From the Desk of the Editors Dear Readers Charotar University of Science and Technology (CHARUSAT) has been established by

promulgation of Gujarat Private University Act, 2009. It is empowered to confer degrees under Section

22 of UGC Act, 1956.

Presently, CHARUSAT offers 64 programs from UG to Ph D under the tutelage of 8 Institutes and 6

Faculties. They are in the allied disciplines of Technology & Engineering, Pharmacy, Computer

Applications, Management, Applied Sciences, Nursing, Physiotherapy, and other Paramedical Sciences.

All education programs are semester based and are delivered in English Medium. Credit and Grading

Systems are followed for Teaching, Learning and Evaluation. Curriculum and Pedagogy at CHARUSAT

correspond with societal needs. CHARUSAT strives to prepare students for global assignments. It

aims to make its students Job Creators and not Job Seekers.

The Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel believed, “Education without character is futile”.

CHARUSAT proudly follows the spirit. It also follows founding High Moral Values like Honesty,

Integrity, Transparency, Fairness, Equity, and Accountability.Efforts are also made for education

amelioration in rural schools through a Rural Education Development Program. There also exists

a Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) to hone competencies of Faculty and Staff.

With a thrust on socially relevant Research and Development, CHARUSAT strives to transform the

society through creation, augmentation, dissemination and perpetuation of knowledge. For the

purpose, it has always remained engulfed in the events and activities leading to Research and

Development.

During the period, Charotar University of Science and Technology, CHARUSAT, Changa celebrated its

3rd Convocation on 11th January, 2014. The occasion was graced by Mr. Pankaj Patel Chairman and

Managing Director of Zydus Cadilla Healthcare LTD. On the 3rd Convocation of CHARUSAT, total 27

students with academic excellence were awarded Gold Medals and 1288 students from 6 faculties

including students of M. Phil and Ph. D were awarded with the degrees. The convocation address was

followed by the felicitation of Shri Pankaj Patel with the Memento by the President. At the momentous

occasion of 100th MANAS (Management Seminar Series) and CONVEGNO-2014 – A Mega Management

Meet, Mumbai Dabbawalas were invited as chief guest at Indukaka Ipcowala Institute of

Management (I2IM). More than 1030 students of management from various B-Schools across the

nation participated in this gala management meet organized during 24-25 February 2014. “Mumbai

Dabbawalas” - Mr. Raghunath Medge, President of Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Charity Trust

(NMTBSA) along with Mr. Anantha Talekar, Secretary, NMTBSA delivered a seminar on “World Class

Supply Chain Management without a Piece of Paper”.

Present issue of the COMET presents these events and happenings in detail along with the News and

Events of the Institutes, Centres and Cells.

We hope the issue proves to be contently and gives you an interesting and insightful reading.

The Campus

3rd CHARUSAT Convocation held on 11th January 2014

Charotar University of Science and Technology, CHARUSAT, Changa celebrated its 3rd

Convocation on 11th January, 2014. The occasion was graced by Mr. Pankaj Patel Chairman

and Managing Director of Zydus Cadilla Healthcare LTD.

Mr. Pankaj Patel, addressed that excellence is all about readiness to be challenged and

tested as never before. He also emphasized that the vision and intensity for the

achievement determines the place one wants to accomplish. He motivated the awardees to

understand the sense of duty and responsibility of a professional for the society. “A

professional should be enriched by the knowledge and humbled by the thought for a better

civilization.” said the CMD of the Fifth Largest Pharmaceutical Company of India-Zydus

Cadilla Healthcare Ltd.

“The higher you aim, the better you rise. Aim for the excellence and find your niche and

excellence is not a skills it is an attitude. To attain the path of success energize your dreams

with actions” said Shri Pankaj Patel in Convocation Address. He also said that the function

of the university is not simply to teach one to be a bread winner, or to furnish teachers for

the public schools; the supreme function of the university is to teach one to be the organ

that fine adjustment between life and growing knowledge of life, an adjustment which

forms the secret of civilization. He congratulated the graduating students for their

academic excellence and the faculty members for shaping the young minds.

