Junior sailors will once again beout on the water, in the Sound dur-ing a week of intensive work, test-ing, learning, having fun and yes, sailing. Pensacola Beach Yacht Club, sponsors of the sailing camp, hasmany years of Junior Sailing in itshistory, but it was all destroyedwhen Ivan completely depleted itsfleet of small boats.

Buck Lee, executive director ofthe Santa Rosa Island Authority re-ceived a "very satisfactory" ratingfrom Fred Gant, Board chairman. Inreading the report at their May 6meeting, Jayne Bell, SRIA directorof administration, said the report re-vealed that Lee's performance was"very satisfactory" to "excellent."

"Thank you for your leadershipand guidance of the SRIA," Gantsaid congratulating Lee.

"All the positive things wouldnot be possible without the staff,"Lee responded. "Any organizationis as strong as its weakest link andwe are strong. If I look good, it isbecause of them."

The Board gave their approvalwith some reservations to the re-quest by Fun Coast Promotions tohost Friday Night Teen Dances atthe Gulf Pier.

Doug McAllister, Fun Coastowner, told the board that the danceswould be alcohol free and the agelimit is 13 to 17-year-olds.

The board gave the authority

to Buck Lee to suspend the dancesif they are interfering with publicsafety. Doug McAllister said theywould abide by the rules establishedby the Authority.

"I think this is great," Boardmember Dave Pavlock commented."A positive move on the part of therisk takers. I look forward to it beingbusy."

A request to place the PlungeHippo Waterslide at the former siteof the Bank of the South was movedto a special board meeting before theMay 27 meeting. A number of safetyconcerns were brought to the atten-tion of Board members by audiencemembers including by Dr. Lila Cox,who said, "This is all on privateleasehold property, but slow downand look at the safety consider-ations. You spend a lot of time im-proving public safety with our life-guards, and I would hate to have achild run over crossing this danger-ous stretch of Ft. Pickens Road."

Buck Lee added that placing aslide there would interfere with AirShow safety since helicopters werealways allowed to use that space byAmerican Fidelity, the leaseholder ofthe property.

The discussion regarding thematter of hiring a traffic engineer tostudy the traffic in the core area wasinitiated by board member Dr. Tho-mas Campanella who said hethought it was not necessary.

"This study will have to dealwith the nuts and bolts, who parkswhere, that kind of study," Dr.

Campanella said. "It's not as impor-tant as getting people out here. Weneed to look at how to bring peopleto the Beach."

Campanella also pointed outthat the payment for the plannerscomes from the Island BeautificationFund which is SRIA monies, notPortofino's money.

A motion to move the item tothe May 27 meeting was approvedfive to one with Campanella votingagainst.

Ed Schroeder, chairman of thePensacola Convention and Visitor'sBureau told the SRIA that total lodg-ing nights were higher in thePensacola Bay Area than they werein other counties to the east andwest.

Once you retire you're stuckwith the word "retired." It shows upeverywhere, on all your documents, insurance policies, IRS forms, every-thing. I'm always tempted to write,"no longer working" or "hiding in asecluded place," or even "no longerin use." Sometimes I visualize howthe computer would react to this in-formation. Probably, I would findmyself with no bank accounts andcredit cards. What a bummer.

So, I have to face it. I'm retired. It says so and has been written onall my important documents (allthree of them) since 1995.

I am really doubly retired be-cause I am married to a man who alsohas to fill in the word "retired" whenthe question asks for occupation. Hecould write, "busy all day long" or"running errands for Jane" or"cleaning the pool" or "planting to-matoes." Wouldn't the computers doa back flip over those occupations?

When Frank and I stoppedworking fourteen years ago, theonly thing that changed was that wewere doing fun things instead ofrunning our businesses. We weretraveling all over the United Statesby land, sea and air. We often wentto Biloxi to test our skills at the gam-ing tables. (The Casinos always

seemed to outsmart us.) We enjoyedbeach life to the fullest, mostly bygoing to Bobby D's Beach Bar.

It was all fun and games untillittle incidents kept disrupting ourlives. It was all stuff that slowed usdown. We discovered aches andpains.

What does Frank, who nolonger works do, all day? Well, hemakes a long list every night, andthen carries it all out the next morn-ing. He enjoys driving, seeing hisfriends, visiting his son and daugh-ter-in-law, and as you know if youread this column regularly, his is alsothe shopper, chief cook and bottlewasher.

