LSA MEMBER OF THE MONTH — JENIFER TRUHN
Several months ago Jenifer Truhn took over as education co-ordinator to fill the shoes of Byron Lutes. She worked as an Ac-countant Manager for a glass manufacturer in Wixom, Michigan. The first two years that she worked in Wixom, Jenifer also at-tended Oakland Community College and earned a Liberal Arts As-sociate's Degree. She also attended Cleary College and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. Her job was to sell glass doors to retail companies in packages with hardware. After twenty years at the Door Company, Jenifer decided to
look for another job so she could use her degrees. She found the Clark Company on Monster.com and sent in her resume`. She was interviewed and then hired as Ac-counting Manager in 2015. Her main job is to build relationships and sales through-out Michigan, in Toledo, Ohio and northern Indiana. Jenifer attended an LSA meeting in the spring of 2015 and decided to become a member and filled a much-needed position as Education Coordinator. Jenifer grew up in Walled Lake, Michigan and now lives in West Bloomfield. She has been married to Dan Truhn for eighteen years. Jenifer stated: “I have two beautiful children – Emilee, 16, and Jacob, 6. I enjoy reading, playing games, spend-ing time with my family and Jazzer-cise.” Welcome to LSA, Jennifer! — by Al Moebus, CPLby Al Moebus, CPLby Al Moebus, CPLby Al Moebus, CPL

December 2015....Last Month Was a Duzie! Beyond the fabulous festive Christmas Holiday party (see more pictures on page 4 in this newsletter), John Bock-ert from Bockert & Associates did a fantastic job with a hands on in-service for the at-tending members of the LSA at the December meeting. Everyone had the opportunity to physically layout a typical electric strike with all its components. The best part was that every attending LSA member was able to keep the brand new products then return to their jobs with these actual products to use and sell for their next electric strike install. The value of this Christ-mas gift was well over $200.00. The two-fold purpose of this great deal was to continue the LSA education mission plus encourage members to make attending the LSA meetings their priority. As a side note, EVERY member of LSA benefits well beyond their dues. Anyone who does not feel they have gained more than they have invested, the LSA will gladly refund their dues. To date, no one has ever done so, which speaks vol-umes for this, THEIR association.

“ JOHN’ S RANDOM THOUGHTS” - ALWAYS FOCUSED! JOHN HUBEL, CML, ICML, M.ED.
An Unsolicited Endorsement A special thank you goes out to Beverly Blumke (586-286-4229) who catered the LSA Christmas Holiday dinner. She has done so over the years for both the LSA and MMLA/MAPL. Her pricing is below market and she takes pride in making sure every-thing is just right. Consider Bev for YOUR next event. A Shout-Out The LSA made sure everyone had a great time at the December meeting. Several took part in its success by subsidizing expenses. These fine companies include: Keedex, Golling Chrysler, Bockert & Associates, and a few anonymous LSA members. http://www.gollingchryslerjeepdodge.com/commercial.htm http://www.bockert-inc.com/ www.keedex.com Were YOU There? You can be. Check out the Business Card file at the end of this LSA newsletter. If your card does not appear there, you’re miss-ing out. Come to the January LSA meeting and your card can be amongst the best. This newsletter is being viewed by MANY. We are proud of our members and the LSA is giving you the opportunity to be noticed by others locally as well as around the globe. http://www.LSAmichigan.org/Newsletters/January2016-LSA.pdf IDN Trade Show Reserve March 16-19, 2015 for the IDN-Hardware Sales Trade Show. This trade show will be held locally in Novi, Michigan. There will also be a PRP offered during that event. Study up and plan to partake. Gene Simon After decades of giving to the locksmith industry, our dear friend and associate Gene Simon has decided to retire. Gene has talked about retirement from his most recent position as Manufacturer Representative for Jet, LAB, and Major for some time but his pas-sion for his product lines and his passion for the locksmith industry kept him from doing so, until now. Gene comes from a family of locksmiths with impeccable integrity and his character has been consistent with the Simon lineage. All of the Simons have given back to the industry in so many ways, and then some. We will particularly miss Gene’s presence for the time being and we honor him for making his family first priority. Maita, Gene’s wife, is typically found at Gene’s side giving her entire support and deserves equal congratulations. We welcome Gene’s visits anytime he finds himself in the Detroit area. If there are any new lock-smith in our readership range seeking wise business council or looking for a person to model, we are absolutely certain Gene would be more than willing to lend his listening ear and offer valuable insights. Have You Reordered? This is simply a little nudge and maybe a “rub-it-in” moment. If you are soliciting business you should have given out at least a hundred of business cards since our last LSA meeting. If you haven’t, then you are not acting on the very principles of business growth 101. If you’re running low on cards, it’s time to reorder more business cards. One company we have found that prints business cards very inexpensively is www.4PrintSolutions.com. Ordering other items to promote your business can be easily ob-tained from our own LSA partner and friends, Professional Business Products (PBP) www.pbp2000.com. Prizes & New Products! There are some pretty nice door prizes for January. One of them Jim Hague at Golling Chrysler Ram, will be bringing in. He described it in December. Hint: Made by Bosch, well built, and very useful. Also, Phil from IDN will be demonstrating a new Master Lock Company product. SEE YOU AT THE LSA MEETING!!!

