A Note from the EditorDo South Africans who have come to live in Israel help on a volunteer basis as much as they did inS o u t h A f r i c a ?

For many, even those who have had a strong commitment to community service, the answer isprobably 'not really'. Financial and career demands, the elTorts of adaptation to a new way of life, and the sheer daily slog just take up too much time and energy.Yet there are many former South Africans who do an immense amount of unsung volunteer service, and many more who would like to devote their time and talents, if only they were shown how.

This issue of Telfed Is aimed at highlighting some of the work of those generous-spirited people whoare doing so much to help their fellow man, and at suggesting ways others can become involved.Giving a helping hand has always been a basic element of Jewish tradition. And as any activevolunteer will tell you, you get far more than you give.

Firstly, another word of thanks to all my friends and clients who continue to give me theirsupport. It's especially nice to see faces that I haven't seen for many years.

On the travel scene, things are pretty hectic, with the summer rush in full swing,Although many people are travelling, the feeling in the industry is that .hero will be atleast a 20% decrease this year — not surprising when you think what happened last year.

Popular destinations continue to be London, with relatively cheap flights, and ourcharters to the Greek Islands or Spain, which are very reasonable and promises beautifulweek of relaxation. Airfares to the States have also come tumbling down to the $ 699mark, allowing an American dream to come true for many.

On the South African scene, the m'uch-talked about charter flight is on the point of beingfinalized and rumour has it that Maof will start to fly in September to Swaziland. This willof course entail a 6 hour bus trip to Johannesburg and back. As yet, nothing is definite, sowait and see. I will keep you informed.

I've had a few more cases of people who have to travel urgently and found that theirdocuments are up to date, so please check that your papers are valid.

My staff and I will of course be happy to assist you with all travel arrangements andadvice. We speak your language.

Best regards,

The Te l f ed Vo lun tee r Award

This year, for the'first lime, Telfed has decidedto honour a former South African now living inIsrael who best exemplifies the spirit ofvoluntary giving, and who has made anouts tand ing cont r ibu t ion in a vo lun tarycapacity to any aspect of society in Israel.The idea for the award originated with ex-Chairman of the SAZF in Israel, Hertzel Katz, am e m b e r o f f o r m e r S t a t e P r e s i d e n t I t z h a k

"It seemed to me that honouring volunteers wasa worthy idea, and the Fed should have its ownaward. Although most people probably haveless time here to spend on volunteer activitiesthan they do in South Africa, there are stillmany exemplary volunteers".The award was designed to give modestrecogn i t ion and suppor t to the unsungvolunteers who do so much to improve societyand to serve as encouragement to others. Thewinner is-to receive a trophy and a sum ofmoney to be donated to the charity of herc h o i c e .

The Committee was gratified by the response, which was large and of a very high level, andwhich made the final decision very difficult.Based on guidel ines used by the StatePres iden t ' s Commi t tee , Te l fed cons idered in

Mrs. Danilowitz is a 72 year old widow, aretired teacher who came to Israel in 1972 and

Before coming to Israel, Mrs. Danilowitz wasactive in Krugersdorp in many charitableactivities, including UJW, WZL, and UJA, andaliyah did not mean a stop to her volunteere f f o r t s .

Shortly after her arrival, she organized some ofher friends to knit for underprivileged childrenin the township of Shlomi. When the YomKipper war came along, she inspired her friendsto keep the soldiers on duty at the bordersupplied with home-made cakes, and continuedbaking afterwards for soldiers stationed near

Nahariya. She has been a volunteer worker atNahariya hospital and a fund raiser for BeitRonit, a home for children in need of care, andfor a soldier's recuperative home. She helpedestablish the Conservative community in townand still supports the synagogue. She has taughtEnglish to children on a voluntary basis. One of her special interests is the WesternSettler's Assoc., a volunteer group of which sheis founder member, and has been president andsecretary-treasurer. Her "special" corner is theknitting circle, the members of which meetweekly and run a fete at Chanukah, and herphilosophy as she puts it is "It's no good justsitting around. Let's get cracking!".

By galvanizing the women to these efforts, shehas not only helped many women find a niche

within the social fabric of the town, but hasmade substantial contributions each year toSoldiers Welfare, the Israel Blind Assoc. andmany more. Her f r iends in South Afr ica areconstantly being cajoled into sending woo! forher knitting circle. No effort is too much for her.She plans to donate the prize money to Soldiers'welfare and the local "trampiada", and says theopportunity to do so is "absolutely wonderful".

