PRESIDENT’S DECEMBER MESSAGE Editor’s Notes Page 3

December is here. This year seems to have gone by awfully fast partially because we were kept busy with all the exiting activities as we celebrated the 60th Anniversary of our club! However, even though this year sped by so fast, it did not go by as fast as the last 24 months during which I proudly served as president of this fine club. It seems like it was only yesterday when I assumed the presidency of our club, and now, in what to me was the blink of an eye, it will soon be over. December 12th will end my term as president and our new president, Ron Mitro, will be taking over the “steering wheel”.

It has been a very exciting term for me and I enjoyed every minute of it. When I was about to assume my presidency, I was told that there would be many things to, that this would take a lot of preparations and organizing, and to get ready because I would have a lot of work to do during my term, in order to make it all happen. Well, that person got two out of three correct. Yes, there were a huge number of activities that we put on for you to enjoy during the last two years, and yes, they involved a lot of preparations and organizing. However, he wasn’t quite right about the third one. I agree that there was a lot of work required to make everything happen, however, I did not have to do it all. Actually, the lions share bulk of the work was done by the members of our fine Executive Board. I could not have asked for a better group to support me as president and to support our club as they made everything happen. To all of you on the board, THANK YOU! I am sure that Ron will enjoy the same level of cooperation and help that I received.

During early November, we completed another extremely successful and fun Memory Lane Event at the Miami International Auto Show, then, on November 19th, we held our General Membership Meeting where we elected our new president and the members of the executive board for 2016. Please check our website for the full story and pictures of Memory Lane and for the results of the vote. I did give away some of those results already, but you will have to check our website for the rest.

We still have one more activity left to conclude our 60th Birthday Celebration, the Holiday Party in December. This year, our organizer Manny has planned quite a few exiting things for you among which will be the swearing in of the new board members and president. Don’t miss it! Please note that we will not have a regular membership meeting during the month of December, we will instead hold our annual Holiday Party on December 12th so please mark your calendars! Also, mark your calendars for January 21, 2016 so that you will not miss the first

membership meeting presided over by our new president Ron Mitro. Ron asked me to remind you about our concept of the light refreshments that we provide at our monthly meetings. Manny, who is responsible for providing the food for our meeting has a special interpretation of “light refreshments”; to him it means “bring a LOT of food”! Our meetings are now held at the Miami Friends Meeting house, located at 1185 Sunset Drive in South Miami (across from Sunset Elementary). Our Second Vice President, Manny, has been doing an AWESOME job of bringing some excellent (and plentiful) food for us to enjoy. In addition, Philip now goes in about an hour before everyone and turns on the AC so it’s nice and cool when we all get in at 7:30. If you have any suggestions for a new location, please call me, we are always looking for new ideas. Please check our website or stay tuned to the emails for the details on our monthly speakers. Happy Motoring!

Oscar Castro, President AACA South Florida Region

Here we are in the middle of a busy holiday season and the middle of our car season, the end of one administrative year and the beginning of another set of

officers and directors. Hopefully you will spend quality time with friends and family and/or have time to relax, catch your breath, recharge, and be ready for the new year.

I trust that you are happy with the South Florida Region events and will participate as much as possible in 2016. As many of the old-timers know, an antique car club only exists and thrives because it’s a fun organization that offers a variety of ways to enjoy the hobby. Our website, newsletter, car shows/events, general meetings, and emails are the ways we keep you informed. Do continue to submit stories, photos or ideas for Sidelights. Don’t forget, Sidelights is your newsletter, a perk of being a member of the South Florida Region.

Be sure that Saturday, January 16 and Sunday, January 17, 2016 are on your calendar for the annual Art Deco weekend car show on South Beach, Miami Beach. See the enclosed/attached registration form for all the information you need.

Whether you are staying home or traveling, be safe this holiday season and let’s keep A.A.C.A South Florida Region

on your roadmap.

Copies of the treasurer’s report were passed out to all board members to review and picked up after reviewing. Mel Mann made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report. Ron Mitro seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Membership Report: Philip Williams informed us that renewals are going very well and we currently have 139 members. He added that Larry Epstein has become a Lifetime Member.

