DearFriends,Inthelasteditionofthe augustinianmagazinemybrotherDonaldF.Reilly,O.S.A.,wrote
hislastlettertoyouasPriorProvincialoftheProvinceofSt.ThomasofVillanovaandwiththisWinterEdition,Iamprivilegedtowritemyfirstlettertoyou.MuchhashappenedinourProvincesincelastJune.
OurProvincialChapter,whereallthemembersarecalledtogethereveryfouryearstodiscussourwayoflifetogether,washeldonthecampusofVillanovaUniversity,and,astheConstitutionsoftheOrderexhortus,“friarsgatheredmustdesirethegoodoftheprovincewiththeirwholeheartandstrivetoattainitasfaraspossible.”(Const.316.)Thefriarsworkedforthetenprecedingmonthsinpreparingforthe“disciplinedconversation”thatweexperiencedinJune.Welookedatourspirituality,ourcommunitylife,ourrelationshipwithourbrotherAugustinians,thebodyofChrist,theworld.WebroughtourheartstotheChapterandsharedthemwitheachother.Youwillgetaglimpseofthejoyofbeingtogetherinthesepages.
FromFebruary18th,whenIwaselectedasPriorProvincial,totheChapter,Irequestedthatallthefriarsoftheprovincesubmittomethenamesofmenwhocouldassistmeinthegovernanceoftheprovincebytheirprudentadviceandenergeticwork.YouwillmeettheCounselors,mySecretary,andTreasurerasselectedbythevoteoftheChapterinthisissue.Thesefriarseachhaveuniquegiftsandexperiencesthatareofgreathelpinpromotingourapostolicundertakingsandprovidingforthegoodoftheprovince.
TheweekbeforeIwasinstalledasPriorProvincial,theVeryRev.BernardC.Scianna,O.S.A.,wasinstalledasPriorProvincialoftheMidwesternAugustinians,theProvinceofOurMotherofGoodCounsel.Fr.ReillyandIwereabletoattendFr.Bernie’scelebrationwithourbrothersfromtheMidwest.Fr.BernieandIhavesincetraveledtovisitourbrothersinJapan,tothePhilippinesforourIntermediateGeneralChapterandtoKoreatobewithourKoreanbrothersastheycelebratedtheir25thanniversaryasamission.ThistimespenttogetherwassignificantbecauseboththeVillanovaProvinceandGoodCounselProvincehavevotedtoexploreworkingtogetherinkeyareasofoperation,andourtimetravelingtogethergaveusanopportunitytobondinbrotherhoodasnewProvincialsonanewcourse.
OneofmyfirstactsasPriorProvincialwastoassignanewfriartoSouthAfrica.Whatagracedmomentformetosay“yes”tothisrequest.MyheartwasfilledasitwasthedayIwasaskedtosendforththeAugustinianVolunteersfor2010-2011fortheirmissionstotheprovinceswhereAugustinianswork.Oneevening,whilehavingdinnerwithourvolunteersinNewEngland, Iwasaskinghowtheyweredoingandwhatcouldbesharedatorientationthatwouldhelpthevolunteersintheirtransitioning.Withoutanyhesitationoneofthevolunteerssaid,“MoreshouldbesaidabouttherelationshipofthevolunteersandtheAugustiniancommunities.”Thatvolunteergotit.“Onemind,oneheartintentuponGod.”

OftenLindiwesleptthedayawaysilentlysoIwassurprisedonemorningwhilegivingherabedbathwhensheaskedme ifshecouldhavetheclothtowashherownface.Typicallypatientswhocannotmakeitthroughastandingshowerarebathedintheirbeds–headtotoe.AsIhandedLindiweherwashclothIwassilentlythankfulforhernewfoundstrength.

Forexample,PeruviansreallyloveMichaelJackson.WhenthestudentsIteachattheparochialschoolfoundoutIsharedtheirlovefortheKingofPop(RIP),theyaskedmetochoreographadancefortheannualMother’sDaycelebration.Ofcourse,Isaidyes.Theywantedtodothriller. Ididn’ttakeintoaccountthattheydidn’tunderstandthesongwasaboutzombies.Thekidsrentedasmokemachine,astrobelightandfoundaguytopainttheirfaceslikedeadpeople.Wewerethelastnumber…thegrandfinaleinanauditoriumpackedwith moms. It was a huge success and the kidsweresohappy…Idon’tthinkthemomsevencaredthattheirMother’sDaygiftwastheirchildcomingbackfromthedead.
Soasnottomakethisentryobnoxiouslylong,Iwillconcludewithabriefsummary ofother“yeses”.YestolearninganddancingatraditionalPeruviandanceinfrontofateamofvolunteerdoctorsfromtheU.S.YestoquittingvegetarianismandeatingpigintestinemysecondweekinPeru(whichturnedintoeatinglotsmoremeats…thatIendedupreallyenjoying).Yestogoingtobabyshowersandbirthdaysandsayingyestoparticipatingintheirgames(whichmayormaynothaveconsistedofdressingupasBarney).Eachoftheseexperienceswereuniqueand(asclichédasitsounds)onceinalifetimeopportunities.
IwillmissthebeautifullifeI’velivedinmyyearinChulucanas,butfromitIwilltakesomuch.Aboveall,anadventurousoutlookthatseekstosuckallthejuicelifehastogive.

