Increase in retail orders asign of cautious optimismThe President of the Canadian RecordingIndustry Association (CRIA), Brian Robertson, says he's not ready to throw a party for one goodmonth of retail figures.

Industry statistics show a 17% increase inthe number of CD and cassette orders from retailoutlets for the month of September. "There wasa lot of product ordered and I'm cautiouslyoptimistic that there won't be a lot of returns, but you can't predict anything in this business. It's still a very volatile market and a recessionhangover is still out there."

Robertson attributes the Septemberincrease to a lot of superstar product, like GunsN' Roses and Prince, being released around thesame time. "I wasn't surprised that it was a goodmonth, the challenge will be to keep thosefigures up through to the Christmas season."

A friendly conversation??? Just in casesomeone thought that was a confrontation at arecent record launch, it was just three peoplehaving a friendly conversation and about to goat each other's throats. Just arguing about howlong a "king for life" should reign. (EC: I betthere are a lot of people who think you'rekidding!!!) Just talking about "how to win friendsand influence people."

About that Charlie and Di gala ... ! Whatturned out to be the best kept secret, should haveremained that way. The federal government -sponsored gala for the Royals in Ottawa waswhat one record person called "a nationaldisgrace." Howcum they had to bring, at publicexpense, that bunch of no talent Canadians, whoare living in Hollywood, to be representative ofthe best we have in Canada's entertainmentfield. Maybe Bryan Adams wasn't availableand maybe Anne Murray and Bruce Cockburn

were on tour, but come on .. . give me a break.Just look at the charts and you don't have to betoo bright to discover who would put on adynamite show. The only saving factor was theperformance by Celine Dion. Leonard Rambeau, who was in the audience, tells me Celine was thestar of the show. She communicated an honestand humble feeling of wanting to be there. Shewas performing, because she really wanted to,and that's a professional plus. Too bad thereweren't more Celine Dions. It must have beentough to have been the only, non -egotisticalperformer. (EC: At public expense . . . all theway from Hollywood yet . . . !) It seems we werespared even more expense, however. Severalother ex-patriate hacks were apparentlyapproached, but they declined because theyreportedly wouldn't take part in a concert, evena command performance, that our beloved PrimeMinister was involved in. (EC: Whatdisappointed me was that he didn't even do aduet with David Foster. I guess there wasn'tenough room on stage for both of them . . . !)

That community spirit ... ! My deep troughin Ottawa/Hull tells me there's concern at theCRTC about the possibility of more than acouple of radio stations turning in their licences. They aren't the one -owner variety . . . thestations that are drawing concern belong to achain, with another chain in the wings. (EC:They've experienced it in the record business.Bigger isn't necessarily better . . . and a lot ofgreat talent bites the dust . . . !)

Is there a message there . . . ? After 24years, a farewell party with a cash bar . ? Yougotta be kidding. (EC: That's the Americanway. . . !)

A nice touch . . . ! After Anne Murray'sThursday concert at Toronto's O'Keefe, Balmurand Capitol had a little "say hello to" party forAnne. What a classy affair ... desserts, and lotsof them, mineral water and tea or coffee. Oneobserver, whose nose tells me he likes thebooze -type of parties, told me on his way out,'that's the first record party I remember walkingaway from.' (EC: There's a message therewouldn't you say . . . ?) By the way, I've beentold that Anne had been invited to five functionsfor the Royals, but had to decline because of thepressure of touring. Don't go away. How's thisfor some good time news? Anne's five dates atthe O'Keefe attracted an audience of 13,986 outof a possible 16,115, which works out to 87percent. Tickets ranged from $23.00 to $39.00plus the 7 percent GST. The five days grossed$470,534.64 Canadian. (EC: Would you expectthem to pay her in yen?)

I got so excited over the new Liona Boydalbum, I mentioned in myreview that SomethingSpecial, a Liona Boyd original which had beenrecorded by Kimberly Richards, was on thealbum. It's not. It should have been. It's too late.(EC: Is that a retraction . . . ?)

Celine Dion is hitbound . ! It's not veryoften that I'll go out on a limb, but the blood, sweat and tears, went into the making ofCeline Dion is about to pay off. Celine's newsingle, Beauty And The Beast, a duet with PeaboBryson, has hit written all over it, to borrow awell -used phrase. In fact, I don't have to borrow

that well -used phrase. Listen to it, this Canadianis on a roll .. . big time! (EC: Yeah! Big time ?)

