Mountain View’s student thespians will be putting on the play version of Elf on Thursday, December 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room for parents and friends. Thank you to the Elements Theater Company for continuing to offer theater experiences for our students in their after school program. As we head into the holiday season, I want to thank you for all that you do for your children and our school. Mountain View School is a very special place and I am very thankful to get to work with such wonderful students, families and staff. Happy Thanksgiving and holidays.

Sincerely,

Ned Schoenwetter Principal

For a month short on school days, Mountain View sure had a lot happening during the month of November! A huge thank you to all the families who made wishes come true on our school-wide CASA project and thank you to Devon Stewart and Kary O’Brien for working tirelessly to coordinate that effort. Thanks also goes to Michael Mongold for arranging a successful and much appreciated Deckers Brand Showcase fundraiser, to Mona Lehman and Jeannette Todd for chairing the wonderful and successful Chaucer's Book Fair, to Jeannette Todd for another monthly farmers’ market, to Jane Gray for planning a delicious and profitable Chipotle fundraiser night, to Alexa Avila and Denise Sommer for coordinating the beautiful spread of food and flowers for teacher appreciation in November, and to Lisa Vance and Charlotte Rao for bringing Safe Routes to School to Mountain View for discounted bike helmet sales.

The holiday shopping season is upon us! While you’re Amazon shopping, please double check that you’re using the PTA link to our Amazon Associates program. The link is on the school website under the PTA tab. Your PTA earns 4-8% on all purchases made through this link — share it with grandparents, friends, neighbors, etc. (We receive no information about what was purchased, there is no mark up on prices, and it will not impact the use of Amazon Prime.) So shop your little hearts out and thank you for the kickback to our school.

Speaking of PTA funds, all the amazing PTA-sponsored projects from previous years are being continued. In addition, this year the PTA budget included supplies for the new STEM lab. Our children are very excited about this opportunity to learn programming and from each other while working with Blue Bots, Sphero Robotic Balls, Parrot MiniDrone Rolling Spiders, and other gadgets. We are very fortunate to have Yesi Thomas spearheading this program and getting it off the ground so quickly and successfully.

Some PTA money also went toward buying single-use supplies for lunchtime engineering projects, where children are having lots of fun while learning about aerodynamics, solar energy, propellers, Newton's laws, Bernoulli's Principle, and much more. Since participants will take their projects home any donations would allow the PTA to reinvest in the program and buy materials for future activities. There is a box in the office where you may choose to make a contribution toward lunchtime engineering supplies.

The PTA has also purchased many new Chrome books. In combination with backing from the district, both the 6th and 5th grades will have a 1:1 ratio of Chrome books, and the 4th grade will be approaching this ratio. The iPads from the upper grades are being passed down to lower grades so they have an increase in available technology as well. Finally, the PTA has supported sending teachers to conferences put on by Google and focused on educational technology so they learn to use these devices in ways that expand and grow the way our children are learning.

Notes from the PTA President

Corner

We are also starting to think about next year’s PTA Board. The Nominating Committee will meet in January to start working on next year’s Board. If you think you might be interested, email me and I’ll be happy to talk to you about which jobs might be a good fit for you. If you don’t want to chair an event but still want to get involved, please get in touch and I can help connect you with school projects that you’d really enjoy working on.

The conference week After School Movie program was a success! These movies are one of the biggest fundraisers for our fifth grade as they save up for all the activities of their sixth grade year. Thanks to all the parents who supported this effort by sending their kids to the movies, and kudos to Sarah Anderson, Valerie Helzer, and fifth grade parents and students who volunteered their time to staff the after school movies. Thank you so much for providing entertainment for our students and much needed childcare as well.

Much appreciation also goes to the teachers for putting in the time and effort to implement both the new math program and the new report card aligned to common core. Fall conferences were the first time this report card format was used and the school district is interested in hearing what you liked and didn’t like about it. Please send feedback to District Advisory Council representative Melissa Renda ([email protected]) by Nov 29th so she can pass it on.

