HOLA volunteers become part of our goal in providing our children a life full of positive development and new opportunities. We have many opportunities for this quarter in which you, a relative or a friend could help make a difference in the Los Angeles community. If you can give as little as one hour a week, we want you! Please click below for a list of opportunities: Opportunities are with the Elementary Program, Middle School, High School, Art, Music, Athletics, and Alumni departments. SmartStart/Elementary School Elementary Tutors/Homework Assistance : We are looking for volunteers to help students with their homework assignments in language arts, writing, math, science and social studies. Volunteers will provide one- on-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Volunteer hours requested: M – Th from 3:30 pm to 4:45pm. Girls on the Run Helpers : This session SmartStart is collaborating with the Girls on the Run Program for HOLA girls in 3 rd – 5 th grade. This is a positive youth development program which combines an interactive curriculum and running to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls. We are looking for volunteers to assist and help get these girls to move their bodies by running, skipping, or leaping. Volunteer hours requested: T or Th from 4:45pm to 6:00 pm. 1,2,3 Chess Club Volunteers: We are seeking volunteers to work with our lower elementary students on learning the basics of chess playing, incorporating math concepts and logical thinking. Chess experience required. Volunteer hours requested: Th from 5-6pm. ROPE /High School High School Tutors/Homework Assistance : Volunteers are needed to help students with their homework assignments algebra, physics, calculus, geometry, biology, chemistry, economics, history, and English. Volunteers will provide one-on-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Volunteer hours requested: M – Th from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Mentors for High School Seniors: Volunteers are needed to help mentor one or two high school seniors during the 2012/13 school year. Mentors help guide students through the college and scholarship application process. We are especially looking for bilingual candidates, so that the we can involve the families of the students in the college process. This year, our seniors are heading to Brown, Berkeley, UCLA, Wellesley, and a slew of other schools near and far. The program will start this summer, and will carry through until next April/May, but often times mentors develop lasting relationships with their mentees. Volunteer hours requested: Weekly time commitment is approx two hours a week.

SmartStart/Elementary School

Elementary Tutors/Homework Assistance: We are looking for volunteers to help students with their homework assignments in language arts, writing, math, science and social studies. ART

Class Assistants: We are looking for committed individuals to assist our students and instructors in their classes. Volunteers will help prepare materials and mentor students. Volunteers do not need a background in art to get involved. Examples of classes that need assistance are painting, new media, paper crafts, sculpture, mixed media, printmaking, and/or ceramics. Volunteers are needed for at least one hour a week. Volunteer hours requested: Tuesday 4:30-6:30pm, Wednesday from 4:30-6:30pm, and/or Friday from 3:30-5:30pm. Ceramics Helpers: We are looking for volunteers to assist the Ceramics Instructor and help students complete their projects and occasionally help the instructor load the kiln and do prep work. Experience with ceramics is helpful but is not required (training will be provided). We are looking for a patient and reliable person for this position. Volunteer hours requested: Mon, Wed, and Thur from 4:30-6:30pm and/or Tue 5-6pm. Volunteer needed for at least one hour a week.

Music/YOLA at HOLA

Music Homework Tutors and Class Assistants: Homework Tutoring Volunteers: YOLA at HOLA is in need of volunteers to assist students (grades 1-6) with completing and understanding their homework. Duties would include assisting the YOLA at HOLA Academic Tutoring Faculty, helping students who are struggling with homework, assisting students with special projects and acting as a positive role model and mentor. Volunteer hours requested: Any consistent weekly time(s) Monday-Thursday from 3-7pm or Friday 4-5:30pm. Orchestra Volunteers: YOLA at HOLA is in need of high-level musicians who play an orchestral instrument to come in and assist our beginning students (grades 1-6). Duties include assisting teachers during rehearsals, conducting pull out lessons and acting as a positive role model and mentor. Requirements: High level of proficiency on instrument -College/professional music experience -Advanced high school musicians invited to interview -Amateur musicians with high proficiency invited to interview Instruments of need include: -Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello (String Bass welcome) -Brass: Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Euphonium -Woodwinds: Clarinet, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon Music Creativity and Choir Class Volunteers-YOLA at HOLA YOLA at HOLA is in need of positive volunteers to assist lower elementary school grade students in Music Creativity and Choir Class. Duties include assisting YOLA at HOLA faculty, learning alongside the students to model behavior, shadowing students with special needs and acting as a positive role model and mentor. Volunteer hours requested: Hours: Any consistent weekly time(s) Monday-Thursday from 3-7pm or Saturday from 9am-12pm -No knowledge of music required -Willingness to try and learn new things -Ability to connect with students as a positive role model and teacher assistant -Willingness to assist the teacher

PAT Program (High School)

Homework Assistance and Tutoring: Volunteers will primarily tutor High School Junior students in Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, English, Grammar and writing with their homework assignments in subjects such as language arts, writing, math, science and social studies. They provide one-ono-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Volunteer hours requested: M – W from 4:00 pm to 6 pm and T-Th from 5pm-7pm.

Athletics

Soccer Program Assistant: Volunteers are needed to assist with various administrative duties in soccer program. Volunteers are also needed to assist with coaching during practices and games. Practices are weekdays after 4 pm for one hour per week and games are held on Saturdays between 8am-4pm.

Alumni

College Level Homework Tutor: Volunteers primarily help students with their homework assignments in algebra, physics, calculus, geometry, biology, chemistry, economics, government, and English. They provide one-on-one assistance when supplemental help is needed. Tutoring hours are scheduled based on tutor and student availability.

Volunteer Requirements

• An interview with volunteer coordinator • Fill out volunteer application and waiver • Copy of picture ID, driver’s license or school ID • Free Background Check