CHARUSAT is established under Gujarat State Act No. 8 of 2009. It has emerged as one of

the leading Universities of Gujarat offering more than 51 programs ranging from UG, PG to

Ph D in Engineering and Technology, Pharmacy, Computer Applications, Management,

Applied Sciences, Nursing and Physiotherapy. More than 5500 students are taking

education at CHARUSAT. CHARUSAT aspires to be a World Class University. It aspires

initially to be in the league of Top 20 Universities at the National Level. Aiming to be a

research oriented university, CHARUSAT has established Research and Development

Center. Uniquely, CHARUSAT also has established Space Technology Center to initiate and

foster research in Space Technology. It also has on-hand research and consultancy projects

of 938 Lacs from funding agencies like DST/DBT, GUJCOST, UGC, DAE, SERI, CSIR, ABB,

DNP Industry, GSBTM and many more in addition to Projects worth 844 Lacs under

consideration. He said that CHARUSAT holds the mission to empower through knowledge

and enable the young generation to ignite their intellect. The function was presided over by

Shri Surendrabhai Patel, President, CHARUSAT. In his presidential remarks he

congratulated the awardees and said that this Convocation will be marked as an important

milestone in the history of CHARUSAT because the first Ph D scholar is graduating from

CHARUSAT. He inspired the students to accomplish any task of their path through intellect,

humility and character and to be upgraded, doer and consequently an achiever. “The goal of

education is to teach one to think. Intelligence with character is the true goal of education”

further he added. On the 3rd Convocation of CHARUSAT, total 27 students with academic

65th Republic Day Celebrations @ CHARUSAT

65th Republic Day was celebrated at CHARUSAT on January, 26 2014. On the occasion, Dr. B

G Patel, Provost, CHARUSAT hoisted the Indian national flag. The occasion was graced by

the Executives of Kelavani Mandal and CHARUSAT Campus, Deans, Principals, Faculty and

Staff Members of CHARUSAT. Dr. B G Patel delivered an opportune speech on the occasion.

Students of CHARUSAT and schools of Changa and Demol presented nationalistic Songs and

dance performances.

IQAC Cell, CHARUSAT organized an "AWARENESS WORKSHOP ON NAAC ACCREDITATION: A

STEP TOWARDS QUALITY ENHANCEMENT"

IQAC Cell, CHARUSAT had organized an "AWARENESS WORKSHOP ON NAAC

ACCREDITATION: A STEP TOWARDS QUALITY ENHANCEMENT" on Saturday, 4th January

2014. This workshop was planned for all the Institutional IQAC members, Professors,

Associate Professors and Assistant Professors (with more than 5 years of experience).

Around 80 faculty members participated in the workshop. Dr. B G Patel, Provost

Power launch

Divya Bhaskar launched a coffee table book ‘Power 100’. The ‘Power 100’ was released by

Dr. Kamla Beniwal, the Honorable Governor of Gujarat on February 19, 2014 at Hotel Shiva,

S. G. Road, Ahmedabad. The book highlights the achievements of 100 most powerful people

in their respective fields from the state.

The Power 100

The Power 100 is a profiling and documentation of the success stories of 100 Gujaratis who

are the true GROWTH ENGINES of the state. These Gujaratis are the noted citizens who

have contributed actively in the fields of art-culture, social and economic development and

sports. They have played an active role in moulding the state’s past, the present and the

future. I am sure you will agree that the entire credit for Gujarat’s all-inclusive growth goes

to its social workers, artists and businessmen.

Creation of ‘The Power 100’

They have created this list of noted Guajarati who have contributed in varied sectors

ranging from arts-literature, sports and social work to business. To create this wide list,

Bhaskar Group carried out their own research as well as took suggestions from learned

readers. To further ensure neutrality of the final list, they set up a jury of esteemed citizens

with experience and deep knowledge. The jury members have then shortlisted

comprehensive list to a list of perfect 100 Guajarati’s. Giving his reflections on the occasion,

Dr. M C Patel said that not only I but the entire Matrusanstha, Kelavani Mandal, CHARUSAT

and CHRF Family, All the Executives, Staff and Employees of all the four organizations

deserve this honor. The effort of Social Upliftment through Education and Healthcare is

Sahiyari Samayatra turned into a Sahiyari Shikshan Ane Swasthya Yatra wherein the

Donors have also played an important role.

