19th Annual Appreciation Dinner Recap

“Team Work Makes the Dream Work”

On Tuesday, April 12, 2016, BCM hosted its 19th Annual Appreciation

Dinner at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church. Volunteers, supporters

and board members gathered together to celebrate one another and the

power of teamwork. This year, dinner was catered by Ambrose Culinary

Caterers and featured a delicious buffet with salad and dessert.

Highlights from the evening included special musical selections from

Varick Barton (saxophonist) and personal testimonials from BCM

volunteers Jill Clark, Torri Evans-Barton, and Len Wager. Our Executive

Director, Daphne Walker, delivered special remarks and recognition to the

BCM Board of Trustees, retiring Board Trustees, and distinguished

volunteers for their years of service to

BCM.

All distinguished volunteers received

customized BCM gifts based on their

years of service that included: a

Certificate of Service (1 year), a BCM

tumbler cup (5 years), a BCM folding

chair with carrying bag (10 years), a

BCM umbrella (15 years) and a

personalized trophy (20 years).

Thank you to everyone that helped make

the evening a success!

BCM’s food pantry is stocked with

food items that are donated by our

church partners, volunteers and

community members.

Food donations can be dropped off

at BCM’s pantry Monday - Friday

between 10am and 4pm.

Intake & Helpline Training

Are you interested in learning how to

become an intake or helpline

volunteer?

On Wednesday, May 18th from

9:30am to 11:30 am, BCM will host

a group volunteer training. During

the training, BCM staff members will

review the role and expectations of

intake and helpline volunteers, best

practices for working with clients

and provide opportunities to role play

with other attendees.

Summer Internship Available

BCM is seeking a student intern, at least 18 years of age or

older, to volunteer in our office during the summer. The intern

would work closely with our Emergency Assistance Program

Managers and assist with providing client and support

services. Duties would include: client intake, helpline, data

entry and other administrative tasks.

The appropriate candidate will be a

compassionate, responsible,

problem solver who has a heart for

ministering to people in need and is

eager to learn. Training is

provided.

remember to let Tiffany know that

you need to make changes to your

schedule or are unable to volunteer

during your regular shift. We rely on

our volunteers to serve our clients so

Parking at BCM: All volunteers

should park in the BCM lot when

visiting the office. Parking next door

at the Actor’s Studio or Oxford

Comics is not permitted.

Intake Volunteers: Client Stories

Needed! As you are working with

clients throughout your shift, please

keep in mind that BCM is looking for

compelling client stories to share with

our donors and partners. If you have

a client story to share, please see

Michelle or Najah.

Intake Volunteers: When you are

filling out a client intake form, please

remember to add any additional

household members and their

information on the back of the intake

form.

Helpline Volunteers: After all of the

appointments are filled, please

continue to answer the phone and pre-

screen clients who may want to call

another day to get an appointment.

Additional resources can also be given.

THRIFTique Volunteers: The next

meeting with Robyn is scheduled for

Friday, May 20th from 9:00-9:45am .

Farewell, Rosine! It’s hard to believe that BCM’s Emergency

Assistance Intern, Rosine Niyungeko, completed her

last day at BCM on Thursday, April 28th. Rosine

came to us from Georgia State University in

September of last year and has assisted with all

aspects of the Emergency Assistance program.

She is now looking

forward to

graduating with a

Bachelor’s degree

in Social Work this

month! Before she

left, Rosine wanted

to thank all of the

staff and volunteers

at BCM and wrote

the following

farewell message:

To BCM staff members and volunteers,

Interning at BCM has given me a lot of joy and

happiness. Whether it was staff members or

volunteers, you welcomed me with open arms so

for that I thank you. When I first started

interning at BCM, I knew that it was a place I

would love going to because of the environment,

and sure enough, it became like a second home for

me. The experience and skills that I have learned

are unforgettable and I will use it as I go on my

way in searching for a full-time job. I will miss

everyone and thank you very much for

everything!

Special Service Projects

Last month, BCM was chosen as the recipient of a

Bible project for two Westminster students, Sarah

and Ella. The school project was focused on food

insecurity in the United States, which Sarah and

Ella decided to address by collecting canned goods

for BCM.

In addition to their canned food donation, Sarah

and Ella interviewed our Executive Director,

Daphne Walker, and visited our food pantry to

learn more about how BCM distributes food to the

community.

Many thanks to Sarah and Ella for taking the time

to learn about BCM and collecting food donations.
