1,800 miles to get there. Notably, nine percent of our red meat comes from foreign countries, some as far away as Australia and New Zealand.(3)

Our food is trucked across the country, hauled in freighter ships over oceans, and flown around the world. A tremendous amount of fossil fuel is burned to transport foods such long distances, releasing carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter and other pollutants that contribute to global climate change, acid rain, smog and air and sea pollution. The refrigeration required to keep our fruits, vegetables, dairy products and meats from spoiling during their long journeys burn up even more fossil fuel. In contrast, local and regional food systems produce 17 times less CO2.(4)

Economics of LocalThe significant difficulties of earning a living wage as a farmer are often masked by headlines about subsidies and record high crop prices. In reality, farmers are earning less producing crops these days than they did in 1969, despite the fact that American farmers have almost doubled productivity over the past four decades. Farmers aren’t just earning less, current prices do not even cover

NEW! Weekly Farmers MarketSundays | Weekly | 8 am - Noon Begins October 14 | at the JCCCome check out our Farmers Market! There will be plenty of local vendors showcasing a variety of products including: fresh produce, bread, honey, jams & jellies, salsa, olive oils & balsamic vinagers, baked goods, hand-made pastas, horseradish, wild Alaskan fish and all natural skin care. A limited amount of craft, jewelry & gift items will be available. the cost of production. Until just recently the difference between farm income nationwide and what it cost to grow and raise American crops could be counted in the billions.(5) To make ends meet, and often to get health insurance, more than half of Ameri-can farmers work a second off-farm job.(6)

Buying locally or directly from farmers can dramatically increase a farmer’s income. The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardener’s Association published a study that demonstrates what would happen if consumers shifted 1% of their purchasing power to buy locally grown products: farmers would see a gain of 5% in their income.(7) Even better, buying direct from a farmer sends 90% of those food dollars back to the farm.(8) Increasing farm income means more money can be spent locally by the farmer to run their business and home, helping keep the local economy alive.Annually, Americans consume more than $600 billion(9) in food. In most communities today food is purchased entirely at a grocery store or market, with only about 7% of local food dollars staying in the community.(10) The other 93% of the modern food dollar travels to pay processors, packagers, distributors, wholesal-ers, truckers and the rest of the infrastructure that a global food system demands, a stark comparison to 40% in 1910 by contrast, 40% of food dollars spend remained in the local economy.(11) When more food dollars stay in the community, through buying local, they are transformed into thriving main streets and local jobs.

Support Your Local Farmers MarketJoin the growing movement of consumers around the world who are making a little extra effort to find food raised nearby. You might be surprised to learn how many farms there are in your area. If you’re not sure how to find them, just enter your zip code into the Eat Well Guide. You can also find out what foods are seasonal in your area by checking out our state-by-state listing of seasonal food.Start small and don’t expect to change all your eating habits over-night. Commit to purchasing one thing locally each week or each month. Once you see how easy it is and you enjoy the great taste, you’ll surely go back for more!

September - Workout BuddiesThe Olshansky family… Linda and Harold with sons David and Adam are familiar faces as charter members. While Harold and David train together, you can find Linda working with Denise Krater in Women on Weights.

David has dedicated his time to help motivate his dad to reach his fitness goals. “I wanted to help my dad this summer because I knew he needed to exercise and I knew he would respond more favorably to my direction, than to a trainer he doesn’t know well’, David explains. Harold enjoys training at the JCC for it’s resistance machines, as well as running into friends. “My son’s fitness program has improved both my mental and physical health and overall, it makes my day to day routine easier”.With hopes of making a career in Sports Management and staying fit forever, David urges us to never be afraid to ask for advice or help in order reach our fitness goals. Congratulations Harold & David!

