Executive Board Meeting Monday, April 3, 2017 – 7:00 PM
TAKE NOTE:
THIS IS A CHANGE OF DATE
BEAVERDAM MISSION CENTER 215 N TOWNVILLE ST, SENECA
The Executive Board conducts the business of
the association in the time between the annual
meetings. It is important for every church to
have a voice in decisions that are made.
The pastor plus two members of each of our
churches make up the Executive Board, along
with associational officers and leaders. Please
make plans now to attend.
Please join the Ministers Prayer Time at 9:00 AM every Monday at the
Beaverdam Mission Center!
DOM Thoughts,
As I write this month’s article in all honesty my heart is
torn. My intention was to utilize this space to share
with you about how on Monday, April 17th my
daughter, Denise, and I will load up her Toyota
Highlander and with a U-Haul in tow begin the 2500
mile trek to Calgary, Alberta, Canada where she will
begin serving as a NAMB missionary. I would love to
share details with you about some amazing “God
Moments” that Denise has experienced as she has been
sharing her missions story in churches all across our
Association. I personally would like to express our
family’s deepest appreciation to the Pastors/Churches
that allowed Denise to come and share about her “Call
to Canada”. Kathy and I do ask each of our churches to
please continue praying for our daughter as she begins
this brand new chapter in her life this month.
My heart is torn because as Director of Missions, I hear
each week about many of the challenges our churches
are facing. I hear far too often about churches being
divided and conflict looming. There was a time in
Baptist life (1980’s – Early 90’s) when the primary
source of church conflict was over theological
differences. It was in the fall of 1990 that the Southern
Baptist Convention experienced a split primarily over
theological differences and the Cooperative Baptist
Fellowship emerged. Today we’re told that the primary
issue causing the majority of problems in OUR
churches today has to do with CONTROL!
While I am limited by space to fully dive into this
issue, I do want to share three thoughts.
1. There is no need for churches to fight over control
of the church because that issue was settled a long
time ago when Paul in Colossians 1:18 told us that
Christ is the Head of the body, the church. We
need to quit fighting and bickering over something
that we will never possess!
2. Secondly, we need to understand that the CHURCH
was God’s idea – it wasn’t our idea! In Matthew
16:18 Jesus told Peter that “I will build my
church…” We need to understand that the church
belongs to Christ! It’s HIS – it’s not mine, it’s not
Ma Ma’s and it’s not Paw Paw’s! The church
belongs to Christ! Period! Issue settled! It’s HIS
church! The only thing that matters is HIM being
pleased – not us!
3. Jesus also told Peter in that same passage that “the
gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” I was
asked one time if the gates of hell won’t ever
prevail against the church why do we hear about so
many churches declining and sadly even closing.
My response was that Jesus said the gates of hell
would not prevail against HIS church – they
WILL prevail against OUR church! The sad
reality is that today we’ve turned far too many of
OUR churches into holy Burger Kings where we
can “have it our way” rather than making sure we
do it God’s way! We’ve made church about US
and not about HIM!
I close where I began, my heart is torn. I rejoice that the
same God who spoke the world into existence has
called our daughter to serve Him as a Missionary in
Calgary, Alberta, Canada! But while I rejoice in that,
my heart is deeply saddened over the state of the
church! May those of us who make up the church come
to an understanding that church was God’s idea, it’s
HIS church and He is the Head of the church. Let’s
commit ourselves to doing everything in our power to
be about fulfilling the three purposes of the church:
Glorifying God, Making Disciples and Being a
Blessing to Our Communities.
Redeeming the Time,
David
