By Patrick Jeski, Rally Sport Region President

Patrick Jeski, Rally Sport Region President

So you’ve decided to throw your hat in the ring and run for president of the region or perhaps a position on the board this year. You are probably wondering what the next step is. You should contact our secretary, Mary Ann Kantrow, to secure your spot on the ballot. She will ask you to submit a paragraph to introduce yourself to the region and explain why you would be a good candidate for the job. Well, I’m here to help you write your submission.

For a good idea of the suggested format, look at a prior year’s ballot. Past issues of the Bahn Stormer are always available online. But of course you keep yours in binders arranged by date, with multi colored post-its marking particularly interesting articles. I sug-gest you start off with a brief biography followed by your “pitch.”

The biographical section of your submission should be at least 60% truthful, 35% plausible, and certainly no more than about 5% wildly exaggerated fantasy. For those of you with track experience, any descriptions of track events will automatically be counted in the last category. It is perfectly acceptable to have your submission ghost-written. My own ballot submission for my first term was written by Portia, as a personal favor. (She said it was a favor, but it looked more like revenge to me.) Her write-up did meet the guidelines above, and despite it I still managed to win the elec-tion. Running unopposed may have helped a little as well. Not many people know that I wrote the first draft of Owen Balduf’s entry. When choosing someone to ghost-write your submission, you should choose someone who knows you well, knows your accom-plishments, and likes or at least tolerates you. Owen allowed me to write his story anyway. Fortunately for him, Mary Ann edited the submission prior to placing it on the ballot.

Now that you have introduced yourself to the mem-bership, it’s time to win over the electorate. What will you contribute to improve the club? What can you offer the membership directly? For this section of your submission, the bar is slightly lowered. A good pitch should be at least 5% truthful, and the remaining 95% of it could (in fact should) be complete fabrica-tion. You should include at least 20% (by word count) impossible-to-keep campaign promises. While none of the content of this section need be plausible, it is important to remember that to get the votes, you must fool more members than your opponents. This would be a good time to mention, as I have learned, even as president I do not have the power to fix traffic tickets or arrange PCA funded pork projects for our members. To each member who voted for me to get free tires from PCA national, I humbly apologize for the confu-sion.

Once your submission is complete, send it along with your name and PCA membership number to Mary Ann Kantrow. Once you are on the ballot, you are free to campaign as you see fit. While the region does not have specific campaign funding limits or restrictions on funding sources, it is recommended that you keep your campaign budget under $50,000. We want all candidates to have a level playing field.

The deadline for submission is August 1, 2009. I look forward to reading your submissions on the ballot!

Patrick

The weather looked iffy leading up to the event but in the end the Orphan Cars Show Rally ended up warm, dry and even a little sunny. Almost 20 cars and nearly twice as many participants met in Pinckney for a drive laidout through country roads of Jackson, Livingston, and Washtenaw Counties by hosts Mike and Kathy O’Rear.

A stop in Dexter for coffee marked the one hour point, and a chance to chat with friends. But soon the cars were off for a back roads route to Riverside Park in Ypsilanti. The Orphan Car Show had more than 90 minutes left to run when we arrived, which gave ev-eryone plenty of time to seek out their favorite orphan brand, enjoy the weird and unusual vehicles, or just

people watch.

The “Count the Red Barns” contest was won by Karl and Nancy Schulz. Actually, they tied with Mike & Jennifer McNalley and won the wonderful and expen-sive prize in a coin flip. Suffice to say the crowd was held spellbound with tension.

Several members joined together for a spontaneous dinner at the Side Track Grill in Ypsilanti’s historic Depot Town.

If you missed this event, not to worry. There are more fun drives coming up this year. Join us.

$$$$ I would like to share with you the difference between ATE Super Blue Racing (ATE Blue) and ATE TYP 200 (ATE Clear) and why I prefer ATE Clear.

They both have the same Wet Boiling Point (200°C) and Dry Boiling Point (280°C), which is the important part. The ATE Blue is not DOT approved because it is blue. It also seems to have a long-term affect on the plastic reservoirs, staining them blue from the inside. This makes it become difficult to see the fluid level when it should be easy.

It appears to me that the reason why they make the fluid blue was to separate the clear from the blue during brake fluid changes. If you run enough fluid through the system and do it often, the ATE Clear is what I would recommend.