Herbathwasfinishedandherhairwasbraided.Shetoldmethateventhoughherbodywasnotdoingwell,herheartandherheadwereprotectedbecauseoftheloveinherlife.LovefromherbeautifulfamilyandlovefromJesus.

metohelpherlaydownsayingshewasn’tfeelingwell.Asshenearedthepillowhereyesrolledintothebackofherhead.Herbodygraspingforair,herbreathsshallow.As 7 A.m. turned to 10 A.m. I sat there. IheldherhandandIprayed.
Lindiwe,age40,passedaway.Sheleftbehindafamilywhoadoredher,includingthreebeautifulyoungchildren.
IoftenleavetheAIDSCentreat acrossroadsofheartbreakand discouragement. It is in those moments thatIpauseandthinkaboutwhatprotectsmyheart.
It’stheunspokenlovethatIamsurroundedwithduringbeautifuldaysandmostimportantlyduringharderdays.It’sthedeepfaithandever-presentstrengthintheeyesofmypatientsevenwhentheirpainisintenseandtheirbodiesaregivingup.It’sthelovingsupportofmythreeroommates whose hands support mine in friendship,loveandprayeratthestartandendofeachday.
MyheartisprotectedbyexperiencingfirsthandhowfreelyloveflowsinSouthAfrica.It’sprotectedbywitnessingthedeepfaithofmypatientswho,likeLindiwe,haveencouragedmystrongbeliefinsomethingbiggerthanmyself.

ProvincialChaptersarestillplaceswhereproposalsareputforward.LastJune,onthecampusofVillanovaUniversity,friarsfromallovertheworldreturnedforthecelebrationofthe2010OrdinaryProvincialChapter.Solemnlyprofessedfriarswhoareascribedtotheprovincearechargedtoattend,providedisciplineddiscussion,formproposalsforprograms,and vote on those programs.
Daysofthechapterareplannedforprayer,sacredmusic,presentations,groupdiscussions,opencommentsfromfriars,meals—andmoreprayerandsacredmusic.Inthemiddleofthechapter,there-electedornewly-electedPriorProvincialisinstalled.Onsubsequentdays,friarsvoteforthenewSecretary,Treasurer,Counselorsandthenewprograms.
Amidprayersforthesuccessofthechapterandthecalltobemindfulofthecourageandvisionoffriarspast,themembersofthechapterformulatedalmostadozenproposals.Allachievedamajorityofthevoteandallwereadoptedtobepartofthe“ProgramoftheProvince.”

Intheopeningmomentsofthe2010OrdinaryProvincialChapter,Fr.AnthonyM.Genovese,O.S.A.,Provincial-Elect,addressedthefriars:“Aswegather,westandonholyground.MindfulofourhistoryweareawareofthecourageandvisionofthefriarsofthepastwhohavecreatedthisProvince.”
Fr.Mickey’swordsaboutthefriarsofthepastaretrulysignificantwhenyourealizea“chapter”isactuallyaneventthatisregulatedbyConstitutionsthattraceitsrootsbacksome700years!
TheearliestknownConstitutionscame34yearsafterthefoundingoftheOrder,whenfriarsatthe1290chapter,heldatRatisbon,Germany(nowRegensburg)votedtoadopttheRatisbonConstitutions.It is thought that Constitutions were createdatthattimetoregulateAugustinianhouses,outoffeartheOrderwouldbe suppressedbythePopeforlackoforganization.
TheConstitutionsoftheOrderunderwentvariousrevisionsoverthecenturies,mostrecentlyin1968aftertheSecondVaticanCouncil,andagainin2008,afterthepublicationoftheCodeofCanonLaw.
The“ActsoftheChapter”istheofficialdocumentthatrecordsthecomments,proposalsandthefinaladopted“Program oftheProvince.”
OnefamouschapterproposalwasrecordedinHeidelberg,GermanyinApril1518,whenMartinLuther,O.S.A.,defendedhisthesisonthepracticeofindulgences.NowreferredtoastheHeidelbergDisputation,itisthisthesis,defendedinthischapter,whichultimatelyledtotheReformation.