The afternoons stretch lazilyin front of us. Fortunately, we bothlike to read. We read the IslandTimes, the News Journal as bor-ing as it is, USA Today, Time, For-tune, Messing About In Boats, AllAbout Boats, Yachting, Sports Il-lustrated, Body and Soul, BottomLine and Forbes. We read booksabout boats and boat trips. Onwarm days we sit on our balconyand watch the birds who come toour feeder. We are also absorbingVitamin D, and getting a tan.

Somehow, I discovered a gapin our day about a half hour before

the five o'clock news. I tried to fill itwith chess and Scrabble. No, he whois not working is also not playingboard games.

I had pretty much decided tofill that empty space with yoga bymyself. Just some chair exercises totake up the time. Eventually, I askedFrank to join me.

"Would you like to do someexercises," I asked, tentatively.

"Sure," Frank responded affa-bly.

"These would be yoga chairexercises. No pretzel positions," Iadded hastily.

He fell silent. Then he spokeafter a few minutes of contemplation."Okay, I'll do it if you promise not tochant."

Getting him to do yoga was alot easier than I had expected. All Ihad to do or not do was chant.

"First, we will do Breath of Firefor two minutes," I said.

"What," he asked."You can't back out on me now.

You said you would do the exercisesif I didn't chant."

"All I asked is what is Breath ofFire," he said.

After I explained the techniqueto him and spelled out the wonder-ful benefits of the exercise, he imme-diately caught on and held the twominutes in the very first session.

We went on to Reach for theSky, Neck Curls, Waist Curls, ToeLifts, Back and Forth Hands, andDeep Breathing.

Then, I added something ma-cho, weight resistance. I had somethree pound weights and we did acouple of exercises. He announcedthat he would go to the store andget some heavier weights for him-self. He was totally hooked.

So we filled in the gap beforethe five o'clock news with a mixtureof yoga and weight resistance train-ing.

The yoga was all done withoutchanting, building a shrine, or burn-ing a candle. Except I would chantunder my breath. Nothing audible. Ihad to be sneaky.

So between writing (Jane) andtracking the weather on the com-

puter (Frank) and NFL and collegiatefootball (Frank and Jane) we havethe gaps pretty well covered.

Who would have ever thoughta manly guy like Frank would actu-ally admit he liked doing yoga?

Who knows? Maybe, the daywill come when I will see a candleburning brightly on the table be-tween us and a small shrine will beresting protectively nearby. And,perhaps, I will hear a very low rendi-tion of "Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo."Frank will have come full circle.

And if that day never comes, Iam still happy with the hodge podgeyoga. It quite effectively fills the gapjust before the five o'clock news.

FIRST DUO WINNERKen Jones was back on the

Beach May 1 for the Wooly BoogerBawl. Stump, as he is known aroundthe Beach, arrived from Georgia toassist Queen Shugah in keeping thestorms away and to set the recordstraight. Stump pulled out a copy ofthe September 10, 1992 edition of TheIslander Newspaper which provedthat he was the first Wooly Boogerto earn both Rookie Beach Bum andBeach Bum of the Year honors. Ap-parently, someone had mistakenlysaid Larry Keever was the first toachieve this lofty goal.

and his wife Cyndi drove from Mary-land to the Beach to celebrate Shu’sbirthday, May 15 with a surpriseparty at Paradise. Jayne Redmondand Buz Busby are both celebratingbirthdays on May 27. They will bepartying all day long.

Little did Michelle and DaphneRoberts realize what a grand legacythey were part of when they wereschool aged children growing up onPensacola Beach. Harry Gowensthought it was all wrong that thesetwo small girls should ride over twobridges on a long trip to elementaryschool twice each day. He felt Beachkids should have their own school,so he lobbied his friends on theSchool Board, got their approval, andstarted the first school on the Islandin his A-frame house.

Michelle and Daphne were thecorrect answer to the trivia questionand the winner was newcomer to theTrivia Table, Jim Hill, who now ownsan Island Times t-shirt.

Michelle and Daphne are nowmarried and have children of theirown. Michelle lives in Nashville, Ten-nessee and Daphne lives in GulfBreeze where she is a teacher at Ori-ole Beach Elementary School. Theywere among the first graduates of

Pensacola Beach Elementary School.Sir Morrie Drees filed the first

correct answer. Deb Friedman had theright answer as did Jayne DreesRedmond who noted that she wasprobably "wayyy" too late. Yes, shewas.

