Oriental BandBy Gil Puckett

The Oriental Band is slowly but surely settling into its new band room. Work is going slow but thanks to Noble’s George Younger and Jack Diehl, members and visitors can see some of the history of the Oriental Band displayed on the wall along with several awards. We want to thank both of them for the time and effort they have spent. Please come by our band room to see some of the pictures and learn a bit more about joining the band at the same time. We meet every Monday night at 8:00.

Events for the month of October are few but always special. On October 3rd, the Oriental Band is to participate in the annual Harvest Homecoming Parade in New Albany, Indiana. The parade starts at 11:30 AM and we look forward to seeing the crowds. Our Genie Earl Arnett and the rest of the Oriental Band work very hard and are crowd pleasers wherever they go.

On October 30th, we will host the annual Halloween Bash during the Friday night Dinner. Come dressed up in your favorite costume and join in the fun. Cash prizes are awarded for best dressed. There will also be a table with items available to bid on so come on out and join us. We appreciate your support.

Till next time.

The Love of God

A young man was heard to utter, “What should I do to be saved?” Freemasonry teaches us that the response is: “Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, with all thy mind and all thy strength, and thy neighbor as thyself. This do and thou shall be saved.”

Whatever sea of misfortune may overwhelm us, if we have practiced the virtues and studied the philosophy inculcated by the words in the teachings of Freemasonry, we shall still find consolation and be able to

bear patiently the storms of evil fortune should such storms befall us. The virtues and teachings shall give us strength to bear and suffer beyond what a mere stoic possesses, and shall keep us from repinings and despair; for the Universe shall not be dark to us, nor life without an object. The duties of life, which are more than life, shall still remain to be done, and the love of God shall still continue to shine around us more brilliant that the sun.

Funsters- C.L. Lane, Secretary

I would like to say that, I hope everyone had a super summertime and that everyone enjoyed themselves whatever they went or did. And I’m glad everyone made it bake safe and sound.

There was so many activities throughout the summertime for the Kosair Funsters. We stayed busy alike some of the other units and clubs.

Robert Hart had his crew busy with the car raffle travel in many miles for Kosair Charities. The Funsters went in all directions, from the South to Cave City, to the North and many other roads for parades to bring smiles to all ages of people.

It seems that there is a parade or event that they need Funsters. We receive so many requests for the Funsters we have to turn some of them down. If we had more Funsters, then we could participate in more activities.

But! We have so many that has been sick or I’ll that they can’t

attend. But! I know deep in there heart they would rather be there instead of at home or the hospital getting better. I hope the ones that are sick get better because so many people are asking about and for you.Just get get better so you can get back out there and entertain the people who love and miss you.

The cake sales are getting better with each night. More people are coming out for Friday night dinners and the Theme nights are going over very well.

I would like to say thank you for the Funsters that have gone out of their way to participate in the parades, Gilda’s Club, cake sales, and more activities.

The time has come to get ready for some upcoming events like, Kosair Charities at the zoo, and all the Christmas Parties. We need as many Funsters as we can get for these events. If you haven’t been to one of these events, you’ve missed out on something special.

I will fill you in on what happen at the SASA convention in the next article of the Kolums. As of right now, Robert “Lucky” Wilson will be installed as the President of the clowns for the upcoming year. Congratulations Lucky, well deserved.

For you new Nobles, why not come to one of our meetings and see what we are all about, you never know, you might want to join the best Unit there is at Kosair. Even if you don’t know

how or what to wear, there are enough senior Funsters to assist you in picking out your outfit and putting on make-up. When you put your outfit on, you are totally someone different, that you didn’t know that was inside of you.

We meet on the 4th Monday of the month at 7:30 PM following the Unit Directors Meeting. And for you new Nobles, you are invited to attend The Unit Directors meeting anytime.

Well! It’s time to for me to go and find something interesting to do or get into but you know us Clowns, we aren’t mischievous, we are entertaining and interesting.

Have a good day and God Bless you all for what you are doing for the kids.

The Boat Club’s Ship just keeps on sailing – it doesn’t seem to take anchor anywhere, just fun and fellowship for all. We had a wonderful First Mates Dinner at the Etheridge Camp on the river on Sunday September 13th. First Mates Dinner is where the men wait on the ladies and serve them a meal of steaks, baked potatoes, green beans and other goodies that everyone brings……… Mmmm…...Good.