This ‘hands-on’ class explores “high security” cylinders,” primarily from North America, that the locksmith may likely encounter in the field. Some of these products include: ASSA, Medeco, Sargent, Kaba, Yale, Corbin Russwin, Emhart, Schlage, Abloy, BEST, and others. Design, construction, operation and distribution will be covered thoroughly. Students will recognize the difference between “high se-curity” and “key control”, as well as understand patent information and how to correctly service these domestic high security cylinders. → PRP Testing: The information presented in this full-day class will be useful in preparing for the ALOA PRP section L-08 and other PRP sections with similar/crossover content. →→→→ Prerequisite: The student should have a basic understanding and experience combinating and servicing conventional cylinders. →→→→ LAB FEE: A $20 Lab Fee (included in costs below) will be for the Student Manual (a 77-page assemblage) that is confidential and pro-prietary information specifically compiled to be used in class and which the student will retain afterwards. →→→→ PRP: Those who pay the additional testing fee for the elective test may take PRP Section L-08 at the end of the class, if offered.

CLASS ENROLLMENT PROCEDURES
PRESIDENTIAL PENNINGS—JEREMY AMEEN, CML
Let me start by saying “Happy New Year!” Also, thank you to those who came out to our December Holiday Meeting. If you couldn’t make it, you sure missed out. Every member in attendance walked out with a Trine elec-tric strike, power supply, and push button, all compliments of LSA. We cer-tainly appreciate all of our members and those who come to the meetings and give their input. If you aren’t coming to the monthly meetings, we miss you, and your missing out! Thanks to John Bockert for teaching us about installing and hooking up electric strikes. This was a abreviated hands on informative class! I would also like to thank all those who helped make the evening a success. We also had a catered dinner, which was delicious as usual.
With the New Year being fresh upon us, take some time to make a few business goals. I am sure everyone has made new years resolu-tions, but lets add some goals to this list. Did you reach your goals last year? Where do you want to be a year from now? Where do you want to focus on your business this year? Do you want to grow and expand, or just stay where you are? Do you need to increase your bottom line? Do you need to advance in tech-nology? All of these are thought provoking questions that I hope you will take a few mo-ments to ponder. We will be discussing some of these questions at our next meeting. I hope to see you all there!

RAY’S WAYS — “BURGLARIES & SOLUTIONS” -BY RAY S INAI, CML LSA N EWSLETTER EDITOR
I hope you all had a marvelous holiday season and you are ready to return to work in this New Year in the locksmith industry. Unfortunately it seems, prior to the holiday season, the burglary rate does seem to increase. We recently responded to some break-in’s from customers in our area. The two burglaries that come to mind were both commercial clients, and , they both involved the perpetrators breaking cylin-drical lever locks to gain entry. The first was a restaurant that viewed the entire forced entry via security camera. Although I did
not see the video, I was told that the burglar used his bare hands, no tools, to force the lockset. The second break-in was a larger burglary involving a number of doors that were again forced open. Our answer to the problem; clutched cylindrical lever locks and latch guards. Remember, fire codes will not always allow you to add a deadbolt to a door. If it is a fire rated opening or a designated exit door, it can only be one motion to exit. I had not previously been stocking clutched levers, though I will from now on. Since our “offshore” manufacturers are providing these locksets at a reasonable price, I feel that I can now offer them to my customers. Years ago, these clutched levers were in my opinion, out of the price range for most of my customers and definitely too expensive to stock. I am envi-sioning the clutched levers to eventually replace the standard cylindrical levers that I now stock.
Speaking of changes, another manufacturer, GMS, is offering Schlage keyway large format cores. I am only aware of the LFIC in the standard “C” keyway at this time. Check with your sup-plier, as they are quite a savings over the original. After the holidays business can slow down. The weather usually is considerably colder and the customers may prefer that you didn’t work on their doors at this time. If you are not offering these products now, you may want to reconsider; door weatherstripping, door closers, continuous hinges, drip edges and thresholds - these are all products available at our local suppliers and will be well re-ceived in the cold weather by your customers. Lastly, if you haven’t upgraded your cell phone in a while or haven’t visited your airtime pro-vider, I suggest a visit. Plans have changed and prices have changed, so you may realize some sig-nificant savings. Even if you are not eligible for an upgrade, check out the new technology available to assist us in business. Wishing you all a prosperous and healthy New Year!
- Respectfully Submitted, Ray Sinai, CML

Count the Cost!
Happy New Year!!! As we approach another year it is a time to reevaluate and reflect on the past year and look forward to the future. After being in business for over 20 years there are certain jobs that I choose to accept and others that I choose not to take on. Just recently I decided to take on a job that I probably should have never taken on. The job was to install three large bi-fold doors. All the doors were 8 feet tall and two were 6 feet wide and one was 8 foot wide. With the help of a carpenter the total job took us 16 hours. Murphy’s law kicked in at every part of the job. What could go wrong did go wrong. For starters all the floors and walls were unlevel. The doors had to be cut and we had to drill through ceramic tile. In addition to that we had to carry the heavy particle board doors up a flight of stairs. To top it off we had to frame in the doors. Some of the obstacles were ex-pected and some were not. I did learn a few things from this job. #1: When order-ing specialty doors, order the exact size not what is in stock. It may cost you and the customer more but it will save you a lot of headaches. #2: Make sure you have the right tools for the job. #3: Do as much prep work as possible before you get to the job. #4: Certain jobs are just not worth doing because they are so time consum-ing. The job took so long because we did a lot of retrofitting on the job and we came across a lot of unexpected obstacles. Overall I did not loose money I broke even and the customer was happy. My best advice to you when taking on difficult jobs is to do your homework and charge accordingly. Sometimes by trying to save the customer money we hurt ourselves. This is one of those jobs where I would have to say “Never Again.”