Great stuff from Peter Howell . . . ! I'venever enjoyed the Toronto Star more sincePeterHowell helped shed the "navel gazing" imageof some of his former entertainment writers. Helatches onto some real meaty stuff. His coverageof the battle between Bob Seger and Rod Stewartover who had the rights first, to Tom Waits'Downtown Train, was exceptional. There's lotsgoing on in the industry, and obviously Howellhas some pretty heavy connections. (EC:That' swhat counts . . . connections!)

Have you noticed ... ! In Quebec, Coca-Colauses Quebec artists, while in the rest of thecountry they use foreigners. (EC: Hey! Withfree trade now being extended to Mexico, watchout . . . !)

What's a Juno worth ??? I read in the paperthat the original Genie Award had been stolen. It was valued at $200,000. My question is: whatwould the original Juno Award be worth . . . inview of the fact that the Junos were the originalawards? (EC: Whose idea was it to rate theseawards in the first place???)

The RPM Cup is safe ... I How much is theRPM Cup worth? Remember, one year it wascupnapped and found on the top of a lamp postin Ottawa? It must be worth a lot . . . maybe acouple hundred dollars worth of deletes, wouldyou say? (EC: That's how much it was ransomedfor . . . ?) Anyway, it's safe, once again, andadding a lot of class to the lobby at WarnerMusic on Birchmount. (EC: Are you tipping offthe cupnappers . . . ?)

Confirm or deny . . . After moving to theApple Core . . . that not -so -bigwig has beenpromoted to A&R Cancon only in a companythat has little or no Cancon. (EC: Public enemynumber one!!!)

The song, which iscausing a commotion at the Toronto station, pokes fun at Ontario Premier Bob Rae. Thestation's Miriam Sakoor reports that since thesong's introduction on the Breakfast Club, "it'sbeen the most requested song on the air." COVER STORY - by David Pierson

"Monster" sales keep Honeymoon Suite on topHoneymoon Suite has sold over a million recordsin Canada. That kind of figure alone wouldeasily put them into the top five of Canadianbands without a doubt. But it's not only theirretail and concert draw numbers that areimpressive.

Honeymoon Suite has also worked withthe biggest and best producers of today's musicscene. Bruce Fairbairn (Aerosmith, Bon Jovi)

MIK i: 1-11111by Tim Evans

Adams duel No. 1s! Can't Stop This ThingWe Started becomes the first song in over tenyears to drop out of the No. 1 spot and thenregain it. It also gives Bryan Adams the top songand album in the same week. He is only the thirdperson to accomplish that this year. Sting turnedthe trick back in March and Madonna had bothNo. 1 s in February for one week each. Lastyear, three artists (Wilson Phillips, Sinead O'Connor, and Phil Collins) had both the top song andalbum a total of 11 weeks.

Top Canadian already? Four months agoBryan Adams still hadn't had a No. 1 song inCanada. Now he has held the No. 1 position formore weeks than any other Canadian. Can'tStop This Thing should hold on for at least onemore week. That would mean Adams will haveheld the No. 1 position a total of 12 weeks, which would be enough to move him into eighthplace on the list of artists holding the top spot themost numberof weeks. Name the Canadian whohas had the most No. 1 songs.

Almost a top add tie ... It was very close, butKeep Coming Back from Richard Marx narrowlyedged out Genesis' No Son Of Mine to get thetop entry this week. Keep Coming Back debutsat No. 36. That's only one spot higher than NoSon Of Mine. Both are the first releases fromnew albums. Not to be ignored is the new releasefrom The Grapes Of Wrath, You May Be Right. It also has a very high entry at No. 51.

Hard to pronounce, easy to like. Thecombination of Zucchero and Paul Young havethis week's biggest jump on the Hit Trackschart. Senza Una Donna (Without A Woman)climbs 35 spots to No. 34. Zucchero (pronouncedZoo -care -oh) may be a stranger to the charts, but Paul Young certainly isn't. He hit the top in1985 with Every Time You Go Away and justlast year he reached No. 4 with a remake of OhGirl.

