Kelly Roberts, President The days are getting shorter, the trees are dropping their leaves and the north winds have already started to bring colder air into our little part of Michigan. So that can only mean one thing: it’s getting to be that time of year again when we all must face the fact that we have to put our beloved Porsches away for another long winter nap. Remember to follow all of the basic rules when preparing your Porsche for storage. Fill the gas tank with a good premium fuel and add a little fuel stabilizer to ensure reduced moisture content. Place a couple of moisture absorbent packs inside the passenger compartment, remove the battery or at least use a battery tender to keep your battery charged and lastly air up those tires to at least 50psi or better yet use tire cradles or jack stands to get the vehicle weight off the tires. A little common sense goes a long way to ensure your car will start early next spring. I would like to thank everyone who has come forward in the past few weeks to volunteer to fill the four open membership board positions. It’s you the members who keep this club functioning all year long, THANKS. For those members not running for one of the open membership board positions we still need your support by voting. If you haven’t completed and returned your ballot yet please do it today. I would like to thank Chuck Freitas for his many years of service to the club as our Advertising Chairperson. Chuck informed me last week that he needs a break from the advertising position. The position needs to be filled quickly to ensure

our records are accurately maintained. If you have any interest in advertising we need you. The position is very simple; the Advertising Chairperson monitors payments and solicits new advertising avenues. The Advertising Chairperson should be able to attend the monthly Membership Board meetings and must supply a written advertising report that shows payments made. This position also requires you to call on advertisers when payments are late. Please help. A record number of members have been participating in the monthly events. It is because of the efforts of members like Stewart and Sally Free who coordinated last month’s cider run and the upcoming Pratt Miller event that we continue to have on-going social events throughout the year. Thanks to Jim and Liz Christopher for coordinating this year’s Captain Peach Fuzz fall color tour and next month’s annual general meeting and pig roast. In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to everyone who has supported me over the past two years in the role of Club President. I know at times I have been a pain in the butt when I repeatedly ask for volunteers to step forward but it has all been for the good of the club. If I have offended anyone please accept my apology. Thanks, Kelly

2005 Cider September 24 found about 25 Porsches, and almost twice as many members, converging on Brighton to begin our First Annual Cider Run. The first half of the Run found the group wring-ing out some of the twisting roads around Pinckney, Hell, and Dexter. Stopping at Jenny’s Farm Stand we enjoyed apple cider and pumpkin donuts while watching the farm animals. The second half of our Run uncovered some interesting curves around Unadilla, Gregory, and Howell. The group ended its Run at Ciao Amici’s restaurant in Brighton where our menu included lobster fettucine, chicken marsala, steak, and pork. We appreciate all the positive feedback from participants who are looking for-ward to our Second Annual Cider Run next fall. Stewart & Sally Free

The weather was an almost perfect fall day in southern lower Michigan making a major contribution to the enormous success of the The Third Annual Captain Wrongway Peachfuzz Color Tour! Twenty-nine Porsches plus four as-sorted enthusiasts made the seventy-mile tour -- we had Porsches of all shapes and sizes spanning forty-nine model years on this year's tour! The route followed a path of country roads from Fenton to Chelsea with a rest stop in Pinckney. The group arrived in Chelsea in time to enjoy the downtown area before enjoying the fruits of the Common Grill. In fact, a special thanks to the folks at the Common Grill in Chelsea for serving up a great dinner and creating a fine ending for this year's tour. In keeping with our distorted sense of humor as well as the tour's namesake, this tour featured a number of fairly obscure questions about our favorite Moose & Squirrel -- in the past, the person or couple that correctly answers the most questions usually will get a complimentary dinner.... This year's tour prize was a four DVD collec-tion of the first year of Rocky and Bullwinkle! Surprisingly two couples, Elliot and Wendy Wagenheim as well as Owen Balduf and Cindi Billmaier, correctly answered six of the seven questions and they graciously agreed to share the prize. Also of great surprise was the revelation that the lone "Brit" in the crowd knew nothing of Rocky & Bullwinkle and lobbied heavily that future tours have a more international tone; perhaps next year the tour will be named “In Search of the Holy Grail Color Tour”. Liz and I have thoroughly enjoyed hosting the color tours; from the number of participants, the amount of laughter and number of smiles we think this last tour was, maybe, the best of the last four. Believe us when we tell you it has been both satisfying as well as gratifying to see group a of strangers with, initially, one common de-nominator come together and have a simply great time! On Saturday, November 5th we will be hosting the Annual General Meeting - from what we surmise there will be an, approximate, half-hour of club business followed by a pig and turkey roast, bon-fire and some great company. Of special interest will be the very special invention - a combination chain-saw, margarita mixer! We love to entertain and invite you to attend. Next year, the tour will be hosted by Gary and Carolyn Starin and is scheduled for Sunday, Oc-tober 15, 2006. Jim and Liz Christopher

BITS OF THOUGHT FROM JEFF

Tires: The Break-In Process

Make sure you are careful when you are exploring the capabilities of your newly installed tires. All tires, including winter tires, require a break-in period of a few hundred miles for optimum per-formance. It is also important for you to understand that new tires will be a little slower to respond and that new, full tread depth brings with it a little more tread squirm until the tread wears down.

