People often ask me, how do you know ifsomeone is a good leader?

I always tell them if you have to ask, then chances are theyAREN’T! I stumbled across this interesting article by SteveVenturo and made some revisions that might be helpful tothose who strive to lead others in a way that instills passionand commitment to the mission.

In order to be a true leader, you must do the things that lead-ers do … and you must do them well. Here are some of theleadership behaviors you need to adopt:

Accept that your results now come through others. As aleader, your primary job is not to do the work, but rather todirect, encourage, support, and develop the people who do.Their successes are your successes … and their failures areyours as well. You’ll no longer be judged merely by what youaccomplish individually. Your satisfaction must come fromand your reputation must be built on what your peopleachieve. You shine when THEY are the ones in the spotlight.

Be a leader... not a “boss” or a “pal.” Your people don’t wantto be bossed and they undoubtedly have more than enoughfriends. If you’re looking to get the most and best from yourgroup, don’t be a dictator or a chum, be a LEADER whomotivates, inspires, and models top-notch performance andconduct.

Let them know how they’re doing. Providing specific,detailed feedback needs to be an ongoing process rather thana once a year event. The more employees know how theystack up against your expectations, the easier it is for them tokeep their performance on track.

Do right by those who do right. When team members dowhat you want them to do, when they meet your expectationsor go above and beyond the call of duty, there ought to besomething in it for them. Of all the activities you engage in asa leader, “catching people doing things right” and recognizingthem for it needs to be one of your top priorities.

Explain “why’s” as well as “what’s.” It’s VERY importantfor your people to know why things need to be done. It helpsthem feel like valued members of the organization. And whenthe why’s make good sense (which they usually do), itincreases employee commitment and dedication to the tasksat hand.

Deal with performance problems early. Make and take thetime to deal with performance discrepancies as soon as youbecome aware of them. Work through any fear, anxiety, ordiscomfort you may have. The earlier you address issues, theeasier and less emotional they will be to handle for everyoneinvolved.

Set the example and the tone. Regardless of what appears onjob descriptions or in employee handbooks, your behavior isthe real performance standard that team members will follow.They’ll rightfully assume it’s okay and appropriate to dowhatever you do. Why wouldn’t they? So it’s critical that youset the proper example and desired tone … that you model theperformance and behavior you expect from others.

Keep your commitments. Don’t make promises lightly …don’t make ones you can’t (or don’t intend to) keep … don’tBS the people who ultimately will determine your success.And when you do make commitments, write them down,check them frequently, and do whatever it takes to make goodon them.

Embrace diversity. Work on maximizing your respect fordiversity and insist that each member of your teams does thesame. Appreciate individuals who are “different” – especiallythose of other races, cultures, creeds, and national origins.Fact is, it’s the legal thing to do … it’s the moral thing to do… it’s the smart thing to do.

So if you are like me, these take practice and commitment toexcellence. Let me know other ideas you might have for lead-ing right.

Cooking with Chef JulietteI truly love fresh figs and forthe past several weeks have

been enjoying the abundancethat are available.

Now I know many of you willturn your noses up at figs, but

I ask that you give themanother chance!

If you happen to be walking down the street during the winterin any borough in New York and you spy large displays of plas-tic bags and gray electrical tape, you will then know two things,first, you are in an Italian neighborhood and secondly thethings underneath all that bunting are fig trees!

I remember as a child growing up in Queens, we couldn't waitfor the end of the summer when the figs were bursting on thetrees. My dad planted a stalk from my uncle’s tree, and withintwo years we had a healthy tree, bearing our very own figs.And, he was able to successfully graft about five more, that, tothis day are alive and well and bearing fruit.

My mother would make stewed figs that we would either eat forbreakfast or use as a topping on vanilla ice cream. She alsowas the queen of putting fruits up to make a sort of liquor. Allsummer long she would make them, packing plums, cherriesand of course figs in mayonnaise jars storing them in the cab-inet under the kitchen sink. As far as her recipe goes, it waspretty much what ever she wanted to use yet the taste alwayssomehow came out the same. It was a mixture of sweet ver-mouth, some brandy and either orange or lemon rind. By lateAugust early September they would be ready, and by midSeptember my mother would be trying to hide them from uskids. She would allow us a few cherries every once in a while,but we would have to sneak the big fruits, cause as one wouldimagine one could get pretty buzzed on the stuff!!

Years later while crisscrossing our way through Turkey my sis-ter and I came upon a roadside stand where there were boxesand boxes of fresh figs. You could smell them upon approachand they were they the most beautiful figs I ever seen. Theywere huge (some as big as a tangerine!), and purple and greenand DELICIOUS.

Recently I came across a recipe for figs poached in balsamicvinegar that I would like to share with you. I made someadjustment to the original recipe as I thought it would be toosweet and I am glad I did. I ended up making three thingswith the one recipe. Maybe you can try one or two. Or why notall three!Figs Poached in Balsamic Vinegar3/4 cup sugar1 ½ cup water1 cup balsamic½ vanilla bean(optional)few thick pieces of either orange or lemon rind (thanks mom)2 pounds small firm-but-ripe figs ( I used black mission andturkey)

In a saucepan combine sugar,water and vinegar and optionalvanilla bean.Bring to a boil add rind and stir to dissolve sugar.

Add figs and stir gently and let simmer for about 10 minutes oruntil figs are tender. Remove figs from poaching liquid andreturn liquid to stove letting it simmer till reduced by 1/3 oruntil it thickens slightly. Put figs in jars or plastic containersand pour liquid to cover figs and store in the fridge.

Serving Ideas1- Soften a log of goat cheese. To that add three slices choppedprosciutto or speck, one tablespoon fine chopped fresh rose-mary,the grated rind of one lemon and two tablespoons ofroasted finely chopped pistachio nuts.

Mix thoroughly in a bowl and put mix into piping bag with a#10 tip.

Take out and drain about 10 figs and make a small slit on thebottom. Fit tip into slit and fill figs until they almost burst.Finely chop about ¼ cup or roasted pistachios and dip the topof the fig into them pressing gently.

2- Cut a 4 figs in half. Warm about 1/3 cup of liquid. Add figsto warm liquid. Get two bowls of the best vanilla ice cream youcan afford and divide the figs and liquid amongst the twobowls.

3- To the remaining liquid I added a few sprigs of fresh rose-mary and used the liquid to make salad dressing.

are internal or turned inside out. So what we think of as the“seeds” are actually the flower heads!*Thought to be first cultivated in Egypt.*Bought here by the Spaniards in the 19th whom founded the*Mission in San Diego. Hence “mission figs”.*They are a good source of potassium, B6 and dietary fiber.
