Why volunteer we hear you ask?
These days it’s hard to get a job, especially for young people. Lots of older,
more experienced workers have been made redundant. It’s very competitive out
there. There are too many people looking for jobs and not enough job vacancies
to go round. You might ask: “How do I know what kind of a job I could do when
I’m not sure what I’m interested in?” or “School was OK, but I don’t have the
skills I need to work.”
Volunteering could help

Brixham Buccanears
The Brixham Buccaneers is for anyone
who enjoys the history of the pirates.
Volunteering with us will give you
an opportunity to meet like-minded
people and to join us as a pirate at our
various events. This can involve drama,
performance, sword work, singing,
dancing, puppets and circus skills. Free
training is available.
We also have a social club on Thursdays
from 2pm until 4.30pm.

Feline Network Cat Rescue
and charity shop - Paignton
We are a volunteer group set up to help needy cats we rescue, care
for and re-home to suitable new homes. We have a charity shop
that is situated at 10 Winner Street, Paignton and is run solely by
volunteers. We are always looking for extra support
to help keep the shop open and looking great as this
is how we raise funds for this much needed service.

one of the residents at weekends.
He said: “At my school they were
encouraging students to get
involved with activities outside of
school. At my primary school I
often helped some of the pupils
with learning diffi culties. I really
wanted to fi nd a role where I
could help others and my Mum
had heard of Douglas House.
Volunteering at Douglas House is
like being part of a community.”

Volunteering with Home Start Torbay can be fun, rewarding, exciting and is very much appreciated.
Our home visiting volunteers need to be over 18 years old, but there are still lots you can do to help us with our work.
If you would like to learn how to organise and dress a shop window or how to cash up a till whilst helping us to continue or much needed work, then get in touch with us here at Home Start Torbay. Our shop sells goods and raises money so we can keep helping families that are finding life a bit difficult.
Many families move to Torbay in search of a better life only to discover that there are very few employment prospects. They quickly become isolated with no family and friends to support them. Our dedicated and trained volunteers offer help and support to these families.

ASrUS TorbayASrUS Torbay is a youth group for children aged 9 -16 with Autististic Spectrum Disorder and their siblings.
We meet at the YMCA in Paignton on Wednesday nights from 6.30 - 8.00pm in term time, and also get together for social events in the school holidays.

Y.E.S, Brixham’s Youth Enquiry Service, is open Monday to Friday 11am – 5pm and Saturday from 10am—5pm for information, advice and support.
We are a local charity which supports young people in our community
Y.E.S also runs a number of projects and events during the evenings and weekends. We provide a free, drop-in service throughout the week in friendly and welcoming surroundings. It is our mission to offer free, confidential, non-judgemental information, advice and support to young people in a welcoming and informal atmosphere.

Volunteers at Parkfield help young people aged 5 to 25, to enjoy a range of enjoyable and fun opportunities, challenging experiences and effective support, to enhance their personal and social development during the transition to adulthood.
Torbay Youth Service is committed to providing professional volunteers, supporting all youth work within the Bay. All volunteers must be 18 years old and over, undertake 12 training sessions and are subject to an enhanced CRB check.

Ten Sing Through St Matthias Church we work with young people in the Torbay area, helping to develop their confidence, self esteem and their natural performing talents as well as volunteering within our community.
Ten Sing is for young people aged between 11 - 25 years of age who enjoy performing arts, irrespective of their ability and how good they are.
Each Ten-Sing group is primarily a contemporary/rock choir; however most groups also include other mediums of performance such as dance and drama. Groups typically (although not always) have their own band of musicians, usually set up with instruments relevant to contemporary music culture. In addition, many groups engage in one or more public performances each year using PA system, stage lighting etc. Having their own ‘technicians’ being another skill/interest within the different parts that make up the whole group of ‘performing art opportunities’ .

Riviera Concert Brass
“Hitting the High Notes”
Riviera Concert Brass was formed some 7 years ago and
has grown into a well respected and appreciated community band. We provide a band for fund raising concerts, thus
helping organisers (fundraisers) to achieve their goals.
The band rehearse twice a month in Combe Pafford School
Hall. We are always keen to welcome new players of any
age and will, if necessary, provide tuition.

