Kendra Sahitya Academy Awards for Shri. Sashi Tharoor & Prof. Madhusoodanan Nair

Year 2019 was good for Malayali’s who love literature and adore writers, as famous Mala-yalam poet Akitham got the 2019 Jnanpith award and is now followed by two Malayali writers namely Shri Sashi Tharoor & Prof. Madhusoodanan Nair getting the Kendra Sahitya Academy Award. In a way, it is a great privilege for Keralites in Dallas as well as me, as both Dr.Sashi Tharoor and Prof. Madhusoodanan Nair have visited Dallas, and were fortunate to have met them and talked to them.

Dr. Sashi Tharoor is an author, poli�cian and a former interna�onal diplomat who is the cur-

rent member of parliament, Lok Sabha from Trivandrum in Kerala. He received the Kendra Sahit-

ya Academy award for the year 2019 for his book “An Era of

Darkness” in a non-fic�on category in English Language. Shri

Sashi Tharoor graduated from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi in

1975 and got his doctorate in Interna�onal Rela�ons and

Affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tu3s

University. Shri Sashi Tharoor has authored 18 best selling

works of Fic�on and non-fic�on including “The Great Indian

Novel” which he wrote in the year 1989. He has also au-

thored hundreds of columns ar�cles in interna�onal publica-

�ons such as New York �mes, The Washington Post, Time

and News week. He also has wrote columns in The Asian Age, Deccan Chronicle, The Indian Ex-

press, The Hindu and the Times of India.

Prof. Madhusoodanan Nair is an eminent Malayalam poet, who is credited with contribu�ons

in popularizing poetry through recita�on. Prof. Madhusoodanan Nair published his first poem in

the 1980’s. His first poem anthology, Naranathu

Bhranthan was published in 1992. He has published

five non-fic�on books including Eliotum Richardsum,

a cri�cal study, Science Nikhantu, a lexicon and

NadodiVignanam, a book on the folklore of Kerala.

He has wri@en the lyrics for three Malayalam films

namely Santhanagopalam, Kulam and Ardhanaari

while his poems have been used in films such as Dai-

vathinte Vikrithikal, Punyam, Punarjani and VeeBle-

kulla Vazhi. He also wrote lyrics for Tharangini and

Manorama Music. Prof. Madhusoodanan Nair re-

ceived the Kunju Pillai Award for Poetry in 1986, followed by the K. Balakrishnan Award in 1990.

His anthology, Naranathu Bhranthan was selected by Kerala Sahithya Academi for their annual

award for poetry in 1993. In the year 2003, he was awarded Asan Smaraka Kavitha Puraskaram.

In the same year he also received R.G. Mangalom Award and Souparneekathiram Prathibhapu-

raskaram. This year he received the Kendra Sahithya Academi award for his poem “Achan Piran-

na Veedu”.

“Christmas & New Year 2020” - Celebrations

Kerala Associa�on of Dallas successfully organized the eagerly awaited “Christmas & New Year” Cele-

bra�ons on 4th January 2020 at the St. Thomas Catholic Church Parish Hall in Garland. Like any other event

organized by Kerala Associa�on of Dallas, this one also started on �me with the master of Ceremonies Deepthi

Roy & Vinny taking control of the event. The event started with the American Na�onal Anthem by Saniya

Francis followed by Indian Na�onal Anthem by the students of “Kerala Associa�on of Dallas - Malayalam Class

program”. Welcome speech was given by our President Roy Koduvath, where he gave the welcome message

welcoming one and all for par�cipa�ng in this event. Then it was the turn of our guest speaker Mr. Prince

Zacharia (CPA) to deliver his speech. His speech was well accepted by the crowd with applause.

This was followed by a music drama with Na�vity Scene called “Silent Night” organized by Kerala Associa-

�on of Dallas in associa�on with Bharath Kala Theatres of Dallas. Then there was a Dance performance by the

dance team from “Infused, Dallas”. As part of the Christmas celebra�ons, Carol Songs were sung by a group of

singers led by Stanley.

As in every year, awards were distributed to the winners of Maths, Spelling Bee compe��on conducted by

Kerala Associa�on of Dallas. This was followed

by an awe inspiring dance performance by the

team from the “Rhythm of Dallas” dance

school. Arts compe��on winners were then rec-

ognized and awards distributed.

Then it was the turn of our Elec�on officer

Shri Thomas Vadekkemuriyil, to introduce the

new Board of Directors and the new trustee

members to the members of Kerala Associa�on

of Dallas. This was followed by the

“Vote of Thanks” given by Shri Daniel

Kunnil our secretary where he used

the opportunity to thank all the spon-

sors alonfg with all the par�cipants

who made this event a grand success.

Addi�onally he also thanked those

members of Kerala associa�on who

put great efforts to make this event a

grand success. This was followed by

a sumptuous dinner.
