Volunteerism is central to the founding and legacy of the Y. The YMCA was founded on a simple but powerful idea: by bringing neighbors together to advance the common good, we can improve lives and strengthen communities. Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Y. From coaching youth sports to raising funds for our annual campaigns to leading our boards, volunteers are essential to elevating our mission, our cause and our voice. Thank you to our volunteers for giving back and advancing our cause of strengthening communities.

Ser voluntario es fundamental para la fundación y el legado de el Y. CONNECTING OUR COMMUNITY Working with our partners to give back.CITY OF ANAHEIM

Public/private partnerships make our community stronger. The City of Anaheim’s collaboration with the Anaheim Family YMCA has positively impacted our community in many ways.

• In 1999, the City of Anaheim was a founding partner with the YMCA and Anaheim Elementary to launch the Anaheim Achieves Afterschool program. With their continued support, this program has grown to serve over 6,500 students each day. • The City of Anaheim has also partnered with the YMCA to provide program space to serve thousands of youth, including the West Anaheim Youth Center and the Anaheim Downtown Youth Center. • The City's partnership to help the YMCA provide swim lessons and public swim at Pearson Park has also made our community safer and stronger. • When we launched our Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) program in 2012, the City of Anaheim was also there as an active partner. This led to a 2013 resolution designating the City of Anaheim as a HEAL City. • As the YMCA prepares to build a new facility and community complex, the City of Anaheim has generously provided the land adjacent to Ross Park for one dollar per year.

For these reasons and more, the Anaheim Family YMCA applauds the City of Anaheim! Thank you for your partnership and for demonstrating the power of working together.

The goal of Imagine Science is to bring STEM programming to community-based sites across the nation at times and places where options are typically limited. SUN SAFETY TIPS CONSEJOS DE SEGURIDAD DEL SOL

It’s a bright, sunny day, and you and your family are outdoors enjoying the fine weather. But that fine weather can turn out to be not so fine if your family doesn’t know the precautions to take to avoid sunburn and heat-related illnesses.

SUN PROTECTION PROTECCION SOLAREveryone likes to be out in the sun, but prolonged, repeated exposure to sunlight can lead to sunburn or, over time, to skin cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that 500,000 Americans develop preventable and curable skin cancer each year.

• Avoid being out in the sun in the middle of the day, when ultraviolet (UV) rays are strongest. • Wear a suitable sunscreen. The American Cancer Society recommends a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Use a higher protection level for sensitive areas like the face and the tops of the feet. • As no sunscreen is water resistant, be sure to reapply sunscreen after swimming. • Wear a hat with a brim or a visor. • Wear sunglasses with a good UV rating to reduce glare and exposure to ultraviolet light. • Wear a shirt if you’re out in the sun for a long time.

TEEN VOICEI have gone to school for a solid 10-11 years if you consider kindergarten a grade level. A part from having a personal life and social life at school, my favorite time of the school day would be coming to Anaheim Achieves because it gives me a more relaxing and productive state of mind. I attended the Anaheim Achieves after school program for about 6 years. There were so many things that I wouldn't open my mind to were what I called “doors of opportunity” because it built my self esteem and gave me more of a positive personality. I have been in so many extra-curricular activities in school but I've never thought that I would do other great things AFTER school! I’ve seen now that it’s even better if you can just come out little by little from your shell to see for yourself.

I am currently going to the program and so far I'm feeling the same positive vibes. Before knowing of Anaheim Achieves, I would usually have the athletic mood of joining as much sports I can adjust to. It wasn’t much for me, so I heard of the program from a close friend and my very first day was pretty good. We had pasta for our 5:00 snack time in the elementary program. I enjoyed eating the pasta because of the flavor and this would occur everyday. Although, there were other things to do but eat, I played sports as well. For example, the time I would wait for snack time, I’d either play soccer or volleyball. Volleyball was one of my favorites because even though we

didn’t have a net, I’d circle everyone and start playing joyful games that would benefit from playing the actual sport. Not only was I quite the athlete, I did other cool things like being part of a film in the Anaheim Achieves Film Festival. Not to brag too much, but I was born a star because I got to be THE main character in the classic short tale of the Empress’ New Clothes. It was a great idea for me to try new things (Alright I’m done with the bragging!). For future reference, I’d want to actually volunteer as a staff for the program, I mean I am pretty close to graduating from high school and volunteering at Anaheim Achieves seems like the right way to go. Generally, the bond I have with the after school staff are the best. From fifth grade til my current sophomore year, I’ve gotten along well with them. Joining Anaheim Achieves has been a worthwhile experience. I don’t think that any other program would help me seek more opportunities.
