Newsletter Volume XXXI No. 3 September 2015 www.glendalequiltguild.org
Wednesday, September 9, 2015 6:45 PM
Join us on Wednesday, September 9th for Susan Else’s program “Off the Wall: Quilting in
Three Dimensions”
Susan resides in Santa Cruz. She earned a degree in literature and American studies at UC Santa Cruz's Cowell College, then worked as an editor and proofreader for UCSC
Publications. After training in art history, she was a museum registrar in Monterey for four years but continued working with textiles as a hobby, weaving and quilting.
Susan treats cloth not as a flat surface but as a wild flexible skin for three-dimensional
objects. Her work has developed in tandem with the art quilt movement, and she is probably one of the few artists making figurative sculpture in this medium. She has been
recognized by many organizations and most recently won the “Best in Show” at the
Carnegie Center for Art and History in New York. Her work often incorporates sound, light, and motors and each piece tells a story. Her current work often incorporates sound, light,
and motors. She uses cloth to create an alternate universe, and the resulting work is full of contradictions: it is whimsical, edgy, mundane, surreal, and engaging, all at once. Each
piece tells a story, but the narrative is always open to interpretation. The power and beauty of the patterned cloth surface play off the form and content of the work, and the result is a
dynamic seesaw of meanings and possibilities.
She was the featured artist at Road to California a few years ago. One of our guild members took her class at Road and highly recommends her as a superior teacher.
The workshop, 3D Adventures in the Garden, on September 12th, will be a part demo, part hands-on workshop. It is a one-day overview that introduces Susan's basic 3D techniques.
You will learn to make plant forms, including trees, leaves, vines, and flowers, which can be used to enhance flat quilts as well as in three-dimensional settings. We hope you will join
us for a fun day with your fellow quilters.
Susan Else,
Speaker for
the Sept 9th
meeting.

Hello, everyone! It’s September. Time for the weather to begin turning slightly cooler (finally!), kids to be back in school, vacations to be over and time for us to seriously focus on our winter quilting projects. I missed you all in August while I was in Seattle, spending time with my grandsons. Keeping track of two energetic boys kept me very busy! We visited the beach numerous times, went swimming and hiking, worked on craft projects and spent quality time together building Lego projects. Plus, I was able to spend time with my daughter, which is always a treat. All in all, it was a fun month for me.
Now that I’m back home, it’s time to plan the rest of my year. Each and every year, I plan to make homemade gifts for the holidays. You’ll note that I said “plan”. Unfortunately, my plan is often derailed by family, guild obligations, changes in deadlines and just “Life” in general. I then find myself rushing to finish these “gifts” in time and often, find myself working feverishly to finish up on Christmas Eve! This year, I am making a promise to myself to be more realistic in my plans. I will allow myself a schedule with a back-up plan, in case I cannot finish everything on time. Friends and family will appreciate home-baked goodies or smaller homemade items just as much on special days. Perhaps this way, my special quilts will be finished properly, rather than cutting corners in order to be done quickly. I can already imagine less stress and better results by planning ahead and sticking to a schedule. Now to implement this realistic plan in the coming months and get some quality quilting done. My fingers are crossed! This month is also the selection deadline for our exhibit for Road to California in January 2016. At the general meeting, I will present the pictures of the quilts already selected for our GQG lobby exhibit. But, we are still short a few quilts to meet the total of 35! After reviewing all the submissions we have received, it will be time to determine what else we need to complete an awesome display. Remember, Road requires quilts to be a minimum of 72” long and no more than 100” wide, in order to be seen well in the atrium. Once the final quilt selection has been made, I will collect all the jpeg files and our final exhibit list must be submitted to Road with pictures by the end of the month. I’m really looking forward to seeing all our beautiful quilts hanging in the lobby of the convention center! Another deadline for immediate attention is membership renewals. We need to prepare the final annual roster for distribution very soon, so if you have not renewed as yet, please do so no later than the September guild meeting. Renewal received later than this meeting, will not appear in this year’s roster. I would also like to request that all Honorary Life Members and Past Presidents contact Membership to confirm or update your information as active members of our Guild. This is the best way for us to maintain an accurate list of active and inactive members. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this massive project. I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting. Until then, keep on quilting! Sandy

The Autry, is once again sponsoring a Quilting Bee for Quilts of Valor in conjunction with their Civil War
exhibit. It is going to be held on October 25, 2015 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
The last one was very successful. Four quilt tops were completed: two in Civil War era fabrics and two in
patriotic fabrics. We had lots of room and plenty of tables. The lighting was good in most sections. I am
planning on bringing my portable table light for added wattage. Want more information, check out this link https://theautry.org/programs/quilts-of-valor-quilting-bee

LOVING HANDS As per usual, the wonderful & generous members of our guild came through for those in need. At our August meeting, a total of 32 tops were turned in as well as 23 completed quilts. For all that work, we have to thank:
Cindy Abrams Tina Curran Cathy McNassor
Mary Ann Andrews Doralee Dohnel Rasa Read
Peggy Barber Cathy Euler Alice Turner
Mary Bolas Melinda Helscher Nancy Turney
Joanne Brown Denise Koch Bev Underwood
Jane Crane Martha Lewis Nancy Wagner
And then on the following weekend, at the Loving Hands workshop on Saturday, August 15th, Joni Kellam and Craig Coleman taught those gathered how to make a quilt top using the Disappearing Nine Patch pattern. It was a fun and fast way to make a great looking quilt top. And the construction was made even faster because Joni and Colleen Shier pre-coordinated the quilt top pieces ahead of time, using orphaned blocks from Loving Hand’s fabric stash. It made for a highly productive day where a good time was certainly had by all

We had 63 members and one guest, Emma Castor, attend the
August meeting and potluck. It was a fun and informative
meeting as members shared various tools that they loved, hated, or hadn’t used yet. It was great to see attendees taking notes! It’s time to renew your membership. Thank you to all members who have renewed already. If you haven’t yet renewed, please remember to mail your membership renewals or bring them to the September meeting to ensure your information appears in
the printed roster. The renewal form now provides options to voluntarily contribute to the cost of printing the newsletter and to pay for your Opportunity Quilt tickets in advance. If you are a Past President, or a Life Member, please remember to submit a renewal form. This is your yearly opportunity to update your information with the Membership Chairs.
We look forward to seeing you at the September meeting!
