The Riverside Alumni Chap-ter (RAC) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity launched its Kappa League youth mentoring pro-gram on Saturday, September 26, 2015. The leadership de-velopment program, although new for the Riverside Chapter, was originally founded in 1969 at Locke High School by the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter. “This program is an important part of our fraternity’s mis-sion,” says Martez Nix, Direc-tor of the RAC Kappa League. “Young men need guidance and direction as they face the challenges of adolescence.”

During the orientation, Pole-march Demarius Carmichael and retired Navy Admiral Ed Moore provided an overview of the program curriculum and upcoming events, while tying them to the five phases of ed-ucational, occupational and social development: 1) Self Identity, 2) training in the are-as of academics and career

On September 11, 2015, Chief Joseph Paulino became the first in history to receive the Charles Burris 1st Responders Award from the Black Culture Foundation of San Bernardino. The award recognizes members of the law en-forcement whose accomplishments mirror the level of excellence exemplified by the first Afri-can-American Sheriff’s Captain of San Bernardi-no County, Charles Burris, who passed away in February 2015.

Chief Paulino makes sure that over 50,000 stu-dents of the San Bernardino City Unified School District are safe each day. He has implemented an explorer program for middle and high school students interested in law enforcement careers, volunteers at the annual Christmas toy giveaway and safety fairs, hosted a “Searching of Mentors Summit” at California State University San Ber-nardino and holds memberships with 100 Black Men of the Inland Empire and the Riverside Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

The Western Region of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. held its Golden Alert Confer-ence for youth and families on Saturday, No-vember 21, 2015. The conference highlight-ed issues in education and law enforcement that are especially plaguing African-American communities. Representatives from law enforcement agencies, as well as attorneys and civil rights organizations were among the panelists, who discussed the im-portance of knowing legal rights and respon-sibilities during encounters with police. Additional conferences are being held by Sigma Gamma Rho in Houston, TX, St. Louis, MO and Chicago, Il as part of the Sorority’s initiative to improve law enforcement rela-tionships with the African-American commu-nity. A legislative agenda, which aims to pre-vent conflict between citizens and police contains several solutions: mandatory annual cultural sensitivity training for officers, dash-board and body cameras, use of special pros-ecutors when police officers are being tried, establishment of citizen review boards for complaints against police officers and best practices for diverse representation for com-munity policing models.