Commitments up again. The Commitmentssoundtrack originally peaked at No. 15 a fewweeks ago solely on the strength of the movie. Now radio is giving various tracks exposure. Asa result, the soundtrack moves up to No. 6.

Snowbird wasn't one of them! TheCanadianwho has hit No. 1 more times than any other isAnne Murray. She has reached the top fivetimes so far (Cotton Jenny, Danny's Song, LoveSong, You Needed Me,and I Just Fall In LoveAgain). The Guess Who had four No. 1 songs.Blood, Sweat & Tears, Corey Hart, GordonLightfoot, and Paul Anka all have three.

and Ted Templeman (Van Halen, DoobieBrothers) have produced previous Suite albumsand tracks. Now, in a collaboration with PaulNorthfield, (Rush, Queensryche) the band hasjust released its fourth studio album, MonstersUnder The Bed.

Suite keyboardist, Ray Coburn, explainedhow the band came to work with Northfield."We wanted to produce it ourselves but it isgood to have an outside ear. But we didn't wanttoo many people around because then you canhave "the too many cooks" syndrome. But Paulwas available and totally sympathetic to ourneeds and was open to co -producing it with us,so everything worked out great."

Monster was recorded at Le Studio inMorin Heights, just outside of Montreal, whichwas perfect for the bands' needs as there wereno distractions and they got most of the recordingcompleted in two months.

The album title comes from something

Standard makes bid forEdmonton stationsStandard Broadcast has made a bid to acquiretwo more Alberta radio stations. Theannouncement was made jointly by Gary Slaight,President Standard Radio and Robert P. Lovell,Public Relations Manager Electrohome Limited.

"An agreement in principle" has reportedlybeen reached, "subject to CRTC approval anddefinitive legal documentation," for the sale ofElectrohome Limited 's Edmonton radio stationsCFRN (AM 1260) and CJKE FM to StandardRadio Inc., a wholly -owned subsidiary ofStandard Broadcasting Corporation Limited.

Standard had, on Sept. 6, announced theacquisition, again, subject to CRTC approval,of Calgary radio stations CFCN (AM 106) andCJAY FM, from Maclean Hunter Limited (RPM- Sept. 21/91).

Standard Radio owns and operates sevenradio stations in Ontario and Quebec andapparently, has been planning expansion intoWestern Canada for some time.

An application to the CRTC is to be filedin November. A public hearing is expectedearly next year.

that guitarist, Derry Grehan, came up with. "ltwas a bit of a pressure situation and it justseemed like a natural title, so we went with it."

When Honeymoon Suite came together inthe early '80s, they had a ready made name inmind, being from the Niagara Falls area,"honeymoon capital of the world." Theyreleased their debut album in 1984 and went onto win the 1986 Juno aware for Band of theYear. The band also won the Gold Award forsongwriting at the Tokyo Song Festival in thesame year.

Suite has had several chart successes in theUS and to coincide with that, have toured theStates extensively, sometimes opening for suchplatinum -selling artists like ZZ Top, Aerosmithand Heart, and sometimes headlining their ownshows.

Suite's lead singer and guitarist, JohnnieDee, explained the bands' touring philosophy."We like those warm places in the winter likeTexas, Florida and California. But there's someplaces in Ohio and Michigan that are just greatrock n' roll towns and we like to play there too."

However, this time out, the Suite will beplaying Canada first on their Monsters tour."We've usually wound playing the States andCanada back and forth. But this time, I think,we'll be starting out East and going right acrossCanada to the west coast," Dee said.

As for the actual touring itself, the bandsays it can't wait to get back in front of a liveaudience again. "Playing live is the ultimatebuzz for us," Dee said. "We've played all kindsof places. Playing clubs is fun, because it'sintimate but then we've played places like theCalgary Saddledome which is also fun becauseit's a big audience. I'm just looking forward togetting out there, because it's been a long twoyears getting this album together and we'reready to rock."

So, here we are . . . ruled by the illegitimate

Like it was ... like it is ... sixties vs ninetiesby Ronald T. Robinson

Back in the mid -sixties, Top 40 radio was ararity. And why not? It was targeted at kids. There was a lot more money to be made servingthe older demographics. In many markets Top40 was actually Top 100 plus whatever else thejock felt like playing or doing at the time. Yes,jocks could actually make choices! Thefoundation of Top 40 was based on hits andpersonalities, not necessarily in that order.