Here are some more dates for your calendar:

I’m very thankful to volunteer at Mountain View with such amazing teachers, staff, students, and families. I wish you happiness during the holidays and a very healthy New Year.

As of November 15th, a total of $54,000 has been donated by 106 of our generous families and 10 local Business Sponsors. A sincere THANK YOU to all who have supported your children and specialist education at Mountain View!

Currently, 42% of our Mountain View families have made a donation to the MAGIC Campaign. We are 57% of the way to our goal of $95,000, but we still need EVERYONE to participate in order to continue to offer the expanded level of instruction in Art, Computer Science, Library, Music, Physical Education, and Science.

Our Library Science Specialist, Mrs. Sylvia Kautz, joined us at the Chaucer’s Book Fair in November to share her knowledge of books with our children and to give them reading recommendations. Music Specialist, Mr. Scott Lillard, is organizing a music recital in December to give students who play a musical instrument an opportunity to perform for their family and friends. Mrs. Yesi Thomas continues to captivate and wow students with STEM-based projects in the lab and with classroom STEM lessons. Mountain View has an amazing group of Specialists — let’s keep them teaching our children! The first of two Tribute Reports will be published and distributed in December. In

order to be included in this first Tribute Report, your donation needs to be received

before Thanksgiving Break (by November 20). All donations made to MAGIC are entered into the monthly drawing for the VIP Parking space for the remainder of the school year. The Hulme family won this space in October and the Cotich

family won in November – will your family win VIP Parking in December?

If you have not already made your donation to MAGIC, please return your remittance envelope as soon as possible by mailing it to the school or dropping it off in the office. You can submit post-dated checks if that helps. You may also use a credit card to make a donation at: http://mtnview.goleta.k12.ca.us/support/online-donation. All donations are tax deductible and you will receive an acknowledgement letter that can be used for tax purposes.

THANK YOU to our generous Business Sponsors! Please remember to thank them when you visit these local businesses:

Mountain View MAGIC Specialist Program

$54,000

Let’s fill this beaker and reach our goal!

Specialist Sp tlight

Meet Our Amazing MAGIC Specialists

Laura Yee — Art Specialist Laura Yee (formally Hubbard), has been the Art Specialist at Mountain View for five years. All students receive art instruction from Mrs. Yee once every other week. When she is not at Mountain View, Mrs. Yee teaches art at Foothill school, where she has taught for 10 years. She loves teaching art to students at both schools!

Children in Mrs. Yee’s class can expect to have fun and to often get messy. They will explore many of the art education standards, try dozens of art mediums, and learn about famous artists and art history from around the world! Students will use clay, papier-mâché, many different paints and pastels, some metal tooling, fabric and sewing, 3-D projects, collage and every drawing medium you can think of!

Mrs. Yee grew up in Davis, California, but moved to Santa Barbara for college and palm tree dreams in 1998. She double majored in Art and Communication from UCSB and competed her Multi-Subject teaching credential from Antioch University. Mrs. Yee also studied Art and Art History in a summer course at Cambridge University, England. She chose to teach art because of her own background and because it’s such a fun subject!

Aside from teaching, Mrs. Yee owns Aurora Painted Faces, a children’s event company with seven employees. They face paint, draw henna tattoos and twist balloons at about 400 parties each year! In her free time, Mrs. Yee enjoys life on her little ranch house in Buellton with her husband Steven and their two little dogs Tito and Lulu.

Phil Landfried — Computer Science Specialist Phil Landfried is the Computer Science Specialist at Mountain View. All students in Grades 1-6 receive computer technology instruction and typing skills in the computer lab twice a week. Mr. Landfried also visits the kindergarten classrooms twice a week to help students with computer technology.

