MISSION STATEMENT

In a faith-based preparatory environment,

Incarnate Word High School prepares confident young women dedicated to

academic excellence, Christian service and

social justice.

CORE VALUES

Academic Excellence Integrity Service

Community of Faith Compassion Stewardship

ACCREDITATION

Incarnate Word High School is fully accredited

with the Southern Association of Colleges

and Schools (SACS) and Texas Catholic

Conference Education Department (TCCED).

UIW Connection

Incarnate Word High School is a part of the

Brainpower Connection, and is affiliated with

University of the Incarnate Word.

Dear Shamrock Community,

September seemed to fly by, and we are beginning the month

of October which is brimming with activities for all our

Shamrock families. We start the month with Heritage Mass,

community rosary, College Connection, Open House for

Prospective students, and Casino Night. We invite all of you to

our special Outdoor Mass in celebration of the 135th

Anniversary of Incarnate Word High School. Following the

Mass, PTO will provide refreshments. I hope to see you at many

of these events. Our Shamrocks excel in service, academics, and

community activities. I hope you enjoy reading about the

amazing accomplishments of our outstanding student body.

Have a Blessed Year,

Principal Jennifer Salazar

Principal’s Perspective

It is “better to serve than be served,” but

sometimes we become too busy. During

these times, we just need to look up and see

the needs around us. Then we just stand

up, roll up our sleeves and choose to serve.

On Sept. 9, the American Red Cross Club

at IWHS was honored to receive the 2016

Young Philanthropist Award at the Tobin

Center-Red Carpet Centennial Gala.

Our ARC club members are a group of

driven, committed thinkers and doers with

different backgrounds and ethnicities who

come together to serve, to make an impact

in our community and to collaborate with

other local charitable partners.

We started out this school year by

distributing 1300 backpacks and school

supplies to Harlandale ISO students. Some

of our previous community outreach events

were conducting a fundraiser telethon for

the Eagle Pass Flooding with KSAT 12 &

Univision; sorting and packing 3000+ meals

at SA Food Bank; and distributing 500 toys

to SA military children at Joint Base San

Antonio.

Our ARC club would also like to

recognize the champions in our everyday

lives like our parents, our sponsor Dr.

Williams, Principal Salazar, teachers,

mentors, coaches and the many other

adults who take time to help, listen and

counsel, and who assisted us in obtaining

this award.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said,

"Everybody can be great because anybody

can serve." I am so proud and blessed to be

part of this great club. We aspire to turn

compassion into actions. Together, we can

make a difference.

Theatre Amazes with The Little Mermaid Production

Phonathon

Robotics Kick-Off

Every year the robotics

team has a kick-off party to

watch the video posted on

the First Tech Challenge’s

website and brainstorm

ideas. On Sept. 10 the

robotics teams comprised of

approximately 30 students

gathered in Mrs.

McChesney’s classroom

eager to learn what this

year’s game would hold.

This year’s mission is

called Velocity Vortex, and

it consists of yoga balls, IR

beacons, ramps, and wiffle

balls. The girls will then

take the ideas generated

from the kick-off to build

the robot to compete

against other teams in San

Antonio. This year each

team received a five

hundred dollar grant which

will help them buy the

needed supplies to carry

out their robotic designs.

Good Luck, Shambots

and Shambots2.0.

S ept. 15 – 17, the IWHS Theatre

Company presented Hans Christian

Anderson’s classic story of The Little

Mermaid to delighted audiences young and

old. With only five weeks of preparation,

the outstanding and outgoing cast and crew

worked extremely hard to put on an

amazing performance. This performance

made you feel like you were truly under the

sea. The story revolved around the love of

the Little Mermaid and the Prince. Their

tragic love, related by the King, the Queen

and the Little Prince showed the forbidden

relationships between two worlds

separated by one ocean. Down under the

sea, Merma and her 6 granddaughters

show the joys of being a mermaid and

living in the Sea Kingdom, while the Sea

Witch ruled over the darkness of the

kingdom. The show ends with a great

splash of hope that the Little Mermaid

would live on forever through the telling of

her story. With the help of the intrepid

costume tech club, all the crews, and the

direction of Mrs. Benavides, Mr. Weil, and

Ms. Allie Villareal, the show was a whale of

a good time.

Congratulations to the cast & crew

for an outstanding job!

O ur Phonathon is a part of IWHS’s

Annual Giving Campaign that

enables our current students to make a

heartfelt connection with alumnae by

phone. The initial contact is then followed

up with e-mail and mail solicitation

efforts that help update alumnae

information and increase our annual

giving dollars.

