Page 2: Volume 6 Issue 3 & 4 July—December 2006Linda Erickson Susan Salvin Sandra Overton Karen Roach Inside this issue: President's Mes-sage, 2007 Board, Treasurer Report 2 New Titles,

As usual, it's been a busy

summer for our club with a

nice mixture of casual get-

togethers and competitive

events to showcase our

breed.

You'll find a report on the

club picnic elsewhere in this

issue. I missed the Picnic yet

again this year, as I was off

pursuing water titles in

sunny California instead.

One of these years I am de-

termined to get time off and

make the drive up to enjoy

the festivities.

The water trial was a suc-

cess, as usual. Thanks to the

water trial committee and

volunteers for all your efforts

and congratulations to all

participants. Many inter-

ested pet owners and specta-

tors came by to watch, par-

ticularly on Sunday when the

sun paid us a welcome visit.

Thanks to the efforts of An-

gela Harding and Jessie Pe-

terson, our Supported Entry

was a winner . The weather

was hot and sunny but most

of the dogs handled the heat

well and there was tough

competition for wins in all

classes. Results of the Sup-

ported Entry are elsewhere

in the newsletter.

The new slate of Club offi-

cers takes the helm at the

upcoming Holiday Party. I

appreciated the honor of

serving the Club as President

for the last two years and

welcome the enthusiasm and

dedication of our incoming

officers. The party is a great

opportunity to meet and

greet your Club officers, fel-

low club members and their

PWD companions and cele-

brate the season.

Holiday parties for the last

eight years , starting with my

first PWD bred by Christi &

Sandy Overton, and hope to

keep fun and informative

things happening for the

local PWD owners and our

club.

My husband and I now are

owned by 3 PWDs- Pilot (CH

Stargazer’s Skypilot CWD),

Thank you for selecting me

as the president of the Pa-

cific NW PWD club for the

coming year 2007. I am

happy to be a part of this

great group and look forward

to meeting more of the mem-

bers at the local gatherings

of the club. I have enjoyed

the grooming seminars, pic-

nics, play days, supported

entry shows, water trials and

Eve (CH Stargazer Evening

Sonata Do Gato) and Pearl

(Sisu’s Life’s An Oyster). I

am active in water work,

training for therapy work-

just need to take the test,

and soon to do conformation

again. I hope to see you at

the local events and to hear

what your concerns or

wishes for the next year are

for the PNWPWD.

I would like to thank eve-

ryone who attended the

picnic in August at Kayak

Point Park. We had a gen-

eral membership meeting,

followed by great food

and wet dogs. The

weather was sunny and

the dogs had a great time

in the sand and salt water.

If you have never at-

tended before, plan on it

for next year. It is usually

the first weekend in Au-

gust and it is a great

place to meet other wa-

ter dogs and their own-

ers. We had about

25 to 30 people

with their dogs.

Unfinished business

Grooming seminar: Suzi

Aarts reported that the

grooming seminar had low

attendance, but was popular

with participants. The semi-

nar was a great opportunity

for pet owners to learn

proper grooming tech-

niques. Linda Ericson at-

tended the event and found

it very helpful

Agility Fun Day/

Potluck: Rebecca Sliger

reported that the agility fun

day/potluck was a blast for

the approximately fifteen

dogs that attended with

their people. Karen Roach

and Jan Curry hosted the

event on their Oregon

ranch. Excellent food and

non-stop fun made the occa-

sion special.

Pursuit of AKC

sanctioning for

club: Little progress has

been made on pursuing AKC

sanctioning. Janet Boyd-

Kristensen stated that it was

time to form a committee to

look into the issue. Angela

Harding said that the AKC

will want to know the num-

ber of people in the club and

skills that members have.

Members are now asked to

provide this information on

the new membership form.

The club currently has a

total of 112 members in 78

households.

Water Trials: Water trials

will be held on Sept 8 -10.

The trials will be judged by

Mary Kay Schroeder.

Katrina Jackson showed a

Minutes of the December

meeting Janet Lankester

asked if everyone had seen

the minutes from the De-

cember meeting, which were

published in the newsletter.

There was general assent.

She asked if any modifica-

tions needed to be made and

none were suggested.

Treasurer’s Report Renee

Smith reported that the club

has $13,851.45 in the check-

ing account. The club also

has $28.50 in the savings

account. Renee suggested

that the club move some of

the money from the check-

ing account into an interest

bearing account. All agreed

that this was a good idea.

There was some discussion

Holiday Party: The holi-

day party was on the

agenda, but was not dis-

cussed.

Club donation for Live

Auction at National Spe-

cialty: Angela Harding has

received a letter requesting

a donation from the club for

the live auction at October’s

National Specialty in Illi-

nois. In the past, the club

has provided a basket for

the silent auction; however

the live auction requires a

more significant item, val-

ued at over $50. Angela

stated that homemade items

were often the most popu-

lar. Towels embroidered

with a PWD logo were sug-

gested. Angela asked Janet

Lankester to show the group

a hand painted tile done by

a local artist. Although the

tile had clearly been done

from a photo of Deuce, An-

gela had found the tile inad-

vertently in a store. There

was discussion of

getting a set of repre-

sentative tiles done.

