Measuring Principle
The Vortex flowmeter is used for measuring the flowvelocity of fluids in pipelines. The measuring principleis based on the development of a Karman Vortexshedding street in the wake of body built into thepipeline.
The periodic shedding occurs first from the one sideand then from the other side of a bluff body (Vortex-shedding body) installed perpendicular to the axis.Vortex shedding generates a so-called "KarmanVortex Street" with alternating pressure conditionswhose frequency is proportional to the flow velocity. The non dimensional Strouhal number (primary
head constant) describes the relationship betweenvortex shedding frequency (in Hz), width of thebody and mean flow velocity (in m/s)
The flexural vibration of the vortex-shedding body ispicked up in the primary head via sensors andanalysed in the signal converter.

Electrical connection in conformity with VDE 0100“Regulations governing the installation of heavy-current systems with mains voltage up to 1000 V” orequivalent national standard.
In the case of functional extra-low voltages (24 V DC),protective separation in conformity with VDE 0100Part 410, or equivalent national standard, must beensured.
Most applications will require connection of the PEconductor (standard grounding).

The length of straight and unimpeded inlet andoutlet runs upstream and downstream of thevortex flowmeter should be a multiple of themeter size (DN), as specified in the drawing anddepending on the particular obstruction.
– downstream of reducer > 20 * DN

– downstream of two quarter bends > 30 * DN
– downstream of three quarter bends > 40 * DN
– downstream of valves > 50 * DN

Inside diameter of flowmeter same as that ofpipeline.
Install flowmeter in line with pipe axis, gaskets mustnot protrude into pipeline.
Arrange shutoff and control elements downstreamof outlets runs.
Install a flow straightener if disturbed flowconditions exist on the inlet side.
The requirement for straight inlet and outlet runs ishalved when a flow straightener is installed.
Avoid pulsating flow and mechanical vibration.
For flowmetering of liquids, ensure a sufficientpressure is maintained at downstream of theflowmeter to avoid cavitation.
Avoid bi-phase fluid flow.

Installation
To ensure proper functioning of the VFM 1091(I) K+F vortex flowmeter, the flow profile must be as undisturbed as
possible when entering the measuring tube. In the outlet section, flow obstructions such as valves should not
affect development of the vortex street. The following points should therefore be noted:
