Q8 CASA is considerate of my lifecircumstances outside of volunteering.

Answered: 117 Skipped: 4

Total 117

# Comment (Optional) Date

1 While I understand the need for certain reporting requirements, I do feel that the volume of logging alltime/activites/calls/emails/etc., continual updates to peer coordinator, monthly reports, quarterly reports, after-meeting reports after-court reports, and so on has evolved to take greater importance than what should be ourcore responsibilities of spending time with the children and families and providing thorough, well-thought outCourt Reports. The time spent in non-family and non-court related activies has grown unwieldy, and the lack ofaccommodation for travel or other personal demands is very frustrating, especially when I've made every effort tocommunicate those rare circumstances to my peer coordinator and case supervisor with as much notice andadvance planning as possible. Also, there is no adjustment to monthly report due dates for holidays, which is lessthan considerate of volunteers' family time and obligations.

8/26/2014 1:07 PM

2 I have not started volunteering yet 8/26/2014 9:23 AM

3 I love CASA but when it comes to the training hours to complete each year the classes are mostly offered at nightwhich as a single parent is very hard to do, or they are on weekends which same as a single parent is hard to do.It would be nice if more things were offered during the day while children are in school - not during Spring breakweek or holidays.

1 It's not for everyone....emotionally challenging and takes a lot of time and commitment 9/9/2014 9:53 AM

2 It depends on the friend. This is a committment to not be taken lightly and only some of my friends would really fit. 9/5/2014 1:52 PM

3 The time commitment has been the greatest challenge. 8/27/2014 7:39 PM

4 I would and I do. But I also include a more realistic assessment of the "administrative burden" involved than whatis given in the "official" information from CASA.

7 Not enough experience yet to know 8/26/2014 8:30 AM

8 training classes are offered mostly at night which is hard for a single parent with no sitter. They are offered a loton Saturday's which same as a single parent does not work. A lot of classes were offered during the Springbreak week which a single parent can not do, or on holiday breaks from school. It would be nice if more classescould be during the day while kids are in school.

74 As the deadline for turning in Court Reports has grown ever longer, my satisfaction with that process hassteadily declined. This, to me, gets to the heart of our responsibilities, and giving the Court a report that has*current, relevant* information is made much more difficult by having a 3-week lead time for 3 levels of review. Inall honesty, this time should be cut at least in half. If Court Reports are truly in such bad shape that they require 3levels of review and 3 weeks in which to do it, the CASAs are doing something wrong and the CASA organizationisn't providing the appropriate training and support to correct whatver that is. This is a huge impediment tofulfilling my role as a CASA in an effective and efficient manner.

81 The court report really needs to be shortened. It is way too long. Judges and Magistrates simply do not have timeto read a 10 page report and I seriously doubt the care about out contact list. Three pages max with emergentissues and concerns/kudos is sufficient. Regurgitating the same stuff every report is counter-productive and takestoo much time as an advocate.

1 It didn't fully prepare you because every person and scenario is different, but it did provide the necessary tools to"get your feet wet".

9/10/2014 2:30 PM

2 Training was excellent; but I don't think anyone could be totally prepared for the cases they will have. 9/10/2014 1:43 PM

3 I would recommend coming up with a list for advocates of contacts necessary to call to keep up with the family'srecords

9/7/2014 10:17 AM

4 So much general training to try to get to can't possibly cover all variables. That being siad, there is support fromthe staff and the supervisors that fills in the gaps.

9/5/2014 2:03 PM

5 The training was good but I don't think one can ever be prepared for the situations we encounter. You have to beable to think on your feet.

9/5/2014 1:07 PM

6 Psychosocial issues are important, but I would have appreciated more information about the legal process, options for all parties involved, normal sequence of events, what is the judge really looking for in our reports, etc, etc.

9/5/2014 10:15 AM

7 Training was great. Ongoing training is also great. But the guidance from my case supervisor is what trulyprepared me for actual casework - as I went through it. I never felt alone.

