Sunset Poppies. That was the title of the work

painted by each of the dozen or soartists of the Voorhees LibrarysCanvas Paint Night on Dec. 2.

The event was the latest in theCamden County Library Sys-tems Maker Month, a series ofprograms throughout Decemberat the eight branches of the Cam-den County Library Systemwhere the libraries provide space, materials and tools for membersof the public to participate incrafts and projects.

Although other librariesthroughout the county will hostevents such as decoupage box dec-orating, wearable art and robotprograming and competition, forthe Voorhees Library, the focuswas canvas painting.

Sharon Sayers of the Paint-a-Treasure art studio stood in frontof a room filled with artists, eachwith their own blank canvas, andguided participants through the

procedure of painting a smallacrylic scene of poppies during asunset.

Sayers said she loves the redsand yellows and other colors ofthe painting, which she describedas a piece for beginners that couldbe completed within the two-and-a-half hour timeframe set for theclass.

Its a painting that anyone can

do, Sayers said. Its not a com-plex painting. Its not a lot ofsteps to it.

According to Sayers, the classwas filled, with a wait list almostas big, as canvas painting has be-come popular in recent years.

A lot of people like to do it anda lot of people like it because itssomething people can hang ontheir wall and then take down,Sayers said.

Its something they can inter-change with their decor. The can-vas painting has become reallybig.

Voorhees resident Kosha Galasaid she learned about the pro-gram while bringing her daugh-ter to an event at the library.

She said the event was her firsttime doing a canvas painting, andit was nice to have an event thatcould give her some time to her-self away from kids and work.

I saw that they were doing acanvas painting, and I wanted todo something for myself, so Isigned up for it, Gala said. Itspretty impressive that the library

is offering a program like this. Also at the event was Galas

friend Anshu Khaitan, althoughneither had any idea the otherhad signed up before bumpinginto each other when choosing aseat.

Success with Learning DisordersBy Carlo B. Melini, MD FAAP

    Website - www.CarloBMeliniMD.com

All students need success. It has been said that success is like vitamins, we all need some. Somestudents however fail to achieve the success they deserve. Subtle and sometimes overt differences in

learning patterns can create havoc for a student in school. The most common neurodevelopmentaldysfunction involves the Attention System. This is the Chief Executive Officer of the brain. It directs

by promoting, inhibiting, assisting and controlling all that we learn, remember, listen to and produce. No one has inattention for everything. Rather, it is inattention for those things that are boring or dif-

ficult to understand. On the other hand, attention for things we really enjoy and care about may neverbe stronger. So it is really a misnomer to call someone Attention Deficit; rather it should be labeledMisdirected Attention.

Often, individuals with this affliction are extremely creative and can become very successful adultswhen they can practice their specialty- do what they like. Although traditional past research did notincriminate sugar and foods as causative of inattention or increased activity, more recent research sug-gests that the artificial dyes and preservatives, found in many foods today, can worsen the condition,

and should be avoided. Recent research confirms that exercise can be especially beneficial in improving

attention. Sitting still all day hinders the ability to sustain attention. Schools that provide regular ex-ercise at the beginning of the day and throughout the day have students with very little AttentionDeficit!

Associated with at least 90% of students with attentional issues are learning differences. They mayinvolve sequencing, fine motor, language, organization or memory. They may be subtle and not readily

recognized without appropriate evaluations. These are students with normal to gifted intelligence; yet,if not recognized and by-passed early, may fail to achieve commensurate with their intelligence. Thethree main categories of learning disorders include: Dyslexia (Reading) 80% Dyscalculia (Math) 10%and Dysgraphia (Writing) 10%. Each, if recognized early, can be mastered and overcome!

Attending school heralds the end of the protection and nurture of home life. During a typical day

at school, students experience successes and failures, many resulting in future feelings of self-worthand self-esteem. Lets not blame students as lazy unmotivated or immature. Rather, lets make

sure they are properly evaluated where strengths and weaknesses in the various domains needed forlearning are determined. Only then will we stop the cycle of failure and lack of success that plague toomany students.

    Santa Claus has arrived

    Have a safe and green

    holiday season

    Now that the holi-

    day season is upon

    us, I wanted to share

with you of the bestways to dispose of

    cards, wrapping

    paper, Christmas

    trees and old prod-

    ucts replaced by new

    gifts.

