completion of a new patient tower in January 2016, more volunteers will be needed. Tasks include working directly with patients to assisting in clerical work. Volunteers are asked to commit to four hours a week for a minimum of one year. Unit-specific training is provided for each placement, and volunteers may cross-train in several areas of the hospital. Volunteers receive free parking and lunch, along with a free annual influenza shot and TB skin test.

Pregnancy Help Center is dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those facing an unplanned pregnancy and offers free ultrasounds and pregnancy tests. The center educates on sexual responsibility and offers Christ-centered counseling. Volunteer opportunities for adults ages 18 and older include medical services, administrative assistance and mentoring.

Project C.U.R.E. is headquartered in Denver but runs one of its four national distribution centers in Houston. It collects donated medical supplies and ships them to clinics in developing countries. The operation is run almost entirely by volunteers, who perform tasks such as identifying and sorting medical supplies.

RSVP is America’s largest volunteer network for people age 55 and older. South Texas Animal Adoption Resource is a no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary for abandoned animals. It provides spacious dog runs for animals instead of cages, and the entire organization is fueled by donations. Volunteers are needed to help clean the dog runs, perform yard maintenance, screen potential adopting families, groom and play with animals, and aid in fundraising efforts. Adult and teen volunteers

Special Pals offers temporary shelter and medical treatment to homeless animals, as well as affordable veterinary services for animals in the community. Special Pals is a no-kill, nonprofit animal shelter that relies on donations to continue making an effect. Youth and student volunteers are encouraged to apply. Volunteers age 12–15 years old are required to attend orientation and volunteer with a parent, teacher or guardian. Volunteers 16–17 years old will need to attend orientation with a parent, teacher or guardian, but will be able to volunteer on their own after that.

Texas Children’s Hospital – West Campus volunteers make commitments to support patients, families and staff in a selected assignment once a week for a two–three hour shift for at least a minimum of six months. Although TCH does not offer opportunities for clinical exposure or shadowing medical staff, there are a variety of volunteer assignments available.
