Sharon Roberts, Barrel Racing Loses a Friend Feb 10, 2011 (Kinder, LA) - Sharon Roberts, known around the barrel racing community for her years of work with equine supple-ments like Ulcer Stop, passed away in her sleep while attending the LG Pro Classic in Kinder, Louisiana today. Preliminary reports from Allen Parish Louisiana offi cials are that Sharon died of con-gestive heart failure. Lance Graves, co-founder of the LG Pro Classic said, “We are all so saddened by this loss. Our entire barrel racing community is heart broke about Sharon’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family. She always supported this event and we are all so very sad today.” Sharon was passionate about rodeo and barrel racing. She is a native of the New Orleans area and had been battling heart disease for some time. Co-producer of the LG Pro Classic Ryan Dohrn said today, “Sharon was always smiling. I can not remember a time when she was not laughing, despite the battles she was waging with her heath. She was a shining example of hope.” All the staff and crew of the LG Pro Classic wish to express to Sharon’s husband Mike and the entire Roberts’s family our deep-est condolences during this time of loss. A moment of silence for Sharon was held in her honor during the running of the fi rst go of the $200,000 event. --Courtesy of www.lgproclassic.com

Tom Balding Introduces the West Texas Style Spur Tom Balding of Sheridan, Wyo., is proud to introduce his new line of West Texas Style spurs. This innovative design, born of 27 years of experience, is built with comfort and functionality in mind. The West Texas Style heelbands, made of brushed 1018 steel, are 2 oz. heavier than Tom’s original heelband, and are available in 1-inch men’s and ladies. Built to withstand years of use without comprise to fi t or function. You can feel the differ-ence. Choose from any of Tom’s popular shank and rowel options. Two new shank offerings, the #546 and #102, pair well with these new bands. Unique new rowel options are also available, all of which can be viewed online. Dress them up with your name, brand or logo; the possibilities are unlimited. Every piece is handcrafted in Sheridan, Wyo., made to your specifi cations, with quality guaranteed. “I am really impressed with my new West Texas Style spurs from Tom Balding. The extra weight in the heelband makes them bal-ance well and stay put on my heel. I can feel the difference. I chose the new #546 shank and “U” rowel. It’s a perfect combination,

versatile for any horseman.” Visit www.TomBalding.com to see samples of all of our American-made products. Barrel Racers Break 14-second Mark at San Antonio RodeoBy Susan Kanode for the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo It’s hard to imagine the barrel racing at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo getting any faster, but it did at the 11th performance in the AT&T Center on Saturday night. Through the fi rst 10 performances with 12 members of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association competing in each one, there had only been one run that was under 14 seconds. That hap-pened at the sixth rodeo when Brittany Fleck from Mandan, N.D., stopped the clock in 13.96 seconds. Saturday night, it happened again – twice. The fi rst barrel racer out was the defending champion Lindsay Sears. Sears from Nanton, Alberta, won the championship here in 2010 aboard her great horse Martha. This year, she is riding Mo and they are defi nitely fi nding their groove. Sears and Mo stopped the clock in 13.90 seconds, the fastest run of the rodeo and were atop the leader board. However, it didn’t lastlong. Savanah Reeves from Cross Plains, Texas, had won the secondround in their bracket on Saturday afternoon with a 14.17 and was the next barrel racer to go. Reeves now owns the fastest time at thisyear’s rodeo with a 13.85. She has won $4,148 here and regardless of how she does in the fourth round on Sunday afternoon, she has won enough money to advance to the semi-fi nals. Sears placed fourth in the fi rst round. With her second place fi n-ish on Saturday night, she has a total of $2,075 won here and is also in good position to make it back. Both of them will be hoping to win more money Sunday and advance through the semi-fi nals to the fi nal round.*UPDATE: The fastest time of the rodeo in the barrel race hap-pened on Tuesday night with no surprises. Brittany Pozzi won the fi rst round with a 13.98-second run. She bettered her time in the second round with a 13.89 to tie for second. She and her talented horse Duke have just been getting better in the AT&T Center arena. On Tuesday, they had a time of 13.75 to win the round. If Pozzicontinues, she could easily set a new arena record here. The currentrecord is held by Tiffany Fox with a 13.69 second run that she madehere in 2009.

THE RUNDOWN: CODY BAUSERMANHORSE: CoronafromthegetgoBay Mare, 4 Years Old, 15.1 hands, 1,100 lbs.OWNER: Macy QuintanillaHORSE HISTORY: A race trainer, Justin Haug, that used to work for me called and said he had a horse I needed to buy for a barrel horse. She ran AA on the track and won a race. Justin said she was real light and supple in the face and would make a great barrel horse. I ended up buying her from Tom Batten who actually owns part of King Corona. Justin has a good eye for horses that will make barrel horses. Jimmy & Terri Wiggins bought her after the fi rst go of the LG BFA Futurity and I hope she continues to win for them as well. BIT: O Ring Smooth Snaffl e HEADGEAR: Tiedown or Bonnet depending on how she ridesSADDLE: Mike & Talmadge Green Barrel SaddlePAD: Classic Equine PadLEG GEAR: Bar F splint boots and bell boots GRAIN: 14% PelletSUPPLEMENTS: 1 Tube of Succeed per day HAY: Bermuda Grass HayADDITIONAL HORSE CARE & SHOEING: NoneTRAINING & RIDING STYLE: I would say I am a little more aggressive than most people with my training. With the level of competition out there today in the futurities, a person needs to make sure your horses are used to pressure before they get to the show. If they don’t show they are ready for competi-tion at home they are probably not going to make a horse that can run competitively at the futurities. In my experience, the good horses will handle the pressure and they don’t need to be handled as delicately. I want to go to a futurity and have no fear of asking for that last gear. When I am training a horse for someone, I feel it is my responsibility to make sure they aren’t putting training bills into a horse that isn’t capable of winning. However, once the horse shows they are capable of handling the pressure of competition I just keep them happy and sound and take care of them the best I can.

The winter skies parted and welcomed sunshine warmed up the Cam-Plex for 111 barrel racers last Saturday February 11, 2011 in Gillette Wyoming. The annual Roper Rage barrel racing jackpot produced by Kohr Quarter Horses, held for the past 6 years in conjunction with the Winter Western Pro Rodeo had record high entries! Contestants from CO, SD, ND, MT, ID, NE and of course, WY all competed for Roper Apparel and Footwear Awards plus added prize money. Cam-Plex Grounds crew kept the ground even and a fast track for the wide travelling bunch of barrel racers. A special thanks to Harold with the Gillette Hardees for breakfast and free milkshakes and hamburger coupons. For complete results and pictures, check out www.KohrQuarterHorses.com.

Headin’ For HomeHeadin’ For Home By Mike Morrison By Mike Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries) Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)

Even the best barrel horses need some direction when run-ning the pattern. Without some cues, they could really mess up. But, with some help, they can be winners.

It’s the same thing with us in our lives. God has a good plan for our lives but too often, we don’t listen or wait for His direction. He has given us many Scriptures telling us that He will help us and give us wisdom if we only ask and follow His plans. It’s not hard to follow God’s plan for us because He wants us to succeed even more than we do. God doesn’t make failures but He will pick us up when we fail, dust us off and help us get going again. So surrender to God. Make Jesus the lord of your life. If you give god your best by walking in love and obedience to Him and His Word, you can claim God’s best in your life. God wants every believer to run a good race and fi nish the course in life with joy. We