Kim LoBue's goof was a first forthe three time champion, when sheemailed Jayne and Amy Drees as heranswer.

Do you remember Lazy Day? Ri-chard Liveakos and his Lazy Dayband were at one time on the top offall the Beach charts. Now, Lazy Dayno longer exists. However, you maysee Richard on the Beach now andthen in a new role. Do you know whathe is doing now?

If you know, hurry and email it toIsland Times and you may win one ofthe coveted t-shirts.

Send your answer toislandtimes@bellsouth .net with“trivia” in the subject line and includeyour name. Deadline is May 26.

WineTalk

By David Griffin,Beach Wines and LiquorsWow, Island Times is in its fifth

year already! It's been such an amaz-ing ride that it's hard to even imag-ine the next five, but I sure don'twant to get off. A great big ThankYou to everyone who contributes, especially our loyal readers, whichmeans if you're reading this I'm talk-ing about you!

Bill and I have just returned fromBiloxi where we celebrated his birth-day and Mother's Day. Well, actu-ally on Mother's Day I wanted todrive over and check out one of myfavorite places in Mississippi. Wethought about going to New Or-leans, but I chose Bay St. Louis. Ifell in love with this tiny town bythe sea many years ago. The streetswere once lined with beautiful statelyhomes turned into antique shops.Sadly, many were lost to the hurri-canes. We did find one that hadbeen restored to most of its originalbeauty and they had photos of be-fore and after renovation. I boughta vintage purse made in West Ger-many. When the proprietor realizedwe were from Pensacola, she wantedto know if the economy was as badhere as it is there. I had to tell herthat having been poor all my life Ireally haven't noticed any difference.Somehow we always manage to havewhat we need and we still get to livein Paradise!

Okay, I know y'all have beenwaiting on pins and needles to hearall about the new Wooly Booger"No 'Canes Bawl." Johnny Barbatoand the Lucky Dogs were rockin'and we were dancing in the sand allnight long. I have to tell you aboutthe completely unexpected gifts. My intention was to let everyonesign the new Wooly Booger "NoHurricanes" sheet created for theBawl and then pin on a hoo-doo/voo-doo charm. Apparently, I didnot make my intentions clear andpeople brought gifts to QueenShugah. I'm not complaining be-cause you know I loved everything.

Chrissy Cook was the first togreet me with a lovely whistle shellto help me blow the hurricanes away! How cool is that? Then came LilaCox with Sweet Shop lip gloss

which Queen Shugah will definitelyneed after all that blowing! Next wasSandi Johnson with the Queen's fa-vorite elixir for soothing her parchedthroat. (Did they get together onthis? I don't know, but I like it!)Quickly following was ShelleyJohnson with magical crystals intheir own special pouch and deliv-ering Jane Cooper's gift of a Hurri-cane Catcher made by the Lakota In-dians (who really know about powerand magic). Paulette Provostbrought her special voodoo dollcomplete with pins while CharlotteSpencer was our Moon Maiden whoblessed us with the energy of thehalf moon. Christine BunkieHewerdine assisted with her alwaysready dancing spirit while our poorRenee Mack was so busy workingshe never had a chance to play.Lynn Cieutat sent special blessingsfrom Mexico Beach and her late hus-band, Les, who started the WoolyBooger Social Club. Nancy Kitteland Lois Jernigan were dancing inMississippi while Jayne DreesRedmond was in New Orleans at JazzFest. I handed out gris-gris bags allnight and it was wonderful to haveyou all living in my fairy tale!

Last, but certainly not least, was the gift from our Barrier IslandGirl and photographer, D.J. Zemerick.D.J. also told me about a story shehad written for a young man in Min-nesota named Ryan. When stormsthreatened our Island and preciousbaby sea turtles last summer, Ryandemanded to be taken outside sev-eral times a day so that he could blowto the south and help keep the hur-ricanes away. Great work, Ryan! Thanks, D.J. for the beautiful cer-emonial earrings and for creatingthis powerful recipe for keeping thehurricanes away…

Entreaty to Queen Shugah

Oh, Queen Shugah, draw us nearEase our Wooly Booger fears.

Protect our island night and dayAnd keep the hurricanes away!

