MORE WAYS TO RECRUIT

We are still working hard on developing our roster through theuse of looking at every name in our cruise books and thenorganizing the data by division. That effort will take another year. So, in order to keep trying to find shipmates I am asking membersto look at your cruise book(s) (SOON TO BE ON OUR WEBSITE IN ADIGITAL VERSION [THANKS TO GEORGE PASSANTINO] and look atthe names in your Division (or any division in which you hadfriends/acquaintances) and if you have what might be helpfulinformation on anyone send it to us. Helpful information would bethe home town where a person grew up, past address from whichyou may have received a letter/Christmas card/other, phone numberyou may have had for them.

You can send the info to: [email protected] [email protected]

USS TICONDEROGA VETERANS’ “ALL HANDS”PROJECTS

In the October 2017 newsletter we tried to start work on getting Division Rosters establishedas all the data we have from the National Archives in by Name and Rate with no DivisionData. The work listed on page 5 of the newsletter was to lead to a database that wouldhelp us with recruiting efforts. Unfortunately that request for volunteers (there is a lot oftyping to do) did not get any. That led our interim treasurer, George Passantino, to put thefollowing in his article on page 30 of the January 2018 newsletter:To enhance our membership we are outsourcing a Data Entry effort to digitalize some ofour ship records to assist in locating former shipmates. We have reams of shipmate datathat needs to be condensed and digitalized where it can be helpful in finding contactinformation of our many shipmates. To help to offset the cost of this outsourcing, donationsare requested and should be referenced as “Data Entry – Shipmate Locator”. (SEE PAGE22 IN THIS NEWSLETTER)In the USS MIDWAY CURRENTS Spring 2018 edition magazine I saw an article aboutthe MIDWAY Master Crew List. They started developing their list 10 years ago usingvolunteers from the library on the ship. It sounded like these volunteers are all women andthere are 10 or more helping in this effort. So at the New Orleans Reunion asked for womenvolunteers and got three. So I will now advertise for women to help using the newsletter tomake the request.

Naval Serviceman Featured in Upcoming Book About Wisconsin’sMissing in Action Servicemen

Sun, June 3 2018MADISON, WI – “He was a very likable guy. He was brave.” Aviation

Boatswain Handler William Dale Gorsuch is still remembered today, nearly 50years after he went missing during the Vietnam War. Dale was a small-townWisconsin, all-American boy. Following the footsteps of many in his family, inthe midst of the Vietnam War, he enlisted in the Navy. Dale’s story – hischildhood in Wisconsin, his service, and his legacy – is one of 37 stories told inthe upcoming book, Wisconsin’s 37: The Lives of Those Missing in Action in theVietnam War.

Wisconsin’s 37 tells of the lives of the 37 men from Wisconsin classified as“Missing in Action” from the Vietnam War. From the Gulf of Tonkin until theParis Peace Accords, in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, the men of Wisconsinexperienced nearly every aspect of the Vietnam War. Their stories are as uniqueas the men themselves.

More than just a military book, though, Wisconsin’s 37 focuses on how theseindividuals lived rather than just the circumstances that led to theirdisappearances. Growing up in familiar places all around Wisconsin, readers willrelate to their experiences and values, and perhaps appreciate their sacrifices all the more.

Heavily based on nearly 200 interviews from family, friends, and fellow servicemen, Wisconsin’s 37 giveslife to the names on the Wall, and highlights the importance of remembering those we have lost.

Author Erin Miller is a 2018 graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she holds a B.A. inhistory and an M.S. in communication sciences and disorders. It has been her honor to record these stories. JohnSharpless is a history professor at the UW.

The book will be available for purchase in early June through McFarland and Company’s website andAmazon.com. All royalties from the sale of this book will be donated to the Wisconsin Veterans Museum inMadison and the Highground Memorial in Neillsville, Wisconsin.

William Dale Gorsuch was born on March 20, 1948 in Cambria, WI, where he lived until he enlisted inthe United States Navy on October 24 1966. Dale attended basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Station justnorth of Chicago and received further training in aviation handling before being assigned to Cecil Field inJacksonville, Florida, where he would remain for two years.