Underground FM was still a few yearsaway and even when it did arrive, was essentiallya trial balloon sent up by station owners whocouldn't make a dime playing 200 -year -oldmusic performed by 100 -year -old musicians.Nice tunes, but who could pronounce them? Itwas either Franz Schubert's piano sonata Op.Post., D. 959 or the Fugs.

Meanwhile, Bill Drake, an Americanprogramming pioneer, implemented essentiallya music format that would, in the shortest periodof time, get the most popular records on the airthe most often. This was the first high rotationformat. The personalities at his client stations,by the way, were still doing what they did bestand were jamming in what were the forerunnersof elemental formatics . . . the calls, scriptedliners, jock i.d.'s and the like. Then, when themost creative minds in the business got wind of

All over, programmerswere attempting to buildhit -machines with heavyemphasis on "machine."

what Drake was doing (granted with somespectacular initial results), they did what anumber of creative minds in this business havebeen doing for years ... they tried to copy him.

They tried to bake a Drake -Cake. And theyleft out the yeast. (i.e. the personalities) Andtheir cakes did not rise. And, with the exceptionof outfits who can dedicate massive promofunds, they haven't been able to get past cumesfor 25 years. Lousy quarter hours. Lousy hourstuned. Pancakes. No maple syrup. Flat, emptyand tasteless ... filling for a while (maybe threedecent books) but the body (audience) wasstarving. Yet, performers persisted in doingsome exciting things on theradio and there wereopportunities as the stations still continued tobreak after every tune. However, by the lateseventies, programmers had discovered no -talksweeps and the bell tolled . . . again.

I think it's important to remind the readerthat these formatics were implemented for theexpress purpose of generating some ballotreturns and thus some saleable cumes from atarget audience of 12-25 with heavy weighting12-18. All over, programmers were attemptingto build hit -machines with heavy emphasis on"machine". They Just Cranked. FormaticPyrotechnics. And Gawd help anyone who didn'tgrease the machine ... or sound like one. P.D.'sapproached their stations like products ratherthan services. And that, friends, was the firsttime the bell tolled. But the control room monitor

was up S000 loud, we failed to hear the ringing. This was, in hindsight, still alot of fun. Man, wewere rockin'.

Still, the programmers continued to weedout the humanity and spontaneity in favour ofmore highly -valued pure content elements. Iwould know. Twenty years ago I was one ofthose programmers. I too, began to experienceanything my guys said that was outside of theformat as; inappropriate. That understandingwas consistent with the industry standard, myboss and official research. Survey says... "Shutyour hole and play the hits." What a bind! As aperformer, I wanted to "talk dirty and play thehits." as a P.D. I had to shut me up. What to do?Intuitively, I knew. I got out of the P.D. businessand stayed with show business. I carried thoseconflicting positions around with me for anotherten years until I found what I believe is a vastmiddle ground; a middle ground where thetalent can perform; a middle ground where astation's need to hold a significant share ofaudience can be enhanced, while satisfying aP.D. 's requirement for some formatic integrity. This middle ground lies in the realm ofcommunication. (Hey, for a communicationsbusiness, there sure ain't alot of communicatin 'goin' on'. I heard that some place.)

Now, here's the rub. Offered with theunderstanding and respect of a colleague whohas had the experience, I put it to any jock, writer or programmer that; it is your individualresponsibility to find and learn more effectiveways of communicating to your audience. Doyoureally want to be an effective communicator?

Then, stop your bitching and go learn something.Challenge the very basics of how you do whatyou do . .. not in the context of acceptability intheindustry, but what may be acceptable to youraudience. Go ahead, experience your ownresponses. It ain't fatal.

Consider; we have been programming ourradio stations with the same communicationmodel and formatics that were originallyintroduced to influence children. And I rush topoint out, they only worked for a little while.

Show me a radio station thatplays the most music, has the

least talk, plays less commercialsand I'll show you a radio station

going into the tank.

Today, any station that programs exclusivelywith these elements, if it hasn't already, runs therisk of being blown up at any time. It's happened,it's happening.

