Living by the tenets of the institution, the University celebrated more than a century and a decade of quality service and relevant educational opportunities on its 111th Foundation Day, 13 February. The wreath-laying ceremony held in front of the Don Severino de las Alas monument marked the official start of the two-day celebration. The first day was allotted for the university- wide activities while the Revisiting the vision CvSU celebrates 111th Foundation Day second day (Valentine’s Day), was a simultaneous celebration of the different colleges. Dr. Hernando D. Robles congratulated the whole CvSU community for being able to reach such milestone. With the theme, “CvSU at 111: Transformation to a Global University 2020”, guest speaker Hon. Alex B. Brillantes, Jr., CHED Commissioner, emphasized the importance of revisiting Singers reveal their talent ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’ brought to CvSU It was an afternoon of talent and fun! With costumes and props, chosen faculty and staff of the University showcased their talents and imitated local and international famous singers. A total of 18 participants battled for the Top Five in the CvSU’s version of ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’, as part of the Faculty and Employees’ Hours held at the University Quadrangle. With great surprise and admiration, Mr. Romeo Buhay, from the Security Services, won P10,000 as first prize after imitating Mariah Carey’s, I’ll be There. On second place was Armand Aton of Imus Campus, who received P8,000 for performing, Proud Mary by Tina Turner. Meanwhile, Arianne May Cruzada of CEd, sang Dear Future Husband by Megan Trainor and received P6,000 as cash prize. On the fourth and fifth place were Maro Cyrus P. Mercado of Carmona Campus and Armin Arañas of Tanza Campus, who imitated Lady Gaga and Vice Ganda, respectively. Other contestants were copycats of Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Adam Levine, Michael Jackson, Yeng Constantino, Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift, Elizabeth Ramsey, Celine Dion, Chokoleyt, Adele and Richard Yap. Two members of the CvSU Community also won P2,500 each for being Britney Spears and Harry Potter look-a-like. The host, Prof. Allan Robert C. Solis, also entertained the crowd as he did an opening number of Boy George’s, Karma Chameleon. Faculty Association President, Prof. Noel A. Sedigo, also facilitated the program. Dr. Adolfo C. Manuel, Dr. Ma. Agnes P. Nuestro and Mr. Ernesto Bocalan, served as judges for the said event. Faculty and staff all went home with smiles and laughter brought by the said event. He stressed on the essence of competing with fellow universities and those of the South East Asian nations to be able to develop global potentials. He also mentioned that CvSU can become competitive not just because of the leaders but because of the team, working together with the community and the industry. “Keep your eyes on the goal,” Brillantes reminded the CvSU community. Another remarkable part of the celebration was the recognition of retirees and service awardees, including the former university president, Dr. Divinia C. Chavez and former vice president for academic affairs, Dr. Rhodora S. Crizaldo. Achievement of the students from different colleges and satellite campuses was also given recognition. Charlene Mae C. Igdalino from Cavite City campus, was hailed as the Outstanding Student of the Year 2016, chosen from among the list of qualified nominees. The morning program officially ended with an inspiring closing remarks from the Vice President for Administrative and Support Services, Dr. Henry O. Garcia. New facilities up for construction There is no stopping for the continuous growth of the University as more infrastructures are up for construction in different locations. University officials led various ground breaking ceremonies, as part of the activities during the 111th Foundation Day celebration, which include the Provincial Hon. Alex B. Session in the afternoon started with the President, who presented the CvSU Development Agenda 2017-2022. He pointed out the ‘CvSU 2020, moving forward in one direction’, following the seven-year target, namely: 2016 – Transition; 2017 – Transformation; 2018 – Institutionalization; 2019 – Recognition; 2020 – Global University; 2021 – Sustainability; and 2022 – Research University. He posed a challenge to everyone and left with a covenant saying that, “We will affirm beginning today and in the next years to come that in achieving our vision and mission…We Will Be: FAST…AND…SERIOUS.” An audio-visual presentation on AmBisyon Natin 2040, a project of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) was shown to showcase the ordinary Filipinos’ dreams and aspirations in the next years to come. Different inputs were also discussed by the following: Higher Education Reform Agenda - Dr. Camilo A. Polinga; ASEAN and Philippine Qualifications Framework - Dr. Adolfo C. Manuel, Jr., Director, Quality Assurance and Accreditation Center; and National Higher Education Research Agenda – Dr. Ruel M. Mojica, NCRDEC Director. The first day of the training ended with an open forum and a closing remarks from Dr. Julio G. Alava, VP, External and Business Affairs. The succeeding days of the training were conducted in Hotel Veniz, Baguio City where the four major units, namely: Academic Affairs; Research; Administrative and Support Services; and External

and Business Affairs presented their plans and strategies to achieve the targets. There was active participation and critiquing of inputs which led to a very comprehensive delivery of expectations and outputs. On their way back home, the Council conducted benchmarking, aimed at knowing the best practices of some of the state universities in Region 3. First stop was at Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU), in Camiling, Tarlac. Formerly known as Tarlac College of Agriculture, TAU is certified No. 1 in Extension program and No. 2 in Research activities among SUCs in the country, according to its President, Dr. Max P. Guillermo. Next stop was at Tarlac State University (TSU) in Tarlac City, an IMS certified in three areas, namely: ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS); ISO 14001:2015 Environment Management System (EMS); and OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health Safety Management System. Last stop was at Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University (DHVTSU) in Bacolor, Pampanga, considered to be the cleanest and the oldest Arts and Trade School in Asia.