Thanks to an enthusiastic group of 101,

positively-charged student callers, we

connected with 223 donors in just three

days. Thank you to AT&T for supporting

us with cell phones and to the

outstanding support team of 20 fantastic

faculty. Special mention to faculty

member Jennifer Allison who cheered on

the girls all three nights and kudos to

alumna Yvonne Ybarra Grothues who

donated prizes for encouragement during

our evening event. Huge hugs and

wholehearted thanks to our IWHS PTO,

Grimaldi’s Pizzeria and La Madeleine for

providing amazing dinners each call

night. Together we made more than 3,000

calls securing more than $24,750

donations by phone. Our annual giving

campaign will continue, through May 31,

2017, online and by mail.

Way to Go, Shamrocks!!!

Around Campus

Library Happenings

T his month the IWHS Library

is proud to host “Voces

Americanas: A Celebration of

Latino Literature in the United

States,” an exhibit from

Humanities Texas. The exhibit was

developed by Dr. Roberta

Fernandez at the University of

Houston and covers the legacy and

heritage of Latino/a writing in the

United States. The exhibit is split

up into themes and regions, and

features dozens of authors and

their stories.

IWHS Library staff have added

interactive QR codes with videos,

voice clips, and even podcasts from

the featured authors, so students

can see these authors, and read

their work first-hand. They have

also added new authors, authors

who have won accolades for their

work such as Junot Diaz (The Brief

Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao,

Pulitzer Prize 2008) and Lin-

Manuel Miranda (Hamilton,

Pulitzer Prize 2015), and QR codes

to free e-books for students to

download to the exhibit.

Freshman @ the Library

IWHS will host its annual College

Connection on campus Saturday, Oct.

8, from 9 to 11:00 a.m. This event

exposes Sophomores, Juniors and their

families to the many facets of college

admissions. Presentation topics include

navigating school visits, and applying

for both admission and financial aid.

Students and their families must check

in at the registration table in the gym at 8:45 a.m. day of the event.

O n Sept. 27 and

29, the IWHS

Library had its

annual Freshman

Library

Orientation. Freshman classes, in

conjunction with both the Religion

Department and Fish Tips through the

Guidance Office, came to the library to

learn all about the resources available to

them, rules and guidelines for using the

library, and how to check out books and

digital materials. All Freshmen are now

allowed to use the library during the day as

an open lab, and we couldn’t be happier to

have them!

This amazing exhibit will be at the IWHS Library from September 19 through October 14!

Thank you to Humanities Texas for making it possible!

Ambassadors Revamped

Freshmen Retreat

T he Shamrock Ambassador Society has

undergone a few modifications for this

school year. Students had to submit an

application, be interviewed, and meet

academic eligibility requirements. Forty

girls were selected and attended training.

They were officially inducted to the

organization during a ceremony in the

McGowen Gymnasium on Sept. 20.

Sporting a distinctive blazer the

Ambassadors are assuming many duties.

They will host Shadows, assist at Open

House, help with recruitment by sending

cards and assisting with prospective

Freshmen. They are taking an active part

in the Middle School tours, helping with

preparations for the tours, guiding groups

around campus, providing explanations

and acting as liaisons on the buses.

The young ladies are eager to show our

8th grade visitors all that IWHS has to

offer, including: highlights of our ten

athletic teams and our twenty-plus clubs,

the rewards and opportunities of our

college preparatory programs, the extra

study time and tutoring opportunities, our

mod schedule and open labs offer, as well

as all the fun of life as a Shamrock.

O n September 8, the class of 2020

gathered together in the Sky Room of

the University of the Incarnate Word for a

day of reflection, prayer, and bonding at

their Annual Freshmen Retreat. The

theme of their retreat was the IWHS Core

Values. Advisors, with the help of the

peer ministers, presented and ran

activities with the themes of service,

integrity, compassion, stewardship,

community of faith and academic

excellence. The day ended with the

traditional letter to themselves which is

sealed and stored until they are presented

with it during their Senior retreat.

Dual Credit with UIW-Prep

The 2016 – 2017 UIW Prep Dual Credit

Study Abroad (DCSA) program is

underway! Are you a junior or senior with

a 3.5 GPA or higher and a desire for

international travel? If so, we are looking

for you! We are finalizing plans for a June

hearing from us soon regarding an

upcoming UIW Prep DCSA program

SAT & PSAT Campus

Administration

On Oct. 19, the Scholastic Aptitude Test

(SAT) and Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude

Test (PSAT) will be administered on

campus to all students in grades 9-11 and

grade 12, respectively. IWHS will register

all students and pay all required fees for

both exams.