Meanwhile, owners and managers continueto look for the hold in the market that will givetheir station the "edge". And they continue tolook through glasses labelled "music". Too bad.I could come into any market on my turnip truckto any station in town and within 25 minutes beup against any station I choose. There goes their"hole". There goes their "format". There goestheir "edge". There goes their "market share".And, since so many stations have fallen into thetar pit called "The Most Music", there goes themarket share that radio in general enjoyed

compared to other advertising media. Show mea radio station that plays the most music, has theleast talk, plays less commercials and I'll showyou a radio station going into the tank.

I have never been involved with asuccessful radio station that didn't play the leastmusic, have the most commercials and the mosttalk, ever. Yet, we live and die by the music. Themost music. The best rock. The perfect mix.Blah, blah, blah. Besides, how many times doesStairway To Heaven need to be auditorium -tested to figure out it's probably okay to play thething. As I've said before: Blessed Be TheResearch.

There are thousands of people outside ofthis business who are working oncommunicationright now, not as a corollary to or a part of puretechnology, but as a human psychology. Thestudy of communicating may be a granddevelopment in learning to appreciate thepotential for people to reach and affect responsesfrom other people. For us in the communications'business, there may be opportunities to gobeyond innocuous repetitive babble, attemptsat direct suggestions and authoritariancommands. I can listen to any radio station andimmediately identify all of those elements, andit ain't pretty.

Now, with apologies to Bill Drake, who, within the context of what he was doing, had agreat thing going, I am suggesting that maybeit's time for us in this industry to grow up andstart taking responsibility for our own behavioursand the results they generate. That's right. Growup. The audience did. Oppenheimer may havebuilt the bomb, but at least he said he was sorry.

(Ronald Robinson began his career inbroadcasting in 1964. Since that time he hascovered every aspect of the business, as a jock, newsie, writer, producer, sales andprogramming in small, medium and majormarkets across Canada. He has voiced nationalcommercials and has his own commercialproduct in 35 American states, Australia, NewZealand and across Canada. His experience isdiverse enough to allow legitimate comment onany facet of this industry. ED)

RAY CHARLESThe Birth of SoulThe Complete Atlantic Rhythm &Blues Recordings 1952-1959Atlantic - 7-83210-2-P

Frank Sinatra once stated that there isonly one genius in this business andthat's Ray Charles. And after listeningto the superb collection thatAtlantic hascompiled, one would have to agree withthe Chairman of the Board. Pure gen-ius dripping from every track. Excellentliner notes written by the noted R&Bwriter Robert Palmer provide a biogra-phy of Charles and his seven years atAtlantic, plus the dates and musiciansof every recording make it a classicpackage. Who can resist What'd I Say,I Got A Woman, Talkin' About You, TheRight Time, Yes Indeed and any ofthese other classics? If you know some-one who loves soul, then this collectionwill make an excellent Christmaspresent. (CD reviewed) - DP

NEIL YOUNG & - RockCRAZY HORSEWeldReprise - CD -26671-P

One wonders why Young didn't call thistwo disc set Redundant instead of Weld.Redundant because Young and CrazyHorse did at least half of Weld's songsin asimilar fashion on 1979's Rust NeverSleeps double album. Still, these aregreat songs: Cortez The Killer,Powderfinger, Hey Hey, My My,Cinammon Girl, etc. It's the new tracks

that are the most fun, an eerie version ofDylan's Blowin' In The Wind, completewith war carnage background noise, anall-out rocking Plitin' Up and Rockin' InThe Free World was made for apounding live version like this one. Madeloud to play loud! (CD reviewed) - DP

If you do like Elton John, this is areal treat. 16 of the biggest names in thebusiness doing their own renditions ofElton John's biggest hits. There aresome true gems here. The tough part ispicking out favourites. Oleta Adamsdoes a powerful version of Don't LetThe Sun Go Down On Me, Kate Bushputs her own clever touches to RocketMan, Bruce Hornsby puts his keyboardtalent to full use on Madman AcrossThe Water, Eric Clapton does a greatversion of Border Song and the list goeson and on and on. A must for anycollection, or a great way to start one. Ihope someone puts this one under myChristmas tree. (CD reviewed) - TE

STRAIGHT CLEAN& SIMPLEiron LadySaddlestone - SOM CD -105

One of the more aggressive countrybands out of the West, Straight Clean &Simple have even made an Impact inEurope. Produced by one of the topcountry producers in the business, RoyWarhurst, this package reveals the nittygritty of the band. Although they areseasoned veterans, but fairly new onthe recording scene, they display avocal and instrumental confidence thatshould bring them into the main arena.Old Pine Tree has been taken as thefirst single from this set, an excellentchoice. Also key are the title track,Misty Blue and Life After Thirty. All thematerial was written by band memberLarry Lee Vannatta. The band recentlysigned with Koch Records, a majorEuropean distributor. They have justcome off a major European tour.

