Volume 42 March 2014

Spring is in the air! Ocially spring begins with the vernal equinox on March 20th at 12:57 pm. However, one of the perks to living in Southern Utah is the won-derful weather.

People are out planting gardens, prepping lawns, and enjoying the beautiful weather. Did you know that the library has invested in gardening literature for each branch? If you are looking for information on garden-ing, check it out and paint those thumbs green.

As a library system, we support the freedom of infor-mation. In that role, we would like to remind everyone that March 16 is Freedom of Information Day. March 16 is the birthday of James Madison, who is widely regarded as the Father of the Constitution and as the foremost advocate for openness in government. The Freedom of Information Act was passed into law in 1966. We support the freedom of information, and invite all to come join us in participating in you infor-mation freedom.

It was a big night at the Oscars and so now you know which lms won the honor of being the best in their category for 2014. You haven’t seen them? Check your library for these award-winning titles and see what all the commotion is about. You will be glad you did.

In the meantime, here are some movies that have just arrived at your library:

You keep making the popcorn and your library will keep getting the movies you want to watch. Check it out….you will be amazed!

There are lot’s of fun events happening in March! Celebrate the birthday of Dr. Suess on March 2, St. Patrick’s day on March 17, and get ready for the In & Out Burger Reading Challenge, which starts on March 1st!

When nurturing your budding readers, make sure that you don’t criticize their book selections. Don’t worry if they are interested in comic books, tastes do mature and many distinguished people cut their teeth on “junk” books.

This month, the Library brings you the letter “H”! Find books by authors whose last name starts with the letter “H”. Easy book and Picture book readers can try books by these authors: Hass, Haley, Hall, Hargreaves, Harker, Harris, Hayward, Kerman, Hest, Hoban, Hobbie, Hood, Hooks, Howe, Hughes, Hurd and Hutchins.

Chapter book readers can try books by: Haddix, Hahn, Hannah, Hapka, Hardcastle, Hardings, Hart, Hays, Hazen, Heide, Henkes, Henry, Hesse, Hiaasen, Hill, Hobbs, Holmes, Howe, and Hunter.

I will bid you farewell with a fabu-lous joke to share with your family and friends! “Knock, knock.” “Who’s there?” “Isolate.” “Isolate who?” “Isolate to the party! I ‘m sorry I almost missed it.”

Congratulations to Kerrie Bowler of the Santa Clara Library for being January’s Washington County Library System’s Employee of the Month!

In January, the Santa Clara library held their 10 year anniversary/birthday celebration. Kerrie was instrumental in preparing for the success of that event. Starting in December and continuing up until the event on the 23rd, Kerrie began preparing displays and decorations. In addition to her normal clerk responsibilities, she would dedicate at least an hour each shift to create four separate displays in celebration of the event. The displays consisted of pictures of the library (before, during, and after construction), a detailed history of the Santa Clara branch, information on their mural and the inspiration behind it, a then and now display with items from both time periods.

Kerrie went above the call of duty to prepare for this event, and we would like to congratulate her for her eort!

‘The Hunt’ (2012) is the Foreign Film Club’s movie pick for this month. This drama from Denmark tells of a teacher who lives a lonely life while struggling over his son’s custody. His life slowly gets better as he nds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shat-tered by an innocent little lie. This is a riveting lm and not for the faint of heart.

Mads Mikkelsen, the main character of the lm, won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival for his poignant role as the teacher in 2012. The lm has been selected as the Danish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards, making the nal nomination. In the same category it was nominated at the Golden Globe Award 2013.

If you are interesting in joining the Foreign Film Club, feel free to come by the Santa Clara Library on the rst Monday of each month at 5:00 and enjoy the discussion and refreshments. Our next meeting is April 7th. See you there!