Try to avoid keeping open cans of brake fluid on the shelf because it has a tendency to collect moisture, which will lower the boiling point of the fluid under extreme conditions. Until next issue- Jeff

I have a fantasy of winning the lottery or falling into a financial windfall, so I enjoy cruising Craig’s List, looking at what older Porsches are going for. My son Chris and I are having a great time with his 1967 912, but it doesn’t have air conditioning, just vent windows, and there are many days in San Diego when it’s just too hot to jump into a non-air car, no matter how much fun it is to drive. And I’ll also admit it would be nice to have a Porsche of my own.

My dream car is one made after 1976, when Porsche switched to anodized bodies to prevent rust, with a working air-conditioner. In the mid nineteen-eighties they upgraded to electronic fuel injection, and that sounds like a nice feature, although I really like the look of the mid to late seventies cars. And, oh yeah, I’m not really excited about the whale tail cars, they seem a bit over-the-top to me. It seems as if you might be able to get a decent, drivable Porsche in these categories for about ten or twelve thousand dollars. I don’t really expect to have that kind of money to throw around for a hobby car; but that’s where the lottery comes in.

So one day, while on a break at work, I’m cruis-ing Craig’s list and spy a 1984 911 Carrera listed at $3,000.00; according to the photos, it’s a gorgeous car, with metallic turquoise-blue paint, chrome Fuch wheels, an immaculate tan interior, only 92,278 miles and is in showroom condition. Obviously this is a mis-print; this car should be worth $16-18,000.00.

Now I have to tell you that I’m a guitar player, and one of my favorite songs to play is “The $65.00 Corvette”; about a sixty-year old man who leaves his wife of forty years for a young teen-aged girl. It seems he left home without his credit card and sends his wife a wire that says, “I need money dear, sell the car.” Obvi-ously she thinks $65.00 is a pretty good price, in this instance. I had recently had lunch with an old friend who said he saw a newspaper ad for a 55 Chevy for $500.00; he was intrigued, but too busy to pursue it. Later he saw another friend who claimed that an acquaintance of his had gone to see the car. A little old lady answered the door and took him out to the

garage. When she uncovered the car, it turned out to be a 1955 Corvette, the rarest Vette of all. He told the lady, “This car is worth way more than that”. She replies, “My son was killed in Viet Nam and it was his car; it’s just too painful having it around. Please get it out of here.”My friend insists the story has to be true, after all he heard it from a friend that was a friend of the lucky recipient. He’s still kicking himself for not checking it out.

Hmmm.

So I figure, “what the heck”; and send the guy an e-mail asking “what’s the correct price on your Porsche?” Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right? The next day I received the following reply.

“Hi, Sorry for the delay, been busy at work.” He goes on to say that “the car is still available for the price of $3,000.00 US + shipping to your door.” (Estimated shipping cost, anywhere in the US, $800.00) “It is in immaculate condition and in the care of a shipping company where I left it before taking a job in my native country of Swit-zerland.” He determined that the costs of shipping the car to Switzerland and certifying it for that country were prohibitive and now he just wants to sell it. He adds that, “any transaction would be covered by the Vehicle Purchase Protection Pro-gram, which means that after you receive the car, you will have a 5-day inspection period to inspect it and to evaluate its mechanical and cosmetically (sic) condition before buying the vehicle.”

Signed “All the best!”Curtis

This is getting interesting. I could somehow manage to put together $3,800.00, even if I had to use my credit card or sell aluminum cans for the next five years. I fired back an e-mail asking the current location of the car, figuring that if I saw it in the San Diego Craig’s List, there might be a possibility of actually inspect-

Another year of toying with the idea of trying your hand at track driving? Make this the year!

Drivers’ education events offer the perfect chance for car lovers to learn more about performance driving.

What is Drivers’ Education?

Rally Sport Region’s drivers’ education is nothing like the driving classes you had in high school (or perhaps through the Sears Driving School). RSR’s DEs offer you the chance to learn advanced driving techniques on a real race track. DEs take place over the course of a day or weekend, pairing drivers of all levels with certified instructors and allowing them to experience driving at speed. Our sessions are a safe and chal-lenging way for you to experience driving a Porsche the way it was meant to be driven. If you love your car and have always wanted to learn more about driving technique, join us!

When you participate in Rally Sport Region DEs you get...

