Are you interested in new experiences and challenges? Or maybe a career in teaching, childcare or recreation? Do you have a love of children and enjoy being in a leadership role? The YMCA is looking for young people 16+ to become a Leader’s In Training (LIT) on our school holiday programmes. As a YMCA LIT you will work alongside YMCA staff and learn how to work with children.

You'll also have the chance to: Make new friends and become part of an awesome team

Develop leadership skills Learn how to manage groups of children

Increase your self-confidence Take part in regular social and adventure based activities

Try new and exciting challenges Get all expenses paid trips to choice destinations

Get a YMCA certificate of recognition for your CV

Have lots of fun!

The Programme This is a voluntary, non-competitive programme for those aged 16 +, which focuses on developing the person, their skill sets and experiences in out of school care and recreation .

Why be involved? Volunteering on a holiday programme is a fantastic way to develop leadership skills and gain experience working with people. Holiday programmes are a huge amount of fun and a very valuable way to give back to the community and gain invaluable skills. Each school holiday period the YMCA runs up to 10 different programmes all over the region, offering a variety of activities that include arts and crafts, sports and games, cooking, day trips and outdoor activities. As a volunteer leader you will work as part of a team, alongside experienced staff. You can expect to get involved with the kids, learn how to manage groups, role model a positive attitude and have a great experience! If you are thinking of studying any field that relates to working with children or just want a super fun and rewarding experience then this is for you!

Complete your Duke of Edinburgh requirements through the YMCA!!

Requirements Be 16 years or over

Attend at least one, three to four hour training session per term Volunteer at least 2-3 days each Holiday Programme Period

Be able to get yourself to YMCA trainings and holiday programmes

Participate in one debrief per term Have fun participating in a team event eg tenpin bowling

Desirable Attributes Interest in children, recreation and activities

Honest, punctual and reliable

Energetic and flexible attitude Desire to learn, develop and grow

What do the Training Modules include?

Induction Training to YMCA Out of School Care and Recreation, including how to work in a professional work environment

What makes a great leader, planning and running activities and games, and connecting with children in an effective manner.

Introduction to Behaviour Management, including positive behaviour guidelines, providing constructive feedback to children, and how to respond to challenging behaviour

Health and Safety & Risk Management.

Review of the holiday programme eg. What

future ideas

Reflecting on personal achievements and

evaluation of goals

Team events may be part of the debrief or

stand alone activities

What Else? What better way to develop yourself than to participate in

the end of year YMCA Volunteers Camp at Camp Kaitoke! Our camp

programme can include leadership activities, bush craft; kayaking;

canoeing; archery; high ropes course; teambuilding; orienteering and

more.