Lord, I love living in Paradise!See ya in the kitchen…

WINE IS FOR THE GRILL NEXT DOORIf you are looking to bring just the right giftwine to a neighbor's barbecue, bear in mindthat a crisp wine is the best accompanimentfor simple grilled dishes. Crispness comesfrom acidity, and such whites as SauvignonBlanc, Riesling and Pinot Gris/ Grigio havethe right amount of natural acidity to cut throughthe flavors of grilled foods and to act as aneffective counterpoint. For reds with the sameacidic qualities, try Sangiovese (Chianti) orPinot Noir. On the other hand, if grilled foodsare accented with marinades or sauces, thetable is set for such bold, expressive, fruitywines as New Zealand Sauvignon Blancsand Alsace Gewurztraminers. Or, try suchreds as California Zinfandels or AustralianShirazes.Hint: If your grilled foods have spicy or pep-pery flavors, try a wine to match, such asGewurztraminers and Sauvignon Blancs, orSyrah, Zinfandel, Merlot and some Cabernets.Barbecue time is rapidly approaching andwine is certainly an appropriate drink to serve.Questions about what wines complement aspecific food? Ask us, we love to talk aboutwines. If you are having a party, we'll behappy to help you regarding the quantities ofwine you will need. Here at Beach Winesand Liquors, Inc, at 5 Via de Luna, we carrya large selection of wines and other spirits.Give us a call at 850-932-8850.

Wooly Boogers came from near and far to help Queen Shugah stir up a storm of voodoo to keepthe hurricanes away . Appearing at the May 1 Bawl at Paradise are original Wooly Boogers (Lto R): Stump Jones, Bunkie Hewerdine and Andy Brunt.

Queen Shugah Number Somethin’ Somethin’ Kathi Lewis brought the Wooly Boogers out ofhiding for the Keep the Hurricanes Away Bawl, May 1 at Paradise. Accepting gris gris and goodluck charms, the all-knowing Queen Shugah had partiers dancing in the sand all night long.

Road To Fort PavesWay To Opening

The re-opening of Fort Pickensto vehicles has taken a long and wind-ing road, but the journey is almostcomplete. According to Nina Kelson,Gulf Islands National Seashore pub-lic affairs officer, the road to FortPickens is nearing completion, butofficials do not have a firm date whenit will be open to the public.

“When paving is complete, theroad must pass inspection by theFlorida Department of Transportationbefore it will be released to the ParkService,” Kelson said. “We hope tobe open by Memorial Day weekend, but cannot make any promises.”

The speed limit is posted at 15miles per hour inside the park andthere is no electrical power. All camp-grounds are primitive style.

Q: "Why can't I get my AT&Temail?"

A: For several months now, some AT&T customers have beenexperiencing difficulty when tryingto use their email programs. Thecause --- AT&T's merger with Ya-hoo. As a result of the merger,AT&T is moving its email servicesto the Yahoo mail system. You willkeep your current email address butwill be using a different mail server.

For customers usingMicrosoft's Outlook or Outlook Ex-press, there may be an interruptionwhen their email account is movedto Yahoo's servers. Typically, thecustomer stops getting mail, or re-ceives a message indicating thatthey are using the wrong password. The solution is to modify the emailserver settings in your email pro-gram, rather than trying to change

the password.The email interruption usually

occurs after the customer receives anotice from AT&T indicating that itis time to upgrade to the new ATT-Yahoo home page. Unless you re-alize what is about to happen andfollow all the steps, you may onlypartially complete the process. Cer-tainly it can be confusing, but AT&Tcan usually help you to finish up-dating your account and making thenecessary changes to your email pro-gram settings. Talk to the customersupport technician and have themcheck to see if your account has beencompletely through the Yahoo con-version. Their phone number is 888-321-2375.

CATastrophe AvoidedFor the past few weeks I have

noticed a small puddle of water onmy kitchen floor, strategically lo-cated in front of the freezer andpositioned as if it might be com-ing from the automatic water andice dispenser located in the freezerdoor. I knew it was not the freezeron the fritz because we had justspent a small fortune replacing itsmother board. Plus I checked thecontents inside. Ben & Jerry andBubba were frozen to the core.