andmoreeffectiveAugustinianpresenceinNorthAmericathroughpartialFederation.TheproposalseekstoexploreincreasedcollaborationintheareasofMissions(ForeignandDomestic);Communications;DevelopmentforCommonMinistries;JusticeandPeace;andNewInitiativesinMinistries.Thefriarsadoptedthisproposaltodomoreanddoitbetter.VocationsandFormation,alreadyInter-ProvincialMinistries,willcontinuetobehandledinthesameway.
TheProvinceofOurMotherofGoodCounselintheMidwestandtheProvinceofSt.ThomasofVillanovaintheEast,haveapprovedmovingforwardwiththisFederationplan.StatutestodefineithavebeenpreparedbytherespectivePriorProvincialsforapprovalbythePriorGeneralandhisCouncil—asspecifiedinConstitutions #271c. These statutes have beenpreparedandwillbesubmittedforapprovalinFebruary2011.
TheActsofthe2010chapternowjoinActsofallotherchaptersinAugustinianhistory.Theadopted“ProgramoftheProvince,”willdrivetheworkofthePriorProvincialandhisCouncilforthenextfouryears.In2012,anIntermediateProvincialChapterwillbeheldtobenchmarktheprogressmadeontheprogramsandmakeadjustmentstoachievetheprograms as needed.

There’snodenyingthatthefootageoftheSouthAfricanMissionsinthe VisionariesPublicTelevisiondocumentary,“God’sFootSoldiers,”isextremelytouching.Thefactthat20percentoftheZuluchildrenwhoattendSt.Leo’sschoolareHIVpositiveisdevastating.Themomentwhen10-yearoldNelisiweZondetellsthestoryofhermotherdyingfromAIDSandwhatitmeansforhertogotoSt.Leo’sschoolishardtogetthroughwithouttears.Butthenyousay,waitaminute.Thispoisedten-yearold,whoislivinginanimpoverishedpartofSouthAfricawhereZuluisthepredominantlanguage,justtoldherstorytousinnear-perfectEnglish!Thisisamomentoftriumph.Thisisareal-lifeexampleofwhatformstheunderlyingsubtextof“God’sFootSoldiers”—thecollaborationofAugustinianswithcommittedlaystaff,AugustinianVolunteersandbenefactors,andthehopethatitbringstoothers.

Theirtenoriscompassionateandyetchallenging—determinedtotellthestory,tohelpandgethelpfromothers.
Fr.TonyandBrianareateamatthetopoftheMissionsOfficethatdrivestheeducationandfundraisingworkoftheAugustinianMissions.TheyareanimpressiveexampleofaneffectivelayandAugustiniancollaborationfortheProvinceofSt.ThomasofVillanova.
Formanyyears,upuntilJanuary,2009,theMissionsOfficewasheadedbyasolefriar.Inthefallof2008,Brian,whowasservinginSouthAfricaasanAugustinianVolunteer,washavingaverypowerfulexperienceanddidnotwanttohaveadisconnectfromitwhenhisyearended.Coincidentally,theAugustinianFriarswerelookingtoexpandtheEducationalpieceoftheMissionsandBrianwasofferedthejobstartinginJanuaryof2009.
“Brianisverygoodwithtechnology,averygoodspeaker,hashadexperienceasanAugustinianVolunteerintheU.S.andSouthAfrica,andisabletospeakaboutthatineducationalprogramsandthemissions.He’sverydedicatedtothemissions,dedicated to the Augustinians. He does asmuchasIdo.He’sasmuchapartofit asIam.It’sreallyjustaco-sharing.”
Fr.TonygothisfirstexperiencewithMissionworkin1987whenhewasaskedtogotoPerutofillinforfriarswhoneededtocomebacktotheU.S.forhealthreasons.“Youcan’tworkintheMissionsandnotbechanged,”saidFr.TonyabouthisexperienceinPeru.Andindeed,Fr.Tonystayedcloselyconnected
totheMissionsovertheyearsasMissionsProcurator,asTreasureroftheProvinceandworkingonweekendsduringthepast18summersdoingMissionAppeals.
Fr.TonyhasaspecialconnectiontoSouthAfricabecausehespentoverfouryearslivingon-and-offintheAugustinianMissioninSouthAfricaandwasTreasureroftheProvinceatthetimetheAugustinianswereaskedtotakeonaMissioninSouthAfrica:
“Fourteenyearsago,whenwewereaskedtoconsidertakingaMissioninSouthAfrica,Fr.JackDeegan,(thenPriorProvincialoftheProvinceofSt.ThomasofVillanova)andIwenttoSouthAfrica,tomeetwithWilfredCardinalNapier,O.F.M.,ArchbishopofDurban,toseewhattypeofworkhemightwantustotakeon.Wewerethinkingwhatkind ofmanpower,parishesorschoolswouldhe want and wondering how much it wouldcost.”

