Material Needed:Painter’s TapeShower Curtain6 Frisbees

Activity DirectionsFor this game, get a shower curtain. Use painter’s tape to make a Tic Tac Toe grid. Have the children stand behind a line about 4-5 feet away from board. Then let each child test their aim by throwing all 6 Frisbees on the board. Whoever lands the most Frisbees on the board wins! For added fun, once a child finishes throwing, have them retrieve the Frisbees and return them to the line as quickly as possible. You can even time them and find out who is the fastest!

Ingredients:Directions:3 cups old-fashioned oats

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1-1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

2 eggs

2 cups fat-free milk

1 medium apple, chopped

1/3 cup raisins

1/3 cup chopped walnuts

Additional fat-free milk, optional

Activity DirectionsPrint or write out your scavenger hunt list items. You are most familiar with the natural items in your backyard’s/center’s play area. For older children, break them up into groups of two and give them a copy of the list. For younger children, they will simply accompany you as you search for the items and ask for their help. Try to only give younger children one item to look for at a time. Encourage younger children to look closely for the items as you give them hints.

APPLE-RAISIN BAKED OATMEAL RECIPE

1. Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, combine first six ingredients. Whisk eggs and milk; stir into dry ingredients until blended. Let stand 5 minutes. Stir in apple, raisins and walnuts.

2. Transfer to an 8-in.-square baking dish coated with cooking spray. Bake, uncovered, 35-40 minutes or until edges are lightly browned and a thermometer reads 160°. Serve with additional milk if desired. Yield: 6 servings.

Ingredients:1 large apple

1/2 lemon

2 Tbsp peanut, tree nut,

or seed butter

2 Tbsp granola

Directions:Use an apple corer or melon baller to remove the apple’s core. Cut half an inch off the top and bottom of the apple. Cut apple crosswise into four ½ inch thick slices. They will look like bagels with holes in the center. Rub the cut side of the lemon over both sides of the apple slices to keep them from browning. Spread peanut butter on two of the apple slices. Sprinkle granola over the peanut butter. Top the remaining apple slices.Makes two crispy apple-wiches.

GOING DOWN, IN TOWNLocal Events & Activities

As all our childcare providers know, monitoring reviews can be a surprise! Since you don’t always know when you will have your next monitoring review, being as prepared as possible is a great idea. Besides keeping track of your receipts and keeping meal counts and attendance up to date, one way to be prepared is to make sure there are several staff members in your facility who are trained on the CACFP. That way, someone at your facility will always be able to provide relevant materials to your field representative in the event that you are not there on the day your monitor stops by.

By training your staff on where to find meal count and attendance forms, receipts, and cook’s time sheets, you can shorten the length of your monitoring reviews and lessen the need for a follow-up visit. A great way to make sure your staff is trained on the food program? Bring them along with you to our upcoming Child Care and Development Conference on August 29th!

File receipts and required paperwork on a consistent basis.

Capture meal counts & attendance daily.

Create clearly written procedures for handling all aspects of your Food Program claim.

Assign dedicated staff members to carry out your procedures.

Always serve meals at the times you specified in your contract.

Ensure food prep staff is trained on proper portion sizes for each age group.

Any time there is a disallowance on a claim, ODBTN claims processors send Disallowance Letters to manual claimers and Office Error Reports to online claimers. Reviewing these notices will help you understand why certain meals were not credited. Make sure to pay attention to these letters so that you can correct any errors and maximize the reimbursement on your next claim!
