Musings on Our Strange New World

Chaverim,

Have you stepped outside today? It is one of those exquisite Florida

days. Living by the ocean I am blessed to be able to stand in my front

yard and smell the sea. Being outside all the senses are heightened.

The feelings of being alone evaporate as you realize that you are part of

the greater whole – the whole of everything.

The month of May in the life of our Temple is always an exciting month

– filled with celebrations: ending the school year, celebrating Torah on

Shavuot, graduation accolades and parties, Mother’s Day Brunches

and making plans for the summer ahead. So much has changed, so

much is different in this strange and disturbing new world.

Modeh Ani, thank you God for a new day of life, has taken on a whole

new meaning. My mantra for years had been to live each day as if it

were your last. This motto of mine has a fresh new face – and it is a

face covered with a mask. Have you noticed that when a person wears

a mask, you can really see their eyes? The eyes are the window to the

soul. It is through our eyes that others can see if we are happy or sad;

if we are angry or filled with love. And what we see is how we relate to

our world. How can you tell someone is really smiling? By looking into

their eyes. If the eyes are smiling, with little crinkly crows’ feet form-

ing, then the smile is from the person’s soul. I have seen so many

eyes over the past few weeks. Eyes filled with fear, eyes filled with de-

fiance, eyes filled with pain, hope, love even joy. Being able to see the

gamut of emotions in a person’s eyes has been one of the blessings of

the time we live in.

Always, looking for blessings in adversity, I am drawn to the stories of our environment healing

during this pandemic. Air pollution has lessened in many parts of the world, and the canals

in Venice are cleaner than they have been for the past 60 years. Gaia, our mother earth, is

finding ways to heal and is bringing us the healing we all need by just taking a walk outside.

And what of Zoom, YouTube, social media? Well, older folks were quick to condemn the mil-

lennials for being so obsessed with their phones and now our phones have become the primary

source of connection to the outside world. It is almost as if technology has expanded in such a

way that despite its sometimes frustrations, it is holding our world together. It has become

what Reb Zalman would say, a Spiritual Technology! Through its particular technology it has

enabled us to join our spirits, our souls across thousands of miles. Take the Shiva Minyon

services I have been officiating for over the past weeks. When everyone enters the zoom room

there is a great cacophony of greetings just like at the home of the mourners. We all settle

down to prayer and then the sharing begins. We end with song and in a click say goodbye, but

the warmth and love linger. This is the same experience I have been having teaching classes

online. We are all connected in this strange and holy way and God is always invited to join us.

This morning I was teaching a Bat Mitzvah girl in my Zoom Room and we were studying the

Morning Blessings of Daily miracles. Yes, that is what they are called – the daily miracles: be-

ing able to get up, stand, get dressed, thank God, start your day – little miracles but miracles,

nevertheless. May each of us during this most difficult time, find the miracles embedded in

your lives and may we see the world with new and open eyes.

Loving Blessings,

Rabbi Pat

FROM THE TEMPLE PRESIDENT

Dear Congregants, The events of the past six weeks have had great impact on all of our lives. I encour-age each of you to reach out to your Temple Family should you need help. Our Rab-bi and I, along with temple staff and volunteers, can be contacted anytime. The effects of the Covid-19 Coronavirus have posed an acute problem for Temple Is-rael. With the move to our new facility scheduled for late summer the Finance com-mittee has been carefully considering the management of resources to ensure a smooth working transition from the old building to the new building. I want to reit-erate that we have enough funds to finish the building and some leftover for Capital Expenses. We have already seen a significant erosion in dues and donation revenue; this is not surprising given the hardships that many congregants are likely enduring. It’s a time when some congregants are having trouble putting food on the table or maybe keeping a roof over their heads. This has forced a sobering assessment of how we do business as a Temple. Simply put: how do we make ends meet for the period of May through August. In this period of distress, the Temple and Rabbi Hickman need to be there for the congregation. At the same time, this is a business, and we have expenses and sala-ries that must be paid. To date we have sought after and received relief on bills from some of our vendors. In addition, we are also actively pursuing an SBA loan associat-ed with the recent stimulus bill. We also understand that this is not the appropriate time to ask our congregants to increase their dues payments…in amount or frequen-cy. We do ask that if you are financially able then please continue your dues pay-ments because they are the lifeblood of this temple. We always accept donations, in any amount and are grateful when we do get them (maybe even more so over the summer). We still need to take steps to provide assurance of service, ability to pay bills, and certainty in paying our employees for the time they have worked. Therefore, Temple Israel’s Board of Directors has voted to implement a plan that we believe carries us through to our new building, and I’d like to take this opportunity to make you aware of some of the details.