OneofthereasonsBriancanspeaksoknowledgeablyabouttheMissionsisbecauseBrianwasanAugustinianVolunteerfortwoyears:in2006-07intheBronx,NY;andbeginninginJanuary2008,Brian went to serve at the Augustinian MissionsinDurban,SouthAfrica.HeworkedatSt.Theresa’sPrimarySchool,St.Theresa’sBoysHomeandattheRespiteUnitfortheHillcrestAIDSCentre.Theexperiencewasoneofthemostimportantyearsofhislife:
“ThefriarsandthevolunteersworksidebysideandsharetheAugustiniancharismofcommunity.Fr.FrankDoyle(PastorofOurLadyofKloofandthethreeZuluMissionchurchesinSouthAfrica)hadanopendoorpolicywheretheVolunteerssharedinthecommoncommunity.Itwasneverusandthem;itwasveryinclusive.InmanywaysVolunteersbecomeanextensionofthefriars.”
IfBrianhastouseonewordtodescribethetraitsofanAugustinianVolunteer it’s perseverance:
“Encounteringsituationsofextremepoverty,encounteringsituationsofdeathanddyingonaveryregularbasis,takealargeemotionalbutalsophysicaltollona person. And having to encounter that whilebeingcompletelyremovedfromyourcomfortzoneandyourownsupportsystemisvery,verychallenging.OneofthegiftsthatisgiventotheVolunteersislivingincommunitywithothervolunteersandcreatingthisnewsupportsystem.”
“Youdon’tgetthedaily,monthlyorevenannualfeelingofOh, i can see i’m really making a difference here. Being an Augustinian Volunteerismuchmoreabouttherelationshipsthatyoubuildandaboutcreatingchangeinyourownheartandyourownlifeandhopingthatyou’vemadesomesortofimpactintheheartsandmindsofothers.”
InspeakingabouttheAugustinianVolunteersseenin“God’sFootSoldiers”Fr.Tonysays:
“TheVolunteersteachverywellintheschools,theyworkwellintherespiteunits
andintheorphanage.ButwhenyouseethewholehistoryofApartheid,youseewhattheVolunteersareallabout.Theyaretheretobuildthebridges,tobreakdownthestereotypes,andtolivetheGospelintheirownway.That’sbytouchingpeople,especiallythereintheirdeepesthurts.AndthatisApartheid,thedivisionbyrace.Theyshowwhiteswhatwe’recalledtobeandtheyshowtheZuluswhatitcanbe.That’sthebigimpact.”