Cars in the Garden: Chico Goldsmith informed us that the Sunshine Corvette Club had a very good showing with a few cars missing. Jean Hawa informed us that we had a total of 121 registered cars with 30 no-shows and overall the show went very well. Chico Goldsmith suggested that we consider a $5 dollar fee to perhaps make car owners more serious about registering and then the money could go to a charity. Jean Hawa mentioned that we received positive

feedback from several people. Sunday’s attendance was the highest it has been for the month and Fairchild staff member Gaby Orihuela was very pleased to see so many families showing up for the event. Jean Hawa thanked Ira Shapiro, Philip Williams, Bob Squier, Maurice Hawa, Luis & Maria Quevedo, Chico Goldsmith, Gary Shanock and all other volunteers.

Memory Lane: Mel Mann informed us we are still on schedule for the show November 6th through November 15th, 2015 which will be the same routine as previous shows. The main entrance will be located to your immediate right walking into the event. Mel Mann mentioned that volunteers can carpool if possible and that Ken Hilton will again be the head of security for the show. We have ten cars in Havana Classics and twelve cars in Memory Lane. If you would like to volunteer, check our website for more information and contact Bob Squier. Mel Mann made a motion to approve the budget for Memory Lane, Jim Lowery seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Progressive Dinner: Mel Mann informed us that the Progressive Dinner was a success and Manny Garcia added that everyone had a great time and we had plenty of food. We would like to thank Guy Lewis for sharing his home and cars for the event.

Holiday Party: Manny Garcia reminded us that we will be having our Holiday Party upstairs at La Isla (formerly Havana Harry’s) on Kendall Drive for December 12, 2015 at starting at 12:30 PM. Everyone will bring a wrapped gift in the $15 - $20 range for the gift exchange. Oscar Castro and Manny Garcia thanked Luis Quevedo for sponsoring the donation of a three-day two-night stay at Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, to be raffled at the Holiday Party!

Art Deco Weekend: Mel Mann informed us that we are set for the Art Deco Weekend, he attended another meeting

regarding the event and it went smoothly. He informed us of the approved zoning variance for the vendors being moved further back on the side. This means more space for the public to view our cars.

Other Club Business: -Mike Penn reminded us that the University of Miami is looking for cars for their Homecoming parade on November 6, 2015.

-Chico Goldsmith mentioned that December 17 will be the Sunshine Corvette Club 2015 Holiday Celebration & Caravan for the students of Neva King Cooper Education Center.

-Philip Williams suggested ways to thank retiring board member Norman Kassoff for his guidance, calmness, and leadership. FLORIDA LICENSE PLATES (PART 2) Page 5

M.R. Simmons of the Canaveral Region AACA (Cocoa Beach, Florida) has graciously allowed the publication of his historical research of Florida License Plates

INTRODUCTION: At the May 2010 meeting of the Antique Auto Club of Cape Canaveral / Canaveral Region AACA there was a lady selling a number of old Florida License plates. Also, there were a few comments made in the meeting about the county numbers, prefixes, etc. on these older plates. It was apparent that only a few had a good knowledge of the history of Florida plates. The following is a brief history of the automobile plates of Florida. These photographs were gleaned from various digital sources.

FIRST SERIES OF STATE PLATES ( 1918-1937 ) continued from the November 2015 issue of Sidelights.

1930: Beginning in 1930 and up through 1955 the size of Florida plates was set at 5-1/8” x 11-7/8”. For 1930 and 1931 all passenger car plates had only digits. When over 3 digits they were separated with a dash (i.e., 123-456 implying 123,456). Trucks had the vertical word “Truck” on the left side while other commercial plates were identified across the top with “For Hire”, “Trailer”, “Dealer”, and “Official”.

1931

1932

1933

1934 & 1935: In 1934 and 1935 there were locking tab types referred to as the “burglar-proof” tags. These tags had various letters for classes. The “Official” (i.e., “X”) and the “Dealer” (i.e., “M”) plates did not have the locking tabs. In 1936 there was a special issue of “Army” and “Navy” plates. The “T” was used in this period for passenger cars; however, in 1933 only the “T” was used for “Trucks”; The “W” could have been a heavy car; The “X” is probably a State vehicle. Note that the truck tag below (GK15674) has an incorrect “W” weight tab.

Cars in the Garden by Bob Squier

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, one of the premiere preserves of rare and exotic tropical plants and trees in the world, doesn’t sound like the place for a car show with over 100 antiques and Corvettes. But on Sunday, October 25, as the sun came up over the gardens, all manner of antique cars from AACA South Florida and Corvettes from the Sunshine Corvette Club glided in under the boughs and leaves and parked throughout the garden in settings that mutually enhanced the cars and the foliage. We were blessed with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 80’s and a nice breeze. We here in South Florida hope this kind of weather will last until late spring because this show marks the beginning of our very busy winter car show season.