The plan is flexible enough to accommodate the receipt, or lack thereof, of Small Business Administration loan proceeds through the Payroll Protection Act. We have filed a claim and, if we receive the federal aid, all salaried and hourly workers will re-main employed throughout the summer. However, if we do not receive the loan, a furlough of all employees will occur during the month of June. Rabbi Hickman and her team will be back at work in July in preparation for the High Holidays. It should also be stated that in the event of emergency need, Rabbi Hickman will be available during the furlough. We will continue streaming Friday night Shabbat services on our YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/templeisraelofbrevard) and are considering options if a furlough comes in to play. One upcoming change that doesn’t rely on whether or not we receive the Payroll Protection loan is our decision to vacate the current temple building by a target date of June 1. The reality is that the temple is closed and we are operating completely online these days, and will continue that way well into summer. Yet, by staying in the building we are responsible for electric, water, phones, internet, security, office ma-chines, and other ancillary costs for a building we are not going to use and, in fact, will be leaving permanently. It is past time to retire these un-needed operating costs and financial liability for the building maintenance. Accordingly, during the month of May, we will be planning, packing, and moving items into storage, for their eventual return to us in our new building. More updates will follow in the weeks ahead, but for now, let me end this message with this thought: If you have the means, and you can pay your dues, please do so. If you can’t, and you need relief, please ask. Donations are always welcome. Be safe, be careful, and be kind to the people that you love. Larry Fineberg President

WOMEN OF TEMPLE ISRAEL

Women of Temple Israel / Sisterhood donates to Temple, plans future events

From Joy Inventasch, Cheryl Mendelsohn and Diana van den Boogaard – your WTI / Sister-

hood Presidents

WTI / Sisterhood held its first planning meeting via Zoom on April 21, aided by Rabbi Hick-

man. It was great to see each other and welcome some members who normally can’t make

the Wednesday morning time. We might have to meet this way more often!

Treasurer Rose Schoenfeld reports that our bank balances are healthy right now, so we are donating $2000 to the Temple. She will deliver the check to the Temple. This is our first do-nation this year; following $1500 in November, 2019. For 2019 and 2020 WTI has donated over $5000.00 to Temple Israel.

We had started planning an arts and craft fair for our new temple. Many members are

artists or have a crafting hobby or business. The fair would be for all temple members and

perhaps others in the community. People would rent a table and sell their handmade

items, with refreshments available. Many issues such as pricing and publicity need to be

resolved. If you want to join our committee, please email or call Joy Inventasch, har-

[email protected], 321-253-8579.

Our pizza and movie nights were popular this year. We are looking into having a Netflix par-

ty this month or next. To join one needs a computer and a Netflix subscription. We can

watch a show or movie together and share comments. Several of us have enjoyed

“Unorthodox,” a 4-part series about a young Hasidic New York woman who escapes to Eu-

rope. Please email dianaboogaard@gmail for more information, or to suggest other films.

Cheryl Mendelsohn and Joy Inventasch have been busy making masks. If you NEED A

MASK, please let us know. Or if you make masks or can help others, please let us know. Do-

nations to WTI / Sisterhood for the masks are also welcome.

Please stay safe and keep in touch!

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL BEIT MIDRASH

Well, we’ve had three sessions of online Sunday school, via Rabbi Pat’s Zoom room, in the Temple Israel Beit Midrash. The first session took place right before Passover started, and it was fun watching a video, singing songs, and talking about our favorite Passover traditions. At our last online meeting, we talked about Shalom Bayit, or “Peace in the House”. It was a very timely discussion, be-cause we’re all finding out that distance learning at home with siblings & parents takes a lot of work! This is a new world through which we’re all navigating. Thank G-d for things like Zoom rooms, Google chats, YouTube streams & other ways we can stay connected. These are the last Sunday School classes for the school year: Sunday 5/3 Sunday 5/17 - last (virtual) day of school! I pray that good health is in all of your homes, and can’t wait until I can see your sweet faces again in person! Donna Lack 321-848-1906 [email protected]

PRAYER/POEM

May we who are merely inconvenienced Remember those whose lives are at stake. May we who have no risk factors Remember those most vulnerable. May we who have the luxury of working from home Remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent. May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close Remember those who have no options. May we who have to cancel our trips Remember those that have no safe place to go. May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market Remember those who have no margin at all. May we who settle in for a quarantine at home Remember those who have no home. As fear grips our country, let us choose love. During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, Let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors. Amen.