ForFr.TonyandBrian,abigpartoftheirroleistoraisethefundstosupporttheMissionsinvariousways.ThebulkofthefundstheyraisecomethroughlaysupportoftheMissionAppeals.Fr.Tony,Brian,AugustinianFriarsandAugustinianVolunteersspendweekendsduringthesummertravelingaroundthecountrytospeaktocongregationsabouttheAugustinian missions.
TheywriteanddistributeaquarterlyMissionsNewsletterandtheyreceivedonationsforjewelryandornamentsmadebyZulus,MissionChristmasgiftcardsandmissions mass cards.
TheAugustinianDevelopmentCouncil,alaygroupofsuccessful,professionalbusinesspeople,withitsChairman,CharlesP.Connolly,Jr.,givetime,talentandtreasurebyleadingTheAugustinianFund,nowenteringitsfifthyear.Initsfouryearsofexistence,theAugustinianFundhasraised$4,017,791,ofwhich$1,727,650(43%)hasbeengiveninsupportoftheMissionsinJapan,PeruandSouthAfrica.
AsFr.Tonyseesit,“Noneofthiscouldhappenwithoutthedonors.Wecouldn’tfeedthechildren.Wecouldn’tbuildanewchurch.Theyhavemadeatremendousdifference.Theyhavenoideahowmuchofadifferencetheyhavemade.Takeasmallthinglikethefruitprogram.Thatwasthefirstfoodthechildrenreceivedoutsideofriceandbeans.Andtheteachers,afteracoupleofmonths,talkedabouthowtheycouldseeadifferenceinthekidsinafternoons
aftertheygetfruit,becausetheyhavesomenutrients.They’renotfallingasleepinclass.They’remorealiveandtheyarelearningbetter.Childrencannotlearnwithoutfood,andtheydidn’thaveit.Theyhavefoodnowbecauseofourdonors.Theycanlearn,andtheirlivescanchange.Withouteducation,there’snohope.Youcanhaveaschool,butifthekidscan’tlearninit,whatgoodarethebuildings?Food,supplies,desks,blackboards,thingslikethat,it’sallduetothedonors.”
BrianisimpressedbythebenefactorsoftheMissionsfortheircommitment:
“Fr.DickAppiciwastheMissiondirectorforsuchalongtimeandsomanyofoursupporterscametobesupportersthroughtheirpersonalrelationshipswithFr.Appici.Andwithhispassing,I’vebeencontinuallybuoyedbythefactthatalotofthosedonorscontinuetobeverygenerousintheirgifts tothemissions,forthesakeofthelegacy ofFr.Appici,andjustbecausetheirownpersonalcompassionandpersonalcommitmenttotheMissionshaslastedbeyondthelifeofFr.Appicihimself.”
where do we go from here? In“God’sFootSoldiers,”Augustinian
VolunteerRebeccaLittletellsusabouttheZuluword“ubuntu,”whichmeans“Iambecauseweare.”It’sabeautifulword. Awordwedon’thaveanequivalentforinEnglish.AwordthatpoignantlyexpressestherelationshipbetweentheAugustinianMissionsandtheircollaboratorsoflaystaff,layvolunteersandlaybenefactors.
ForBrian,thebiggestthingisjustcontinuingtheworkthat’shappening:
“Workingintheunderdevelopedworldisapatient,patientprocess.Creatingchangegloballyisapatientprocess.Itdoesn’thappenovernight.Itdoesn’thappenquickly.Ittakesalongtimeandalongcommitment.Iwanttoseethemissionsexhibitthatsenseofpatientcommitment,regardlessofthetimetable.”
ToBrian,it’saveryimportantaspectofvolunteerprogramsthatthere’sacontinuityofvolunteers.Sovolunteersarenotsingularintheirefforts,butareoneinachainofvolunteers,stretchingbackintothepastandmovingintothefuture:
“Forexample,inmyworkatSt.Theresa’sorphanage:it’schallengingbecausehereyouarecomingtomakeadifference,wantingtohelpthelivesoftheseyoungkids,whohaven’thadconsistentrolemodelsintheirlives.You’rebuildingstrongrelationships,knowingfullwellthatattheendoftheyear

Unlimited, inc., a company involved in the renewable energy field.
Mr. Halloran is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Civil Engineering. after
graduating, he entered the augustinian Seminary for four years and earned an
M.a. in theology.
Mr. Halloran founded Halloran Philanthropies in 2007 with the
belief that business is one of the most powerful drivers of social change.

Ireallyenjoyedtheexperience.Wewereagoodgroup.ImetPaulMorrissey,MilesGlasglow,RaySchanley,RayJackson,ShawnTracy,BillDolan,andJimMcCartney.Fr.RayJacksonwasrealcharacterandbecameaveryclosefriend.Helaterbecameourfamilypriest;hebaptizedourchildren.Imadealotofgoodfriends,andhavealotofwonderfulmemories,butIdecideditwasn’tagoodfitforthelongtermforme.

Then,throughmybrother,Igotintotheoilrefiningbusiness.In1975ItookoverAmericanRefiningGroupandbecametheCEOandreallylearnedtheoilbusiness.EventuallyIpurchasedtherefineryinBradford,PA.In1980Istartedtogetintothewindbusiness;Iwasoneofthefoundersofwindenergy.Iamnowintoadiversityofenergybusinesses:oilrefining,oilandnaturalgasproduction,wind,solar,geothermal,fuelcells,biomass,andallkindsofthings.Then,aboutfouryearsagoIgotinterestedinphilanthropy.IhiredAnthonyCarr,whowasalsointhenovitiatewithmebackin1961;hewasretiringastheCEOofahospitalinFresno,CAsoIofferedhimajobasExecutiveDirectorofHalloranPhilanthropies.WehaveaboutfourorfivestaffmembersindifferentpartsoftheUnitedStatesandtheworld.

OnMay2,2010,300peoplegatheredtohonorFr.TomDwyerashepreparedtoretiretotheU.S.after52yearsinFukuoka,Nagasaki,TokyoandNagoya.Thegroup,manyofwhommetFr.Tomduringhis26yearsasprincipaloftheAugustiniankindergartenprograminFukuoka,preparedafestiveandlovingevent to honor his service.