Did you know that from Thanks-

giving to New Years Day, household

waste increases by more than 25

percent? That adds up to an addi-

tional one million tons of waste a

week in our nations landfills. Thatis why it is important not to forget

about the environment as we cele-

    brate with family and friends.

We know that there will be a

    critical mass of new electronics

purchased this year. As a reminder,

televisions can no longer be dis-

posed of in your curbside trash

pickup by state statute. To make re-

    cycling more convenient, Camden

County residents can drop off theirunwanted electronics at the PCFA

    in Pennsauken every business day.

If you are replacing old electronics

with new ones this season, drop off

your items to be recycled at 9600

    River Road in Pennsauken, during

    the PCFAs normal business hours

    Monday through Friday from 7:00

    a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

    Half of the paper America

consumes each year is used to wrap

and decorate consumer products. The 2.65 billion Christmas cards

sold each year in this country could

fill a football field 10 stories high.

    These cards and wrapping paper

can be placed with your paper

    recycling unless they are

wax-coated or made of foil. Other

    paper goods accumulated around

the house during the holidays can

    be recycled using the

    same guidelines.

    Why not save the

    larger pieces ofwrapping paper to

    reuse the next time

    you need to wrap a

    present? This method

    of recycling is better

    for the environment

    and your wallet.

    Each year, 50 million Christmas

trees are purchased in the U.S. Of

those, about 30 million wind up in a

    landfill. To determine the proper

way to dispose of your Christmastree, please contact your municipal-

ity. If you compost, reduce your tree

    into smaller sections before adding

it to the pile. As an alternative,

purchase a live tree with a root ball

so that it can be planted in your

yard and enjoyed for years to come.

    Sustainable Camden County is

    currently growing trees for an

    upcoming Christmas tree rental

program. The first 25 Concolor Firtrees have arrived at the county

greenhouse and will be ready for

    rental in approximately five years.

When the program is up and run-

ning, you can experience the joy of

having a live tree in your home for

    the holiday knowing that someone

else will enjoy the tree another year.

If you have any questions about

    recycling, please contact Sustain-

able Camden County at (856) 225-

5576. If you have any otherquestions about Camden County

    services, please call me at

Literacy Volunteers of Cam-den County, with its main officein the Voorhees Branch Library, and its fundraising wing, Litera-cy Now, provide free one-on-onetutoring in reading, math andEnglish as a second language toCamden County adults at the low-est levels of literacy. Many localresidents lack functional English

    literacy skills and this impedes

their ability to get a job, assisttheir children in school and be-come active community mem-bers. LVCC addresses this prob-lem by training local volunteersto instruct these adults using aflexible, learner-centered ap-proach. LVCC currently has morethan 150 volunteer tutors workingwith 235 learners.

This grant will enable us topurchase new teaching materialsand software to benefit localadults working to improve theirliteracy skills, said Denise Wein-berg, director of LVCC. Some-times the book we give our stu-dent is the first one he or she hasever owned.

Not many kids can say theyhave an army behind them, but

    12-year-old Voorhees resident An-

drew Stocklin can.At age 6, Andrew was diag-

nosed with Type 1 diabetes, andin the years since, his family, friends and neighbors have goneabove and beyond to let him knowhes not alone.

Andrews Army is the nameof the group started by Andrewsfather, Michael, comprised ofthose close to Andrew who want-ed to support him and the searchfor a cure to diabetes throughwalks with the Juvenile DiabetesResearch Foundation.

Stocklin said the group startedafter his family was goingthrough some financial strugglescaring for Andrew, and friendsand family stepped up to do whatthey could.

We were going through somefinancial struggles with his careand trying to understand what we

    needed, what

was best forhim, and ourfriends reallyrallied aroundus and saidwell help youany way wecan, Stocklinsaid.

Stocklinsaid those whohelped wantedto keep helping and supportingthe fight for a cure, so AndrewsArmy was born as a way to do so.

The group also helps spreadthe message of the JDRF, thelarge non-profit organization forType 1 diabetes research thatStocklin and his family support.

Eventually, Stocklin started anAndrews Army website,

www.fightT1D.org, so those whowanted to help Andrew could seewhat was going on in his life, which lead to Twitter, Facebookand a number of social mediaoutlets.

One of the things when yourefirst diagnosed is people reallydont know that many detailsabout it and the impact it has onthe family, and JDRF really wantsyou to put yourself out there forfundraising efforts, Stocklinsaid. Put a little video together, put a little email together thatsays this is what were goingthrough if you want to supportthe research.