Mr. Landfried was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received a BA in Journalism and a MA in Communications from Ohio State University. He started teaching in 1968 at a high school in the cornfields of Ohio, and worked as a carpenter while finishing his masters. Mr. Landfried moved to California with his wife, Ilze, when he took at position at the Community School in the Casa de la Raza. He moved to Santa Barbara in 1971, and began teaching at the Montessori Center School. He taught at the Montessori Center School for over 40 years before coming to Mountain View as our Computer Science Specialist. He has been teaching at Mountain View for 10 years.

Besides his two masters degrees, Mr. Landfried took accounting classes and passed the CPA test. He has also taken many computer classes at SBCC and is a Certified Microsoft Systems Engineer. He loves teaching — especially teaching technology — and enjoys giving presentations at conferences. Recently he presented at the annual Computer Using Educators (CUE) and Rock Star conferences. Over the summer, Mr. Landfried attended a Google Tech conference and a Code.org workshop. He also presented workshops on math websites and on student video projects for Goleta teachers in October.

Mr. Landfried has been married to his wife for 42 years. Ilze Landfried is a retired architect and UCSB building project manager. They had two sons — one son works at the Veterans Memorial Building in Santa Barbara and attends school; the other son is deceased. He was fortunate to buy a house in Montecito in the early 70s where he still lives. He enjoys walking his dog up the trail along a creek behind his house. Mr. Landfried has traveled a great deal in his life: camping from DC to Wyoming; spending time in Florida, New Orleans, Mexico, and Louisanna; travelling in Europe, Vietnam, China, New Zealand, South Africa, Latvia (his wife’s native country), Costa Rica, and Belize; trekking in Nepal to RVing in British Columbia and Utah.

In his spare time, Mr. Landfried plays beach volleyball doubles every week, likes to hike in Santa Barbara and the Sierras, and ushers at the Granada, Lobero, Arlington, and Vic theaters. He is very grateful for his family, home, career, and to be living in Santa Barbara. He really enjoys working with the awesome families of Mountain View.

Ellen Clark — Science Specialist Ellen Clark teaches science to children in second through sixth grade; each class receives science instruction once a week. Mrs. Clark’s road to Mountain View School is as varied as her interests. She began her career as a wildlife biologist, taught environmental education at Bryce Canyon National Park, worked as a National Park Ranger on the Channel Islands, supervised student teachers at UCSB, taught high school biology and algebra, worked as a statistician for the Department of Fish and Game, developed educational materials for the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, and designed costumes for children’s theatre! She loves science education and enjoys watching her students discover and create. The new STEM lab is an exciting addition to science at Mountain View School and she sees endless possibilities as it grows and develops. Mrs. Clark cares for each of her students,

and wants each student to enjoy all aspects of science so they develop an appreciation to care for the Earth.

In addition to teaching science, Mrs. Clark coordinates Mountain View School’s annual Family Science Night where scientists from Ventura and Santa Barbara County share their knowledge with Mountain View students and their families. She also coordinates the annual spring Science Fair. She is always amazed by her brilliant students and with the different areas of science projects they chose.

Mrs. Clark and her husband have three children. Their oldest son is in graduate school and studying religious history. He is a youth pastor and high school water polo coach. Her youngest son is a former USFS fire fighter and now owns three startup companies, and her daughter just finished a national Broadway tour and lives in New York City.

Mrs. Clark loves nothing more than teaching science, living in the Santa Ynez Mountains, reading, writing, volunteering, gardening, hiking in the Sierras, visiting art museums and spending time with her family. She is grateful to work at a school that supports science education.

Music Recital Monday, December 7

On Monday, December 7, from 7:00 to 8:00 pm, Mountain View students who are studying music will have a chance to perform for the Mountain View Community. In order to perform, the students must be enrolled in formal music lessons and must return a form which includes the name of their performance piece(s) and their music teacher’s signature. See Friday folders for the form. Please alert your music teachers so that they can help with planning.

We’re very excited about giving our children the chance to share their talents with their school friends and to praise and validate them for all their hard work.

