NEW AT THE OFFICE

We understand that construction projects impact businesses near the by. We

are committed to working with you to help minimize any negative impacts. One of the ways we can help is by providing you with information about the projects so you know what to expect during construction.

No one knows your business and your customers better than you do. Some of these tips may work for you; others may spark an idea you can use. Hopefully these tips will help combat the negative impact of construction on your business.

Tell Your Customers: • When your customers call, tell them about the

construction and let them know your business will still be open and accessible.

• Tell customers about alternative routes they can use to get to your business.

• If you send your customers newsletters or emails, include information about what to expect during construction and how to get to your business.

• If you do your own advertising, you may want to include messages that say “Open during construction.”

• If the timing is right, we recommend you do a special promotion to help keep customers coming while construction is under way.

• Get together with other businesses in the construction area to brainstorm advertising, promotions, or special events you can do as a group to help your advertising dollar go a little further and keep customers coming during construction.

• Form mutually beneficial referral partnerships with other nearby businesses that have products and services that are complementary to yours.

• Businesses with more flexibility may want to consider adjusting hours or staffing to capture business outside peak commute hours when construction delays may be longer.

Tell Your Staff • Let them know about the construction

and which routes to use so they can get to work on time.

• Talk to your staff about your business strategy during construction so their efforts can support your success.

Potholes to Orange Cones

It’s nearing the time of year when Michigan’s state flower turns to orange cones & barrels.

I know that construction season can be annoying as blocked drives and detours interrupt our routines. So, instead of getting frustrated and letting our blood pressure rise, I’m pledging to focus on the benefits of an altered routine.

Scientific studies have proven that switching patterns and routines leads to increased energy, productivity, creativity and happiness. Besides, which is worse…deteriorating roads and expensive car repairs or a Michigan Summer full of orange barrels and cones? I have a feeling that our human nature will have us bemoaning both equally so instead, let’s look for the positive and focus on the new adventures a season of orange barrels may provide.

When I’m confronted with a longer commute or delayed by construction, I pledge to take a deep breath, open my eyes, and see what’s happening around me, envisioning how great it will all look when it’s done. It is exciting to discover what new businesses have opened or moved and I’m looking forward to maybe finding a new route to work or the gym.

I challenge you do the same. Wave

at me as we’re stopped in traffic…just don’t pick your nose or I may not shake

your hand next time I see you.

DOWNTOWN IMPROVEMENT

Lofts on Louis Project:This image looking toward the Southwest shows the Lofts on Louis project, currently under construction. Lofts on Louis is a 30-unit mixed use project featuring market rate apartments on the upper floors and commercial space on the first floor. To the right of the Lofts on Louis project in the image is a depiction of the potential new headquarters for Commonwealth Associates. To the left of the Lofts on Louis in the image is an artist’s rendering of a potential mixed use development.

Multi-story Mixed use Building:This image, looking toward the Northwest, depicts a multi-story mixed use building fronting Jackson Street. The building in this rendering would house market rate apartments on the upper floors and multiple commercial spaces at street level. This project would also provide parking for the building’s tenants behind the structure or possibly in an underground parking garage. A mixed-use project of this nature combined with the Lofts on Louis project would bring a renewed vitality and active street life to downtown.

DOWNTOWN IMPROVEMENT

Commonwealth Association Headquarters:This image, looking toward the Southeast, depicts the potential Commonwealth Associates headquarters at full build-out. At the left of the image a pedestrian bridge is shown that would facilitate easier pedestrian access from additional parking across Louis Glick Highway. Due diligence for the headquarters project is currently underway but initial estimates indicate the building could range from 40,000 to 80,000 square feet. A green light for this project construction could begin in 2018.

This image, looking toward the Southwest, depicts a full build-out of the potential Commonwealth Associates corporate headquarters from a proposed parking lot north of Louis Glick Highway. A pedestrian bridge links the parking lot and headquarters building providing easier access across heavily-traveled Louis Glick Highway for workers. In this image, Louis Glick Highway is depicted with two-way traffic, which will become a reality later this year.

• Share details about the project with them and encourage them to let your customers know, too.

Focus on the Positive: • It’s especially important to let people know

that during construction projects, Jackson is still a great place to do business.

• When construction calls for temporary detours, reassure your customers that they can still get to your business, and provide clear and concise directions so they’ll be less likely to go to your competitor who is outside the construction area.

• When that potential new customer calls to ask how to find you, your encouragement and reassurance that they can still get to you during construction can help you not only get them in your business for the first time, but can earn you a repeat customer.

• Focus on what you CAN do to help your business get through the construction season rather than the negative impacts.

• Let customers know how much you appreciate the extra effort it took for them to get to you during construction.

NEW AT THE OFFICE

My name is Jessica, and I am a Jackson native. Raised in Jackson, where my family and I currently reside, we’re

proud to call it home. I am currently working on attaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Spring Arbor University.

Working in the financial industry over the past fourteen years assisted me in establishing many community partnerships. These partnerships became relationships which led to working with local events and non-profits. The volunteer work I have done for various non-profits has helped me realize my passion is my hometown, my community.

In February, I started a new adventure with Experience Jackson as the Director of Community Engagement. My job will consist of working with YOU, the community, to instate fun, positive, engaging activities such as Jackson Certified and Welcoming Community, to showcase Jackson pride. By inviting me to your next staff meeting, you can learn fun, informative, historical information about Jackson, and YOU and your team can become Jackson Certified! Together we can establish pride and increase awareness of all the wonderful assets Jackson has to offer.

Jackson offers hidden gems and escapes which create memories and stories. I invite you to share your story. Share why you live, work, and play in Jackson. What is your favorite venue? What is it that you love about Jackson? Share your story at welcometojacksonmi.com or use #JacksonMI on social media. So many community members have shared their stories, we want to hear YOUR story!

I look forward to working with the community and highlighting all the specialties Jackson offers, not only to the locals, but to people from other communities. It’s a pleasure to live and work in the Jackson community and I look forward to working with you!

NEW AT THE OFFICE

My name is Patrick O’Dowd, and I am the new Business Development Manager for the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. I was born and raised here in Jackson and am proud to be

raising my children here as well. I have two children, Annie is 7 and Jack is 5, along with 3 step-children, Seraiah is 18, Caleb is 16, and Landon is 6. My wife Tierney and I are rapidly approaching our first anniversary. As a first-time husband, I’ve learned a lot this year and would like to believe I’m nearing the successful completion of my spousal training.

Jackson truly is a wonderful place to raise a family. Our community is blessed with strong schools, numerous parks, lakes, golf courses, and countless community festivals. I feel very fortunate to be a part of the team here at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and to play a role in fulfilling our mission to be “a leading driver and advocate for community and economic development in Jackson County.”

Having been trained in sales locally by two of Jackson’s finest, John Campau at Comtronics, and Rich Walicki at Jim Winter Automotive, I look forward to the challenge of growing our membership and successfully matching promotional opportunities and sponsorships to best benefit our members.
