If you would, you could possibly play as well as this young man, if not better. But you’d have to put in the time, effort and discipline needed. This young man has practiced hours a day every day for years to pursue his dream. Would you be willing to give that kind of time and dedication?” As we approach Chanukah, our Festival of Light, we typically think of the miracle that occurred when the Maccabees entered the Temple in Jerusalem following their victory over the Syrian-Greek army and found enough oil to last for one day that ended up burning for eight. But the word Chanukah actually comes from the Hebrew root meaning dedication, reminding us of how the Maccabees cleaned, purified and rededicated the Temple after its desecration. The name of the holiday itself re-affirms the continuing challenge to each of us when it comes to how we choose to dedicate ourselves, through faith and action, to living out the highest ideals of our heritage and the ethical, moral and spiritual values we hold sacred. This year, as we light our candles, let us not just celebrate the dedication of the Maccabees, but re-dedicate ourselves to using our own gifts and skills, our time and talents to help bring about the miracles and dreams we wish for ourselves, our families, our synagogue community and the world. THE MIRACLE OF DEDICATIONA young man gave a rousing performance during a piano recital in front of a large audience. Afterwards, a listener approached the young virtuoso and said to him, “I would give anything to play as well as you do!”

His teacher, who had accompanied her prized pupil, overheard the listener’s remark and responded, “Oh no, you wouldn’t! If you would,

you could possibly play as well as this young man, if not better. But you’d have to put in the time, effort and discipline needed. This young man has practiced hours a day every day for years to pursue his dream. Would you be willing to give that kind of time and dedication?”

As we approach Chanukah, our Festival of Light, we typically think of the miracle that occurred when the Maccabees entered the Temple in Jerusalem following their victory over the Syrian-Greek army and found enough oil to last for one day that ended up burning for eight.

Chanukah reminds us of how strong our community can be when we are each dedicated to its continued well-being and growth.

The Maccabees didn’t know a miracle would occur when they first got started, but they realized that if they, themselves, weren’t dedicated enough to do what they could with the oil they had, then the dream they had for their community would never come to fruition.

This year, as we light our candles, let us not just celebrate the dedication of the Maccabees, but re-dedicate ourselves to using our own gifts and skills, our time and talents to help bring about the miracles and dreams we wish for ourselves, our families, our synagogue community and the world.

From our homes to yours, we wish you happiness, brightness and warmth during this Festival of Light.

PASSION IS THE BACKBONE OF A RELEVANT COMMUNITYWhether you are new to M’kor Shalom or have been a member for years, you probably noticed there is something that makes “Our House” special. Our congregation has a long tradition of innovation and program development that directly improves people’s lives. FROM YOUR LEADERSHIPJill Fox, Vice President

BECOME INSPIRED BY THE GIFT OF ACTIVE PARTICIPATION

When I look back eight years, I never thought I would be where I am today, proudly serving as one of M’kor Shalom’s vice presidents.

What brought me to this point and what made me want to get involved? I became a Bat Mitzvah in this synagogue many years ago and already knew that M’kor Shalom was a special place. When my husband and I were ready to join a

synagogue, there was no other place I wanted to be. One night I received a call from a committee chair, and she asked me if I would like to come to a meeting of the Membership Committee. Since I had no other plans for that night, I thought, “Why not?” I went to the meeting – and the next one and the one after that – and, well, I am still going to them.

I met people I would otherwise never have met. As I started building new friendships, I was asked to help out with events these people were involved with and then met more people. Eventually I joined other committees. That led to chairing and co-chairing committees, and then I was asked to be on the Board of Trustees.

Being involved and volunteering was just the right thing at the right time when my daughter was a bit older and my husband had other interests that kept him busy. While being with my family will always be the most important thing to me, becoming more deeply engaged with my M’kor Shalom family has been such a special blessing.

All it took was for me to answer a phone call. I hope you will answer that call one day to enrich your life and help strengthen our community.

