The new 1981 model 200 seriescars have a slimmer, lighter andoverall more elegant and classicalexterior. The most eyecatchingfeatures are the new and lowergrilles, new headlights, newintegral wrap around safetybumpers, new window surrounds,front spoiler on GL, GLE andGLT models and a redesignedrear on estate cars. The interiorof the Volvo has also beenimproved, the most noticeabledifference being the completelyredesigned dashboard. Whilst thedistinctive Volvo appearance hasbeen retained, the controls areeasier to reach and theinstruments are easier to read.

For 1981 the Volvo 240 rangeoffers a choice of four cylindersaloon and estate cars ; in totalseven models with variations inspecification and performance.

In the Volvo 260 series rangethere are two saloons and two

estates. The six cylinderperformance of these models hasbeen further enhanced by theintroduction of the B28E enginewhich gives better response andflexibility.

The Volvo 340 series wasextended in 1980 by the additionof the five door 345DL. The rangeis now extended further by theintroduction of a GL variant, forboth the 343 and the 345, with aneven higher level of standardspecification which includestinted glass, metallic paint, frontspoiler and lower profile tyres.

The VersatileVolvo 340 SeriesThe 340 series has been highlyacclaimed by the British press asoffering the quality, and many ofthe features, of the big Volvos in amore compact body. This does notmean that comfort or internalspace have been sacrificed-on thecontrary the 340 offers more ofboth than do many well-known

The New 1981Volvo 244 SaloonsThe Volvo 244 has firmlyestablished itself as a marketleader and a trend setter, due toits unique combination of quality,reliability, durability, comfort,safety and value for money. The1981 models retain all thesevirtues, but present an appearancethat is slimmer and lighter, with

integral wrap around safetybumpers, new grilles andheadlights and new windowsurrounds. Inside, the redesigneddashboard and further comfortrefinements make driving aVolvo an even greater pleasure.

There are four 244 saloons toconsider; the 244DL, 244GL,244GLE and 244GLT. The DLmodel offers a very high standardspecification (see page 3) ; the244GL has an identical engine

and performance to the DL, butincludes metallic paint, tintedwindows, sunroof, plushupholstery, front spoiler,overdrive on 4th gear and lowerprofile tyres as standard. In theGLE, the luxurious specificationof the GL model is complementedby a fuel injection engine andelectric front windows. The highperformance 244GLT is a recentaddition to the Volvo range andhas a 2 .3 litre fuel injection

engine developing 136hp (DIN).Its specification includes alloywheels, extra low profile tyres,front spoiler, black trim, sunroof,gas filled rear shock absorbers,special stabilisers, power steeringand overdrive on 4th gear.

The Big Volvo245/265 Estate carsThe 1981 Volvo estates share theinterior and exterior improve-ments of the saloons but alsohave a re-designed rear end. Theresult is a more elegant car whichis the natural choice of thediscerning individual who wantsthe `Volvo virtues' plus theversatility of an estate car.

The exceptional features ofearlier 245 and 265 models remain-five seats; 43 cubic feet of spacebehind the rear seat (75 cubicfeet with the rear seat down);cargo area over 6 ft long; over 2cubic feet of under-floor storage;easy access through rear door;rear wiper/washer; 30 cwt towingcapacity; tight 32' 2" turning circle.

There are five models in theVolvo estate car range; threefour-cylinder 2.1 litre models-

the 245DL, 245GL and 245GLE-and two six-cylinder 2.8 litremodels-the 265GL and 265GLE.

The 245DL's outstandingspecification includes heateddriver's seat, headlamp wiper/washers and interior adjustabledoor mirrors as standard. Withthe 245GL you also get metallicpaint, tinted windows andoverdrive on 4th gear. The fuelinjected 245GLE has higherperformance and the extra luxury

of leather upholstery and electri-cally operated front windows.

Child SafetyCars are designed primarily for adults,but at Volvo we believe that youngchildren too have the right to travel incomfort and safety. The tests shown here,part of a continuous and detailed Volvochild safety research programme,illustrate all too clearly what happens toan unrestrained child in a crash. In ahead-on collision at 31 mph a child

weighing 44 lbs will be thrown forwardwith a force of nearly 2 tons.

From the results of the researchprogramme, Volvo has developed a rangeof child safety equipment unrivalled byany other car manufacturer. Theequipment includes a carrycot restraintsystem and a unique child safety cushionwhich enables the 6-12 year old to use thestandard adult seat belt.

For 200 Series cars in particulara wide range of accessories isavailable. Specialist equipment,safety items, sport and trim itemsand accessories that give anadditional touch of luxury canall be found in the Volvo 200Series accessory range.

The new 1981 model dashboard hasspecial provision for additionalinstruments to be fitted. Instruments

available include the oil pressure gauge,ambient temperature gauge and voltmeterillustrated here.

When towing or carrying a heavy load, alevelling system will maintain the car'snormal level, comfort and stability,preventing the headlights from dazzlingon-coming drivers and the car from`bottoming' on rough roads. Choose

between a manual system using a garageair line or a 'finger-tip' system using adash-mounted control panel to operate abuilt-in compressor which inflates ordeflates the special rear shock absorbers.

The sturdy, tubular steel tow bar istypical of the quality of all Volvo towingaccessories. It will pull a load of 3,300 lbs(1500 kg) as will the alternative `swingaway' version.

A recent addition to the accessory rangeare these powerful auxiliary lamps. Two186 mm fog or spot lamps are supplied incomplete kits including halogen bulbs,wiring, switch and fitting brackets.

1981 model 340s are pre-adapted for easyfitting of these useful `200 Series type'door pockets, which are available inblack and are supplied in pairs.

Designed and developed by Volvo thisstrong, fixed ball tow bar will pull up to2,200 lbs (1000 kg). (N.B. automaticmodels have a towing limit of 1,980 lbs(900 kg).) A tow bar wiring kit is alsoavailable and, of course, for all thatholiday luggage don't forget a smart,strong Volvo roof rack.

The Volvo caravan mirror is quick andeasy to fit without drilling or screwing.Extremely stable, it affords an excellentrear view when towing.

Headlamp washer/wipers are a valuablesafety accessory which prevent thegradual and probably un-noticed loss ofheadlight `throw'. They operate inconjunction with the windscreen washsystem.