SPOURAL 2014 @ CHARUSAT

Charotar University of Science and Technology, CHARUSAT, Changa has organized

SPOURAL 2014 by student. It is on 19 to 21 February, 2014. At the inaugurations of

SPOURAL 14 Dr. M C Patel, Provost, Ashokbhai Patel, Dr A M Sheikh, principal and dean of

institute will be present in the Deep Jyoti function of SPOURAL 14. Students as well as

faculty member are present in this event. In SPOURAL 14 on stage and off stage event, on

stage event like Dance, Fashion Shows, Skit etc and off stage event like Rangoli, Debate,

Recycle bin etc. 2500 to 3000 student are participated in this event.

2014. In this event number of participations

the departments. Aims of the Event were, to

strengthen the bond with our alumnus; to get help from alumnus for development of

college in terms of placement and training of presently graduating students; to create a

strong alumni database and to create trust and belief so that whenever alumni face

problems they should resort to their alma mater for help.

During advertisement phase of the event a link was created wherein alumnus needed to

register if they wished to attend the event so that necessary arrangements could be made

for the event. There were 245 registrations from all the departments. Registration Desk

was kept to keep a track of the attendees and get their details, so that in future we can

contact them. After registration the alumni’s were asked to gather in the auditorium where

the Principal of CSPIT was to address the group, to explain the very existence and aim of

CAA (CSPIT Alumni Association).

An Expert Lecture on “Soft Skill and Industry Expectations”@ CHARUSAT

Chandubhai S Patel Institute of Science and Technology

was organized an Expert lecture on “Soft Skills and

Industry Expectations “was jointly organized by

Microsoft IT Academy, U & P U Patel Department of

Computer Engineering, CHARUSAT, IQAC (Internal

Quality Assurance Cell), CHARUSAT, and Training &

Placement Cell, CHARUSAT. It was conducted on 13th

February 2014. The Chief Guest was Mr. Michael Scholl, President and CEO of “My Foot in

the Door” (MFITD), USA, Mr. Bosko Lazic, Vice President, Sales and Principal Relationships

“My Foot in the Door” (MFITD), USA and Mr. Kartik R Shah CEO and Managing Director –

Bitscape InfoTech, Ahmadabad.

The program started by a welcome speech of Prof. Ashwin Makwana, Asst. Professor and

T&P Cell Representative, MS IT Academy Coordinator, who briefly introduced the

organizing partners like Microsoft India, Microsoft Ed-vantage, “My Foot in The Door” and

BitScape Infotech. Dr. Anuradha Gajjar, Professor & Coordinator of IQAC introduced the

guests.

Mr. Michael Scholl, stressed on the importance Soft Skills and attributes for securing a

satisfying job. These attributes and soft skills like Strong Work Ethics, Good

Communication Skills, Positive Attitude and Critical Thinking would help the students

stand apart from the growing number of job seekers. He emphasized on “My Foot in the

Door” portal for job seekers and how it would be beneficial to job seekers.

Mr. Kartik Shah, explained various products and services offered by Microsoft as Microsoft

Partner by BitScape InfoTech for the purpose of education and placements. He also

explained how Microsoft IT Academy and Microsoft Certification help fresher students to

got job in industry in India and Abroad. Students of pre-final year B.Tech, MTech,MCA and

final year students of Pharmacy, Nursing and Applied Science, MBA were present. At the

end of Lecture Dr. Anuradaha express vote of thanks.

