President’s Message “A New Hope” As the days of December grew shorter, and the darkness of 2020 grew longer, a new hope began to grow. A vac-cine for the Corona Virus was announced, and it is now being distributed locally. We hope this will lead to the resumption of regular activities. These longer days are also symbolic of our hope for a happier new year. As days grow longer and darkness

changes to light, hope will continue to grow build. Much the way it did for our Celtic ancestors at Newgrange in Co Meath. Over 5,200 years ago, this earthen structure was built to align with the winter solstice. For the people of ancient Ireland, the temple had astrological, spiritual, religious, and cere-monial importance. As the sun rises in the morning, a ray of light enters a small window at the center of the structure. This beam illuminates a long corridor, until it lights up a large central chamber. Dear Shamrock Club Member and friends,

Thanks be to God that we are coming to the end of this

miserable year 2020. All of creation has suffered under

the curse of Covid -19, and we look forward to better

days ahead for 2021. I had my own personal share in

the Covid catastrophe When a week or so before Christ-

mas, I began to suffer what I thought was my annual pre

-Christmas cold. The sniffles got much worse, and I felt

I needed to get tested just to make sure. You guessed it- I was Covid posi-

tive. Mandatory Quarantine for me and for my parish associate, Fr. Mike

Watson. Thank heaven, Fr. Michael Lump, Vicar for priests, was able to get

coverage for all Christmas masses and Holy Family masses since neither I

nor Fr. Watson were allowed to celebrate. What a drag-spending Christmas

away from Church for the first time in 47 years of priesthood. However, I

learned a lot about myself and the good Lord while on the shelf, alone. I’m

clearly intended to mark the new year, but it is also thought to have symbolized the victory of life over death. In a year of unusual occurrences, the day of the winter solstice also marked the brightest appearance of the Christmas Star in 800 years. This confluence of light from the planets Jupiter and Saturn is thought to have been the sign which brought the Magi to Bethlehem over 2000 years ago. Whether that is true or not, it is a tale of hope and inspiration which can serve as a reminder for us to look to the heavens when faced with darkness and looking for hope. And if nothing else, we know the Irish never let the truth get in the way of a good story. In spite of the struggles of last year, I have so many good memories. People volunteered and joined to-gether to support our events and all pitch in, including the impromptu Food Drive in December which filled two cars full of groceries. The folks at Holy Family were very grateful. Service is what makes us special, and I would like to recognize a few of our public servants. Congratulations to newly elected Judge Michael Mentel, thank you to Ron O’Brien for 48 years of dedicated service, and a parting glass to Jay Fulton as he retired from the police department. Public service is the hallmark of the Irish com-munity and all who serve in positions as police, fire, or healthcare workers should be thanked daily for what they do. I have great hope for the new year and the upcoming season when we celebrate our patron, St. Patrick. St. Patrick was held captive for seven years, exposed to great trials, and yet everyday he gave thanks and recited the “Lorica” (also known as St Patrick’s Breastplate). It begins, “I arise today through a mighty strength…” It will be through this strength that we WILL have a green season. What that will look like, we are still trying to figure out, but we WILL celebrate again. In the meantime, my wish for you is that the light of these events I mentioned above will be our hope that the best is still yet to come! Until then, may that light and the light of the sun, shine bright upon your face, until we meet again! Andy

happy to report that I am now out of the Covid

woods, and am waiting to be offered an opportuni-

ty to get the new vaccine. Sadly, I have had sev-

eral friends come down with it and a few have

been hospitalized. I can be thankful my case was

relatively mild.

Those of us who have managed to survive all of

this are thankful for a new lease on life. We are

looking forward to a Covid-free year and a contin-

uation of our Club’s Activities. Thanks to Presi-

dent Andy and the officers and others who have

kept the torch burning during these terrible times.

Better days are ahead.

I think it’s important for us to keep in mind and

prayer those who are suffering greatly during this

time. There are so many who have lost jobs and

daily wonder where the money for rent, mortgage

and food will come from to feed their families.

There are those who still mourn the loss of loved

ones to covid and other illnesses during this time.

Prayer and generosity are necessary elements to

help them survive the coming days. Those of us

who are able should do our best to help out any

way we can.

In conclusion, we need to be reminded of the real

meaning of this season of Christmas and New

Year’s time. We need to remember that God so

loved the world that he gave His only son, that

whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

That ‘s the very meaning of the Feasts we have

celebrated. May the Hope of Christmas sustain us

in the months to come, and help us become better

people, better Christians because of it.

In Christ,

Msgr. John K. Cody, Chaplain

The Member Organizations of the

The Clann na nGael of Columbus Ohio

are pleased to announce the 2021 Honoree

THE IRISH BRIGADE

Founded in 1979 by Dave Murphy and Pat Mogan to play a promotional event at the Lazarus Department Store in downtown Columbus, the band spent the next 19 years entertaining audiences across Central Ohio and beyond. The Brigade was a memorable cast of characters including regulars Greg Hankins, Kevin Talty, Dennis O’Hooley Smith, Phil Franck, Jim Scarf, and sound man Brian Conklin, plus many irregulars along the way. The Brigade was the original Irish traditional music group in Columbus, in more ways than one. Their enjoyment of the music and love of Irish history and cul-ture echoes on through other music groups today.

Please join us in congratulating The Irish Brigade for their contribution to the Irish community.

A recognition event for The Irish Brigade and all our 2021 award winners will be scheduled in 2021.