Angela Harding and

Janet Lankester also

mentioned how

much they liked a

photo taken by Crea-

tive Indulgence of

Rebecca Sliger’s dog, Lucy,

at the last water trial. The

photo is of the dog’s head

(Continued from page 5) swimming through the wa-

ter and could easily be any

black PWD. There was talk

of having a framed copy of

the photo done. The photo

could also be used as a base

for a tile. Janet will get

more information about the

tiles. Rebecca will find out

costs of getting a print from

Creative Indulgence.

A motion was made by

Katrina Jackson and sec-

onded by Renee Smith that

the club provide a gift for

the live auction at the Na-

tional Specialty. The selec-

tion of the gift will be made

by the board and not exceed

$200. The motion passed

unanimously.

A motion was made by Halle

Howe and seconded by

Linda Ericson that the club

not contribute a basket, but

instead focus resources on

the live auction gift. The

motion passed unani-

mously.

Nominating Committee:

A nominating committee is

needed to provide a slate of

officers. Angela Harding

explained that being a com-

mittee member requires

networking with members

and placing phone calls to

find members interested in

serving. Janet Lankester led

the committee last year.

Suzanne Malick was not in

attendance, but will be

asked to lead the nominat-

ing committee this year.

Janet Lankester and Linda

Ericson volunteered to be

on the committee. Renee

Smith (Treasurer) and Re-

becca Sliger (Recording Sec-

retary) volunteered to con-

tinue in their positions.

Water Workshop: Re-

becca Sliger suggested that

the club consider hosting a

water workshop, preferably

during the summer. Janet

Boyd-Kristensen reported

that Cathi Jzyk had been

looking into some possible

locations for such an event.

She has been looking at

Mossy Rock Park. Boy

Scout Camp, dog camp and

YMCA camp locations were

thrown out as suggestions.

All club members are en-

couraged to be on the look-

out for possible sites and

contact Janet Boyd-

Kristensen with suggestions.

Ship’s Store: Several

members expressed interest

in a renewed presence by

the ship’s store. Wind

breakers have been very

popular in the past. Janet

Lankester suggested that a

new logo be explored.

Katrina Jackson volun-

teered to draw a few logos

for consideration at the De-

cember meeting.

It was a banner year in terms of entry and

interest. I know there are many future water

titlists in our midst!

the water, much like her father,

Bo'sun.

When she sees her neon green

harness come out, she too, be-

comes vibrant!

On Saturday, our first attempt at

Apprentice, Glory did everything

flawlessly. It was her less-than-

capable handler, moi, who failed

the exercises by touching Glory

As soon as Glory's pups were out

the gate mid June, she and I

headed for the water. Her favor-

ite activity is retrieving the

dummy, any dummy, which

she's been doing since she was a

wee pup! It was time for us to get

serious about water work

and the rest of the challenges for

the Apprentice level.

Sunday was a much better day for

Water work thoughts from

Sandy Overton : “This was Sa-

brina's first try at Courier (she is

9-1/2) She did the first exer-

cises with finesse-I was sooo

proud of her I nearly fell off the

board. Jim showed Beatle in

Apprentice-and she did 3 of the

5 exercises. Sunday she said-

no-you had your chance on

Saturday and that is it! The

highlight of the weekend was

watching Suzanne Malick and

Chili (our traveling compan-

ions) earn a CWDX and a Ver-

satility. So Beatle and Sabrina

both had to get their float lines

for each chicken wing they got

for dinner-and they were pretty

enthusiastic about it too!”

AKC, THE DOG MUSEUM, AND MORE

Ever wonder what happens to your letter when you write to the AKC asking why

your dog never got points recorded from a recent show? Or wonder how the Recov-

ery program works?

Well, I decided to stop at the American Kennel Club digs back east and see for my-

self. I’d frequented the venerable building in New York City in past years, but regis-

tration stuff, as well as DNA, CHF and Recovery arms have gone south. The “big

dog house” is in North Carolina now. It was an enlightening tour: tell you all about

it next issue.

Heading west, I (and probably everyone else who attended the Specialty) visited the

Dog Museum of America in St. Louis. Twenty years ago I toured the museum with

Megan, my first Portuguese Water Dog, who walked the hallowed halls in a digni-

fied manner befitting such an august edifice. Ironic that the Dog Museum no longer

admits dogs! They house a collection of dog art spanning centuries. As a charter

member, I see many of the new acquisitions in their bulletins, so it was fun to view

them up close. More on this next time, too.

Seeing so many northwesterners at the PWDCA National was really nice. During the

deluge days, we heard “You guys are used to this, right?” Agility and obedience

folks toughed it out in the pouring rain, but there were sunny autumn days as well

for lots of informal swim time in the lake for all our dogs.

I always stop in Montana to visit our breed book’s author, Kathryn Braund. This

time she was at the fairgrounds, where she and her Havanese dog completed the

last leg for a Novice Rally title. If you’re ever in Great Falls, a visit to Kitty will be an

afternoon of Water Dog history (and kisses from her PWD kids as well).

Tru was with me the entire 9,944 miles. Doug and his bird-hunting PWD girl

Beamer joined us from Illinois to home, via Yellowstone, where the two dogs en-

joyed seeing elk and bison “up close and personal”. En route I visited one of my

R.E.A.D. therapy dogs, played with a litter of 5-week old “grand-pups”, and be-

tween my relatives—one auntie is 97 years old and great fun—and long-time mu-

tual canine-lovers, I had the usual splendid trip across this beautiful country of

ours. It’s always more fun with a dog!