11 There is no way 40 hours is sufficient training for all of the unusual cases but I know it is the best trainingpossible to get advocates prepared as a whole. That's another reason why I love Lois and Marilyn.

8/26/2014 9:50 AM

12 I am not part of the advocacy program. Yes for my LLL responsibilities 8/26/2014 8:59 AM

13 I didn't find the roleplaying portions of the training very useful, because of the artificiality of the roles. I believe atleast some of that time would be better spent on "How the system works in Colorado Springs".

8/26/2014 8:43 AM

14 Did not prepare me for frustrations with DHS process 8/26/2014 8:34 AM

15 As much as is possible -- until you have a case it's difficult to absorb all that is taught. Much of what is learnedmust be applied

8/26/2014 8:16 AM

16 It would be helpful to prepare advocates for the general atmosphere among 'professionals' and CASA volunteers. Many times in meetings, staffings and mediations the volunteer may seem invisible when in fact they have ALLthe information pertaining to the child.

8/26/2014 7:58 AM

17 All trainings have been excellent and I have grown because of them. 8/26/2014 2:46 AM

18 Great training, but there is always something that comes up in the real world which training can't prepare you for. 8/25/2014 5:09 PM

19 As an initial introduction the training was valuable ... however the actual casework is the real training. 8/25/2014 4:56 PM

5 I've been provided excellent training, but it never hurts to have ongoing reminders of the difficulties faced bypeople with limited resources. By definition, we cannot reach the point of true empathy without experiencingpoverty. I can think back to college days, but even then I had a family safety net if needed.

Q30 After the CASA ADVOCACY Training, Ifelt confident and prerpared to write a court

# Comment (Optional) Date

1 I needed some assistance because it is not the same thing writing a court report as to write an essay for school. Ihad difficult to transmit what I had encountered, but was assisted by the peer-coordinator in a professionalmanner.

9/10/2014 2:30 PM

2 I was initially apprehensive as I wanted to write the report exactly "correct". My supervisor alleviated my concernby assuring me she would edit the report.

9/10/2014 1:43 PM

3 I had some confusion but was able to clarify with my upline. 9/9/2014 3:20 PM

4 Learned much more from my supervisor, only general knowledge from class 9/9/2014 10:07 AM

5 Doing a court report first hand will help me to better understand what parts i am missing or lacking 9/7/2014 10:17 AM

6 First time is hard. Very different to write a real report. 9/5/2014 9:30 PM

7 I feel that it would be helpful (especially to those unfamiliar with court reports) to have us each submit a courtreport and have this reviewed/critiqued and returned.

9/5/2014 2:36 PM

8 See my comments Item 11. 9/5/2014 2:03 PM

9 I was a little intimidated to write a court report at that time, but have since gotten better at it with the help of mysupervisor.

29 I felt like I received helpful training. I didn't feel like there was enough interaction of the staff in the groups ofpeople I was interacting with. Some of the other volunteers would give strange or inappropriate answers in ourgroup work and I wasn't convinced they should have all graduated from the program. There didn't seem to bequality control on who graduated. I wouldn't have let them all work a case!

91 I'd prefer to have the training material in a digital format. It makes it easier to take notes and access theinformation at a later time, like when issues come up in my actual case.

1 I'm thinking my teaching and counseling experience might be used more fully somewhere else. 9/5/2014 1:07 PM

2 I have been on my current case for 2 years and in the middle of the case moved to Denver. I will continue on thiscase because I am committed to this child. However, once this case is resolved because of my location I willprobably not continue to volunteer for El PAso County.

9/5/2014 10:55 AM

3 I am having a hard time managing my CASA volunteer work with my work and travel schedule and personal life. 9/5/2014 9:53 AM

4 To early in my first case to say with certainty that I will definitely continue as a CASA volunteer. 8/29/2014 9:12 AM

5 I have enjoyed my time so far. It has been challenging and rewarding. 8/27/2014 7:45 PM

6 I will of course continue for so long as my current case is active. After that, I will evaluate how much of my time isspent in value-added work versus "bureacratic" work and the overall impact in children's/families' lives I'm able tohave through CASA versus other volunteer opportunities.