* An experienced PCA instructor (who in many cases is a current or former race driver) assigned to you for the duration of the course. You’ll develop a relationship that will allow you to apply and refine what you learn on and off the track. * Two or more classroom sessions covering proper driving technique. The classes offer plenty of time to ask questions. * Four hands-on driving sessions (“runs”) on the track. No need to worry about people being faster/slower than you; you will be assigned to a group ac-cording to your experience and ability. * “Hot Laps”: the option to ride in your instructor’s car or have the instructor drive your car at speed. This is a great way to see firsthand what a car can do. * Breakfast, lunch and beverages are included and supervised by RSR Treasurer/chef extraordinaire Burghard Linn. * If needed, a free loaner helmet. * A guaranteed relaxed, collegial and fun atmo-sphere!

So, if you are ready to explore the capabilities of your car join us for one of our Drivers’ Education events.Complete and submit the form on the facing page or, even more conveniently, check out the Rally Sport Region website (rsp.pca.org), under the Drivers’ Edu-cation tab.

Q: I just went out to start my car and the battery is dead. If I can start it with a jump, is it OK to let the car run for a while and charge up? - Justin

A: It is a widely held belief that the car’s charging system is for charging the battery. Oddly, the folks who designed, built and supplied your alternator do not think so. I know it doesn’t make sense but Bosch warns against trying to charge a dead battery with the car’s charging system.

The alternator’s mission is to replenish the electricity lost during starting and maintain the charge of the bat-tery by powering all the vehicle accessories. A dead battery can send the alternator into thermal overload by delivering too much electricity. Bosch clearly states this on the installation instructions provided with every alternator. It certainly doesn’t seem intuitive does it?

Alternators are designed to produce their rated load for relatively short periods and then taper off. Alterna-tors that produce maximum output continuously are used on commercial vehicles such as police cars, ambulances, etc.

If you have the time to wait, your best bet is to charge the battery at a low rate to charge it up fully. I use a 2 amp manual charger for the first 24 hours then an automatic charger at the 10 to15 amp setting for an-other 24 hours. To fully charge a stone dead battery may take a couple days and it is best not to rush the process. If you are going to try this however, please note the following paragraph.

If you notice the odor of rotten eggs or see liquid bub-bling out of the battery, unplug the charger at the wall socket and sprinkle a little baking soda on that bub-bling liquid (which is probably acid). Leaking battery acid will damage the trunk of your Porsche and that nasty odor indicates the presence of an explosive gas (hydrogen). A spark can ignite the hydrogen which is why it is wise not to simply unclip the battery clamps.

If you are in a hurry and you can’t wait to drive your car, connect the jumper cables and let the running car send power to the dead battery for about 15 minutes before you even try to start your Porsche. Once your

car is running, rather than letting it idle, drive the car to charge it up. At higher rpm’s, the alternator runs cooler as it charges.

When you park the car that night, put the battery char-ger on at the 10 to 15 amp automatic setting. Usually one overnight charge will bring it back up to snuff if the battery is healthy. Please note: If you have a charger with both manual and automatic modes, I suggest that you only use the automatic setting. Keeping the bat-tery in a proper state of charge will save your alterna-tor and your battery tray. - MC Q: I just bought a 2007 Carrera 4 and I plan to take it to Drivers Ed this year. I wondered what I could do to get more power. Is it possible to install a turbo or a supercharger? - Jim

A: The quick answer is: sell it and buy a turbo. But I understand, this is the car you have and you want to have as much fun as you can. I feel the same way about my car, and I want more power too. For more power, very little is available that does not involve a huge outlay of cash. For my money, I would start with a sport exhaust, computer reflash, and a cold air intake. You can expect modest gains in power but more importantly, your car will feel faster.

For the turbo or supercharger option, there are com-panies that develop kits for newer cars but it is getting difficult to improve on Porsche engineering. Another factor on a new car is warranty. Porsche backs their products with an excellent warranty as long as the car is maintained and operated in accordance with their standards. If you modify a car under warranty, they can always tell you to “take a long walk on a short pier” if something breaks.

For Drivers Ed, find out how much fun your car can be with only a few only minor mods and next fall, after a season of fun, pose that question again. Some summertime seat time may change your perspective. - MC

ing the vehicle and maybe saving the shipping cost. Heck, it would be worth a plane ticket pretty much anywhere in the U.S. to check it out and maybe even drive it home. I also noted that the ad was no longer on Craig’s List, and asked for photos. (Maybe I was remembering the wrong car; could it really be that nice?)

