Calisthenics - Something for Everyone!

Mrs Helen Richey, our Cal-ability Ambassador

With a focus on increasing membership to Clubs and raising the profile of Calisthenics within the wider community, CVI have implemented a number of specialised programs delivering modified Calisthenics to a variety of different target groups over the past few years. The newest of these programs is the Cal-ability program, which introduces calisthenics to children with disabilities.

Children with disabilities traditionally have been limited in their sport and recreation options, which is a terrible shame as every child should have the right to participate in sport. Sometimes these limits have been as a result of simply not knowing what is out there and other times it has been because sporting clubs have not been educated in how to create inclusive environments.

One person who can see the benefits that this program has to offer, is none other than ‘Dancing with the Stars’ judge, and Australia’s first lady of Ballroom Dancing, Mrs Helen Richey, who agreed to become our Cal-ability Ambassador. This is the first time that CVI has had an Ambassador and we look forward to working with Helen and her husband, Robert, on a number of initiatives focusing on r a i s i n g the p rof i l e o f Cal isthenics through our Cal-ability program. (Continued on next page .)

Helen will officially launch the Cal-ability program at this year’s State Team Concert and will view some of the performances of the afternoon concert.

CVI’s Cal-ability program is currently being delivered in seven Special Development Schools across Victoria and has a pilot program being developed with Blind Sports Victoria. We are hoping to partner with other disability networks to ensure that calisthenics becomes an option for everyone, offering smaller classes of modified calisthenics.

With the assistance of a number of resources, the program also aims to educate and train Coaches and Club Officials in how to create inclusive and welcoming Club environments. CVI will be holding a seminar for Coaches with a panel of ‘experts’ in this field, including parents and Coaches who are already doing wonderful things in this area. We are also looking for Coaches to deliver these modified programs at various locations throughout Victoria. Whilst we know that this way forward may seem a little daunting to some Coaches and Clubs, we assure you that this is the right path to take, and we are confident that all Victorian Clubs and Coaches will embrace this opportunity for increased membership and personal growth and development.

This is a monumental step forward for Calisthenics, bringing our sport in line with some of the more popular and well known sports that attract greater funding and enjoy a higher profile due to their inclusive and welcoming environments. By expanding our umbrella of Calisthenics programs, we are ensuring that Calisthenics really is ‘Something for Everyone’ and our Cal-ability program, funded by VicHealth, is our first step towards making this a reality.

Brianna Lee 2012 CVI Senior Graceful Solo winner

I’m sitting on my lounge typing this piece. It has been 3 days since I won the CVI Senior Graceful State Championships and I still can’t believe it has actually happened! This is a title I have strived to win since my return to doing graceful solos in 2006. I have finally paved my way to success through the hours of hard work and dedication, the trials and tribulations, the heart aches and the tears, to come out and execute the most heartfelt and free performance of my calisthenic career. No matter what the result was to be on the night, I knew that I had put everything I could into my performance and nothing could change this. It is always my chief aim each time I perform to entertain my audience and focus on the feelings I experience when I do one of the things I love the most – dance! It was then a thrilling unexpected bonus to achieve 42 point win on the night in such a stunning section with the most beautiful dancers in calisthenics.

I will now begin again on the long and arduous journey to compete to win another great pinnacle of calisthenics – RSSS Most Graceful Girl. Since I resumed competing in graceful solos in 2006, at Ballarat I have achieved a 5th, two 3rd places and three 2nd places. All I can know for sure is that I will pour my heart and soul into my solo and I will take flight on that thrilling rollercoaster ride known as performing. It would be an absolute dream come true to be the RSSS Most Graceful Girl. It is something I have dreamed of for as long as I can remember. When I step onto that magic Ballarat stage I will be taking with me a small part of every special person who has supported me throughout my calisthenic life, for they have all added something unique to my development, which I am so thankful for - MOST of all Diane Synnott, both my team and solo coach, who as a previous graceful girl herself truly understands my dream.

2012 RSSS Ballarat Graceful Finalists CVI would like to congratulate the following participants who have gained a place in the final at the RSSS Ballarat Most Graceful Competition to be held in October 2012:

K. Andrews, S. Bayley, J. Bouloukis, A. Burton, M. Cousin, J. Doig, E. Gibbs, C. Harrison, R. Heckman, B. Lee, C. Lord, S. McKenzie, M. Newman, M. Nugent, N. Parkhurst, M. Roughana, N. Salton, E. Smith, L. Street, K. Wootton

2012 MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS PROGRAM

ARE YOU GETTING YOUR DAILY QUOTA OF FRUIT?

