Málaga, SpainThe beautiful town of Málaga, on Spain’s southern coastline, remains a thriving port city of Andalusia, just as it was when the Phoenicians settled here in 770 B.C. Under rule of the Roman Empire in 238 B.C., and eventually taken over by the Moors, Málaga was shaped by the infl uences of each of these disparate empires into the distinct city of varied architecture, religions, customs and culture it is today.

CartagenaFounded in 223 B.C. on the shores of a natural harbor, ancient Cartagena became a strategically important port city for trade and economic purposes as it was in close proximity to a wealth of gold and silver mines. The Romans captured it in 209 B.C., and Carthago Nova (New Carthage), remained a Roman outpost throughout the reign of Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus until it was conquered by the Visigoths in A.D. 425, subsequently falling to Byzantine and Moorish rule, and fi nally to the Castilians.

See the ruins of the medieval Castillo de la Concepción, the city’s imposing hilltop fortress, and the impressive Roman Theater of Carthago Nova, a 6000-seat amphitheater built at the end of the second century B.C. Admire Cartagena’s ancient streets fi lled with early architecture and remnants of the Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine and Moorish periods, alongside stunning Art Nouveau buildings constructed in the early 20th century.

Nora, Sardinia, Italy On the storied island of Sardinia, enjoy an excursion near the Italian village of Cagliari, where you will visit the remarkable archaeological site of Nora. According to legend, the town was founded by Norax, the mythological hero son of the Greek god Hermes. Originally a Phoenician trading post, later a Punic settlement and fi nally a Roman town, Nora’s important collection of ancient Punic and Roman ruins features patrician villas decorated with beautiful mosaic fl oors and the grand theater that is still in use today.

Cover Photo: The Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a captivating combination of exceptional grandeur and mesmerizing drama with steep coastal mountains, charming towns and lush forests.

Photo this page: The second-century B.C. Greco-Roman theater of Taormina, overlooking the Bay of Naxos and Mount Etna, was originally built by the Greeks and later restructured by the Romans.

The fabled islands and coastlines of the Mediterranean Sea from southeast Spain to southwest Italy are so magnifi cent that the ancient Greeks associated them with

their gods, goddesses and heroes of mythology. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, built a beautiful palace on the island of Sicily, where Dionysus, the god of wine, discovered

grapes to harvest, and the inhabitants of Sardinia claimed to be descendants of Hercules, heroic son of Zeus.

During this expansive itinerary, experience fi rsthand a unique blend of the many cultures that coexist in this extraordinary Mediterranean region. The prosperous, seafaring ports that were built, conquered and reconquered by Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine and Moorish civilizations formed the beginnings of the Western World on these shores, and today retain the art, culture, architecture, literature, cuisine, philosophy and religious infl uence of their former empires that make them so endlessly captivating.

Agrigento, SicilyThe world of classical antiquity comes alive in Agrigento’s legendary Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, no fewer than eight Doric Greek shrines dating from the

fi fth century B.C. dot the landscape, including the Temple of Hera with its graceful northern colonnade, and the Temple of Concordia, a beautifully preserved Greek monument. See temples dedicated to Zeus and Heracles and the Sanctuary of the Chthonic Deities—ancient Greek lords of Earth and the underworld. Visit the Archaeological Museum and admire the collection of Greek, Etruscan, Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman artifacts.

TaorminaThe charming, medieval town of Taormina commands one of the most impressive settings on the island and is the 2400-year-old center of Sicilian culture and commerce. See the imposing, snowcapped Mount Etna, Europe’s highest volcano and a UNESCO World Heritage site, and enjoy stunning panoramic views of Calabria. Visit the remarkably preserved Greco-Roman theater, built in the second century B.C. and still in use today, located in perhaps one of the fi nest settings of any ancient Roman settlement on Earth. Admire the 14th-century Corvaia Palace, an ornate, Gothic-Catalan structure; the medieval Baroque portal of the Cathedral of St. Nicola; and the Roman Odeon, known as the “small theater.” In the heart of Taormina, stroll along the famous Corso Umberto, a bustling shopping thoroughfare with distinctive Mediterranean fl air.

Stromboli, Aeolian Islands Be on deck this evening as the ship cruises in view of the most famous of the

times due to its strategic location, s that infl uenced its artistic heritage.

The excavation of Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has provided detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire.

de is featured in UNESCO’s logo, was constructed on a solid rld’s most notable examples of ancient Greek architecture.

For ages, the island of Stromboli has served as a beacon by day and a lighthouse by night to sailors.

UNESCO World Heritage-designated Aeolian Islands, Stromboli, home to a mildly active volcano that has been erupting for the past 2000 years and known as the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean.”

Amalfi CoastThe Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features spectacular natural views of dramatic cliffs dotted with secluded villages, opulent villas and sun-dappled beaches that epitomize the allure of the Italian Mediterranean seaside. Dock in Sorrento—one of the most beautiful towns in Italy, abundant with lemon and orange groves and the gateway to Mount Vesuvius and the ancient ruins of Pompeii. This quaint seaside town is famous for its traditional fi nely crafted marquetry and as the limoncello capital of the world. The optional excursion features the stunning Amalfi Coast and a visit to the lovely village of Positano—visited by Picasso, Toscanini and Bernstein, popularized by John Steinbeck and now a favorite resort of international luminaries.

PompeiiThe incredibly well-preserved ruins of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii were buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Discovered and excavated 17 centuries later, Pompeii today is a UNESCO World Heritage site and provides an intimate look at the daily rituals of Pompeians who built their lives here. See the impressive amphitheater, the house of the wealthy Vetti family and the extraordinary Temple of Jupiter.