So I asked the Kid if he wasgetting up in the middle night topour himself a glass of water andthen maybe spilling some of it onthe floor. That was a negative. Then I remembered the Colonelhad a bad habit of over filling hiscoffee pot using the filtered waterfrom the freezer door by gettingsidetracked by his Blackberrybuzzing. He said he stopped thatpractice after I handed him themop and suggested he clean theentire floor, not just in front of thefreezer. Of course, I knew I wasn’tthe cause of the mystery puddle. That only left one other residentat the house – our cat, Sparky.

I announced at breakfast toboth the Colonel and the Kid thatI figured out how every morningthere was a puddle on the kitchen

floor. It was Sparky’s fault. Obvi-ously she had figured out how tojump from the glass top stove overto the freezer and was pushing thelever to get a drink. They thoughtshe was so clever and immediatelygave her treats. All I could thinkof was a more colorful version tothe Disney movie title, “That DarnCat!” As I stood and ate my break-fast (she was sitting on my stool),Sparky gave me the look as if tosay, “Human Lady, I didn’t do it.I only drink water from yourgrandmother’s heirloom crystalbowls.”

In the end, she was right.Once again Human Lady waswrong. Turns out we had a leak inour master bath which just hap-pens to be located on the secondfloor directly over the kitchen. It

wasn’t until the trickle became asteady stream pouring onto the floorfrom the ceiling above through a re-cessed light fixture, that we figuredout Sparky wasn’t as clever as wewanted to think she was.

However in Sparky’s cat eyes, the Colonel is her hero because hesaved the day and she no longer hasto step around a puddle of water onthe floor to get to my bar stool. TheKid has continued to retain his tol-erated status because he gave her ahalf bag of fishy treats for no rea-son. As for me, I received my morn-ing hiss and swat when I tried to re-move her from my stool when theColonel said I might want to beseated when I hear how much it wasgoing to cost to fix the master bath-room. Once again order is restored.

Until next time…

The Board of the PensacolaBeach Advocates held their meet-ing under the trees at MorganPark, Friday, May 1. President JimCox told the group that it had beena full year since Judge Jones hadhead the arguments on Ad Valo-rem taxes for Beach residents andhad not yet handed down a deci-sion.

Cox discussed the Core Arearenovation and noted that the sur-vey sent out by PBA had beenwell received by Santa Rosa IslandAuthority Executive Director BuckLee, the SRIA Board andBaskerville-Donovan engineers.

Discussing the size of hotelrooms on the Beach, Cox said hehad talked to CommissionerGrover Robinson on the issue, andRobinson said the plan was a “hor-rible political football.”

The potential owners of theformer Clarion property and theDays Inn have already securedtheir requests to develop largehotel rooms on Pensacola Beach.

Board members discussedthe role that the PBA would playin the upcoming planning pro-cess for the core area. They de-termined that the PBA would actas a conduit to be sure thatstakeholders are aware of theopportunities to give input dur-

A Cross in the Sand ByDr. Chuck Randle, Pastor

Pensacola Beach Community ChurchA Cross in the Sand

We are sometimes serious, andsometimes humorous, when wespeak of doctors practicing medi-cine. Actually, that is what happens.A doctor cannot go to a medicalbook and look up categories, suchas, “male, American, 6 feet tall, 230pounds, 55 years old,” and then findthe prescription that is acceptableto all who fit that category. The rea-son is that we respond to medicinesin different ways, depending on ourparticular body. One reason we haveso many different kinds of medicinesdesigned for one ailment is becausesome persons will respond positivelyto one, while others will respondnegatively. The challenge of thedoctor is to try and determine whichmedication will work best with thatparticular body.

We sometimes hear, “Well, he’sa practicing Christian,” or “She’s apracticing Jew,” and we even getmore specific by saying, “She’s apracticing Catholic, or Baptist, orEpiscopalian, etc.”

What is often meant is that theperson is serious about followingthat particular expression of religion. It’s different than what happens withthe “practicing physician.” How-ever, there may be some similarities.Religious practice has to do with theways in which we treat one another. We may try to be kind and loving, only to be rejected or even taken

advantage of. And we may be in-sulting to others by the ways werespond. Then we “practice” a dif-ferent way to achieve the same re-sult. As one person wrote, “Some-times I practice being a religiousperson, and sometimes I unfortu-nately claim the benefits of member-ship without deserving it. But I’mworking - er, practicing - on that.”