Armed with renewed vision and hope for the University, members of the Administrative Council converged at the International House II of the main campus for the opening program of the three-day Management Training and Strategic Planning Workshop, 24 – 27 January 2017. The Council, headed by Dr. Hernando D. Robles, President, was enthusiastic and optimistic during the first day of the training. In his opening remarks, the President laid down his vision for Global University 2020 anchored on his Medium Term Development Plan 2017-2022. Moreover, the morning session showcased the accomplishments and achievements of the University for the past five years which were presented by the following: Dr. Camilo A. Polinga, VP, Academic Affairs, for Higher Education Services; Dr. Ma. Agnes P. Nuestro, Dean, Graduate School and Open Learning College, for Advanced Education Services; Dr. Alejandro DC. Mojica, Sr., VP, Research, Extension, Continuing Education and Training Services, for Research Services and Technical Advisory Extension Services; and Dr. Henry O. Garcia, VP, Administrative and Support Services, for General Administration and Support Services and Support to Operations. Dr. Hosea DL Matel, Director for Research, also shared his views and opinions on the research status of the University. An open forum followed where stakeholders from the different sectors were invited and were given a chance to ask questions from the presenters.

CvSU inks two new MOA with DENR-PENROThe University, thru its continued partnership with the

Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-PENRO), in protecting and conserving the watersheds in the province of Cavite, recently signed two Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on two new watersheds, 9 February at the Lasap Hall, Administration Building.

Present during the signing for the “Biophysical and Socio-economic Characterization, Vulnerability Assessment and Integrated Watershed Management Plan of Timalan and Pasong Camachile River Watershed Projects” were officers and staff from the DENR-PENRO, project/study leaders and research assistants from the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science (DFES), and university officials headed by the president, Dr. Hernando D. Robles and Vice Presidents, Drs. Camilo A. Polinga and Henry O. Garcia.

The projects, considered as the last watershed projects under the province, will be conducted for seven months starting February to July 2017. There will be a comprehensive profiling of the Timalan and Pasong Camachile watersheds and the results will be used in creating effective management plans for the areas.

CETS, CAFENR host Biodiversity Conservation Training ProgramThe Continuing Education and Training Services (CETS) and

the College of Agriculture, Food, Environment and Natural Resources of the University, in partnership with the International Center for Development Communication (ICDC) and Kasetsart University (KU), Thailand, hosted a Biodiversity Conservation Training Program, 23 January to 4 February.

Participants of the two-week program were 11 forestry officers from the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India. The training aimed to gain more knowledge and strategies on biodiversity conservation of terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems through a two-day lecture and series of fieldtrips to various institutions and biodiversity-rich places in the country, which included the University of the Philippines Los Baños, Taal Volcano Protected Landscape, Avilon Zoo, Manila Ocean Park, Cavite PG-ENRO’S Pawikan Conservation Site, and El Nido and Underground River in Palawan.

PETDA – Cavite grants scholarship for CvSU students

The Petron Dealers Association (PETDA), Cavite, has signed a MOA to grant scholarship to deserving students of the University, at the Lasap Hall, 9 February.

Students who are taking Management and Engineering courses can avail of the said scholarship starting second semester, AY 2016-2017 and AY 2017-2018.

Present during the MOA signing were Dr. Hernando D. Robles, University President, Ms. Lorna C. Matel, Director for Special Projects, Ms. Gracia Licup, PETDA National President, and Ms. Cynthia H. Lara, PETDA-Cavite Coordinator. “If this project will succeed, the Association will offer more scholarships not only in the main campus but also in the satellite campuses”, Ms. Licup announced.

Through the yearsCAS enjoys Foundation Day 2017

It was indeed a Happy Hearts Day for the College of Arts and Sciences!With the theme ‘Baliktanaw: Filipino Noon at Ngayon”, the entire CAS

family celebrated its foundation day with fun filled activities, 14 February.The event started with a thanksgiving mass as a sign of gratitude

throughout the years of blessing the college. It was then followed by the Zumba Hour wherein students, faculty and staff exercised and were reminded of the value of fitness and health amidst activities in the academe. Some instructors also teamed up for the Basketball Game at the Open Court. Yellow Team won over Black Team with a one-point lead after a 30-minute game. An Amazing Race was also conducted.

After the lunch break, CAS conducted the recognition program for the academic scholars for the past two semesters and the faculty awardees who have showed exemplary service in the three areas. Mr. Bernard Feranil won as the Most Promising Faculty Member, Prof. Michele Bono as the Most Promising Faculty Researcher and Mrs. Veronica Peñaflorida and Mr. Andrew Jeciel Siducon as the Most Promising Faculty Extensionists.

Gawad Alab, an award giving body of the college, also recognized students who excelled not just in their academics but also with their practical skills and leadership potentials.

The fashion show of both students and faculty members showcased the fashion trends of Filipinos from before Spanish colonization up to the modern times. Ms. Marisol Crizaldo (DLMC) and Mr. Bernard Ferrer (DSSH) won in the faculty category. Meanwhile, Ricardo Bacos, Jr. (AB Journalism) and Shena ‘Ara’ Patricia Navarro (AB English) were awarded in the students’ category.

The day ended with a student-organized affair with the theme ‘Caschella’, wherein students wore Bohemian-inspired attires as they watch and listen to music, songs, spoken poetry and other performances.