All congregants are welcome to participate in synagogue activities. If you have any special needs, please let us know by calling the synagogue office and

leaving a message for the Caring Community Committee. We will make every attempt to arrange appropriate accommodations.

PASSION (continued from page one)

When a beloved member of our congregation passed away this spring, members on vacation, those who moved away in retirement and others were able to be with their community via the memorial service webcast. Read the webcast testimonials throughout this edition of The Source (see the sign).

These webcasts, as well as other services, demonstrate how M’kor Shalom looks after its own, but we also engage with the wider community in some pretty amazing ways. As many congregants know, M’kor Shalom houses up to 12 homeless men in our Social Hall for two weeks every winter, providing not only food and shelter, but also fellowship and support. As a coalition member of the Interfaith Homeless Outreach Council (IHOC), our synagogue has been involved in this effort since 1987. What many congregants might not know is that we are the only synagogue among the 30 or so coalition members – all the rest are churches. Many congregants also may not realize that the IHOC program actually runs from November until May, during which time the men attend life skills classes on money management, job seeking and developing interpersonal relationships while also working with nonprofit organizations such as Goodwill Industries. There are many success stories among the men. On the IHOC website, you can read about John B., who is working at the Philadelphia Sign Company in Palmyra, living in Merchantville and operating a growing landscape business. Kevin W. is working at the shipyard and living in IHOC’s Permanent Housing Program. Kevin T. is married and living in Lindenwold. James C. is a part-time driver for NJ Transit living in Woodlynne. The list goes on and on, and M’kor Shalom has been an integral part of helping change lives.

Another example of how our congregants take action is our involvement with the Ronald McDonald House in Camden. While many congregations cook meals, we are the only volunteer group that actually takes over the management of the Ronald McDonald House for a 48-hour period to allow the staff to spend Christmas at home and make the house a comforting, festive place for families who must spend the holiday far from their homes coping with a hospitalized child.

Each of these programs needs volunteers to sustain it. Please consider joining us to continue the legacy of M’kor Shalom as an active and innovative organization making a difference in the lives of so many. Watch for the rest of the story about what makes “Our House” so unique in future issues.

FOR THE FIRST TIME, on the second day of Rosh

Hashanah, I found myself in need of watching a service online. Thank you! I now understand the power and value of being able to be part of the service in this way. It was very meaningful and I am so appreciative of your efforts.

Save The Date for theseMajor Upcoming Events

MY HUSBAND AND PARENTS attended [Erev Yom Kippur] services tonight while I stayed home with my young

children. It felt strange not to attend. Then I recalled you had a webcast. I watched almost the entire service (had to put the kids to bed) and it was amazing! This is the first time I used the webcast, as we are new members. This may be life-changing. Thank you so much for making this available. I loved everything about the service.

—Jill G.

I WANT TO SHARE with you how happy I am that I was able to stream the [memorial service for Steve Burkett]

on my phone. Thank you so much for working so hard on the webcasting. I know it means a great deal to many people, and today was just another example of how incredible our incredible congregation is – as well as its members. We really are a family of families.

