Cinco Charities provides resources and a home for individuals seeking and receiving medical care in the Katy area. Its Ballard House provides temporary housing for patients’ families and caregivers and features 24 guest suites, a library, chapel, common kitchen and dining area, game room, and outdoor spaces. Volunteers take on a variety of roles, including receptionist duties, yard work, house cleaning, preparing meals and helping with minor tasks.

The First United Methodist Church in Katy is home to Home Delivered Meals of Katy The Society of St. Stephen, which has coordinated home delivered meals since 1984. The group delivers hot meals five days a week to homebound seniors, disabled or seriously ill adults across the Katy area.

Fort Bend County Public Libraries – Cinco Ranch Branch accepts applications for a wide range of volunteers. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. The Arc of Katy provides camps and programs for children and adults with disabilities that help with life skills, organize social events, provide entertainment and a safe social setting. ARTreach is a nonprofit arts educational outreach program that provides mentoring and art-related programs with professional artists to children and families at risk, special needs groups and senior citizens. It is seeking volunteers to share their time and talents with others.

Christ Clinic of Katy serves the uninsured and those without governmental assistance in the Katy area. Founded in 2000, it has served more than 7,000 patients. Its staff is made up of volunteer medical staff including doctors, nurses and administrative assistants. Volunteers are needed to help plan fundraisers, act as lab technicians, pharmacy assistants and more. Volunteer information sessions are held twice a month on Mondays.

Friends of Maud Marks Library is an organization dedicated to providing programs for children and adults, as well as books and equipment to the library and community. High school age students can volunteer throughout the school year and junior high age students can volunteer in the summer. Volunteers assist with fundraisers, book sales, shelving and donations.

Halter Inc. provides equine therapy, specifically with miniature horses, for children with disabilities. It also provides opportunities for at-risk teens as well as teenagers with court-ordered community service, training and riding programs. Katy Christian Ministries (KCM) is a social service nonprofit agency. It offers a wide variety of services including financial assistance, food pantries, and a crisis center for domestic abuse. KCM offers a variety of opportunities for those interested in volunteering, including age-appropriate services, which include food and furniture drives, assisting with store sales and donations as well as fundraisers, working in the community garden and also the food pantry. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old.

Katy Heritage Society has been preserving local heritage for more than three decades. It counts on volunteers to keep their historic homes open for public tours the first weekend of every month. Katy Prairie Conservancy works to preserve and educate the public about the Katy Prairie in west Houston. It offers tours as well as information on wildlife, native plants and the importance of preservation. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout the year, such as taking care of plants and removing unwanted species, and those interested residents can sign up online.

Katy Rocks provides music education and access to instruments to children at low cost. It offers music lessons, a space for live performances and assistance in creating music programs for local organizations. Volunteers are needed in all areas, such as music teachers, performers and other musical experts or enthusiasts.

Katy Visual and Performing Arts Center provides visual and performing art programs along with other enrichment opportunities through live theater performances and classes for children. This nonprofit organization offers music, art shows and live theater throughout the year. Volunteers, age 16 and older, can assist with concessions, production support and art projects.

completion of a new patient tower in January 2016, more volunteers will be needed. Tasks include working directly with patients to assisting in clerical work. Volunteers are asked to commit to four hours a week for a minimum of one year. Unit-specific training is provided for each placement, and volunteers may cross-train in several areas of the hospital. Volunteers receive free parking and lunch, along with a free annual influenza shot and TB skin test.

Pregnancy Help Center is dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those facing an unplanned pregnancy and offers free ultrasounds and pregnancy tests. The center educates on sexual responsibility and offers Christ-centered counseling. Volunteer opportunities for adults ages 18 and older include medical services, administrative assistance and mentoring.

Project C.U.R.E. is headquartered in Denver but runs one of its four national distribution centers in Houston. It collects donated medical supplies and ships them to clinics in developing countries. The operation is run almost entirely by volunteers, who perform tasks such as identifying and sorting medical supplies.

RSVP is America’s largest volunteer network for people age 55 and older. The group offers a full range of volunteer opportunities with local organizations in Harris and Waller counties, including assisting in early childhood development programs, helping the elderly and disabled through home delivered meals, Medicare and senior fraud education and telephone reassurance programs.

South Texas Animal Adoption Resource is a no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary for abandoned animals. It provides spacious dog runs for animals instead of cages, and the entire organization is fueled by donations. Volunteers are needed to help clean the dog runs, perform yard maintenance, screen potential adopting families, groom and play with animals, and aid in fundraising efforts. Adult and teen volunteers

Special Pals offers temporary shelter and medical treatment to homeless animals, as well as affordable veterinary services for animals in the community. Special Pals is a no-kill, nonprofit animal shelter that relies on donations to continue making an effect. Youth and student volunteers are encouraged to apply. Volunteers age 12–15 years old are required to attend orientation and volunteer with a parent, teacher or guardian. Volunteers 16–17 years old will need to attend orientation with a parent, teacher or guardian, but will be able to volunteer on their own after that.

Texas Children’s Hospital – West Campus volunteers make commitments to support patients, families and staff in a selected assignment once a week for a two–three hour shift for at least a minimum of six months. Although TCH does not offer opportunities for clinical exposure or shadowing medical staff, there are a variety of volunteer assignments available.

Volunteers with Houston Methodist West Hospital can also assist in a variety of tasks at Christus St. Catherine Hospital. There are numerous programs to fit individual time commitments, schedules, abilities and interests. Volunteers may work directly with patients or choose to work behind-the-scenes providing administrative support.