Says her son, Jonathan Danilowitz, of Tel Aviv,"How fortunate Nahariya is to have inheritedBella from Krugersdorp. How fortunate I am tohave her as an example of parenthood."

And how fortunate we are to have her as thefirst winner of the Telfed volunteer award. □

Lending a Hand where it's Needed

For the prospective volunteer in search of acause, it might come as a surprise to learn thatIsrael has some 250 volunteer organizations. It's also surprising — and heartening — to learnthat 25% of the citizens of this country, fromchildren to pensioners, are involved in somevolunteer activity.

There's something for everyone to do, includingthe greenest newcomer straight from SouthAfrica, with barely a word of Hebrew.

Faced with a plethora of deserving causes, oneapproach for the prospective volunteer is tochoose a particular area of interest.

There are organizations which grow out of a

feeling of belonging, such as the variouswomens and men's groups, unions, THEC O U N C I L O F Y O U T H M O V E M E N T S I N

The Center for Volunteer Services can provideaddresses and phone number for all theseorganizations, and for many more toon u m e r o u s t o l i s t h e r e .

But it's not even necessary to join an organizedsociety to make a difference. A walk around thecorner to the local school will almost certainlyfind a delighted staff more than willing to matcha volunteer tutor with a child needing help.

There is no better way to help Israel than tofoster an involvement in the country's activitiesand problems, and volunteering is one of thebest ways of becoming involved. There is nolack of causes — the problem is simply makingt h e d e c i s i o n t o h e l p . □

Honouring Dot and Issy Isacowitz

Honouring the Isacowitz's (left to right): J. Kruger, J. Bortz. Issy Isacowitz. Dot isacowitz. Rabbi Newman,M. Bo rsuk and S . Shap i r o .

All South African olim who spent their firstmonths in Israel at Merkaz Klita Ben Yehuda in

Netanya over the past 13 years know Dot andksy Isacowitz. The Isacowitz's were the oneswho wrote welcoming letters, who were there onthat first bewildering morning in Israel withsunny greetings and home-made cake, and whokept on being available, through all the fearsa n d d i f fi c u l t i e s o f t h o s e fi r s t t r a u m a t i c m o n t h s .

They helped find jobs, settle children, and werealways an address to turn to and a shoulder tolean on. And they did it all cheerfully andunstintingly, on a volunteer basis.

Recently, all those who had been befriended byDot and Issy gathered to pay tribute to them, inturn. Some 250 people from from all over Israel,as well as members of their family from South

Africa and Australia, met at the Park Hotel inNatanya, where Jossie Bortz, one of theorganizers, acted as MC. Tributes were given byamong others, Rabbi Newman, Morris Borsuk,Chairman ofTelfed and Jeff Kruger, Chairmanof the Netanya region. The Isacowitz's werepresented with an inscribed book and ah a n d s o m e i l l u m i n a t e d a d d r e s s .

Said Dot, "We helped so people could see thatsomeone cared all the time. Whatever we could,we did, and we received far more than we gave."

Issy added, "We wanted to fulfill our Zionistfeeling and the love and friendship we got inre tu rn made i t more than wor thwh i le . I can

honesty say I bless the fact that we've been ableto spend the last 13 years of our life in Israel. Ifeel younger today than I did 13 years ago." □

Zionfed And Telfed Deliberate In SA

Left to right: Morris Borsuk. Chairman. Sidney Shapiro. Acting Director, Eddy Magid. Mayor ofJohannesburg. Herby Rosenberg. Executive Director of Zionfed, Nick A/hadeff. Treasurer of Telfed andLeon Charney, Vice-Chairman.

Although the relationship between the ZionistFederation in South Africa and Telfed in Israelis necessarily close, communicating over a longdistance can never substi tute for face-to-face

d i s c u s s i o n s .

Accordingly, a group of Israeli Telfed membersmet with their South African equivalents inMarch-April in Johannesburg; the first timeever that an Israeli delegation has been sent toSouth Africa. Morris Borsuk, Chairman of theSAZF, Leon Charney, Vice-Chairman, NickAlhadefT, Treasurer and Sidney Shapiro,Acting Director represented Telfed at the jointdeliberations and were joined by WalterRobinson in Johannesburg, a member of theexecutive. Also present were Treasurer of theJewish Agency, Akiva Levinsky, and IsraeliA m b a s s a d o r E l i a h u L a n k i n .