On the Andrews Army websiteand social media pages, support-ers can learn about Andrews lifewith diabetes and support hismedical needs through purchas-ing Andrews Army items such as

green (Andrews favorite color) t-shirts with eagles (Andrews fa-vorite animal) printed on them.

    Stocklin said while the group

has provided financial supportfor Andrew, the biggest impactits had on his life was emotional.

During one fundraising walk, more than 80 people showed theirsupport for Andrew by wearingtheir green Andrews Army t-shirts, which Stocklin said reallyshowed Andrew just how manypeople love and support him.

He said all these people arefor me? and I took him aside andsaid all these people love and sup-port you and this is amazing,Stocklin said.

It chokes me up just thinkingabout it.

Stocklin said that support isalso important for Andrew be-cause he doesnt know of anyVoorhees outlet for those withType 1 diabetes to come together.

I think that the biggest impactis that he knows that hes notalone, Stocklin said. We would

love to see more people be able tobe in contact in our area, specifi-cally that have Type 1 diabetes.

    After having participated in

several walks for JDRF, Stocklinand his family decided it wastime for the challenge of a run.

Stocklin is raising funds to runa half-marathon on team JDRFduring the Walt Disney WorldMarathon in January.

Stocklins wife Brenda will alsobe participating in a run, alongwith Andrew, and his threeyounger brothers.

Stocklin has raised a littlemore than $800 of a $2,500 goal, and those looking to donate canvisit www.fightT1D.org and fol-low the link to his team JDRFpage.

Stocklin said support duringendeavors such as this alwayshelp keep Andrew excited to fighton and someday be a part of acure for diabetes.

Thats an encouragement tofeel that youre not an island, hesaid.

Jack Herman has recordedzero outs, zero hits, zero wins andzero games played for the EasternHigh School baseball team.

None of that stopped the Uni-versity of Maryland from offer-ing Herman an opportunity toplay Division I baseball when hegraduates.

In 2018.Herman, only a freshman at

Eastern, has made a verbal com-mitment to the University ofMaryland on a baseball scholar-ship.

I was ecstatic. When they sawme at a showcase in Florida, I wastold the process would takelonger, Herman said about theearly offer.

The coaches from Marylandsaw Herman play at a number ofshowcases and at a facility in

Philadelphia. Herman said he hasknown for years the Terps wouldbe his top choice.

I visited four years ago, andsince then the school just fit me,Herman said.

The Maryland coaches spenttime detailing the benefits of theschool and he felt comfortable.

The coaches are like your sec-ond parents and stay on top ofyou, Herman said.

    Eastern has won two consecu-

tive Group IV titles and Hermansaid he was very excited to rep-resent his town and the schoolbut mostly for the opportunity toadd to the teams championshipsuccess.

I remember Jack as a youngkid coming to Eastern games andattending my baseball camps. Hisdad and I joked years ago that hewas going to be just like his broth-er Kris, Eastern head coach RobChrist said. Kris played shortstopfor Eastern during Christs firsttwo years as Eastern coach. Ihave been thrilled watching himdevelop into a fine player andtremendous young man just likehis brother. Obviously, getting ascholarship offer from an ACCschool as a freshman is headystuff. I am excited to continue thestrong relationship we have builtduring my tenure at Eastern.

A right-handed hitter, Hermanwanted to go to Eastern since hisbrother was one of the leaders ofthe first Eastern baseball team togo to a sectional final.

Eastern has been successfulsince my brother played here.Coach Christ teaches life lessonsand how to conduct yourself. Italked with players who play forother schools who said that atEastern we get a high baseballIQ, Herman said.

Christ said scouts like Her-mans plus speed and potential fordeveloping into a five-tool player. As a player for the Vikings, heprojects as a centerfielder or mid-dle infielder in addition to help-ing on the mound. Herman is thefirst player in Christs twodecades of coaching baseball thathas received a scholarship offeras a freshman.

In December, many youngSouth Jersey dancers, rangingfrom 5 to 17 years of age, will par-ticipate in this classic ballet alongside guest performers from the

Pennsylvania Ballet and Ballet X.The dancers have been hard atwork rehearsing since their audi-tions in August. The female leadroles of The Nutcracker areperformed by Senior Companymembers and with weekend re-hearsals and several dance class-es during the week, these girls arededicated to perfecting their

ships, they are always excited toperform on stage and they dreamof the roles they may one dayhave.