Winter tires have their own personal-ity and handling traits and will feel dif-ferent than the summer or all-season

tires being replaced. New winter tires begin with deeper tread depths and more open tread designs that may con-tribute to more tread squirm and you may notice a reduction in handling re-sponsiveness.

Another thing to check when install-ing new tires is setting and maintain-ing inflation pressure. Make sure it is at its recommended inflation pressure and it will benefit you to check it fre-quently. Until next issue, Jeff

Need Car Advice?

Ask Portia ©

Dear Portia, My son tells me that playing video games will make him a better driver. Is this true? He is being a real pest about this. Pater Noster Dear PN, Playing video games that involve racing situations on street or race courses is fun and can hone the already sharp teenage reflexes. Just don’t expect much transfer to the real world. Playing video games makes you a better gamer. Only real life, seat of the pants experience will make him a better driver. Portia suggests you get him a kart to practice with. When he’s sixteen get him a non-running 914 to work on. This will keep him busy for years and, with any luck, you won’t see him again until he’s in his mid twenties. Dear Portia, What is the hottest new fashion color for this fall? Helen in Troy Dear HiT, Didn’t I meet you once at a cocktail party in Sparta? You were all over some guy named Paris. Color in the fashion world changes about as often as Imelda Marcos changes shoes and for about the same reason. Portia, being well over six feet tall and blonde, looks great in any color except pink. Stay away from black because it’s so boringly overdone. Try a color with some flash, like Guards Red. Dear Portia, When should I plan to put my Porsche in storage for the winter? Calendar Watcher Dear CW, Dumkopf! Don’t look at the calendar. Look out the window. Wind and rain are no problem. Some of the best driving days are in late Fall when the summer drivers are gone and the weather ads a brisk nip to the air. If it is snowing or if the temp is below 35 degrees then it is time to store the little darling. Some RSR members put on snow tires and drive all winter but Portia can’t abide the thought of salt on a Porsche. It just seems blasphe-mous.

Portia wants to remind her fans that she will entertain any questions pertaining to cars and driving. She will gladly provide you with feedback, answers or abuse at her discretion. So don’t be shy, just Ask Portia. ([email protected])

2006 Rally Sport Region Women’s-Only Driver’s Education Day RSR is looking into the possibility of conducting a “Women’s-Only” Track Driving education day at Waterford race-way during a weekday sometime in 2006. This event would give the women in our chapter the opportunity to ex-perience track driving and learn what their spouse or significant-other gets “all pumped up” about without the “testosterone effect” and apprehension of having to drive on the track with the guys. What you will learn: All participants will receive a full day of 1 on 1 instruction and four 20 to 30 minute track sessions with a qualified and experienced RSR instructor in a very safe and controlled track environment. Classroom instruction will also be provided. You will learn the basics of track driving and vehicle dynamics and control during acceleration, brak-ing and cornering. Whether or not you ever decide to try this experience again – what you learn on the track at this event will make you a safer driver on the street and may even save your life one day. What you will need: You will be required to provide your own vehicle: an every-day vehicle, a compact to midsized 2 or 4 door sedan with good condition street tires and fully functional 3-point seat belts for both the driver and front seat passenger is preferred. As an option – if you have experience driving your significant-other’s track car, then that would also be OK to bring to this special event. You will need a proper fitting helmet: Either an SA (automotive)-rated or M (motorcycle) rated helmet. RSR only has five SA-rated “loaner” helmets available so please plan to bring your own helmet or borrow one. Age, Drivers License and Vehicle Insurance requirements: All participants must be 18 years of age or older, pos-sess a valid driver’s license and their vehicle must be fully insured. Participants under the age of 21 will require parental permission and attendance of at least one parent during the event. At this time (based on 2005 costs) it is estimated that this event will cost $130 per person for RSR members or spouses/significant-others of RSR members and $150 for non-RSR members. Lunch will also be provided. Right now we are only soliciting responses to see what the interest level is to put on this event for the women in our club. If you might have an interest in participating in this 2006 event, please contact: Gary Starin at 248-887-2524 or at [email protected].

the Cadillac CTS-V involvement in GTS endurance, ALMS (American Le Mans Series), and America's Speed World Challenge racing programs.

Please RSVP by Nov. 5 to Stewart Free 810-229-2351 or [email protected]

just off Grand River on William K. Smith Dr. between Milford Rd and Wixom Rd.

We will go to a restaurant for lunch afterwards

Annual General Meeting Date/Time: November 5th at 5:00pm

Place: Jim & Liz Christopher’s, Ortonville, MI RSVP: [email protected] or 248.627.8655

For a new twist, Jim and Liz would like this year's event to include a pig and turkey roast -- but, for this "roast" to go forward we must have at least twenty-five to thirty members present. Jim and Liz will provide Potato Chips, soft drinks, a bonfire and the fixings for "s’mores" and ask that those planning to attend bring something to pass. An RSVP would be greatly appreciated. In the event that we have less than the twenty-five to thirty members, the "fall-back" main dish for the event will be sloppy Joes.

The Christopher's address is 901 S. Brandt Road; Ortonville; 48462 - easily accessed from both US-23 and I-75. Brandt Road runs north off Grange Hall Road two miles west of M-15 to the east and three miles east of Dixie Highway to the west. All of the roads are paved, primary roads except Brandt Road -- the home lies one-quarter mile north of Grange Hall Road on a very well maintained dirt road.