November - Pilates ProIf you have ever taken a group fitness class at the JCC, you probably have met Josette Rosene. From Pilates to Circuit Training, Josette is a group training advocate!Josette, a native Arizonian is no stranger to

living a healthy lifestyle. Along with training 6 days a week at the JCC, she is an independent distributor for the wellness company Medaluca, a busy mom of three and surprisingly, a grandmother of 1!“My advice to members is get out of their comfort zone and to try new fitness classes,” explains Josette, who began to work on her Pilates certification for both mat and reformer last year. Some of Josette’s favorite classes are Gliding with Pilates Expert, Gaby Banuet, and X-Training with Personal Trainer, Matt Izyk.Josette’s future goals and ambitions are to continue to be the best mom possible to her athletic teenage boys Zachary and Andrew, be a positive influence for daughter Kassandra and hew new baby grandson, Karter, and to continue to grow her fitness goals and knowledge through exercise and her wellness business. Josette credits her successes in life to her loving husband Kurt, who together try to sneak in board-games and date nights on the week-ends, amongst the busy family schedule. “He is the love of my life and has always supported me in everything I do!” Congratulations Josette!

Harold & David OlshanskyThe Shuster’sAugust - Fit FamilyThe Shuster’s have been an active JCC Family for more than nine years. You can find Aaron, Sel and their sons Gahl, Eden and Daniel regularly working out and participating in many of the JCC classes.

Their advice for a healthy and happy family is balance.“Workout, but eat right”! They explain, “We are all vegetarians/vegans and feel that our health is mainly dependent on how positive you are, having a healthy outlook on life and surrounding yourself with positive, uplifting people”. Aaron shares, “They say it takes a Village to bring up a child and we have three wonderful boys and the supportive JCC community has been a blessing to them and our family as a whole. We feel very blessed to be part of the JCC family”. Congratulations to the Shuster’s!

Members of the Month

October - Fit Couple “When you have lived as long as we have, you have experienced a lot of living”, exclaims Sybil and Don, who have been JCC members and devoted fitness participants for over two years. “We were thrilled and grateful to have joined the “J”…thrilled to see such

a beautiful facility and even more thrilled when we met the wonderful staff”, shares Sybil. “We have made many wonderful friends who have helped us feel very comfortable in our new location... We feel like true Arizonians!”The Lubin’s have always enjoyed living an active lifestyle, mostly through their love for tennis, but they credit their new appreciation for resistance training to their personal trainer Lisa Frieden.“Lisa is fabulous and we can’t say enough about the strength and weight training program she has designed us, explains Sybil. “Lisa has helped us stay strong and healthy…She is truly a gem.”In their 60-year marriage, some of the Lubin’s biggest accomplishments are raising 3 children, inheriting a wonderful son and daughter-in-law and becoming proud grandparents of five. The Lubin’s share their secret to achieving wellness and health is “to just do it” and hope to keep active for many years to come. Congratulations Sybil & Don!

New Eyes: A Play Coming to the JCC | October 29 | 7 pm

Don’t miss this unique play that shows Israel’s human face and reawakens a pride in Israel not felt in a long time. This play propels self reflection about cultural differences, heritage and personal identity. It is about losing touch with who you are and rediscovering it through a series of awakening experiences. This play is a hilarious combination of 18 funny and familiar characters, yet beneath this comedy lays a

serious undercurrent stemming from the ongoing war in the Middle East. New Eyes made its debut in Los Angeles in 2010 and has been a smash-hit, receiving rave reviews and selling out audience for the past two years. It tells the true story of Yafit Josephson, a young woman living in Israel who joins the Israeli army to serve her country heroically. Upon completing her service, she moves to Los Angeles to follow her dream of becoming an actress but finds herself constantly cast only as a Middle Eastern villain. Just as her native country wrestles with the world’s false perceptions, Yafit must decide how far she is willing to go to challenge, change, or accept how others see her and what she is willing to risk to fulfill her dreams and destiny. New Eyes explores universal themes of self-esteem, family, identity and cultural differences. Yafit Josephson portrays over 18 characters from over 5 different countries as she conveys her riveting and uplifting story.“The show is good for Israel. It shows Israel’s human face!”- Jewish Journal“Ebullient solo show! Josephson is a winning presence!”- LA Times“An accomplished performance!