Scott Lillard Music Specialist

When MVS Foundation members and school staff developed the concept for the STEM lab, just a year ago, they set a budget of $100,000 to build, furnish and equip it for optimal use. At this writing, we are pleased to report that $48,000 has been raised toward this goal:

■ $20,000 from an anonymous donor

■ $5,000 from the PTA

■ $23,000 from individual donations and grants procured by the Foundation.

At the MVSF Board meeting in November, the Foundation made an additional grant of $10,000 to the STEM lab for the purchase of sinks and cabinets, which will be installed soon. This follows MVSF’s contributions to the District for the materials and supplies used to build the lab this summer, and a grant for the purchase of two 3-D printers.

On November 7, UCSB’s Community Volunteer Foundation approved MVSF’s request for a $3,000 grant to purchase “Magiscopes” and a “Blue Bot Hive” for the lab.

The Foundation seeks to raise another $52,000 for STEM Lab equipment, furniture and supplies. We are appealing only to sources outside the current MVS families – foundation grants, corporate donations, and individual donations from the broader community. Please view our website for our list of donors. If you happen to know any of them, please let them know you appreciate their continued support of Mountain View School. They are neighbors, friends, former students and their families, businesses and other grantors, who are committed to excellence in education and who recognize that an investment in our neighborhood school is an investment in the future of our children and our community.

The MVSF Development Committee is working to develop short and long term plans for fundraising, including researching and applying for grants. We are optimistic about fully equipping the lab with educational tools to facilitate an exciting hands-on engineering and science curriculum that will best prepare our students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. This will be an ongoing project to be completed in stages as funds are received.

As the holiday season approaches, if you or your student has a special friend or relative searching for a unique and valuable gift, please consider telling them about our foundation.

The goal of MVSF is to support and sustain the tradition of excellence at Mountain View School. We are excited about our vision of what we can accomplish in the years ahead. With the continued support of neighbors, friends and businesses, “We know we can!”

The Foundation’s current board members are: Laura Ciontea, Regina Magid, Fritz Pinney, Sharon Rossol, Mike Schley, Ned Schoenwetter, Angel Sugleris, and Bob Wood. The MVSF was founded in 2013 by Ned Schoenwetter and Nancy and Mike Schley. Eden Jasiorkowski serves as PTA and MAGIC Campaign liaison to the board.

Human

Papillomavirus

(HPV) Vaccine Two vaccines, Cervarix and Gardasil,

are currently available to prevent certain strains of human papillomavirus that may cause cervical, anal, penile and oropharyngeal cancers and genital warts. Both boys and girls can become infected by HPV if they are sexually active. Vaccination is recommended for girls and boys at age 11 or 12.

The Cervarix vaccine is approved for use in girls only. Gardasil is licensed for use in boys and girls. Both vaccines are given as a series of 3 injections over a period of six months.

HPV vaccine is recommended for preteens to enable their bodies to develop an immune response before they become sexually active. The vaccine can be given to teens and adults up to 26 years of age who were not previously vaccinated for HPV.

Parents should discuss this disease and prevention measures with their child’s health care provider and make an informed decision regarding vaccination.

Additional information can be found at www.cdc.gov/hpv/vaccine.html

2015 Fall Book Fair

Our 2015 Chaucer’s Book Fair was a resounding success!

THANK YOU for your donations to the Library!

Not only did we received 20 new books for our shelves and $50 in gift certificates,

we also made almost $1000.00 for our PTA’s Library budget — a pretty outstanding profit for two hours!!

THANK YOU to all the families who supported our Library by way of pre-purchasing gift

certificates, donating books and shopping at Chaucer’s during the book fair. We could not do this without your

continued support!

THANK YOU to Mrs. Jill Stevens and Mr. Ned

Schoenwetter for supporting us in the office!!

THANK YOU to Mrs. Sylvia Kautz

for sharing your time and knowledge with us.

A big round of applause goes to our favorite local bookstore — Chaucer’s!!

Your Book Fair Team,

Mona Lehman and Jeannette Todd
