Dear Gardener,
Want to become a gardening superstar and contribute to your community? As a Master Gardener Volunteer (MGV), you’ll do this, build social networks, and acquire valuable, real-word skills.
The Master Gardener program is designed to empower you to serve your community.
Master Gardener Volunteers are a tremendous resource to Jackson County. MGVs address local issues by providing valued educational information and organizing projects related to gardening and horticulture.
The Level 1 training introduces a broad range of horticulture topics and familiarizes participants with research-based information related to gardening. You’ll learn how to answer gardening questions and develop skills such as motivating and managing volunteers.
As a Master Gardener Volunteer, you will:
Learn the basics, and improve upon your knowledge
of gardening and horticulture;
Understand foundations of plant and soil science,
use of conventional and organic approved
pesticides, fertilizers, and soil amendments;
Correctly identify and manage problems in fruit,
vegetable and ornamental plants;
Increase your awareness of the value of the interior
and exterior landscape to human health, well-being
and quality of life;
Volunteer activities include:
Responding to horticulture inquiries with non-biased,
research-based information;
Provide information and knowledge to those who
want to grow fresh produce and reduce their food
expenses;
Participate in gardening workshops at Community
Gardens;
Create educational programs for youth -
horticulture, science, responsibility and leadership

Becoming a Certified MGV…
Anyone 18 years or older can become a Master
Gardener Volunteer, and no previous experience is
required. Being an MGV is a lot about plants. It’s
also about working with people, such as youth, elderly
and differently abled people. To earn your
certification, you will attend the twelve-week classes,
pass the exam, and complete 24 hours of garden
related volunteer service.
The program includes a mix of classroom instruction,
and at-home reading, and hands-on activities.
To participate you must complete a volunteer
agreement and pass a background check. Request and
application from the Jackson County UW-Extension
office.
