The Origins of Red CrossVolunteering
Volunteering has always been a vital part of the Red Cross and the Red Crescentscommunity action.
In 1859, the young Henry Dunant had the idea of mobilising women in the Italianvillage of Solferino to give first aid to the injured and dying, abandoned by theirown troops on the battlefield. On returning home, Dunant recounted theexperience in his Memoirs of Solferino which, some years later, gave birth tothe Red Cross organisation.

OBJECTIVE: to improve the daily lives of elderly citizens bymaking young people more aware of the problems of aging
HOW: The objective will be achieved by using role plays andpractical exercises which help young people to empathize withthe elderly and by organising visits for the students at theInternational Schools to Retirement Homes in Geneva.
ROLE OF THE VOLUNTEER: to lead the training sessions foryoung people so that they themselves may be able to train theirclassmates, and to supervise their visits to retirement homes.

YABC (Youth as an Agent of Behavioural Change:a project which promotes understanding andunity through cultures and generations.

New Projects Workshops
There are three ways for young people to get involved with theworkshops:
- Translation from English to French and from French to English- Trying out the games and suggesting ways to adapt and improve them.
Proposing short (2/3 hours) and long (a whole day) versions of eachproject or workshop.
- Presenting ideas to the CRJ Committee in May 2012 so that ourprogramme can be adapted. Students will present detailed plans andpotential adaptations to the committee.
GOAL: to make young people think more about the best ways to advertiseand raise awareness of CRJ projects (facebook, youtube, videos, posters)

Bracelet Competition
The three International Schools of Geneva are takingpart in the Red Cross Youth Bracelet selling Competition!
Taking place in the month of November, the mission is to
sell as many Red Cross bracelets to friends and family inorder to raise funds for Red Cross projects for
underpriveledged children in Geneva.
There will be prizes for the best seller from each school
and a prize for the school which sells the most bracelets.Good luck!