"This process of South African and Israelidelegations meeting jointly began two years ago

when we held the 'Shefayim Deliberations atKibbutz Shafayim", said Sidney Shapiro."Those two days of meetings in 1982 helped usrealize just how important it is to sit downtogether to discuss practical issues, but evenmore important to take a good in-depth look atthe current trends in aliyah. Similarly, ourmeetings in Johannesburg this year gave us theopportunity of assessing our performance in thepast and looking forward with proper planningfor the future" .

Present at the deliberations were members ofthe Johannesburg and Cape Town Federationexecutives. The Telfed delegation also had theopportunity to meet with and hear reports fromrepresentatives of Regional Zionist Councils.

Among the subjects under discussion were thequestion of the respective responsibilities of theS o u t h A f r i c a n a n d I s r a e l i o f fi c e s a n d t h ecomplement of the shlichim delegations in SA.Some of the highlights of the joint discussions

Finances always play an integralpart in any deliberations, and these were noexception. Budgets for Telfed's operations andloan budgets to assist new olim and veteranswere set. It was also resolved to continueenthusiastically the work begun 20 years ago bythe late Judge Herbstein to establish trust fundsfor bursaries and scholarships.

A review of aliyah in general showed a slightincrease in interest but it is realized that youngadults are the main source for olim today.Programmes, courses and facilities in Israel forthis group are a major focus of Telfed.The visit to SA by the Telfed representativesincluded a reception given by the Mayor ofJohannesburg, Mr. Eddie Magid and a windingup session including the participation of Mr. E.Lank in , t he I s rae l i Ambassado r and Mr. A .Levinsky, Treasurer of the Jewish Agency whow a s a l s o p r e s e n t d u r i n g m o s t o f t h ed e l i b e r a t i o n s .

Visiting Maimouna by Rima Charney

It was Tuesday, the 24 of April in the town ofOfakim, not far from Be'er Sheva, and 16 busescarrying roughly 1000 men, women andchildren drove through the town and drew up atlast next to a large park on the edge of town, apark consisting of a grassy field and a grove ofevenly-planted trees on the edge of the desert.

There was music and laughter and joy in the

park, which was filled with the bright tents, fabrics, colour and costumes of the Moroccanimmigrants and their descendents who make upa significant population in the town. They werecelebrating the yearly festival of Maimouna—afeast-day dedicated to Maimonides and thespirit of happiness. Joy and brotherhood.

And it was in this spirit of sharing that the 1000people on the buses were ex-South Africans, living in every nook and cranny of the country, who had been invited by the residents of Ofakimto celebrate their holiday with them.

The large response of the South Africans inIsrael indicates the great interest shown inProject Renewal and South Africa'sinvolvement, and it proves too that formerSouth Africans want to meet and get to knowothe r I s rae l i s .

Greetings were brought to Ofakim from the

South African community in Israel by Mr.Sidney Shapiro, Acting Director of Telfed. At noon the festivities began — with tablesful oforiental treats, meat and sweets alike, couscous, chicken and wine. There was a band playing anda little girl was onstage doing a fair imitation ofa belly-dance, grinning through white teeth allthe while. And there were the tents, some store-

bought, some homemade, some spread withbeautiful woven carpets and tapestries. Andinside or around each tent gathered one ofOfakim's families, preparing fires on which theyroasted steaks and shishlik and kebabs, and

passed to any guest who wandered close enoughby.

everybody wanted their family group to befilmed — dancing or eating from the tables thatgroaned with food, or simply grinning andenjoying one another's company. There wereproblems and some complaints, but on thewhole enormous praise was due to the Ofakimcommunity, to Mayor Ben Tov and ProjectManager Yitzhak Yonatan. Altouht they hadonly expected four hundred guests, thecommunity found food and friendship for thewhole 1000 — in the spirit of the Maimouna ando f b r o t h e r h o o d . o

Once, the road joining three development townsin the Negev established in 1955 was nicknamed"Road of Hunger". That is a fair indication ofthe problems facing these towns; problemswhich to some extent they still face today. The largest of these towns was called Ofakim(Horizons), and was settled mainly byimmigrants from Morocco, with today, a fairinflux of Russians. Ofakim has an estimatedpopulation of 14,000, with 50% of the familieshaving four or more children. A frighteninglyhigh percentage of 73% of their elementaryschool children are classified as "teunehtipuah" (requiring special attention), ascompared to under 30% for the rest of Israel. When the Jewish Agency Department ofProject Renewal approached the South AfricanIsrael United Appeal two years ago to adoptOfakim as a second twinning project, theypointed out that Ofakim is a classic example of acommunity with the capacity for improvement. The population is more or less homogeneous, their citizens could be motivated to becomeactively involved in Project Renewal, and greatpotential exists for successful physical andsocial planning. The Ofakim project hasbecome a joint venture of the lUA and the