Fruit is an important part of our daily diet, packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre to help keep us healthy and protect against disease. You should include at least 2 serves of fruit in your diet every day. A serve is equal to one medium piece of fruit (e.g. an apple, orange or banana), or 2 smaller pieces (e.g. 2 plums or apricots) or 1 cup of chopped fruit. Try not to get stuck on the same 2 every day. Variety is important, so it’s wise to include a variety of different coloured fruits as they all have different health benefits.

Include fruit in your day by adding some to your bowl of breakfast cereal, add it to yoghurt or blend it in a smoothie, use it for recovery after exercise, or simply eat it as a snack any time of the day. Why not also experiment with some new fruits – tamarillo, pomegranate, rambutan or mangosteen.

Blackburn College celebrates 50th year The club was established by Minna Johnson when she moved into the area with her husband and baby son. It began with approximately 26 students in the first year. Being a new and developing area the club quickly grew and by 1969 there were 200 pupils registered, with a waiting list in the Tinies and Sub-Juniors sections! Minna originally taught all sections of the club and went on to have three more children, Carol, Robyn and Sue. Over the years the club developed competitively and the three sisters became keen calisthenics pupils, all going on to become Level 1 Coaches and gradually taking over classes from their mother. Minna has remained the Principal of the club for its entire 50 years.

Hundreds of pupils and their families have passed through the club in its 50 years and have great memories and developed strong friendships. Many of the clubs original members have returned to Blackburn with their daughters and many more ex mothers and pupils still support the club in various ways.

To commemorate this milestone they are holding a celebratory evening on Saturday 26th May in Blackburn. They invite all past members and their families to join us. Please RSVP to Minna by phone on 9802 0285 or through the club website www.blackburncalisthenics.asn.au

A Volunteer for 45 Years Mrs Lorna Chalmers received a Community Services Award in 2011, from the Moonee Valley City for her ongoing commitment to Westaire Calisthenic College for the past 45 years. Lorna, a sprightly 91 year old, has been an integral part of the Westaire College since its inception in 1967, assisting her two daughters, Sue Smith and Jenny Godber who originally founded the church activity in Airport West.

Mrs C, (as she is affectionately known), had learnt her dressmaking skills from her mother, volunteered to take on the role of dressmaker, making costumes for the pupils from 1967 to 2010. It is estimated that in one year, Mrs C may have made or altered over 300 team costumes, which would add up to 13,000 costumes during the 45 year period. She would go shopping to purchase the materials and would often take on completing the trimming of costumes and headpieces, and researching library books to ensure that the Folk Dance costumes were authentic.

Being a bit of a perfectionist, Lorna would attend class to take accurate measurements, fit ballet and Folk Dance shoes, (and dye them if necessary), attend competitions to ensure that the costumes fitted well and the hem lines were correct. It is not surprising that she would recall costumes for minor adjustments if she felt it necessary, especially if one of the girls had grown during the year.

Mrs C allocated part of her house and garage to the storing of costumes, materials and trimmings. She purchased several sewing machines, just in case one broke down while in the middle of making costumes, as she did not want to let the team down.

As with most Calisthenic devotees, Mrs C’s main focus during the year was to attend the Royal South Street Society competitions in Ballarat. She would sit in the back row - she claimed this as being her seat!

Both Mrs C and her husband, Jim Chalmers (dec), were recognised by Rotary and received a ‘Pride of Workmanship Award’. Mrs C was active in the church as a Sunday School Teacher and being part of the St Phillips Church Choir.

Mrs Chalmers was not able to continue in her role this year due to ill health, but recently mentioned at the 45th Anniversary Celebration of the Club, that she is ready to go back to the sewing machine. She did make the octopus, pictured right, for the Sub Junior song last year.