In compliance with the Archdiocese

directive, the SAT will be offered to all

Seniors on this day and proctored by

faculty. Taking the exam in October is to

students’ advantage by allowing them to

apply for early admission to universities

and also, if desired, to improve their scores

before applying for regular admission.

The PSAT is a significant exam for all

underclassmen. It provides invaluable

practice for students before they take the

SAT. For Juniors, their scores on the PSAT

are used to determine National Merit

Scholars, Commended Students,

Achievement, and Hispanic Scholars. Many

universities offer financial aid and

scholarships for these recognized students.

For many Freshmen, the exam will

provide them with exposure to the exam to

prepare for junior year.

On exam day, students should have two

#2 pencils (no mechanical), their social

security number (optional) and zip code

memorized, a calculator with fresh

batteries, a snack, and a sweater. Students

must arrive on time. Any student arriving

after the exam has begun will be asked to

return home.

Incarnate Word High School Alumnae

Association has introduced a tie pin to

recognize students whose families have

made Incarnate Word High School a

family tradition. This tie pin features

interlocking Shamrocks that symbolize a

special Shamrock connection by a

grandmother, mother or aunt to a

granddaughter, daughter or niece. There

is a special significance and sense of pride

when students continue a family legacy.

To date we have 77 legacy students on

campus making up 14% of our student

population.

A sincere appreciation and thank you to

all our alumnae for making IWHS a

continued family tradition. If your student

is from a generational family of legacy and

did not receive her Shamrock Legacy pin,

please contact Cybele Bolado at

[email protected].

American Girl Dolls Wanted

The Alumnae Association is working with

the IWHS Costume Tech Club to create a

timeline with dolls depicting our uniform

fashion over the years. Starting with five

dolls to commemorate the decades from

1950 - to present day. Club members will

transform donated uniforms and select

materials to doll size then add accessories

and embellishments as finishing touches.

To complete this project we need your help

in donating American Girl Dolls and/or

funding to purchase additional dolls. The

dolls will make their debut during our

Open House and 135th Anniversary

Celebration on October 22 & 23rd and

continue to be on display at IWHS. Please

contact Mrs. Bolado at [email protected] if

you can help.

Dear Shamrock Community,

Welcome Fall! Your PTO is busy welcoming new families to our community. PTO

board members are very excited to meet and welcome these new families. The

Executive Board, Committee Chairs and Shamrock Network volunteers will be on

campus for Middle School tours October 5 - 7. PTO is pleased to be part of the Middle

School tours. As PTO members we love to share our experiences as a Shamrock

parent. PTO will also be present for the Fall Open House, Oct. 22. October is all about

recruiting for our community.

IWHS is celebrating 135 years of education and service by the Sisters of Charity of the

Incarnate Word. Join us in celebrating this special day by attending Mass on Oct. 23

at 6:00 p.m. PTO will be hosting a reception after the Mass. So mark your calendar.

This will be a beautiful way to gather as a community to honor the Sister’s Heritage.

April Fricke our Athletic Director will be coming back from the “Sister’s Trail” bike

ride on Oct. 20 at noon. She has teamed up with Christus Santa Rosa Mobile

Mammography. PTO is sponsoring her with a donation to fund early detection of

breast cancer. Our Shamrock Community will be very visible this weekend so come

out to share the Sister’s Heritage.

PTO Spirit Committee was busy in the annual Phonathon on Sept. 19 by providing

dinner for the girls. Thank you to Mary Sullivan, Spirit Committee chair, for picking

up dinner at Chipotle for our girls that evening. Then three days later on Oct. 22

Green Out was celebrated for our Varsity Volleyball team. Thank you to Neto Bolado

for picking up the items to take to Blossom Athletic Center so our PTO Spirit

Committee could spread the Shamrock Spirit. Shout out to JoAnn Harris and Donna

Schmueckle, Spirit Committee co-chairs, for passing out rally rags and selling Green

Out T-shirts. It was a great evening for our Shamrock Community to watch the

Varsity Volleyball team beat Antonian in 3 sets!!

PTO is currently receiving “Wish Lists” items submitted by each school department

and approved by Ms. Salazar. Thank You to all parents for contributing to the items

from your PTO fee paid at registration. Staff and Students Thank You!

Thank You to our Teacher Appreciation committee for providing a delicious boxed

lunch from Guillermos on Sept. 16 for faculty; it was a great treat.

The Campus Beautification committee is busy planning and preparing for all the

October activities, and we hope many you, our parents and friends, will set aside some

time on Saturday mornings in October to help out.

Once again many thanks to all PTO committees that make everything a success for

our Shamrock Community and to Miss Salazar who is open to new ideas while

keeping the Shamrock Tradition.

Sincerely,

Maria Resendiz, PTO President