Among the projects undertaken by SouthAfricans in Ofakim are the renovation andequipment of three pre-kindergartens, theintroduction of the Toam computer system forthe use of elementary school children, theintroduction of the Commodore ComputerSystem in the Comprehensive Religious HighSchool, and the renovation of various clubs, cultural centres and synagogues, including theArt Centre and Music Conservatory. A future dream is theestablishment of a Sports Centre, with aswimming pool and tennis courts.

Last year, the Rashbi Synagogue was opened inOfakim, with the participation of a delegationof South African leaders. As the Sifrei Torahwere placed in the new Aron Kodesh, on thismoving occasion, Jews from Morocco in aNegev town and Jews from South Africa foundthemselves united in prayer, each with onedestiny and homeland. G o l d e n S e t t l e r s J u b i l e eWhat are the feelings of South Africans whohave been in Israel for 50 years? Has it all beenworthwhile? Do they sometimes envy theircontemporaries who have lived easier, morecomfortable l ives in South Africa?

To find out. and to honour a group of 50 yearveterans from the north, Haifa region under theorganization of Irma Zaslansky recently held anemotional, inspir ing, and often hi lar iousevening listening to the reminiscences of SollyFriedman, Maxie Kahan, Michael Kaplan,Milly Levy, Lenny Rabinowitz, Arieh Sive,Kalman Keet, and Louis Shapiro, all of whomhave spent a half century in Israel. Otherveterans from the area who were unable to be

present for the occasion included Bob Damelinand Harry Salber.

Listening to some of the life experiences of thisgroup makes the minor irritations of today'solim fade into insignificance. Malaria, war, impossible living conditions — all these werepart of their lives. To give just a few examples ofwhat they went through, Bob Damelin drainedswamps in Zichron Yaakov, and MichaelKaplan, as an Etzel member, was held prisonerf o r a m o n t h i n 1 9 4 8 . Tw o f a m i l i e s — t h eKahans and the Shapiros — paid the terribleprice of sacrificing a son during one of Israel'swars. Yet they all survived these trials to makeexamplary contributions to Israel and to reflectcredit on South African olim. As Haifa mayorArieh Gurel put it, "In my experience, SouthAfrican olim put other people beforethemselves". In spite of these serious notes, thedominant mood of the evening was humorousand warm, thanks in part to Philip Gillon, whoa c t e d a s M . C .

Among the stories that convulsed the audiencewas one told about Louis Shapiro, who at one

point in his career was charged with escorting aJewish prisoner to the lock-up. On the way,Louis felt thirsty and asked the prisoner to waitwhile he crossed the street to buy himself adrink. Sure enough, when he returned, theprisoner was nowhere in sight. After fruitlesslysearching for an hour, he returned to the policestation with a heavy heart, wondering how onearth he was going tg explain the loss of hisprisoner. And there, waiting for him, was theculprit. "N.u?", he said in Yiddish. "Where wereyou? I couldn't find you, so I came by myself'.

All the veterans were asked whether theyregretted coming to Israel, and in every case, theanswer was "Of course not".

Said Lenny Rabinowitz, "At one point, I wentback to South Africa to be called to the Bar, andone of my classmates gave me a book with theinscription To lucky Lenny, going home'. Thatsums it all up".

Solly Friedman remarked, "From the moment Icame in 1935, I never looked back. As a Jew Ican't possibly live anywhere else. I have foundsatisfaction in my work as a lawyer with 'illegal'immigrants that I never could have foundelsewhere, and complete fulfillment in life''.

Louis Shapiro: "To me, aliyah seemed the onlysuccessful conclusion to our work in the Zionistmovement in South Africa. My whole life hasbeen varied and looking back I feel deepsatisfartion, despite the price we paid losing ours o n .

A surprise highlight of the evening was thejoyful reunion of Norah Miller, former teacherof two of the group in South Africa, with herpupils. Norah, who came over on the same boatas they did, now lives on Kibbutz Yifat.

