Polyurethane
industry
Polyurethane elastomersare widely used by thefootwear industry for theproduction of soles whichcan be molded as units ordirectly on the shoe. Dow has achieved in thisfield of application a know-how and experiencethat are recognized by theindustry. Dow successfullymarkets fully formulatedpolyurethane shoe solingsystems worldwide commercialized under thetrademark Voralast.Voralast systems are basedboth on ester or etherpolyol technologies. These technologies are suitable for different end-uses and performdifferent processing characteristics. Polyesterbased systems offer greaterchemical and abrasionresistance, while ethersystems exhibit superiorhydrolysis resistance.Among the differences between thetwo production techniquesis the processing temperature: polyetherbased systems are liquid atroom temperature, whilepolyesters require about45°C. Today polyether andpolyester systems are on anequal standing in the shoeindustry giving shoe soleproducers the right choicefor any different production requirement.
Design, performanceand productionBased on a clear understanding of the changing designneeds of the shoe industry,Voralast systems can offershoe-designers the capability to easily develop and produce a completerange of shapes and colors.Voralast systems offer thepossibility to successfullychannel the versatility ofpolyurethanes straight intothis fashion-consciousindustry. Apart from theirexcellent workability, theseversatile systems alsoprovide excellent comfort, light weight, resistance tooil and chemicals, outstanding flexuralfatigue and slip resistance.Voralast systems alsoperform a provenprocessability: being easyto handle, they have been formulated tomeet all different processors'requirements. Recognizedproduction advantagesinclude the flexibility oftheir processingparameters, demold times, and the easy cleaning ofthe molds.Furthermore, the recipe canbe further refined andcustomized to meet otherprocessing needs andenhance productivity, stillensuring quality andreliability.
Voralast “polyethersolution”In some footwearapplications in the pastpolyester systems werepreferred for some of theirperformance andproduction characteristics. Now this has changed: Dowafter extensive researchefforts has been able toproduce unique polyethersystems which offersignificant performanceimprovements.First of all these fully waterblown polyether basedsystems can now offermanufacturers substantiallyimproved elasticity andflexural resistance at verylow temperatures, as well ashydrolitic resistance andexcellent grip. These polyether systemshave dramatically enhancedthe molding process with acut in demold times, reduced frequencies ofcleaning and improveddegreasing. As for processenergy requirementsVoralast systems are alsoenergy-saving, as they canbe processed at roomtemperature. Thesepolyether solutions havebeen able to reduce moldeddensity - lowering them toequal or better thanpolyester - withoutmodifications in shrinkage.Voralast polyether systemsare a concrete alternativeto polyesters and Dow’s customers will alsobenefit from Dow'sproprietary polyethersystems technology.
Voralast water-blownpolyether systemsThanks to continuousresearch and developmentefforts, Dow has been ableto successfully producepolyether basedpolyurethane shoe solingsystems blown by CO2 -generated by the water-isocyanate reaction - whichare commercialized withthe trademark Voralast. To replacechlorofluorocarbons orother auxiliary blowingagents a soft-segmentprepolymer technology -that allowed the design ofa microcellular polymerusing water - wasdeveloped. That resultednot simply in animprovement inenvironmentalperformance, but also in anexcellent balance ofphysical and processingproperties. In a polyether based water-blown polyurethane shoesoling system the surfacehardness is lower than thatachieved with standardpolyether systems,
nevertheless the foam coredensity is higher so thatload-bearing is definitely superior. This end-use performanceis combined with excellentprocessing performance. The lower viscosity of thesepolyether systems improvesflow in the mold, givingbetter surface finish. The shoe soles molded withwater blown systems haveexcellent appearance, greatflexibility and a degree ofslip resistance to fulfillmany markets’requirements, especially incold weather environments.Flexural fatigue resistanceremains good at lowtemperatures, even downto -30°C.

properties and thermalinsulation at lowtemperature down to -20° C results were betterthan expected. These innovativepolyether dual densitysystems perform a"rubber-like" touchcombined withoptimum wear-resistance. Key factorsfor polyether basedpolyurethane systemsare the bacteriologicand hydroliticresistance, that are acharacteristic of thistechnological innovation. Also thanks to the lowviscosity of polyether based
systems when compared topolyesters, a perfect fillingof the mold andconsequently a perfect copyof the design of the sole canbe achieved. The dual density "rubber-like" polyether systems canbe easily processed with theexisting equipment at atemperature around
25°C for bothcomponents.Thesesystems
are fully water blown. Dowcan also offer tailor madepolyether dual densitysystems to fulfill therequirements of thedifferent manufacturerswhile also providing highly qualified technical support.
Footwear with RIMtechnologyAdapted from theautomotive industry thistechnology produces atough, compactpolyurethane polyether withgood physical properties andvery fast curing, oftenrequiring a demolding timeof just 30 seconds. The main applications forthis technology are: dualdensity shoe soles, producedby injecting the compact
layer first,
followed by theexpanded layer shortlyafter; and multi-print injection in which 2, 4 or even 6 soles can
be molded ina singleoperation.
Dual densitypolyethersystems At Dow we have designed anew formulation based ondual density productiontechnology. Tests onsystems developed with thistechnology usingpolyurethane polyetherbased resins have beencompleted with excellentresults at Dow's FootwearTechnology & DevelopmentCenter in Correggio (Italy)in cooperation with well-known shoe manufacturers. Results were impressiveboth for direct injectionmolding, as well as pouringfor the production of bootsand shoe soles. In theseproducts theadhesionbetween thetwo layers -the compactlayer andthe foamedone - wasexcellent. Asfor slipresistance
Low density andhigh productivitysandals andslippersIn a market where qualityalso means productivity,Dow commercializes VoralastGF both polyether andpolyester based systemsthat can fulfill therequirements for lowmolding density and shortdemold times. Especially with thepolyether based systemsdensities can be reduced byup to 10-15% and demoldtimes can be brought downto 2 minutes.
The resulting sole is lighterand better looking and inthe meantime costs arereduced. The processing parametersare extremely flexible for both polyester and
polyether systems andconsequently all
fashion designchanges can beeasily met.Properties likepaintabilityhave beengreatlyimproved.