Computer Technocrats’ Symposium,

various technical and gaming events

were organized like ‘C’ Storm, Code ‘J’am, Top Coder, Prastuti - Poster Presentation, IT Quiz,

Data Master, Web Designing, CS Roadies, Age of Empires and Tunnel of Speed. 851

participants from 60 different under graduate and post graduate colleges of Gujarat

participated in this event. With the celebration of technical event “IGNITE 2014”, 12th

Two Days National Pharma Carnival @ CHARUSAT

Ramanbhai Patel College of Pharmacy (RPCP), a constituent institute of Charotar

University of Science and Technology (CHARUSAT), Changa, had organized a two days

National Pharma Carnival “AVALANCHE ’14 – The Fury of Thoughts” on 7th and 8th

February, 2014. AVALANCHE is National level Pharma Carnival of RPCP initiated in the

year 2007 by RPCP barnstormers and it was first of its kind in Gujarat organizes once in

two years. “AVALANCHE ’14 – The Fury of Thoughts” is a fourth edition of the brand event

of RPCP. This year RPCP is celebrating 10 years of its service in Pharma education under

the tag line of “10 glorious years” and this event is the part of that celebrations.

Mr. Ketan Patel, the Chief Guest of the inaugural function, in his speech, emphasized on

Creativity and Knowledge. “Everything creates twice in the world- first in mind and then in

reality” said Mr. Patel. He created an acronym of the word KNOW as K- Knowledge; N-

Nobility; O- Observational skills; W- Workmanship. “Application of knowledge is more

important than its possession; acquire and apply knowledge” narrated Mr. Patel. He

interacted with the students at the end of the inaugural function and thrown light on the

present pharma scenario at the national level and also answered questions of the students

diligently. He told that India is known for the pharma industry in the world and can be

number one if the innovation is in the center. He also stressed upon the proactiveness and

its importance in the success of any person.

Dr. B.G.Patel spoke about the importance of Research and Development as well as Patents

at the academic level. “None of the Indian University is able to compete with the world

standards as we have created educational Universities not the research based” narrated Dr.

B.G. Patel.

Dr. M.C. Patel gave information about the CHARUSAT University, CHARUSAT Hospital and

newly launched CHARUSAT Space Research Center.

RAPCOPINC 2014 - An International Conference on

“Current Perspectives in Drug Discovery, Development and Therapy” @ CHARUSAT

Ramanbhai Patel College of Pharmacy International Conference (RAPCOPINC 2014), a Two

Day International Conference was inaugurated at Ramanbhai Patel College of Pharmacy

(RPCP), CHARUSAT on 27th February, 2014. The theme of the conference is “Current

Perspectives in Drug Discovery, Development and Therapy”. It was being organized as a

part of the 10thyear celebration of RPCP.

The Chief Guest for the inaugural function was Dr. Urmish Chudgar, Managing Director,

Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Dr. Chudgar enlightened the delegates with various scopes of

gene therapy related to cancer and described success of several anticancer drugs including

Imetinib. He said that he is very pleased for his second visit to CHARUSAT after about seven

The function was started with invocation to the Almighty followed by offering flowers to

the Goddess Saraswati –the presiding deity of Knowledge, by the invited guests. At the

onset, Dr. R H Parikh, Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy and Principal, Ramanbhai Patel College of

Pharmacy felicitated the invited guests and gave introduction to institute. Dr. B G Patel,

Provost, CHARUSAT gave a glimpse of the journey and achievements of CHARUSAT.

Shedding light on the journey of CHARUSAT, He added that CHARUSAT has emerged as one

of the leading Universities of Gujarat offering more than 51 programs ranging from UG, PG

to Ph D in Engineering and Technology, Pharmacy, Computer Applications, Management,

Applied Sciences, Nursing and Physiotherapy.

Dr. Anuradha Gajjar, Conference Secretary thrown light on proceedings of RAPCOPINC

2014. She said Conference have seven Tracks namely; Drug Design & Discovery,

Experimental Pharmacology (Medicine),Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Drug

Delivery, Clinical Pharmacy & Pharmacy Practice, Quality Management, Regulatory Affairs

Dr. M. C. Patel in his ceremonial address declared that as India is emerging as HR Capital

today, the youth should contribute its best to the national by working very hard so as to

become efficient managers.