When it was all over, the mood remainednostalgic, but hopeful. The values and idealismthat these veterans exemplify still spoke to the

newer arrivals in the audience and clearly theyfelt that Israel still offers a challenge and thechance for a hard but full life. As Maxie put it,"There is no limit to what you can do here". □

Fifteen years ago as a vivacious teenager, shewas chosen South Africa's representative in the"Miss Teenage. Personality" competition.

These days, artist Marlene Ferrer is stillvivacious, but any other resemblance betweenherself and that long-ago personality is veryfaint. Today, her life style revolves around theGaiil Moshav Manof, and is anything butglamourous.

M.irlene credits Manof w-ith the style in paintingthat she has developed since she and her familyc a m e t o I s r a e l i n 1 9 7 8 .

"I absorb the feeling of living at Manof, and Iuse it in my paintings. Manof is like an island inthe sky. Everything feels so far away and thee n o r m o u s v i s t a i s a s o u r c e o f c o n s t a n t

inspiration as it changes with the atmosphericcondition", she says.Marlene, who is holding her first one-manexhibition at the Elizabeth Gallery in Raanana(owned by former South African Elizabeth

Schne ider -Cooper) , g raduated f rom theUniversity of the Witwatersrand in Fine Artsand then studied sculpture in Cape Town. In1974 she moved to London where she studied

cartography and began to experiment withpainting on fabric.

She and her husband Larry (who helps run thecubic zirconia factory) were among the pioneersettlers at Manof and spent two years at Carmielbefore moving to the moshav.

"Today, what I fee l about Is rae l i s d i f fe ren tfrom what I felt when I came. My father isIsraeli, and I came to fulfil my Jewishness andfind roots. I think what keeps me here now is thevitality and tension of Israel. There's a sense oflife that 1 can identify with".

" S o m e p e o p l e m i g h t fi n d a n i s o l a t e dcommunity stultifying, but not me. About oncea month I head for the city, and meet lots ofpeople, visit the galleries, get around. But then Ihave to gel back to Manof. There I am beyondcurrent influences and I can generate somethingin myself.

Although Marlene worked with silkscreensbefore coming to Israel, she has found thatpaint is a better medium for her now. "It's morepersonal — it's better for landscapes anddistances". She has developed her ownindividual technique of working with "sacciotnylon" — plastic bags — and her bare fingers toapply household enamel in layer upon layer."I'm taking this technique now into threedimensional forms. My work is headingtowards sculpture now".

Marlene looks surprised when I ask her if shesees Manof as a permanent home. "Of course.I've been on a self-search for a long time, and Ithink that here I've found the space to developmyself, as a woman and in a spiritual way. Idon't know if I could have found that anywheree l s e " . □

B E I T P R O T E AFOUNDED BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN ZIONIST FEDERATION (ISRAEL)

June , 1984

Dear Israeli (of S. African Origin),

The apparent silence on the "Beit Protea" front does not mean that nothing ishappening. We have had an outstanding response to our questionnaire which has more thanconfirmed our need for such a project. From the answers to the multiplicity ofquestions our experts at Tel Hashomer are evaluating the attitudes and requirements ofthose who responded. It is estimated that some 56% of the over-65 age group of S.A f r i cans i n I s rae l r ep l i ed .

There are two keys to the whole project - Land and Funds. Without a plot of groundwe cannot present an actual scheme which will attract the contributors for the substantialfund ing we need. Yet , Wi thout funds, is land ava i lab le?

The Management Committee has been engaged in a ceaseless pursuit for a suitable plot. After many months it has found one, whose attributes meet every parameter of the IdealSituation for a Retirement House Project. Negotiations are proceeding and, if successful, we will have sought and found the answer to "which came first - the chicken or theegg?"; although in our case it is "the land or the money".

A medical subcoimnittee has been examining the medical and social needs and ourManagement Corrmittee has also been acting as a building subcoirmittee. We are now atthe stage where we virtually know what we want to build.

The capital cost of the project will have to be raised from donors in South Africaand Israel for whom we believe Beit Protea will have a profound appeal. However, it •must be run as an economically viable proposition, while maintaining a high standardin the services provided.

This is a scheme of great social significance in Israel. Sociologists recommendthat older people should live in a compatible group, based on country of origin. TheDutch, American, Central European and English have preceded us in providing for theirGIL ZAHAV. To bring this project to a successful conclusion- is the challenge facingformer S. Africans in Israel and the Jewish Community in South Africa. Your interestand support is required. To every one of us, this is a personally meaningful project.