THE JOHNER - CountryBROTHERSSome Kind Of MagicHighway Star- JB 1 CD

One of the best kept secrets of theWest, The Johner Brothers should maketheir presence known. They havealready made a good impression withtheir debut release, Goodbye ForGood, which had aten week run up the nationalchart, not bad for a new recording act. Here, we get a whole new perspectiveon the brother duo from Midale,Saskatchewan. They won this year'sCCMA Award as Duo of the Year, andhave followed this win up with the releaseof a new single, Right On Time, which isnow scoring impressive playlist adds.Brothers Brad and Ken have a uniqueharmony approach that makes for acomfortable vocal delivery oozing withfreshness and that youthful Ingredientso hard to attain In country music. Thereis no pretentiousness here, just solidhonky tonk, rockabilly, and pure country. Also watch for crossover action, particularly on If It Was You and theBrad Johner and Rob Hewes penningof Stranded In Love. Besides Brad (leadvocals, acoustic guitars), who writesmost of the material, and Ken (guitar, pedal steel, dobro, 5 -string banjo, gut -string guitar), the band comprises DaleLuedtke (bass), Phil "Buckwheat"Nelson (drums), and Bart McKay (piano, organ, synth, accordion). Should bechart bound soon. (CD reviewed) - WG

JAMES TAYLOR - PopNew Moon ShineColumbia - CK-46038-H

Taylor's already making a bid for thecharts with Copperline, the first singletaken from this set, unusually quick fora Taylor release. The vocal compas-sion is still as upfront as in the past, butthis is Taylor with a difference. Vocalstrength, he's always had, but here wehave a bit more of an edge, still with thattenderness however, which makes each

track particularly appealing. Also keyare (I've Got To) Stop Thinkin"BoutThat, The Water Is Wide, and don'toverlook Slap Leather. Produced byDanny Kortchmar and Don Grolnick.(CD reviewed) - WG

B.B. KING - BluesThere Is Always One More TimeMCA - MCAD-10295-J

B.B. King says that Time is the bestalbum he has recorded in his career. While that's going too far, it is a nice, pleasant, easy listen. King has beenmoving into an A/C format for severalyears now and on Time he doesn't playdown and dirty blues as much as A/Cformat songs with a blues tinge. Thealbum is dedicated to the ImmortalDoc Pom us, who wrote the title

track, which King sings with somereal feeling to close the album nicely.(CD reviewed) DP

TINA TURNERSimply The BestCapitol - C2 -97152-F

Critics often tend to disparage greatesthits packages... but this reviewer couldlisten to Jeff Beck play that impeccablesolo on Private Dancer a million timesand not get sick of it. And the rest of allTurner's renaissance hits are here likeThe Best, Better Be Good To Me, What'sLove Got To Do With It, Let's StayTogether, etc., plus some old chestnutsthrown In, like River Deep - MountainHigh. The album's only real weak trackis a terribly inferior remade version ofNutbush City Limits, where the originalrocking version would have sufficed.Three new bonus tracks Include, I WantYou Near Me, Way Of The World andLove Thing, the latter being a goodrocking single. STEVE WARINER - CountryI Am ReadyArista - 18691-2-J

The title track tells it all. Wariner isready. A new label and a new albumthat should bring him back into chartprominence once again. Wariner hasthat vocal charm that drags the listenerinto his lyrical world. Warmth of deliveryhas been beautifully mastered by thisweathered performer. He has amessage and he tells it well. Key areLeave Him Out Of This, the first singlefrom this set which should kick in onceprogrammers know he has changedlabels, A Woman Loves, and Gone OutOf My Mind. Could be a big one forWariner.
