Children’s Ministry is glad to be back to our regular schedule. All normal weekly activities are back in full swing. We have a Saint Valentine’s Day Party scheduled for our Wednesday night program on February 8th. What a great opportunity it will be to share the love of God with all of our children and to teach them the Christian history of this day. We are still in need of volunteers to help during the late service hour. Can you assist Rose with our 2yr old class or Jane in the nursery? Or, would you like to help teach our 3rd/4th grade Sunday school class in March? Please let me know by calling the church office or contacting me direct at 479-903-5259. Thanks for all you do for Goddard’s Kids. Blessings,

Kim Friery

JANUARYPERFECT ATTENDANCE

Community Rescue Mission Our Mission continues to provide for an increasing need for the homeless population in our area. Here are some statistics for service in January:

6,022 total meals served 67 people were helped with a total of 1,347 nights of stay

provided 8 people found employment (this is very hard in our current

economy) Brian Hilts, our director, reported that there were over 20 children staying at the Mission with family during Christmas. All of them were provided with a wonderful show of mercy and Christ’s love and they all received presents. Thanking you in advance for your blessings through your prayer, donations and support. For this month, I thought it would be helpful to update the congregation on our budget and financial activities for the coming year. We continue to receive 2012 pledge cards from members. When I last updated you in December following our Stewardship Campaign, we had received 110 pledges totaling $553,380. As of today, we have received 154 pledge cards for a total of $639,530. This represents a 29% increase in the amount pledged over last year, and more importantly an increase of 54 more members pledging. We are most grateful for everyone’s com-mitment to Goddard’s financial needs. We do not build our operating budget based upon the amount pledged. Some of our members are regular giv-ers, but choose not to pledge. Others give above and beyond their pledge. Last year, our operating budget needs were $774,542. With God’s grace and guidance, we met all of our 2011 financial commitments. At this time, work continues on preparing our 2012 operating budget. We hope to complete it soon and pre-sent it to our Church Council later in February. The 2012 operating budget will include additional funding for many of the recommendations from Caleb’s Crew. These were summarized in the October 2011 Report to the congregation, and adopted unanimously by the Church Council in November. Among these recommendations are additions to our church staff, and the launch of new ministries and programs to serve members and our greater community. Altogether, Goddard’s 2012 operating budget will approach $1 million. By any measure, this is a significant need and increase from the past. The Endowment Committee has pledged to fund this increase using monies from the Strategic Ministries Fund. These monies, which resulted from a gift in 2010 from the estate of a for-mer member, total approximately $1.025 million today. The Report of Caleb’s Crew also addressed improvements and additions to our buildings and grounds. The recommendation was to fund these needs with a separate building fund/capital campaign. A few projects have already started. These include the purchase of a new church van and renovations to Young Hall to accommo-date the Abbey Service. The Trustees and Church Council voted to add waterproofing for the Sanctuary base-ment to the list of improvements. Because of the urgent need for these, the Endowment Committee has agreed to advance the monies for these projects from the same Strategic Ministries Fund. These monies will be re-plenished once the capital campaign begins. Going forward, a Building Committee has been organized to oversee these matters. I hope this information helps you better understand Goddard’s financial situation. I am grateful to all of you for your giving and support of Goddard. Thank you.

“In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed.” Mark 1:35

It is so easy to become frustrated in our prayer lives. Our best intentions are to pray daily, and specifically for those in need. We may sometimes even say to someone, “I’ll be praying for you”, only to realize a day or so later we have yet to keep this promise. This happens because, even though we’re sincere in our promise, something comes along that distracts us. Most of the time it’s something we’re convinced needs our immedi-ate attention, and so our promise is forgotten.

Jesus was surrounded, as well, by the distractions of the urgent. Mark’s gospel tells us that his “fame spread throughout the surrounding region”, that is, the fame of his healing demon possessed and the sick. It’s a recur-ring theme in Jesus ministry: He heals the sick, he is surrounded by those in need, and he goes to a deserted place to pray. It isn’t complicated. The secret to Jesus ministry is his prayer life, and the secret to his prayer life was in part having a place to pray.

Do you have a place of prayer. I know it’s hard to “go to a deserted place” because it’s hard to find a deserted place. But maybe we don’t have to go as far as we think. We can find a room that is away from the TV and the computer and we can identify this as our place to be with God. Knowing we have a place to be alone with God may just make the difference in being with God.

Steve