Friday, October 2nd, will be the October Boat Club meeting and the last cake night, of the year, another time to get the “white thumbs” working, good time for fall desserts, apple, carmel and pumpkin, my mouth is watering just thinking about it! It is also Flu Shot night so we will need lots of desserts.

On October 3rd, we will start the fall season off with our monthly dinner at Huber’s, in beautiful Starlight, Indiana. This is always a fun way to spend a Saturday evening, enjoying the ride up through the hills, eating ham, fried chicken, wonderful vegetables and delicious desserts, as well as feeding the ducks and looking at the beautiful foliage. Time is 4:00 p.m. eating at 5:00 p.m.

October 17th, will be the Commodore’s Ball for Kent and Sherry Gott, featuring the band Mid-Life Crisis. It is looking like a fabulous and fun event. Tickets are $20 a couple and $60 for a table of eight. Tickets call Joey or Donna Etheridge at 426-4969 or Kent or Sherry Gott at 964-9395.

The November outing will be on Saturday, November 7th at Bristol 42, in the side dining room, be on the lookout for more information at a later date.

Then looking ahead – it will be time for our Christmas Party on December 19th, more Merry times to look forward to.

The Children’s Bill of Rights

We hold these truths to be self-evident:

That each newborn infant is the most perfect and helpless of all of the creation;

That each newborn is as individual as the stars of our universe;

That each newborn has the inalienable right to be born wanted, loved and protected; and while growing to maturity within and without the womb that every measure possible, as is known, be undertaken to afford the very best environment, nutrition and opportunity for growth and development;

That proper shelter, nutrition, clothes, education and health measures be provided each child to assure that each, with maturity, can assume the full responsibilities of adulthood and citizenship;

That the personhood of each child be fully appreciated and that each be informed of all matters including health as they grow in intellect and in capability; and that they learn to be involved, as maturity allows, and to participate in all decisions concerning their well-being;

That when and if correction is deemed necessary it will be applied with the greatest of respect and care and without mental or physical abuse;

That we shall as a society make every effort to establish for the children of today a firmer footing than we have ourselves enjoyed in all ways;

That we have witnessed from the very mistakes of nature much that has greatly benefited all of mankind and that infants and children with birth defects shall be our responsibility to rear to the fullest potential possible that they, too, shall share the rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness which is their birthright;

And that we fully realize that the level of civilization attained by any society will be determined by the attention it has paid to the welfare of its infants and children.

Therefore, in full awareness of these truths, we vow upon our honor and all we hold to be sacred to do our very best to bring about a better world for those who succeed us in order to repay our predecessors for our own gift of life.

TRANSPORTATION UNITby C. R. Hines, Unit Secretary

Some years ago we started transporting children (who are under the medical care of other Shrines) from Louisville Standiford Field to the Shrine Cincinnati Burn Hospital. The reason being, Southwest Airlines offers free tickets to handicapped children needing transportation to out of state medical facilities. This free service is called *“Southwest Airlines Medical Transportation Grant Program”. There is only one flaw, Southwest does not fly into the Greater Cincinnati airport and this is where we help. We supply the transportation between Louisville and Cincinnati. Some of the Shrines we have assisted are located in Biloxi, Kansas City, Greenville SC, Topeka, Omaha and Atlanta.

In 2015 Southwest Airlines will provide, to handicapped children, over 3.2 million dollars in free transportation nationwide. There is a web site where you can learn more; use Google and type in the above *Southwest address. Plus there are several more sites that will appear that pertain to the same thing.

One of the things you hear constantly from the mass media concerning large corporations is ‘corporate

greed’; nothing about corporate generosity. Well we (the Transportation Unit) applaud Southwest Airlines for their 3.2 million dollars of generosity. This represents approximately 10,000 free tickets.In the July-August issue of the Scottish Rite magazine “Voice” it listed the names of the latest members to receive Scottish Rite honorary degrees. Our newest member of the Transportation Unit, Samuel Neal Gabehart, is now an honorary KCCH. We congratulate you Neal on your hard-work and dedication to obtain this honor.

As to Transportation trips during the July 15th through August 18th time frame we had 14 trips and drove 4043 miles. That’s an average of 289 miles per trip. The longest trip being 366 miles and the shortest being 225 miles.

And with schools being back in session watch out for those school zones and yellow buses. Several years ago an acquaintance of mine got nailed for speeding in a school zone and, as he rudely discovered, it ain’t cheap ($$$).