THE PRESCHOOL: CONNECTING FAMILIES The M’kor Shalom Preschool provides a warm, friendly community not only for our children but for their parents as well, thanks in large part to the work of the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). The PTO, traditionally the fundraising arm of the Preschool, has become actively involved in running family events and social outings for parents, whether it’s just a small group going out for a drink or a large group celebrating the end of a school year. As Preschool Director Sharon Halperin puts it, “The PTO encourages all the parents to get involved. Families with young children looking to connect with others can find that connection through the Preschool.” PTO co-chair Iris Snyder jokes that she walked into the M’kor Shalom Preschool almost nine years ago for a Fun with Ones class and never left. “My third-grader has a four-year-old sibling, so the minute I graduated from kindergarten, we were back in preschool,” she explains. Having worked for the Jewish Federation and volunteered in many of the Preschool’s activities, she was a good fit for the PTO co-chairmanship, a role she shares with fellow Preschool parent Sarah Zalcmann. According to Sarah, parents are getting involved with the Preschool in large part due to the quality of the school. “I started volunteering because I’m so grateful to have such a wonderful preschool for my two boys,” she explains. “In my opinion, the quality of education is second to none — with an engaging curriculum, nurturing and loving teachers and a wonderful community of children and parents. My children can’t wait to go to M’kor Shalom each morning!” A major PTO success is the revitalization of the Tot Programming Committee, co-chaired by Jenny Dorn and Stephanie Riviello. In addition to the book fair and Tot Shabbats, the PTO organized a dinner in the sukkah this year dubbed Pizza in the Hut, attended by over 50 Preschool families. The Moms Night Out group is thriving, thanks to its chair Jaime Weingart. The group provides a way to meet parents from other classes in a fun, relaxed environment. It’s also a way for working moms, who may not be able to volunteer at school during the day, to meet other parents. One of the PTO’s main goals, says Iris, is to deepen a sense of community with the larger congregation. As she explains, “We want to help parents make connections among themselves, and also make a connection between the school and synagogue so that once their kids leave the Preschool they will continue to feel at home at M’kor Shalom.” The strength of our community depends on embracing all members of our community from tots to seniors.

WHAT KEEPS TEENS IN OUR HOUSE

Leaders in both the Reform and Conservative movements estimate that fewer than 25% of teens whose parents are synagogue members now participate in traditional youth groups. It appears that many teens are attracted to shorter, more intensive experiences, such as summer camps and Israel trips. M’kor Shalom has a long tradition of keeping Judaism vital for our children. Proof of that is on average, 60% of our Confirmation Class students choose to continue with Post-Confirmation studies. We are an enthusiastic supporter of the local JCC camps and Camp Harlam, and we have one of the strongest commitments within our local community (in number of participants) to the Confirmation Year Israel Trip. The impact of this last program was validated by a recent survey conducted by Merle Steinberg, our Education Director. She asked students in 11th and 12th grades to write about the M’kor Moment that was most influential in their decision to continue in our Post-Confirmation Program. Some mentioned Confirmation rehearsals and the service, discussions held in Hebrew High, working in the Madrikhim Team and, of course, their Bar and Bat Mitzvah. However, the most consistent M’kor Moments were associated with the Confirmation Class Israel Trip. Here are some of their comments.

It was the cruise on the Red Sea. Eating and listening to music. We all felt so close to each other, and together we jumped into the Red Sea.

The Bedouin tents (best day ever!) and camel riding. I felt so close to everyone and it made me feel so connected to Israel.

I am so thankful for M’kor Shalom for giving me the opportunity to go on the trip of a lifetime. It truly was life changing.

Since I began going to M’kor Shalom for Mommy and Me classes, my favorite memory has been going to Israel.

At the Bedouin tent we sat in a circle very late at night playing a group game that bonded all of us together. The combination of the location and special people created an experience I will never forget.

My favorite thing about M’kor Shalom is getting to know the people in my grade on our Confirmation trip to Israel.

My M’kor Moment was when we went to Israel and went to Ben Yehuda Street. We found a beautiful café and ate the best food I’ve ever tasted.

This trip impacts the lives of our students in many ways, even ways that we learn about years after graduation. Our college students return to Israel with the Jewish National Fund, enroll in Tel Aviv and Hebrew Universities and travel with Birthright Israel.

GIFT OF ISRAEL PROGRAMA roadblock to participation for many families is the cost of the Israel trip, which can be more than $4000. That’s why M’kor Shalom supports the Gift of Israel (GOI). Sponsored by the Jewish Federation as well as area synagogues, the GOI provides a means for families to save for this trip over several years and receive matching funds. Families that begin contributing to this fund in the 3rd grade save over a thousand dollars and receive 100% of that in matching funds. For more information, contact the Gift of Israel Program at http://jewishsouthjersey.org/goi or [email protected].