Dr. Manoj Desai, Vice president, Medicinal Chemistry, Gilead Sciences Inc, USA delivered

Key Note address on “Discovery and Development of New Treatments for HIV and HCV”. He

shared success stories of two novel antiviral agents Cobisistat and Ledipasvir used for

treatment of HIV and HCV. The Key Note Session was chaired by Dr. B G Patel. The eminent

speakers from across the world including Dr. Alan Mark, Professor, University of

Queensland, Dr. Evans Coutinho, Professor, Bombay College of Pharmacy, Dr. Saranjit

Singh, Professor, NIPER, Mohali and other from well-known institutions and industries will

come and deliver talks on various subjects related to new drugs for treatment of heart

disease and AIDS, drug discovery, nanotechnology etc during the two days of the

conference.

The function was presided over by Shri Surendrabhai Patel, President, CHARUSAT. In his

presidential remarks he said that in coming years there will be total change in the field of

healthcare. Research and innovations plays an important role for, to cope up with massive

changes. CHARUSAT is an R & D driven university. The idea of the conference emerged to

At the momentous occasion of 100th MANAS (Management Seminar Series) and

CONVEGNO-2014 – A Mega Management Meet, Mumbai Dabbawalas were invited as chief

As a prelude to Convegno 2014, an Essay Competition 2014 was organized on February 22,

2014, in which 430 students pursuing their respective UG and PG courses participated. The

first, second and third rankers of the Essay Competition will be awarded with Rs. 5000,

2000 and 1000 respectively.

Dr. M. C. Patel in his ceremonial address declared that as India is emerging as HR Capital

participants and made the youth aware about its responsibility of making India Super

Power. Mr. Raghunath Medge, President, Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Charity Trust

(NMTBSA) and chief guest of the function delivered a session on “World Class Supply Chain

Management without a Piece of Paper”. He informed that NMTBSA works on the principle

of “Service to Man is service to God”. A group of people started this service of delivering

tiffin boxes in 1890 and later were registered as NMTBSA in 1956.

Today more than 5000 dabbawalas deliver 2, 00,000 Tiffin Boxes (i.e. 4, 00,000

transactions every day) by travelling a distance of 60 to 70 kms by walk, or by a bicycle or a

train with an error ratio of 1 in 16 million transactions and thus achieve Six Sigma rating in

their performance. Mr. Raghunath Medge, sir enlightened the audience by explaining the

functions of Mumbai Dabbawalas. How the delivery system of Dabbawalas works, how do

they collects hot food in lunch boxes from the residences of workers and deliver the lunch

to the workplace utilizing various modes of transport, predominantly bicycles and the

trains, and returns the empty boxes back to the customer's residence that very afternoon.

He shared his view on Supply Chain management, Coding system, Six Sigma Concepts,

Macro and Micro management etc.

Talk on MARS ORBITAL MISSION – ISRO @ P D Patel Institute of Applied Sciences

Department of Physical Science of P D Patel Institute of Applied Sciences (PDPIAS) and

Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) had jointly organized a talk on “MARS

ORBITAL MISSION-ISRO” as part of National Science Day celebrations. It was organized on

28th February, 2014. The talk was delivered by Mrs. Moumita Datta & Mr. S. S. Sarkar, SAC,

Ahmedabad. Which was followed by the poster presentation on “The Excitement and

Current Research Scenario in Physics (ECRSP-2014)” by post graduate students. The

program details are attached herewith. It was attended by faculty members, research

scientists, research Scholars and students of CHARUSAT.

Science Academies’ 57th Refresher Course in Experimental Physics

A two-week Science Academics 57th refresher course in experimental physics organised by

the department of physics, P.D Patel Institute of Applied Sciences, CHARUSAT, Changa for

science/engineering colleges and university teachers and few M.Sc physics students began

in association with Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, Indian National Science

Academy, New Delhi and the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad on Tuesday, 18th

March 2014 to April 2, 2014.

The programme started with the floral welcoming of the dignitaries. PDPIAS principal

Dr.R.V.Upadhyay delivered the welcome address and introduced the guests. He pointed out

that there are aspects of knowledge: effort, experimentation and encouragement.