2 I understand that there are many volunteers, cases, and different obstacles that may interfere with assistance. Iwould just suggest that there be a way to have the supervisor, peer-coordinator, and volunteer to be connectedmore often. Everyone knows and for supervisors to reach out to others.

20 I would like to be able to spend more time with the child instead of paperwork. I have a very limited amount oftime to spend with CASA and I think there is way too much paperwork involved - very cumbersome, too detailed, too often, takes focus away from the family.

28 My response of 'probably will' is based on my life situation (and age) when this case closes. I volunteer for avariety of roles, and they take me in a variety of direction, which I enjoy. However, I can not predict how eachtakes up my time in the months ahead.

35 Please try to improve the process so that I receive copies (either electronic or paper) of Written Status Reportsand Court Documents BEFORE the Court Hearing date. Currently, I rarely receive copies of importantdocuments in time to review before going to court. This oversight diminishes my effectiveness as a CASA.

3 As mentioned above, there has been no questions about or discussions of the Peer Coordinator role. 9/5/2014 10:46 AM

4 The only problem I have had is finding out the court report was due (after I asked for the due date) immediately. Iwas leaving on a camping trip the next day and had to rush through it. Unnecessary stress.

9/5/2014 10:29 AM

5 Most questions were not relevant to the LLL program and I didn't understand a lot of the terms that were used inthe questions.

8/27/2014 8:35 PM

6 There was no real explanation of the new role of Peer Coordinator and the difference between that and casesupervisor and this caused some discomfort and confusion at first. This is probably included in the currenttraining but it is is important to clarify, especially for this of us who were trained before this change.

# Comment (Optional) Date

1 I have experienced some staff members do this and some don't. I prefer when they do. 9/6/2014 10:05 AM

2 Generally the family description on the SEPT sheet is adequate but some things are overstated / restated or notaddressed at all. We are obviously aware there are reasons for visiting parties being there. It is a small space toget a lot of information in. All things are important so it does not need to say "IMPORTANT" in capital letters.Coding of VO and BE etc., is helpful - possibly more coding 'FR' (flight risk) etc., could be used along with astandardized format for easier interpretation. Statements such as "presents only once a month" are meaninglessif we do not know if presents have been given previously.

9/4/2014 11:06 AM

3 I feel that the information provided on the visit sheets needs to be updated more frequently to be more accurate. Itseems that it never changes even though the family situation does.

# Comment (Optional) Date

1 One area mentioned in a quarterly meeting over the summer was the request that the case managers wouldupdate the case notes. I have seen some improvement, but there are still a lot of things on there that are oldinformation and can be confusing/misleading (ex: a note stating daughter has not seen mom since August 2012.This note was relevant for the first visit, but we are now I think at least 6 months into visits and the note had neverbeen taken off. Or a note for a family that says "Will be visiting for Halloween?" I know that was written LASTHalloween. Being this close to October again, that note is about to get confusing.

9/5/2014 1:59 PM

2 Several of us have commented that the family comments need to be updated. Some comments are a year old(i.e. Mom hasn't seen child for 6 months, when in fact she has been visiting for six months) At the most recentSEPT meeting, it was suggested that dates be added to the comment sections, but I haven't seen this happening.

6 I know this isn't CASA's issue, but if you need backing on this issue, I do think from an "on the ground level"volunteer standpoint that the change in having the identified offenders wait (vs. all visiting parents wait) doesn'twork well. Most importantly, it seems the kids are the only ones who suffer, since they have to wait, too. And thevictim would probably prefer to wait over having the children wait. It also causes more difficult transitions for thestaff and keeps the Captain out of the room for longer.

2 A survey largely addresses what is desired to be heard (the subject - not the answer) thus no survey addressesitems totally appropriately.