Encouraging creative expression and promoting the free flow of opinion and information is who we are and what we do here at Torbay’s only completely volunteer led Radio Station.
If you enjoy media or fancy trying your hand at presenting on live radio then Riviera FM is the place for you.
Offering you the opportunity to participate in the production and delivery of a community radio station in our studio setting, or out there with us on a live broadcast, there are lots of things you can get involved with.
Help us with: marketing & promotion, research local events and occasions, support our web team, assist with technical issues, help present a show, organise the guest list, contact local people and community groups for interviews….the list goes on!
We promote the free flow of information, and opinion, and encourage creative expression. We are bringing social gain to Torbay through training, fund raising, student education (opportunities to participate in the service), and improvement of community knowledge to the residents of Torbay.

Ever thought about acting? The South Devon Players theatre company is an award-winning, completely non-profit community/ amateur theatre company founded in 2005, based in Brixham and featured on BBC 1 national television in January 2013.
We mainly specialise in shows about local history, but sometimes expand to wider historical events as well. We are family friendly, lively and welcoming to all who wish to be involved in theatre at any level, with a strong ethos of teamwork, friendship and community spirit. In the past, our members have gone on to perform in major feature films and train at RADA. Our membership ranges from age 10 to 65 (we only accept members aged under 16 with the permission of, and attendance of a parent), and from professional performers to complete beginners, all of whom work as part of a team to create new exciting dramatic theatre shows which are then brought to our local community. Fishstock BrixhamFishstock Brixham is a charitable fundraising event for the Fishermen’s Mission and was also named Winner of the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen Fund-raising Event of the Year.
This one-day seafood and music festival in September embraces all aspects of the fishing and maritime heritage of this No 1 English fishing port and is fast becoming a renowned national event.
In 2012 we won the Herald Express English Riviera & South Devon Tourism & Hospitality Award for best “Tourism Event of the Year”. This accomplishment and wonderful event could not happen without an amazing team of volunteers and when everyone pulls together in the same direction the results are amazing too.
Working in teams or helping as an individual we find the busy working Fish Market transformed into a vibrant exhibition centre hosting Seafood and Music shows for 5,000 people. It takes a lot of planning and execution long before the event along with on the day.
With boats on show, chefs on stage, kitchens for kids, bands on two stages, clowns, human puppets and performing artists there is always something that you can volunteer to
Great ParksAt Great Parks Community centre you will find there is always something to do.
Being the local community centre for Heritage Park and Queen Elizabeth Drive there is lots of things going on, from Bambino toddler group, the youth ROC Café to the Saturday Morning Breakfast Club - you will always find something to get your teeth into.
Whether you want to help out with setting up the hall for the dog training group or help serve items in the tuc shop at the youth club you will find yourself welcome and your time spent with us fun and rewarding.

The Willows and New Barton Community Association
The Willows Community Association runs a motor project helping young people learn how to maintain their cars or bikes.We have a project which brings senior citizens and young people together at events and outings and we run a church service in the local pub.
Volunteers for these and our other activities are most welcome.
Aaron felt like he couldn’t do anything right until he tried
volunteering in a community cafe. He said: I had no idea
I could cook! I had never even thought about doing a catering course until I started volunteering.”

Brixham Junior Sailing Club Brixham Junior Sailing Club is an RYA sail training centre based at Brixham Yacht Club. We teach young people from the age of 11 years to 18 years how to sail using
our own boats during the summer months. If you have a passion for the sea and sailing and like the thought of helping other young people to learn how to sail then get in touch with us to find out more and how you can get involved.

The Disabled Sailing AssociationThe DSA take people with

For the past 6 years we have offered teenagers the chance to do work experience at the club, we train our older gymnasts to become coaches and love to watch them grow within this role.

We offer gymnastic coaching to children and adults of all ages and abilities. We are a Club Mark accredited club and have always believed in bringing young talent into coaching.
Paignton Community and Sports Academy Football Development run a Friday night social inclusion football programme for young people 12-16 years of age. We are always looking for people to help with various tasks that involve really getting into the heart of the game and building relationships within the community.
Our informal sessions are tournament based with a strong emphasis on fun and they take place on the 3G Artificial Turf Pitch at our Waterleat Road site. Volunteers help to support the staff present at training and without them we would not be able to run this well used activity that sees on occasion as many as 50-80 youngsters each week.