The Course Director was Professor R Srinivisan, former HOD, Dean and deputy director,

IIT-Madras. He spoke about the Genesis of Science Academics refresher courses in

experimental Physics and the Academies involvement in conducting programs to improve

science education in the country. With the declining interest of the students in basic

sciences, there is need for a thrust on innovative style in experimental physics in the course

curriculum of the universities to make it

more understandable and enjoyable. The

theoretical approach should be flavored

with the experimental techniques.

the Schedule of 57th Refresher Course in

Experimental Physics and called upon the

participants to make the best use of the training program.

involved in the participation of refresher course and the role of refresher courses in the

The course will give the participants an opportunity to have experience around 25

experiments at B. Sc/M. Sc level with a kit developed for Indian Academy of Sciences,

Bangalore under the guidance of R Srinivisan. This kit is useful for verifying the laws and

principles of physics with reasonable accuracy in a very simple manner. The event is

scheduled to go on till April 02.

The course is designed to give the participants hands-on training and discussion of the

theory on selected experiments in the areas of thermal physics, mechanics, optics,

electricity and magnetism, semi-conductor physics and electronics.

physiotherapy. Mr. Devang Joshi, Registrar CHARUSAT has introduced all the guests for the

function. Dr. M. C. Patel expressed his warmth towards Ashok & Rita Patel, the esteemed

donor from Changa for their magnanimous donation of Rs. 5 crore towards the

establishment of the state-of-the- art infrastructure of the Physiotherapy Bhavan – one of

its kinds in Gujarat State. The Institute was rechristened as Ashok & Rita Patel Institute of

Physiotherapy by Revolutionary Saint Pujya Swami Shree Sachchidanandji from Dantali. He

gave his blessings to the donor family and CHARUSAT to grow more in future so that

CHARUSAT Rural Education Development Program (CREDP)

CHARUSAT Rural Education Development Program

CHARUSAT Rural Education Development Program is an initiative of CHARUSAT, Changa,

started with the aim to strive for the development of school education in Charotar region

and eventually expand it to the state of Gujarat. The CREDP Cell formed to accomplish the

objectives has undertaken various activities like Students’ and Teachers’ Training

Programs, Parents- counseling, Education awareness programs, School Visits, CHARUSAT

Campus visits by Schools. Here is an overview of the activities taken up by the Cell:

Awareness Program:

Stepping forward to accomplish the

objectives of the program, the CREDP Cell

has initiated A General Awareness Program.

The Awareness Program has been

conducted under the title - “ શિક્ષણ, શિદ્યાર્થી, અંગે્રજીઅનેઅિનારયગુ”in total 25 schools till

now. In total 4353 students of standard 5 to

9 have been trained under the same

program till date. It is expected to cover

almost all the schools that have joined

competence. (D) Importance of English Language: as Global language, for cross-culture

communication, employment and promotion, business transaction, academic purpose, for

higher education and transaction across linguistic boundaries etc. (E) Role of students skill

development, adaptively, innovative, critical and researcher approach, readiness to accept

challenges and (F) Need of the era- multi-talent, competence in communication and use of

technology.

The motivational lecture is followed by a healthy interaction with the students and faculty

members. The interaction provided some essential inputs from faculty and school authority

that will be important in planning the future activities.

Campus visit by Schools: Every month different schools are invited to visit Education

Campus, Changa. The students are guided through every educational institution. The

students are introduced to the facilities provided at Laboratories, workshops, classrooms,

internet labs and Knowledge resource Center (central library) as well as CHARUSAT

Hospital. They are shown a movie about CHARUSAT. Total 505 students of different schools

from rural area have visited CHARUSAT Campus in the month of December and January.

Total 280 students of three different schools have visited the campus in month of February.

Some other schools are expected to visit the campus in coming months.

Campus visit by Senior Citizen Forum, Bakrol:

Senior Citizen Forum, Bakrol visited CHARUSAT Campus on Tuesday, 11th February, 2014.

The visit was coordinated by CREDP Cell. Total 60 members of the Forum visited the

campus. They were led to all educational institutes and provided with details of the

activities on the campus. They watched movie about CHARUSAT and had interesting

interaction. They were happy with the experience at CHARUSAT.