THE JUDGES JOURNAL

A note from the A.S.C.A. - May 2012

Australian Society of Calisthenics Adjudicators

Our ASCA members have been busy adjudicating and enjoying the talents of our soloist and duo performers throughout the solo season as the 2012 CVI State Titles come to a close. We would like to congratulate all participants on their dedication to our sport and in maintaining such a high degree of excellence and professional stage presence. We would also like to acknowledge the amazing talents of our coaches whose vision and creativity continues to inspire our performers and the audiences alike. Our thanks also go to the hardworking support crew and families that encourage and assist these competitors on and off the calisthenics stage to reach such high standards. It is always a delight for our members to view the conclusion of the awards presentation at a competition - once the curtain falls the girls representing many different clubs, embrace and congratulate one another, fully appreciating the efforts they each bring to the stage. This camaraderie is a very strong element of our unique sport. Our State Team members have been training hard for the National Championships to be held in Darwin 11-14th July this year. We wish them well for the remaining weeks of preparations and look forward to enjoying their polished performances on stage. We congratulate two of our ACSA members Kerryn Waddell and Michelle Urquhart who will have the privilege of adjudicating the National Championships and our nation’s most talented competitors this year. Both ladies are held in high esteem by the calisthenics community and we wish them well for a successful competition. As we head towards our team competition season, we would like to remind all Coaches to be aware of the banned movements and review the video again to refresh on these. As new, creative moments are added to the calisthenics repertoire by coaches and pupils we ask you to take special care with the following Banned Movement: Chest Roll and all variations of this movement. Please review your work carefully to ensure that this movement is not included in team or solo arrangements, putting competitors at risk. We also remind you to ensure your time limits for each item are in line with the changes that were brought in at the commencement of the 2012 season. In closing, we would like to extend our warmest wishes to you all as you prepare for the exciting 2012 team competitions and we look forward to enjoying and adjudicating your creative performances. Interested in becoming an Adjudicator or finding out more about our ASCA Cadet Program… please visit www.calisthenics.asn.au

CVI Honour Role 2012

CVI would like to honour pupils who have been registered as participants for their 20th year this year. If you have been registered for 20 years, not necessarily at the same Club, nor does it have to be 20 years of continuous registration, then forward your name and registration number to the CVI office prior to the 23rd July 2012.

Getting to know your Adjudicators - Bronwyn Lloyd

Bronwyn began calisthenics (or gymnasium as it was then called) in 1950, with her mother Joan, at Ashburton Baptist. Her partner in crime was Ros Brereton (now Otzen), the present patron of Calisthenics Victoria. After a few years of weekly classes, she decided to “retire”. It lasted 6 months and still involved her attending classes sitting on the stage watching. As part of a junior team, Bronwyn was one of 60 girls and in the back row!! That year her team achieved an HM in hoops and the rest of the class achieved a first, a second, a third & HC!! Bronwyn continued with her mum’s classes and as a senior attended Clifton. (In those days a pupil could attend 2 classes at the one time!!) It was at this time she began coaching at Footscray Methodist and that year, for those who remember Carnegie Comps, her inter team achieved 1st in free arm, beating her mother’s class. In those days a club could be novice until a win was achieved, so that thrill of winning open was one remembered forever. It was the club she stayed coaching at for 25 years, St Stephen’s Williamstown. With Ballarat as a goal, she finally took her teams there in 1981 and over the years managed many places and several aggregates! Her first ever placing being a 3rd in the Junior Song. One year she recounts a junior spec item required bunting flags for the finishing pose. On arrival at Ballarat it was discovered that they had been left behind!! Requesting a dad to scout around car yards for a length, she was told by the said dad that he would get them after dark!!! Needless to say the item went on WITHOUT bunting! For many years Bronwyn has been involved in the Victorian Calisthenics Coaches Association, (VCCA), including 6 years as President, numerous years as secretary, committee member & an assessor/mentor for level one. For 7 years if you rang the VCCA office on a Thursday or Friday she would do her utmost to assist coaches with any query. She is a Life Member of the Association. At the 2012 Adjudicators Annual General Meeting, Bronwyn, along with Mrs Brenda Green, was presented with a certificate marking 35 years as an Adjudicator. She has had the honour to adjudicate State titles including Senior Graceful Girl, to travel to Royal South Street, be part of the National panel on 2 occasions and to travel interstate for various State championships. (“It’s always a worry that you make it on time!!”) As a member of the EAB Bronwyn examines skills from Test One through to Grade 2 both in Victoria and Interstate. She also assists with the training of pupils wishing to take exams. Other interesting appointments have included adjudicating at the APEX Games and on numerous occasions, being on the panel of adjudicators at the Dutch/German Carnivale competition held annually in Melbourne. (Just imagine the competition has to halted whilst the floor is swept because the canteen in operation has hot chips!!) Her interest in coaching is now with the older adults where, in conjunction with her mother, she takes a weekly recreational class in the Melbourne suburb of Bentleigh and for the past 3 years has been coaching Masters at Sterling CC. She is looking forward to coaching them for the Pan Pacs Masters Games in November this year.