A psychologist has suggested

that Christianity has focused toomuch on “orthodoxy” – right belief– and not nearly enough on “ortho-praxy” – right practice. To me, theright practice of religion is muchmore important than trying to es-pouse what some have insisted isright belief. It requires both becausebelief determines the manner inwhich we live; and practice givesevidence of our beliefs.

No one treats their tourists bet-ter than the folks on PensacolaBeach. Pensacola Beach businessesand residents have raised the barreally high, but I have to tell you thepeople in Walhalla, South Carolinacome close. I went to an auction inWalhalla, and the people there wereso friendly.

I have been to a few auctions inthis country, but this one was quitedifferent. It was very festive, yet, familiar; you felt as if you had walkedinto a friend's living room. There wasa large concession stand which wasessential to the family atmosphere.

It also was essential to the manwho sat to my left. He announced at7:30 p.m. that it was ice cream time. Ithought he was going to run overme. I couldn't get out of his way fastenough. He and his wife were un-usual. He sat and read a book ongardening and only occasionallylooked up. His wife slept throughthe whole thing. How could yousleep through “Do I hear 5,5,5,5,5,who will give me 2,2,2,2?" And thenI wondered why they even came tothis? I soon realized why.

It was the people. I had to askone person where to get my num-ber, and then I asked another man ifI could sit anywhere I wanted to. Hesaid, “Of course,” and to pick themost comfortable chair I could find.I did, and, boy, was I glad. I sat therefor four hours.

While I waited I chatted withyet another man about the proceed-

ings for the night. This is how itstacked up. First the auctioneer soldthe furniture (most of it), then hemixed it with the crystal and jewelrywhich I had no interest in. Then hestopped the auction and said. "It'stime to pick your boxes."

I asked the man behind me,“What do I do?”

He said, "Just pick your boxesof stuff you want and take it up frontto the tables and you have to bidfirst at $5."

I had picked out three boxes. One was a beautiful box from the1930's with gloves, scarves and hatsfrom the 1950's. I won that one. Theother two were boxes full of dollclothes. I won one and lost the other. The one I won had an extra bonus. It had mouse poop in it. I had it onthe floor and was taking the clothesout and noticed little poops. Great! Ithrew the box outside and put theclothes in a container and handwashed them. Well, what do you ex-pect for $5?

I also was the wining bidder ontwo vintage baby buggies - one wasfor dolls, the other one was for kids-both from the 1960's. I think the folksgot a real kick out of me as I left. Yousee I have a Miata and I had to putthe top down in order to get the twobuggies home. They were pointingand laughing and I was laughing, too.

I had so much fun that nightthanks to the nice folks in Walhalla,South Carolina.

Pensacola Beach ElementarySchool students have been im-mersed into a computerized learn-ing environment thanks to a partner-ship between the Parent-TeacherAssociation and the PensacolaBeach Elementary School's board ofdirectors. Promethean ActivBoards, which replace whiteboards and theirancient predecessor, the chalkboard, have been installed in each class-room. The cost sharing project wascompleted at the conclusion ofMarch.

The Promethean ActivBoardwas designed by teachers, for teach-ers to transform the classroom intoa truly interactive learning environ-ment.

The first ActivBoard at theBeach School was installed in Jen-nifer Neal's kindergarten classroomin October 2008.

"The students adapted to it in-stantly. It engages them at many lev-els, keeping their attention muchlonger than any other learning tool,"said Neal.

According to the PrometheanCorporate website, Interactivewhiteboards enable anything thatcan be seen or done on a computerscreen to be projected onto awhiteboard. Sounds simple enough, but seeing it in action is nothingshort of magical.

Daily lessons are projected ontothe large whiteboards stationed atthe front of each classroom. A spe-cial stylus gives students the abilityto digitally write on, or drag-and-drop items across the board.

ActivBoards are equipped withinternet capabilities, so that a meretap of a stylus enables students tofurther research topics via the world-wide web. Videos can be integratedinto the daily curriculum.

"It's all there at our fingertips,"said Neal. "I save my planning, les-sons and notes in my computer. TheActivboard is an extension of mycomputer, but the entire class canview it."

Students in first through fifth

grades have quickly adapted to theuse of the new technology.

"I really like it," said fourthgrader Kylie Finkbone. "It is excit-ing and I want to use it more."

