Volunteer Recognition

This program is designed to provide recognition andawards to VFW members who volunteer their time inservice through outside organizations. Recognition is inthe form of certificates and/or lapel pins which aregiven to volunteers who have completed the number ofhours prescribed for those awards.

The individual in charge of a local community serviceorganization such as a School, Youth Group, a FoodPantry or a Shelter will sign the validation form for theVFW or non-member VFW volunteer.

Note: Use the VFW National Hospital VolunteerRecognition Program to recognize hospital volunteerservice. Contact your Department Hospital Chairman formore information.

National Community Service Department will providethe appropriate award for presentation to the volunteerupon receipt of a completed request form properlysigned by the coordinator for the community serviceprogram, Post Commander and the DepartmentAdjutant. Awards will be made in accordance with thefollowing schedule.

The award pin includes the Cross of Malta, the words"Community Service and VFW Volunteer" and theaccumulated volunteer hours. The certificate willrecognize the volunteer for attaining the appropriatecumulative hour level.

Pins are to be requested on the prescribed form fromthe National Community Service Department.Completed forms are to be forwarded to theDepartment Adjutant for signature. Forms are thenforwarded to the Director at National Headquarters.

Eligibility1. A VFW member in good standing performing

volunteer service for a community serviceorganization is eligible to receive an award.

2. Such volunteer service must be given under therepresentation of the VFW.

3. Volunteer service rendered under sponsorship ofany other organization is not recognized for thispurpose.

Some examples of volunteer work benefiting non-members are: coaching youth, working at a food pantry,conducting flag presentations in front of schools oryouth groups and supporting funeral homes/cemeteriesby providing honor guard details for non-memberveterans.

One Of A KindOnly one award of a kind will be furnished to eachvolunteer. For instance, a volunteer who has served 450hours is not eligible to receive three 150-hour pins.Replacement awards may be furnished on request.

Non-Member AwardsNon-members volunteering under the sponsorship ofthe VFW may be issued a certificate once a year for thenumber of hours served.

ProcedureUsing the form, the VFW Post Commander (if the awardis for the Post Commander, the Sr. or Jr. ViceCommander should sign and submit the form) shouldobtain the number of hours served by the volunteerfrom the local community service organization alongwith a signed statement from the organization on theirletterhead, explaining the type of volunteer workcompleted. The completed form and statements shouldbe sent to National Headquarters in Kansas City, Mo.,where the awards are shipped from.