2011 - Jeaden’s record-breaking year The year, 2011, will go down in history as a record-breaking year for Jeaden Calisthenic College. Not only was it Jeaden’s 21st birthday, it was also the year that saw every section - Sub-Juniors, Juniors, Inters, Seniors and Masters - win every aggregate for which they competed. That’s a 100% win rate!

And to top off Jeaden’s glory year, a long-time member of the Jeaden family, Stephanie Alway, trained by Jeaden’s founding coach, Jeanne Sorich, won all three Graceful Girl competitions; the CVI Graceful Girl, the VCCA Graceful Girl and the prestigious Royal South Street Society Ballarat (RSSS) Graceful Girl.

What’s the secret to Jeaden’s success? Many factors… Let’s start with great coaches and assistant coaches, who have a true passion and love for the sport. Led by Jeanne and her daughters, Lucinda and Kirrilly, the talented coaching team inspires excellence amongst all members of the Jeaden family.

Next, throw in Jeaden’s team members, whose enthusiasm, work ethic and team focus produces outstanding performances, not only on stage, but consistently week in and week out.

Combine this with the dedicated and hard-working Jeaden support team—mums, dads, grandmas, grandpas - encouraging home practice, creating costumes and props, supporting fundraising efforts, working backstage… It’s a winning combination. Mind you…2011 wasn’t all plain sailing. Obstacles arose that had to be overcome.

There was the moment when Subbie Rods was threatened at RSS with disqualification for a rule breach…thankfully proved to be unwarranted, but cause for significant angst for a while.

Then the moment when the heavens opened and it rained inside Her Majesty’s Theatre during the RSS Seniors comp. If the show didn’t go on, the unspoken dream of achieving a 100% win in 2011 would be lost.

Thankfully, the show did go on, leaving final pressure on the Inters to complete the dream, which they did convincingly. The club’s success was recognised when Jeanne was awarded the Coach of the Year award for 2011.

Ballaarat Solo Comp - 20th Anniversary For their 20th Anniversary, the Ballaarat Solo Competition had a record number of entrants this year, 368, with the comp having to be held over 3 days; even though the days were long, they were most rewarding. This year was very special for one lady, Mrs Lorraine Meade, celebrating her 20th year as a volunteer. Lorraine was one of two founding members of the competition, the other being Barry Davis. To celebrate the event, on the Saturday night they invited many guests, including Joy Smith, President of CVI and Gwenda Lucas, Director of Competitions, to view the 17years Graceful Solo Competition. Gwenda kindly offered to make the presentations to the place getters, before a celebratory supper was held in the Foyer of the theatre.

Many thanks to the Studio Arc Calisthenic Club, who gave us 28 volunteers for the weekend. We are a small committee of 14 who run this competition every year, which we could not do without the continued support of the Calisthenic community and the competitors. (Pictured at right Lorraine Mead being congratulated on her 20 years by Julie Wiseman.)

Ceres ‘Sister Act’ The Ceres seniors have their very own sister act going on. This year the team of 28, consists of seven pairs of sisters, making up half the team. They include Sarah and Emma Lacey, Jodi and Natalie Cousins, Melinda and Rachel Cowan, Renee and Elise Heckman, Karina and Julia Doig, Bronwyn and Courtney Moore and Caitlin and Carly Ioannidis. Many of the girls have been at the

club since they were tinies and have followed in each others’ footsteps to become part of the senior team. Not only are there seven sets of sisters, coach Lynette Cousins also has two daughters and two nieces within her team. The number of sisters within the team certainly amounts to more work for their mothers. Of the 14 girls, eight also compete in solos and seven are members of the 2012 state team.