Pensacola Beach ElementarySchool, which was designated aBlue Ribbon School in 2007, is a

Beach School Motivates Students With Classroom Technologyleader in using this technology.

"There are a few schools inEscambia County who haveActivBoards, but our neighbors inGulf Breeze do not yet have these,"said Neal.

Principal Jeff Castleberry ispleased with the cutting edge tech-

nology and the old-fashioned team-work that it took to purchase it.

"I will tell you that the PTAand the Board worked hard toraise the funds to bring this learn-ing tool to the Beach School. Ourkids will never know what it's liketo clean a chalkboard or eraser, but they will be prepared to em-brace the technology of their gen-eration," Castleberry said.

Beach school student Savannah Persky works on the internet ca-pable ActivBoard in Jennifer Neal’s kindergarten class.

Purple has always been thecolor of royalty. When the Spanishlanded on our beach 450 years ago,a purple flag flying would probablyhave made them think of their mon-arch across the sea. Now we oftensee a purple flag flying overPensacola Beach, but it is not a kingor queen that commands our atten-tion, but jellyfish. Of course, otherhazardous marine life may be rec-ognized by the prestigious purpleflag, but it is most always the jelly-fish that are the kings and queens ofour waters.

When the jellyfish are in resi-dence, they provide some upsetfor the local peasants in terms ofstings. Then I see folks with allkinds of strange remedies tryingto care for their wounds. We arefortunate in that we do not havethe really deadly and dangeroustypes of jellyfish frequenting ourshores. The Portuguese man-o-war and the box jellyfish can in-duce fatal stings through power-ful neurotoxins and anaphylacticreactions. If you travel to an areawhere jellyfish are more seriousthan our local variety, heed warn-ings and make sure you or the life-guard facilities have appropriatemedical supplies, or just keep feetfirmly on land.

Here, our jellies are not ex-actly innocuous, but still notoverly concerning under usual cir-cumstances. Their stings are pain-ful and can causes rashes or blis-ters, but generally would not causedeath unless someone had a par-ticular sensitivity. Locals usuallydon't even look to see if the purpleflag is flying, but merely plungein. Tourists even more so. Theyhave awaited their vacation and noflag, even a purple one, will keepthem out of the water. That'swhere the strange remedies comein.

The most common one ismeat tenderizer. Alas, this onlymakes your leg or arm or whatevermore tender….well, really noteven that. There is no reason to

bother carrying meat tenderizerwith you to the beach unless youplan on making sandburgers. Themost concerning so-called remedyfor jellyfish stings is-I'm sure ev-eryone has heard of this one-urine.Now, urine really does not do any-thing good for a jellyfish sting. So, please don't pee on anyone orask any of your friends to pee onyou if you get stuck by a jellyfish.

What can you do? Well, thefirst important thing is to preventany more stings. This means getout of the water and wash thestung area with ocean water. It isimportant to wash off any remain-ing tentacles or stinging cysts withthe same kind of water the jelly-fish lives in. If you use fresh wa-ter to wash the cysts off, they willdischarge, causing more stinging.

The next thing to do is to de-stroy the toxin as much as pos-sible. This is what those other"remedies" claim to do, but don't.To denature the toxin, pour vin-egar on the area. This will dena-ture the toxin and lessen the ex-tent of the burning and itching.Thereafter, you can usually treatthe sting as any other type of der-matitis with some topical anti-itchmedications.

If the sting is extensive, be-comes infected, or is complicatedby breathing problems or otherserious signs or symptoms, thenseek medical attention immedi-ately. So, be sure to take somevinegar with you to the beach, es-pecially if you see the royal purpleflag, and please don't pee on any-one!

It's spring timeand the weather is really heating upthe fishing. Bait fish are all over andwhere there are little ones, there areBIG ones. The Spanish Macs aretearing up the bait around the BeachBridge and will hit just about any-thing you throw at them. Specks areall over the grass beds and liveShrimp or Finger Mullett on a bob-ber will get you one real quick inthe morning or late evening.

Wading is coming into seasonand a white stringray grub on a monoleader always does the trick for me.Just toss it to the grass line andbounce it off the bottom for deadlyresults.

The Big boats are out everydaywith catches of Cobia, Kings and all

sorts of others, so book yourself aride or go with a friend.

Tournament season is in fullswing, so make sure your signed upjust in case.

The waters are yours, so doyourself a favor, Go Fishin'.