The next day was Saturday and my wife and I were out running errands; I decided to drop by the office and check my e-mail to see if he had answered. I found the following reply (Cut-and-pasted for conve-nience) with photos attached—and yes indeed, the car was just as gorgeous as I recalled:

“Hello. The car is at the shipping company in Califor-nia and I already have a contract with them as I wanted to ship the car here in Switzerland. I attached some photos to my email.I got a quote from the shipping company and the shipping cost, including insurance is $800 US. I presume it would be fair to split the shipping cost so, we’ll pay $400 US each. Meaning, that the car and the shipping/handling will cost you $3,400 US. I think this is reasonable. Let me know.Since I presume you are not familiar with eBay’s Protection Program, I have briefly described the eBay transaction steps below:1. Buyer and seller reach an agreement (price and delivery conditions).2. Buyer sends money to eBay.3. eBay confirms to seller that the amount has been received.4. Seller performs the required services (ship-ping, insurance).5. Buyer accepts delivery and in maximum 5 days informs eBay about the acceptance.6. eBay releases the money to seller. As you can see, you will receive the car BEFORE any money is released to me. You will get the chance to inspect it, test drive it and everything you like while your money is still safely held in eBay’s account. ONLY after you confirm to eBay that you agree with the vehicle, will they release the money to me.

If, for some reason, you disagree with the car (I assure you that is NOT going to happen since my

car is in IMMACULATE condition inside and out) it will be shipped back to me at MY EXPENSE and eBay will send you your money back.If you agree, send me your full name and the shipping address.

As soon as I have your info, I will send it to eBay and they will contact you with all the payment details so we can move on.

Let me know if you’re willing to proceed on this basis. Thanks,Curtis”

I was reading this thinking, “It sounds legitimate and safe. Could I be so lucky? How could I go wrong at this price?” My wife was strangely silent in the car. I was so deep in thought that I missed two exits on the way home and ended up taking the scenic route; the whole while imagining myself driving this exciting car.

I decided to take a reality check long enough to stop and think, “This sounds too good to be true—and you know what they say.”A couple of weeks earlier I had attended a Porsche Club dinner at a local restaurant and sat across from Paul Young; in the course of the evening he mentioned that, a few years earlier, he had bought a Porsche on eBay. I thought I would ask him if he had heard of, or used, the Vehicle Purchase Protection Program. I didn’t have a phone number for him so I looked up fellow Porsche club member Angela Avitt in the phone book; her name was much more unusual than P. Young (three columns). When I got hold of her, she was in the car with her husband. I explained my reason for needing Paul’s number and they both com-mented that it was an unbelievably good price. “The car would be worth more than that even if it didn’t run.” My thoughts exactly. She gave me Paul’s number; and when I contacted him, he told me that he had driven to Phoenix to inspect his car before he purchased it. No luck here.

I tried Googling “eBayVehicle Purchase Protection Program” (Why eBay? I asked myself; the car was listed on Craig’s List.) and only found vague refer-ences to escrow companies, nothing about eBay handling financial transactions in the manner de-scribed. Hmmm…if that guy knew about eBay, why

not list it there; he would get a lot more than $3,000.00 for it. And, that looks like a PCA sticker in the back window—if he was a member, it seems that he would know many people that would scarf up that car in a heart beat.

Next I tried Googling “eBay Vehicle Purchase Protec-tion Program fraud”…BINGO! A thread that had pages and pages of people reporting similar scams; some-times the car would be a Prius, a Shelby Mustang, or an AMG Mercedes—in each case at a ridiculously low price. A few respondents mentioned that they were told that the car was at a shipping company in Cana-da; the name of the shipper (fictitious) and even a Car Fax were provided. Several people told of hearing about the scam just in time to stop payment on checks they had sent. The article said that the ads were usu-ally listed on Craig’s List and the most common story was, “I have changed the way I look at life, am cur-rently out of the country on a mission for United Way and any funds realized from the sale of the vehicle will be donated to charity.” They went on to describe, word for word, the Vehicle Purchase Protection Program, and the owner’s offer to split the freight costs.

The bubble burst, or at least fizzled, and with a sigh, I explained to my wife that the whole thing was just a common Internet scam. With a relieved look, her only comment was, “If we’re not spending $3,000.00 on a Porsche, can we buy that new couch we’ve been needing?” Oh well, I guess I’ll just keep buying my lottery tickets.