Co-chairs, Jean Hawa and Chico Goldsmith, are very thankful for the help from several people. A big thank you goes to the following: Registration – Philip Williams, Ira Shapiro, Gary Shanock and Maria Quevedo; Show field layout and signage – Maurice Hawa; Antiques Parking – Maurice Hawa, John Jones, Bob Squier, Luis Quevedo, Jon Weiss; Corvette Parking –Cliff Gibson; Counting ballots – Jean Hawa, Chico Goldsmith, and Cliff Gibson; Refreshments – Jean Hawa. We are most grateful for the support from the following: Elite Aerospace for providing the trophies and refreshments and Corvette Stainless Steel Brakes and Dion Generators for providing the dash plaques.

We had a wonderful time enjoying the weather, the garden, the cars, and the people. Awards were given for the antique cars by decade and for the Corvettes by series. There also was a People’s Choice award voted on by the spectators who came to see the cars and the garden. Best of Show for Antiques went to Sam Huttig with his 1911 White Touring GA.(see below)

This was the third time our two car clubs have been invited by the staff of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Attendance records indicated that 1100 visitors came to Fairchild, the highest amount of visitors recorded for the month. Each of the trams was filled with riders and over 780 visitors walked through Wings of Tropics (the exotic butterfly conservatory). Some of the comments made were “the car show brought many families to the garden, the show was fun, the car owners respected the garden, and the cars were beautiful”.

PROGRESSIVE DINNER STORY & PHOTOS BY BOB SQUIER

We held our annual Progressive Dinner on Saturday, October 31, 2015. Even though it was Halloween, only three members showed up in costume and we had only four antique cars make the trip to the three destinations. Still, it was a festive evening with good food and even better company with conversations ranging from memories of events past to car talk to theatre and to remembrances of childhood. All in all it was a very enjoyable evening. Thanks to our hosts, Philip Williams (appetizers), Guy Lewis (entrée) and Bob Squier (desserts), and to Mel Mann, Manny Garcia, Millie Valiente, Ira and Susan Shapiro and Maurice and Jean Hawa for making this whole production work.

Memory Lane & Havana Classics 2015

SUBMITTED BY: Mel Mann, Show Chairman

For the 21st year, the South Florida Region presented the heritage car displays at the Miami International Auto Show held at the Miami Beach Convention Center. I have had the privilege of chairing this show since its inception in 1995. Thank you to the co-chairs Ira Shapiro and Bob Squier, without whom this event is not possible. Many thanks to all the club volunteers who came out to support this event.

This year, we displayed 22 spectacular vehicles from all eras of automotive history, and over 650,000 spectators attended. This is the finest opportunity to showcase our hobby and share our precious metal (and fiberglass) with as many people as possible in one location. There is no chance for rain at this show!

We presented two displays. One was a unique setting reminiscent of a Cuban boulevard called “Havana Classics”, created by Telemundo/NBC Miami with vehicles from the pre-Castro era. Our second display, Memory Lane, featured cars from the 1950’s to the 1990’s. This whole process begins during the summer and ends when the last car leaves the convention center. From over 200 applications fewer than two dozen vehicles are selected for their condition and historical significance. The majority of the vehicles are AACA National winners.

From a very rare 1932 Chevrolet to a seldom seen 1991 GMC, every vehicle invoked a strong sense of nostalgia. Many of the antique cars displayed in Memory Lane are the inspirations for the newest nameplates being shown at the auto show. For example, the 1958 VW Beetle featured in our display is the styling inspiration for the newest VW Beetle being shown at the new car display.

Every car brought a story from the spectators…a Sunday drive in their grandfather’s ’56 Mercury or getting their driver’s license in a ’72 Buick...our display took everyone on a trip down memory lane. The show is held in the heart of the Art Deco district of South Miami Beach, and many of our cars fit right in with the architecture of this historic period of South Florida history.

A special thank you to Guy and Loyda Lewis for sharing three terrific cars from their prized collection in support of the show.

While every car in Memory Lane is a winner, this year’s Best of Show trophy was awarded to Michael Merlo for his outstanding 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS. This special award is dedicated in memory of Charles Sebastian, our club founder.