Animals in Distress is a local charity based in Ipplepen. Our rescue centre operates from a three and a half acre site in Ipplepen. It houses a block of kennels, a two- storey cattery and a new house for rabbits & guinea pigs – possibly the biggest rabbit hutch in the world. We also have a small in-house veterinary unit. Currently we rehome over 1,000 pets a year, with that figure continuously rising. The charity doesn’t receive direct funding to support its work and we rely on donations, legacies and the income generated by the staff and volunteers in our 12 charity shops across Torbay and South Devon.
More volunteers are needed in all of our shops, at our rescue centre and for street collections. There are a variety of volunteering options available which we will be happy to discuss with you.

Feline Network Cat Rescue and charity shop - Paignton We are a volunteer group set up to help needy cats we rescue, care for and re-home to suitable new homes. We have a charity shop that is situated at 10 Winner Street, Paignton and is run solely by volunteers. We are always looking for extra support to help keep the shop open and looking great as this is how we raise funds for this much needed service.

My Volunteering
Eat That Frog is a not for profit
organisation which aims to increase
opportunity for all.
My volunteering
journeyKirsty had limited IT skills which proved to
be a barrier, not only with job seeking, but
also with her confidence and self-esteem.
She started using the work club facility and
the Pad in Paignton and got help with her
IT skills. She started to grow in confidence
and experience.
Kirsty decided that she wanted to learn
more about information technology and
administration and began volunteering with
Eat That Frog. After a short while it was
apparent that Kirsty had a certain flair for
admin and IT so we spoke to her about a
more formal placement and set up work
experience through the Job Centre Adviser.
She successfully completed her work
experience and went on to apply for
an apprenticeship. Kirsty is currently
working with Eat That Frog as a Business
Administration Apprentice and has gone
from strength to strength. We are very
hopeful that she will eventually
become a member of the staff team.
Douglas House is a home with nursing care in Brixham, providing a range of services for adults with physical disabilitiesWhat volunteering did for me
M is a young volunteer with Leonard Cheshire Disability and volunteers at Douglas House in Brixham. He plays chess with one of the residents at weekends. He said: “At my school they were encouraging students to get involved with activities outside of school. At my primary school I often helped some of the pupils with learning difficulties. I really wanted to find a role where I could help others and my Mum had heard of Douglas House. Volunteering at Douglas House is like being part of a community.” M believes the whole experience had helped to build up his confidence, improve his communication and he has learnt new skills. His role at Douglas House is influencing his future choices and he is now considering a career in medicine.

Home Start has a shop which sells goods and
raises money so it can help families that are
finding life a bit difficult.
Take a look at these volunteers
1. After graduating from university L was struggling
to get a job, because he didn’t have any experience. L started volunteering with
Home Start Torbay in its fundraising charity shop and gained skills and experience
in customer service, administration duties, accounts and data base entry.
Now feeling more confident in his area of expertise L applied and was
successful in getting a job. He was able to supply his new employer with a work
experience related reference and letter of recommendation from Home Start.
Home Start said it was sad to see L leave as he had become an important
member of the team, but it was happy that he had finally been offered a paid job.
It is pleased that volunteering helped his work place knowledge.
2. Having lived abroad for many years S returned to England armed only with
qualifications that were not recognised by the British education system. S also had
little work experience and was naturally shy and quiet, which proved a barrier when it
came to meeting new people and interview situations.
Whilst volunteering with Home Start S learnt many new skills and gained much
needed confidence. Working within the charity shop not only helped S to make new
friends, but he also learnt what employers look for in a potential employee. In addition
to this Home Start provided S with in-house training including health and safety,
customer service, managing a retail environment, handling cash and using a till.
S has now secured a job and has impressed his new employer with an excellent
reference. He continues to volunteer with Home Start during his spare time and
continues to be a respected and valuable member of the volunteer team.
The PDSA cares for the sick and injured animals of people in need.
My volunteering experienceMeet Georgia. She has been volunteering for almost four years in a PDSA charity shop. She knows that volunteering is a great way to gain experience in the world of retail whilst also making friends along the way. PDSA has such a great mix of volunteers as younger people can volunteer from 14 years old. Georgia fits in volunteering around sixth form where she has been awarded the title of ‘Head Girl’ and she has gained loads of useful skills which will look great on her CV!