At NAS Cecil Field Dale served as an aviation boatswain mate, handling (ABH3). ABHs controlled allmovement on the flight line, guiding aircraft into and out of their assigned ramp slots. He was trained to handlefires on deck and to prepare the foam formula used to quench the flames. He was stationed aboard the USSTiconderoga at times during his two years and went to sea aboard it when it made one of its cruises to the Gulfof Tonkin. In October 1968 Dale was named “Sailor of the Month.” Based on the fact he was an ABH3 we think

he was in V-1 Division but have no documentation on that.Any member that knows his division or has any otherinformation on Dale please contact the Newsletter Editor.

Our muster roll shows him onboard July 1969. Shortlythereafter he received orders to USS CONSTELLATION,CVA-64. On the morning of October 2, 1969 within twenty-five miles of the Constellation, the aircraft—a GrummanGreyhound Transport Aircraft (C-2A) —disappeared. Noneof the 20 passengers’ bodies was ever recovered and the causeof the crash remains unknown. His name is inscribed on theCourts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

TREASURERS REPORT The Ticonderoga Veterans Association just completed our 47th

Reunion in New Orleans, Louisiana. We had a great time reconnecting withshipmates, as well as making new friends with shipmates from other periods. Our attendees were from both Ticonderoga ships, The CV-CVA-CVS-14and the CG-47.

Our new association President is David Graf, formally from the CG-47.David had previously served our organization as 2nd VP, 1st VP, ExecutiveVP, and Historian. As you can see, David has been very involved with growing our organization, and instrumental in bringing CG-47 shipmates aboard.

Our process has already started for our next reunion which will be held at Albuquerque, NewMexico from May 16-20, 2019 at the Uptown Sheraton Hotel. So, mark your calendars. Additionalinformation will be forthcoming in quarterly newsletters, and on our Website, BigT.net. Futurereunions sites have been determined with our 2020 Reunion being held in Portland, Oregon, andour 2021 Reunion (Our 50th BigT Reunion) being held in Norfolk, Virginia.

Financially, our organization holds a strong position. We did have some deficit spending thepast two years as we had to purchase 6 laptop Chromebooks, and do intensive scanning, for cruisebook viewing at reunions. During transportation and storage last year between reunions, our cruisebooks were both lost and the rest destroyed in the Florida storms. We had to scan and digitalize allof the Carrier and Cruise books that we could locate to preserve for history. On the positive side,we will save on future shipping costs of these books between future reunions. We also had to paya significant amount for packaging and shipping costs of our Ticonderoga items from the HornetMuseum in Alameda, California. The Museum reduced the space allocated to the Ticonderoga andrequired us to remove almost 2000 LBS of Tico Historical items. These items were then shipped tothe Mississippi Maritime Museum in Pascagoula, Mississippi for future displays honoring both TicoCarrier and Cruiser.

Donation requests are still a large part of our revenue to finance the organization. The last coupleof years we have seen increased expenses while revenue has dropped somewhat. Hopefully, we canfind ways of reducing expenses and increase revenue. Along with donation requests, we are workingtowards increasing membership with both carrier and cruiser veterans, which will aid in increasingrevenue. Ed Trotter is heading up our “Membership” function and one of his projects is to digitalizereams of crew lists that we obtained, to enhance our recruiting outreach. There is a significantexpense with this process and welcomed donations can be earmarked “Data Processing-ShipmateLocator”. Other donation categories remain as, General Fund, Memorial Fund, CG-47 Museum, and Ships Bell.

I hope to see many of you at the Albuquerque Reunion next May. We still are looking for anAssociation Treasurer. If interested, David Graf (860-608-5943) would love to accept your appointment.Sincerely,George Passantino Acting Treasurer 8/17/17