Page 12 LAKE MIRROR CLASSIC AUTO FESTIVAL

BY BOB SQUIER AND JEAN HAWA Eleven of our members drove or trailered their cars 235 miles to one of the finest car shows in Florida, the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival held on Saturday, October 17, 2015 in downtown Lakeland. Founded in 1999 by Ford Heacock of Heacock Insurance, this concours-quality, invitation-only production has grown in popularity with the support of over thirty local businesses and 200+ volunteers .

Events for the 16th Annual Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival, a free community event benefiting the Friends of Lake Mirror Fund, started Friday evening with a hotrod car show, outdoor concert, and hot rod parade. The main event on Saturday, the Concours d’Elegance, featured 100 classic and collectible cars, motorcycles, bicycles, trucks, and wooden boats encircling Lake Mirror. Replacing the Honorary Chairman was the “Auto Biographies” which featured six automobiles with interesting and unique stories. They were the 1929 Tracta A, 1929 duPont G LeMans Roadster, 1930 Sampson Miller Indy Roadster, 1933 “Eddie Hall” Bentley, 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540k Roadster and a 1960 Chevrolet Corvette (the first Corvette to win its class at LeMans). The open car show took place on the streets of downtown Lakeland with over 600 collector and classic cars. Even though the Downtown Auto Festival is not judged, sponsor favorites were presented with ribbons and prizes. Each year a display of the Golden Anniversary Group features cars celebrating their 50th Anniversary. They include cars such as the Pontiac 2+2, Ford Galaxie XL500 and Sunbeam Tiger. Music. A marquee displays miscellaneous information such as events, entertainment, sports, cost of living, etc. of 1965. The highlight of the day is the Awards Ceremony of Concours d’Elegance trophies and Lee Iacocca Award presentation. An optional event on Sunday (Oct. 18) concluded the weekend. The Hemmings Road Tour has pre-registered participants on an early morning drive through the countryside of Hemmings County. Members John and Cecilia Layzell enjoyed it . Left: 1947 Ford COE: From a strictly aesthetic point of view, a cab over truck should not be considered attractive However, even with the grotesquely stunted lines and wrong proportions, many people are attracted to them.

This restored COE sports its original flathead engine, 4-speed crash box, and 2-speed rear axle.

1929 Ruxton Sedan:

A beautiful example of American front wheel drive engineering and was the first Ruston to be assembled at the Moon Motor Car Company in

St. Louis. The engine is a Continental Straight 8 with speeds capable of 70 mph. Only 99 Ruxtons were produced between 1929 and 1930. Only 18 Ruxtons have survived.

Why AACA?

By Don Barlup, President

Growing up in the mid 40’s and 50’s, my first recollection of an automobile was my parents 1939 Chevy Business Coupe. My younger brother and I sat on the two jump seats in the rear. In 1950 a new Plymouth graced the driveway. My mother insisted on a 2-door sedan so that her boys would not accidentally fall out of the rear doors. To my parents a car was a necessary form of transportation. Nothing more. Nothing less. They would have been 100 years old this year.

Fast forward to 1971. Carol and I purchased our first old car, a 1940 Pontiac 4-door Sedan for the grand sum of $300.00, a lot of money for a young couple with a son born a year earlier. We still have that car and enjoy an occasional drive for ice cream in it.

It was black and the original owner had a problem backing in and out of his garage, hence four NOS fenders and chrome were in order. It needed new tires so, four 600x16 truck tires were purchased – I had no idea that vintage car tires were available.

I polished it up and we heard about an antique car show at a now long closed amusement park called Williams Grove, near where we used to live close to Mechanicsburg, PA.

We were apprehensive to say the least! The car was original and far from shiny (this was prior to fender and chrome replacement). We unceremoniously arrived to see about 50 gorgeous and shiny cars. We almost turned around and left, as we felt that our car was not going to be welcomed.

Turns out, that we were welcomed by the other car owners, who were much older than we were. Back then they were looking for younger members, as we are today.

We had a great time and joined AACA and Gettysburg Region (who was hosting the show) that day and never looked back!

Why AACA? Because we were welcomed and encouraged to get involved. Incidentally, the National dues were $10.00/year and the Region dues were $2.00/year. That was over 10% of my weekly income in 1971, but the best investment I ever made!

The only changes since 1971 are the dues and the eligible vehicles. It is our job to continue to encourage membership and involvement in AACA – it starts at the local level. Have you signed up a new member recently? Who knows, that person could be your Region or National President some day.

The future of AACA is in your hands!