SECRETARY’S LETTERHi Everyone,Well here we are! July 2018! The New Orleans Reunion was fun! Thankyou Steve & Sandy…Good Job! Good Job! The Association is moving onto its 48th year. The Cruiser guys are stepping up. David Graf is our newPresident (the first from CG-47). Bill Spanbauer is our Executive Vice President (also from CG-47)and will be our next President in 2020. Larry Qualter (CVA-14) is currently Second Vice Presidentand will be President in 2021.At the Board and General meetings we discussed many issues. In summary: Our mailing list is over 650 strong with members from several generations who served on theTiconderoga warships from 1944 through 1989, surviving spouses, and associates. We are financially stable, actively promoting our history, and continuously reuniting with shipmatesfor life. Most of our Carrier members have reached the age of 70 and many have opted for LifeMembership. What this means is that we have received a lump-sum, multi-year payment of dues froma large portion of our members. This is great for now and will keep us well funded for a few moreyears. However, we will need to keep acquiring new dues paying members to remain solvent overthe next 10 years or so. In the past our members have donated generously to the various memorialand museum funds. Please consider donating (no matter the amount). The next reunions will be in the following cities (unless something comes up): 2019-Albuquerque,NM; 2020-Portland, OR; 2021-Norfolk, VA. The 2021 reunion will be the Association’s 50th

anniversary.Ed Trotter continues to promote the Data Entry Conversion project. He estimates that it may cost asmuch as $6000 to complete digitizing the rosters. One of the issues is that many of the records arequite old, so, current address and contact data for these shipmates will not be easy to obtain. Theboard has asked Ed to prepare a cost benefit analysis before it will consider such a large expenditureand has allocated $600 for this year. You may donate directly to this project using the dues form.Sean McConnell (Cruiser) was nominated as Second Vice President and chairman of the budgetoversight committee.David Graf (Historian) reported that the Carrier Ship’s Bell project has not gone forward but shouldshow progress this year.Joyce Frank proposed that the Association purchase an inexpensive Microphone PA system to avoidthe large fees charged by hotels to use theirs. Chaplains Corner By: LCDR Brett InmanFellow Shipmates & Friends,

Today, I found a hand-written note from my mother (who passedaway two years ago) from when I was deployed overseas. It remindedme of how times have changed.

Two of my sons have been deployed to the Far East and the MiddleEast in recent years. I am amazed at the degree of change there hasbeen with the ease of communication back home. Even in the FOBs(forward operating base) you can easily talk, send texts and even pictures/video with ease!

Back in my days on the TICO, a deployment meant receiving random (usually out-of-sequence) hand-written letters that were usually old news because of a phone call you justmade in the last port.

When you arrived in port, you had to stand in long lines (due to everyone trying to callhome all at once) waiting for one of the payphones to be free so you could make a ten-minutecall (the amount of time the CMC had set). This was, of course, after you paid someoutrageous fee for a calling card or tried to figure out all the foreign country calling codesto make a collect call.

I remember waiting in line at Roosevelt Roads Naval station, Puerto Rico in particular, because there were swarms of mosquitoes that were so large they were biting me throughmy Levi’s, only to find that no one answered the phone at my house (this was before cellphones)! When you were gone during your 6-7-month deployment, you knew little of what was goingon in the rest of the world. Various trends would come and go back in the States; you wouldmiss all the new movies and music and you rarely saw an American fast-food restaurant.

Now, Fox News or CNN is playing on large screen televisions 24-hours a day even onmany of the smallest ships and bases. The latest movies and music are easily downloadedon USB drives, and American fast-food can be found somewhere in town in almost everyport.

Despite the great enhancements in technology and communication to help our servicemen and women feel closer to friends and family and keep up on what is going on back home,it is nothing compared to what God has set up for us to communicate with Him.Whether you are at home or in a distant country, night or day, calm seas or stormy weather, good or difficult times, know that God is always going to be “at home,” and be available tohear your prayers. He wants and expects us to communicate with Him and delights when wedo so.

Be sure to use those emails, texts and USB drives to grow closer to distant friends andfamily, but also be sure to use prayer to grow closer to God!

REUNION SURPRISE MEETING

Hard to believe but Michael and Jill Holmes and neigh-bors from San Diego were visiting the WWII museumand found out we were at the museum also. As theywere leaving one of the buildings and I (Ed Trotter) wasleaving another we ran into each other in the middle ofthe street between the buildings. They saw my TICOCVA-14 hat and they asked about the ship and reunion. We found out that Mike and I were on the ship at thesame time. He was a Supply Officer and in charge of theWardroom and I was a Line Officer in Engineering.LaterI changed and becamea Supply Officer, sothis was a meeting oftwo SupplyOfficers. We hopeMike will become amember of the Associ-ation and that we willsee them at the Albu-querque, NM reunionnext year.
